In Ponyville, everything seemed beautiful. Bees buzzed happily around the flowers at Roseluck's shop. The weather pegasi, with Rainbow Dash's guidance, had made what seemed like the most wondrous day ever; just enough shade, and just enough sun. Three excited fillies ran by in a blur, shouting something about 'Cutie Mark Crusading.' Mr. and Mrs. Cake had their hooves full, juggling work, the twins, and Pinkie Pie. Even Derpy seemed to have picked up on this amazing day, for, as she flew by on her mail routes, she did not run into a single object, and Spike was doing groceries.
Wait, what?
Yes, Twilight had sent Spike to get the groceries. She was too busy to do so herself, but had taken the time out of her day to make him a list and give him the required bits. However, she'd given him seven extra. It was as if she were telling Spike something, and if she was, he'd gotten the message.
Get me something for Mother's Day, Spike.
After he'd gotten the basics, which consisted of eggs, milk, and bread, Spike went over to Carousel Boutique. Surely the fantastic, stunning mare named Rarity would have something for the very special day. Most likely all of her customers had mothers, and it would be a waste to just not do anything.
"Rarity?" Spike called as he entered the shop. He hoped he wasn't interrupting anything.
The Element of Generosity smiled, "Spikey-Wikey, do come in! Make yourself comfortable, alright? Now, if you'll allow me to guess, you're here for Twilight?"
"H-how did you-?" started Spike, before Rarity hushed him.
"Nonsense, darling, don't act as if it weren't obvious!" she smiled, "You and Twilight? Why, I've never seen a closer surrogate relationship, and that's counting Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo. Of course you're getting her something for Mother's Day, and I have just the thing, if you want it."
Spike gasped, "You do?! Can I see it!?"
"Certainly, Spikey," Rarity said, "Now, let me fetch it. I'm certain I left it in the back."
With that, Rarity trotted out of the room. She returned with a proud smile on her face. Enveloped in her blue magic was a beautiful necklace. It was a golden chain, and on the end was an amazing, shimmering, pink gem. It looked just like Twilight's magic would when she'd practice back in school. It was simply perfect.
"Oh my Celestia, Rarity!" exclaimed Spike, "Where did you get this?!"
Rarity absolutely beamed, "Oh, you know. I ordered it specifically for a dress I was making last month, but I had to scrap the entire idea. The whole thing went out of style rather quickly."
Spike took the necklace form her grasp, and looked at his bits. "How much do I owe you?" he asked.
"Don't you worry about a thing, Spikey," Rarity cooed. "Think of it as a generous act why don't you?"
"B-but I wouldn't feel right just taking it for free, and it looks like it cost alot-"
Rarity sighed, "Spike, I refuse to take your bits. I wasn't using it anyway, and if I need one, I can always buy another."
"Thank you so much, Rarity!" Spike hugged the white-coated unicorn. "My shopping's a bit late, with it being the day before Mother's Day, it means so much to me that you'd do this! Now I can get a card and flow... ers." Suddenly, his eyes darted to teh clock hanging on the wall. 5:55. Oh no! All the flower-stands were closed by 6:00! If he didn't hurry, there;d be no way to get Twilight flowers until tomorrow, and by then it would be too late!
"I'm sorry, Rarity! I gotta go!" Spike yelled as he bolted form the Carousel Boutique. Alright, he could get the card after the flowers, those stores were always open later. Right now, if he ran, he would make it to Roseluck's shop on time.
And so, he ran.

Spike had ended up getting the perfect gifts for Twilight. He had the necklace Rarity had given him, purple and pink flowers, and a card that said, Mom, you have no idea how much you mean to me. On the inside, it read, But you may have an idea. A little humor was something valuable to teach the young one, even if they couldn't quite hear it yet.
Yes, Twilight was pregnant. Five weeks through, and doing great. It didn't show yet, but she still gave off that vibe. The whole time, Twi had been smiling. She wanted oh so badly to meet this young foal of hers, and was already growing impatient. Still, to think, in eleven months, Spike was to have a younger sibling. It was one of his greatest fantasies, imagining himself playing with the to-be-born colt or filly. They would, for sure, have one of the awesomest big brothers in the world.
When Spike came home, he was surprised to find it was dark. He quietly closed the door behind him, not wanting to disturb Twilight if she'd fallen asleep. Earlier that day, Spike had found the perfect place to hide his presents. Right under the statue of a unicorn, in the center of teh main room, there was a secret compartment that not even Twi knew about. It was small, but it would do. After everything was in place, he heard the sobs.
They were quiet, coming from the bedroom. There was no doubt they were Twilight's, with how pitched they were. It definitely wasn't Owlicious's, owls can't cry. So, Spike did the only reasonable thing he could do. He went upstairs.
In the middle of the bedroom was Princess Twilight Sparkle herself. Her mane was a mess, unkempt and unruly. Tears stained her coat, which was snarled into knots. When Spike walked up to her, she immediately pulled him into a hug. He didn't understand what was happening, but just hugged back anyway.
On the ground, there was a paper. In the dark, Spike could barely make out any words, but one stood out among the rest, anyway.
Miscarriage.
