With the sudden reveal of changelings to the world, we are now scrambling for a solution to counter their shape-shifting abilities. Even Princess Celestia's protege, Twilight Sparkle, as been unsuccessful in creating a counter spell to their magic. It seemed for a time that we would never be able to effectively counter their every increasing insertions...

That was before Princess Luna claimed she knew the answer.

Her proposal was, by her command she would task her special guards to hunt down and root out any changeling activity in Equestria. Luna's logic was it takes a spider, or in this case a bat to catch a bug. These strange ponies have been around for centuries, few in number and nearly always forced to the fringes of Pony Civilization. What these ponies(other than ther appearance) could have that normal ponies didn't was a complete mystery.

With approval by the council, Luna put forth a nation wide call for any and all "Bat Ponies" willing to serve their country and find a place amongst their peers. Many answered the call for what could likely be their first chance to be accepted and find a new life. You were one such pony that answered this call.

Welcome bat, to the Night Watch.
