The Race

Previous Chapter

I slammed my hooves in front of AJ, ready to beat her at her own games. You know, most days I would just be excited to beat Applejack, but I was more excited to see Squirt. It was her first Sisterhooves Social… Well, and mine too technically. I would sometimes come to watch, but AJ would get sappy with Applebloom more than I could stand.

“Y’all sure you can take us on, Dash?” She challenged, glancing at Applebloom. “Don’t mean to brag, but AB and I have been competein’ in race since she was old enough ta’ walk.

“Oh yeah!?” I countered, ready to win another race. “I’ve been winning races since I’ve been old enough to fly!” I wrapped my arm around Scootaloo, who had one of the widest smiles I’ve ever seen. “Scoots and I here can take you out no problem!”

“Yeah! No problem!” Squirt echoed.

“Ya sure ‘bout that?” Applebloom joined in on the challenges, squinting at Scoots. “I know we’re friends and all, Scoots, but my sis is totally gunna’ kick your sis’ flank.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah!”

I was almost worried these two fillies were about to fight before the race began. They were staring at eachother so closely that their muzzles almost touched. It kinda reminded me of-

Scootaloo stuck her tongue out and blew a raspberry and Applebloom just giggled back.

“Still think yer still tough without those wings?” Applejack pointed to the fancy rope work she fastened around my wings. Squirt tied a string around her own wings after she saw AJ tie up mine, and it was very sill- cu- it was the most adorable thing in Equestria!

“Wings or not, you’re goin’ down, AJ.”

“I’d like to see you try.” She smirked.

“All y’all fillies and colts! It’s time to be headin’ towards the finish- I mean the startin’ line! The big race is about to start!”  Granny Smith’s  voice shouted out of one of those megaphones that Spitfire uses to shout at us when doing routines.

It was only a short trot to the line, but I didn’t want AJ to get an early win on us. First to the start, first to the finish! I grabbed Scootaloo by the blue bandana we were both wearing and threw on my back before running to the starting gate.

“Hey, Scoots,” I asked, dropping her off next to me line. “Y’know, for the first time in my life, I may not want to win,” I poked her in the chest lightly. “Lets just have a blast, okay?” She nodded. “And win in the process!” I added after

“Of course, Dash! They don’t stand a chance with us. We’re the perfect team! The fastest flyer in Equestria, and the best scooter racer in Ponyville!” We hoof bumped before breaking out into a fit of giggles.

“Something funny there, Darlings?” I heard Rarity ask behind us as she and Sweetie Belle approached the starting line. “Because I’d laugh all you can… BEFORE WE DESTROY YOU!” She screamed, causing Scootaloo and I to jump a little. We definitely weren’t scared, though. I mean… Why would Rarity be scary? Other than her need to give me a mane styling. Who does she think I am?

“Ten!” Granny Smith announced as AJ and Applebloom trotted up to the starting gate. Slowpokes.

“Nine!” Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle and Applebloom left their positions for a second.

I’m pretty sure Granny yelled eight, but I couldn’t hear them over the fillies ear-piercing cry of “CUTIE MARK CRUSADER SISTERHOOVES SOCIAL RACERS YAY!”

“Seven!” They giggled as they got back to us, quickly adopting some awesome racing stances.

“Five!” AJ kicked the dirt. I stuck my tongue out at her, just to show her how serious I was about leaving her flank in the dust.

“Four!” My muscles tensed, I couldn’t hear Scootaloo breathing, so she must have been holding her breath.

“Three!”

“Uhhh, what number was I on? Oh coundfarn it, just go!”

The siren blared as we jetted out of the gates, side by side. I honestly wasn’t sure if we were going to win, but I knew one thing. Scootaloo can be one pretty awesome sister.

And you know what? I can be too.
