Chapters Octavia couldn’t deny it, Sugarcube Corner smelled wonderful. The only thing better than the aroma in the air was the chocolate oat milkshake in her glass. Her straw gurgled as it hit an air pocket between chunks of ice cream. She pushed the straw around and absentmindedly batted at the diamond ring tied into her mane.
Her straw resumed its silent duty just in time for her to hear the ding of gold striking the table top. She looked up and saw her ring bounce over the table’s edge and out of sight.
She dove out of her chair and scanned the ground. “Oh no. No no no n–”
Her frantic crawl across the floor ended in a pair of light blue hooves, one of which was holding out the runaway ring. She looked up and saw the baker’s smiling face framed between two bulbous pink earrings and a candy red mane that looked a little too much like frosting.
“Loose something, dearie?”
Octavia stood and tried to hide her reddening cheeks. “I… yes, thank you.”
“No problem at all. I’m Mrs. Cake, could I get you another milkshake? Chocolate and oat, right?”
“I’m Octavia. I still have plenty of…” She glanced at her table and saw ice cream oozing out of the toppled glass and onto the floor. “Ugh, I’m so sorry. I’ll clean it up right away.”
“Oh come now, it’s just a little ice cream. Why if I counted the gallons of the stuff the foals spill…”
Before Octavia could object Mrs. Cake was wiping up the mess with a cloth. “Why don’t you just sit for a minute. I was just about to bring you a refill anyway, on the house.”
“That’s very generous of you.”
Mrs. Cake retrieved another milkshake from the back counter and joined her at the table. “Don’t worry about it dearie, I can remember being in your position all too well. I was so excited and nervous I could barely walk in a straight line.”
“My position?”
Mrs. Cake glanced down at the ring sitting on the table.
Octavia blushed again. “Most of the time I don’t even wear it, I still can’t get the mane knot right. If only that diamond wasn’t so big and heavy.”
“I think you’re the first bride I’ve ever heard ask for a smaller one. Let me show you a little baker’s trick.”
She reached into her apron and pulled out a silver chain with a humble wedding band threaded through it. The ring was graced with three small diamonds and engraved with two capital C’s.
“In a bakery you can’t count on any sort of mane knot, if one of these stones fell into a bowl full of cake batter… well let’s just say that I’d be getting the dentist bill for whoever was unlucky enough to find it.”
“That’s brilliant! Is there a jewelry store around here? I’ll pick up a chain like that on my way to the train station.”
“Just down the street, near the fountain. I take it you’re just visiting Ponyville, then?”
“Yes, I’ve been visiting my cousin Lyra.”
“Ah Lyra, she’s in here all the time. She must be so excited for you.”
Octavia rested her head on a hoof. “A little too excited. It feels more like she’s the one getting married.”
“I remember that feeling, for me it was my mother… and my aunt… and my sister come to think of it. They finally backed off when I threatened to elope and not tell any of them.”
“Oh if only… His family’s in Canterlot like we are, my parents are in Manehatten, and they all expect something big and elaborate. They don’t seem to understand how little musicians like us make. We’ve been engaged for over two years now but still… we’re not even close to having the bits for what they have in mind.”
Mrs. Cake studied her own hooves for a moment. “Now, don’t take this the wrong way, dearie. I don’t mean to turn into another back seat wedding planner, but would you ever consider having the wedding here in Ponyville instead?”
“Why would I when most of the ponies we’d be inviting live in Canterlot?”
“Canterlot’s just a quick train ride away, same goes for Manehatten. My husband and I do a fair bit of catering and we could give you a excellent deal on the food. We also rent our loft to an amazing party planner.”
She leaned in a whispered behind a hoof. “To tell the truth she cares more about throwing a good party more than getting paid for putting it together.”
Octavia looked down at her ring and then back at Mrs. Cake. “Well I guess I already know the food would be great. Tell me more about this party planner.”
“She’s one of the best. She knows everypony in town; you’d have your pick of indoor or outdoor venues, and she could introduce you to the dressmaker who did Princess Cadence’s wedding dress. Whatever your budget is, I’m sure we could all accommodate you.”
“I… wow. That does sound amazing. You said your party planner lives upstairs?”
Mrs. Cake gestured to a staircase and the far side of the room. “Oh yes. There she is right n–”
Pinkie Pie descended the staircase right on cue. “Hi there Mrs. Cake, who’s your friend?”
Octavia’s replacement milkshake joined the first one on the floor. She’d nearly forgotten that bright pink coat and poofy mane. “You! It’s you!”
Pinkie never stopped smiling. “It’s me all right! My name’s Pinkie, what’s yours?”
Octavia had her backed into a corner a moment later. “You were the one at the Grand Galloping Gala! You ruined the whole party; you ruined my performance, you ruined my chance at the big time!”
Pinkie’s smile finally faltered. “That doesn’t sound like m–”
“It was you, you took over the stage, you made us play that stupid song that nearly wrecked my career.”
“Song?”
Octavia could barely stomach saying the words. “The Pony Pokey.”
Pinkie’s eyes lit up. “Oh, I love that one! You put your right hoof in, you stick your left–”
A hoof covered her mouth. “Please, no. I can’t take it. Just… stay away. I guess I’m not getting married in Poneyville after all.”
Pinkie studied the grey mare walking towards the door and the teardrops dotting the floor in her wake. Her raspberry colored mane deflated like a balloon. “Did I really ruin the gala for you?”
Octavia glanced back from the doorway. “Worst gala ever.”
Pinkie’s heartbreak was almost audible. Whole seconds passed in silence before the other customers managed to stop staring and return to their own conversations.
The train screeched to a slow halt at Ponyville station. Octavia glanced at the clock above the ticket booth. Just a few more minutes and she’d never have to set hoof in this town again.
“Wait! Wait!”
The shrill voice made her shiver. “No, please not…”
Pinkie tackled her to the ground. “You can’t go without this!”
Octavia’s engagement ring dropped onto her nose.
They stared at each other for a moment. Octavia’s eyes still wet and Pinkie’s smile painfully thin.
“All aboard for Canterlot!” The conductor shouted.
Octavia stood, pulled her saddlebag over, and dropped the ring into a pocket. “Thanks, I can’t believe I forgot it. Sorry I blew up and you back there, I’d better go.”
“I talked to Mrs. Cake. Did you really want to get married in Ponyville? Were you really going to ask me to plan the whole thing?”
“It’s the only way we’ll ever afford it, but I don’t think you’d want to throw that kind of party anyway.”
“But I love parties! It doesn’t have to be all silly, I can make it super-duper serious if you want.”
“I don’t think so.”
Pinkie dove to the ground and hugged her front hooves. “Please let me make the gala up to you! Come back to Ponyville on the afternoon train tomorrow and I’ll show you how serious a party-planning pony I can be. Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye.”
“All aboard! All aboard for Canterlot!” The conductor seemed to be shouting directly at them this time.
Octavia stared down at the mess of a pony holding her in place. “The afternoon train?”
“Yeah.”
“A serious party-planning pony?”
Pinkie jumped up and saluted her. “Pinkie Super-Serious Pie, reporting for duty!”
Octavia slipped on her saddle bag and walked towards the train. “I’ll consider it.”
The train chugged along its track, whisking scenery past Octavia’s window. She watched the trees rush by and, on occasion, caught a glimpse of their final destination. They’d be in Ponyville soon.
“This still feels like a mistake.”
Concerto was seated next to her on the bench. “It’ll be okay Tavi. We’ll see what she has to offer, and if it’s not for us then we can just say no.”
“But then what? We’ll just be back where we started: I’ll still be rooming with Vinyl, you’ll still be in that hole-in-the-wall apartment across town, and we’ll be even further away from getting married.”
“We’ll make it happen, I promise. We just need a few more gigs and few less surprise expenses. Maybe we’ll get the Canterlot Garden Party again this year.”
She leaned against him and smiled. “I still can’t believe we scored that one, especially right after the Gala.”
“I told you that night wouldn’t trash your whole career.”
“I know. It still feels that way when I see one of those big shots like Fredrick Horseshoepin look at me.”
She held up her hooves to frame an invisible scene. “In my head they’re still seeing me up on the that stage in the palace ballroom, getting pushed over by what’s-her-name… Pinkie.”
“I think you need to give her a chance, she’s offering to plan our wedding, after all.”
“So long as it isn’t like the Gala.”
“It’s not like she deliberately tried to ruin you. She just sounds… different. Like your roommate.”
Octavia laughed. “You’re right. I still can’t believe Vinyl and I are friends at all. Are you still okay with her playing the reception? I know how uptight your parents are about modern music.”
“They got to choose the music at their wedding, now it’s our turn.”
“That’s the stallion I’m marrying, and not in twenty years when we can afford some fancy banquet hall. If this Ponyville thing falls through let’s just do it our way; a small no-frills ceremony and an extra long honeymoon.”
“Deal.”
The conductor walked through the cabin as the train began to decelerate. “Next stop Ponyville! Have your bags ready if this is your stop.”
Octavia moved to get up but Concerto held her back. “Just remember, Pinkie or no Pinkie, the Gala wasn’t your worst night ever.”
She kissed him and held up her gold necklace. The diamond ring threaded through it caught the sunlight and threw rainbows through the cabin. “A three-in-the-morning proposal that I’ll never forget.”
Pinkie bounced along the road while her entourage trotted behind. She was dressed in a tuxedo, which seemed to detract from her seriousness more than exemplify it. “Let’s see, we’ve been to Sweet Apple Acres, town hall, the spa, the schoolhouse, the–”
Octavia managed to speak between labored breaths. “–we don’t need to see every single building, Pinkie. We’re definitely not having the wedding in the schoolhouse, or the hospital, or in a clubhouse in the woods for that matter.”
“Oh I know that, I just wanted to show you how special Ponyville is so you’ll know how perfect it is for your special day. It’s the bestest place ever, right?”
Octavia put a hoof over her eyes and sighed. Concerto quickly spoke up. “So we’ve seen all the big places where we could hold the reception, what about that dressmaker friend of yours? Can we meet her?”
Pinkie skidded to a stop and drew in a gasp. “I almost forgot, it’s time to see the library!”
“The library?”
“Yep, it’s right over here!”
They turned a corner and came face to face with a massive oak tree that, strangely enough, had a great many windows. Trimmed branches formed the awning over a red front door adorned with a painting of a lit candle.
“Why would we hold the reception in a…”
Octavia touched his shoulder and shook her head. Her look said it all: just wait for Pinkie to get distracted, then run.
Pinkie opened the library’s door and gestured toward the lit interior. “Future brides and grooms first!”
It happened as soon as Octavia and Concerto crossed the threshold. Noisemakers blew, balloons and confetti showered them, and seven different voices shouted the same word: Surprise!
Concerto caught Octavia as she stumbled backward. They were suddenly in the midst of a party full of smiling ponies. Pinkie jumped into the fray and threw a fresh burst of decorations at them.
“It’s time for one of Pinkie’s patented Welcome to Ponyville and please-forgive-me-and-let-me-plan-your-wedding surprise party! Octavia, Concerto, these are my very best friends. They’ll make sure you have the best wedding ever.”
She dashed around the room, introducing each friend in turn. First she hugged a yellow pegasus with a soft pink mane.
“Octavia, this is Fluttershy she’ll be your personal assistant the whole day of the wedding. No matter what you need, she’s your pony. Right?”
Fluttershy started to whisper a yes, but Pinkie had already moved on.
Pinkie ran over to a small purple and green dragon next. “Concerto, this is Spike. He’ll be your personal assistant for the whole day.”
Spike bowed. “You can count on me! Anything you ne–”
Once again Pinkie was on the move. She came to a stop next to an orange earth pony with a yellow mane partly hidden by a wide-brimmed hat. “This is Applejack, she lives at Sweet Apple Acres and can get you the best cider in all of Equestria.”
Applejack tipped her hat to them. “Howdy y’all, it’s a real pleasure to–”
A light blue pegasus with a rainbow mane came next. Pinkie had to jump two feet into the air just to bring her to the ground for a hug. “And Rainbow Dash here is on the Ponyville weather team. She’ll make sure there isn’t a single cloud during your big day.”
Rainbow Dash folded her front hooves confidently and nodded. “You forgot the part about how awesome I am! Those clouds don’t stand a–”
A white unicorn beat Pinkie to the next hug, although this embrace looked more like a headlock. “Pinkie, darling, calm down and let them them breath.”
Octavia hadn’t even realized she wasn’t breathing. After a few deep breaths she nodded in thanks. “I’m… not so good with surprises, sorry.”
“Oh it’s us who should be sorry darling. Pinkie may be a bit high strung for your refined Canterlot tastes but I assure you she’s the best party pony to be had. I am Rarity, and it would be my pleasure to craft a gown worthy of your wedding day.”
Concerto smiled. “I just hope we can afford it, we’ve heard you’ve created dresses for royalty.”
“Oh I’m sure we’ll come to an arrangement, when Pinkie described your situation I simply knew I needed to accommodate you.”
The last pony spoke up from the back. “We all did, that’s why we’re here.”
At first Concerto and Octavia only saw a violet horn and a deep blue mane streaked with pink and purple. When she stepped through the crowd they both bowed as low as the ground would let them.
“Princess Twilight Sparkle!” They said in unison.
Twilight stared for a moment. “Please, you don’t need to call me that. I’m Pinkie’s friend just like everypony else here, and we all want to help make sure you have a wonderful wedding.”
Pinkie bumped Twilight aside. “That’s right, Princess Twilight’s here to help! She’s super organized, so you know everything will be great. So what do you think? Can I throw your wedding party? Please?”
Octavia and Concerto looked at each other. There was something different about Pinkie’s voice, a tinge of barely contained desperation that struggling musicians knew all too well. They could feel how badly she wanted this, it was just a question of if they did too.
He whispered in her ear, and she reciprocated. They went back and forth a few times, nodding occasionally at first and then after every secret exchange. Finally she stood and faced Pinkie.
“I think we’re going to accept your offer, Pinkie. It’d be wonderful to have such a great group of ponies helping us out, it’s more than we’d ever hoped to afford. We have one other request, if it’s not too much to ask.”
Pinkie vibrated briefly, as if she was going to explode. Instead she checked herself, took a deep breath, and spoke in a calm voice. “You won’t regret it, Pinkie promise. What’s your request?”
Octavia turned back to Twilight and made another quick bow. “Princess Twilight, would you do us the honor of officiating at our wedding?”
Twilight’s eyes went wide. “You… you want me to marry you?”
Concerto stood by Octavia. “We’d be delighted if you would, it’s something a working class couple like us only dreams about.”
“I guess I could. Sure. I’ll just look up some traditional wedding vows, get some pointers from Princess Celestia…”
Pinkie shot off the ground and did a backflip. “Woohoo, princess wedding ceremony!”
“Pinkie!” Rarity shouted.
Pinkie slowed down in mid air and gently floated back to the ground. “I mean, thanks Twilight.”
She turned to her new clients, grinning ear to ear. “So, what kind of wedding did you have in mind?”
Octavia twirled the straw in her milkshake while Concerto finished his lunch. She’d never seen him enjoy a meal so much. Watching him bury his nose in daisy and cucumber sandwich was endearing in a way that nopony other than her could possibly understand.
Sugarcube Corner’s special hunger-inducing aroma was even stronger in the kitchen. The sounds of happy customers in the front of the shop was little more than background noise. Sitting in the midst of the pots, countertops, and ovens that birthed their lunch was a special feeling, almost like sitting in an empty orchestra pit after a big performance.
In restaurant parlance they were seated at the chef’s table; the special spot set side, more often than not in the kitchen, for the most important of guests. In Sugarcube Corner’s case, applying that title was a bit of a stretch. Two highchairs were folded up in a nearby alcove, and two of the wooden chairs were monogramed with double C’s. This hallowed table wasn’t for patrons, it was for family.
Finally Concerto came up for air. “This food’s amazing.”
“You said that three times already.”
“I’m so glad they’re catering our wedding.”
She smiled. “You’re not going to fit in your suit if we keep coming here for lunch.”
His eyes darted around as he chewed. Clearly he was looking for a comeback that wouldn’t result in a milkshake to the face.
Mr. Cake walked into the kitchen from the dining area with a tray of dirty plates balanced on his head. He was the physical opposite of his wife; tall and skinny instead of short and plump. He set the tray down by the sink and smiled at them.
“How’s the happy couple doing?”
Concerto swallowed just in time to reply. “Wonderful, Mr. Cake. I don’t think our wedding feast could be in better hooves.”
“That’s what we love to hear. As soon as you’re done with your lunch we can take a look at the cake.”
Mrs. Cake stuck her head through a nearby doorway. “Speaking of the cake, dear, could you come help me with the top layer?”
“Be right there honeybun.”
After Mr. Cake dashed off to assist his wife, Octavia quietly slid her chair away from the table. She tiptoed up to the open door and peeked around the corner.
Concerto looked up from the cupcake he was about to consume. “Aren’t you going to finish your milkshake? You’ve been raving about them ever since you found this place.”
“Ssh, just a minute.”
He scarfed down the cupcake and joined her silent watch. “I can’t see the cake from here.”
“Me either.”
“Than what’re you…”
He trailed off as he realized what was actually on display. Their wedding cake was hidden behind a large mixer, but the rest of the room, occupants included, was fully visible. The room was lined with countertops and every single one of them was covered in something wedding-related. Recipe books opened to pictures of cakes, pastry bags filled with frosting, and trays of cupcakes and hors d'oeuvres were all there. The real sight to see was the bakers themselves.
Mr. and Mrs. Cake were working side by side on the unseen wedding cake. Between the background noise of customers in the dining area and array of wedding preparations in this back room, it couldn’t have been clearer that they were busy ponies. A successful baker wasn’t that different from an in-demand musician; both were high energy careers that didn’t leave much free time. Despite all of that, every few minutes they’d look up from whatever they were working on just to smile at each other.
Octavia sighed quietly. “Do you think that’ll be us in a few years?”
“I don’t think I could even make that sandwich myself, let alone run a bake–”
She elbowed him in the side. “You know what I mean. Just look at them, they couldn’t possibly be more in love.”
“I think we’re already there, Tavi.”
She looked back at him and smiled. “It sure feels that way. What about when the honeymoon’s over and we both have to go back to work? Are we going to find time just for us?”
“Always. We’ve managed all these years dating, haven’t we? After the wedding we’ll see even more of each other, especially once we find a new apartment to share.”
She grinned and pumped a hoof toward the ceiling. “No more tripping over Vinyl Scratch’s records on the way to bed, no more fighting with three other mares for the shower, no more… You don’t snore, do you?”
“You’ll have to let me know.”
“If you wake up one morning with a pillow covering your face, then yes you do.”
“I’ll take the risk. The big thing is that if we can’t find the time for each other, we’ll make it. I’ll turn down extra gigs if it gets the way of our happiness. I’d give up playing entirely if we had another way to bring in the bits. ”
She hugged him, partly so she he wouldn’t see the tear forming in the corner of her eye. “I love you, Con. Forget the wedding, I can’t wait to start our new life together.”
“I love you too, Tavi. Just two more days!”
“Rainbow Dash. Hey Rainbow Dash!”
Pinkie was jumping up and down, shouting her friend’s name at the apex of every jump. The rainbow blur in the sky came to a stop overhead. “Hey Pinkie, make it quick, I’m really busy.”
“I know, I just wanted to make sure we’re all set for the big big wedding in two days.”
“Yeah, about that… It’s going to be a little hard to keep the skies clear.”
Pinkie came to a full stop. Rainbow had never seen her stand so still. “There can’t be any rain, Dashie. No rain, no mud, no clouds.”
“I know, I know. Our storm cloud shipment came in a week early by mistake.”
“No clouds, no rain!”
“I heard you the first time. We’ve got ‘em corralled over by water reservoir. It’ll take the whole weather team working shifts, but we’ll keep the rain away, even if I have to bust flank through the whole wedding.”
Pinkie let out a relieved sigh. “Whew, good. Can’t let a cloudy sky ruin the party.”
“Oh come on, one little cloud’s not going to–”
“Of course not, because there won’t be any. Right Dashie?”
Rainbow Dash slowly backed away from Pinkie’s penetrating stare. Somehow her wide grin only made it worse. “Right… so why are you standing on top of Applejack’s barn?”
The two of them looked down at the metal roof under Pinkie’s feet. From here the entire apple orchard was visible, a sea of green interrupted only by tiny spots of red.
Pinkie slid down the roof and hopped onto a hay bale. “Can’t talk now, I’ve got lots of friends to check up on!”
The next pony on her list, Applejack, was raking leaves nearby.
“Hey there Applejack, all set to host the biggest, most awesome wedding Ponyville’s ever seen?”
Applejack set her rake against the nearest tree. “Howdy Pinkie. I’m just about as ready as I’m gonna get; nothin’ left to do but rake leaves and set up the stage and chairs.”
“Great!”
“Would’ve been a whole lot better if I was settin’ up tables too. Ya know, for the food.”
“You don’t need to do that, silly, the Cakes are catering the whole thing.”
“That’s what I’m getting at. The wedding’s right here on Sweet Apple Acres, so why make the Cakes truck the food all the way out here when I could’ve whipped up everything right on the farm?”
She wiped a line of sweat off her brow and walked toward the house. “I guess it don’t matter much, I need to be the bigger pony and stop looking a gift apple in the mouth.”
Pinkie ran after her. “Applejack, Applejack, it’s a party. Parties just aren’t parties without tons of food. If you really wanted to make it extra special with a few home cooked goodies I’m sure Octavia wouldn’t mind.”
Applejack looked back and raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? What about the Cakes?”
“It’s not their party Applejack, it’s Octavia’s, and it’s going to be perfect!”
Applejack winced at that last word. “Don’t you think you’re taking this a little too seriously?”
“Too seriously? This is her wedding, Applejack. I can’t let her down, not after what happened at the Gala.”
“The Gala?”
Pinkie looked away and bit her lip. “Can’t talk, gotta run!”
Pinkie’s next stop was the library.
“Twilight? Spike? Anypony home?”
She stuck her head in door. The library was unusually dark, given that it was just past noon. Pinkie stepped inside and realized she was on the verge of being buried alive. Books were stacked up to the ceiling. Long shadows from the massive towers of bound paper left the majority of the library in the dark.
“Twilight!”
There was a snort, followed by a bump and the noisy collapse of one of the smaller towers. “Huh? Who’s that? Is it time for the wedding yet? Five more minutes!”
Pinkie, now wearing a hardhat equipped with a headlamp, found her friend sprawled on a small mountain of crumpled up parchment.
“Uh, Twilight? How’re the wedding vows coming?”
Twilight grinned an eerie grin, the kind that everypony knew meant magic and trouble lay ahead. Her eyes were bloodshot and her mane was in disarray. “Wedding vows? Which version? Pre-classical? Post-neo-romantic?”
“Didn’t you say you were getting a book from the Canterlot library on–”
“I did, can’t you tell? Guess how many ‘traditional wedding vows’ there are?” Twilight swept a hoof in a wide arc. “Thousands! Tens of thousands! I’ve been studying for weeks and I’m only halfway through. That first book I requested from the Canterlot library was part of a thirty two book set, which was just a digest version of a two hundred book set, which had an index for…”
Then she was snoring on her feet.
Pinkie scaled one of the book towers lining the wall. With one flick of her tail books, and sunlight, showered the sleeping alicorn below.
Twilight jolted awake with a yelp. “Ah! It’s time isn’t it, I’m not late am I? I can’t be late, can’t be tardy.”
Pinkie returned to her side. “You’re not late, silly, the weddings not for another two days.”
“Oh, oh good. Plenty of time to study… pick something appropriate… romantic.”
Pinkie shook her before she could nod off again. “Twilight, this is important, this is Octavia’s wedding we’re talking about. Princess up and pick some vows. Write new ones if you want.”
Twilight nodded. “I said I’d marry them, so I’ll find something. I knew I’d have new responsibilities as a princess, but marrying two ponies? Uniting them for the rest of their lives? What if I do it wrong? What if I ruin their–”
“Not gonna happen. It’s too big, too important.”
Twilight curled up in ball on the floor and covered her face with her tail. “Why was this such a big deal to you anyway? Somepony from Canterlot says she’s engaged and suddenly helping her is all you talk about.”
Pinkie looked at the floor. “Remember when we all went to the Grand Galloping Gala? Octavia was playing music there and I… I ruined the party for her, almost ruined her career too. That’s why I have to make it up to her, I have to make sure she has the best wedding ever. Lucky for me I’ve got all my best friends helping me out. I don’t know what I’d do if this fell apart.”
Soft snoring was the only reply. Pinkie gently lifted the edge of Twilight’s tail and patted her head. “Sweet dreams little princess. We’ve got a big day coming up, a perfect day.”
Octavia ran a hoof over the smooth white fabric of her dress. She turned in a slow circle in front of the full length mirrors, admiring every stitch and seam. She could finally believe it; the whole idea of ‘getting married’ wasn’t just some nebulous plan for a far away date. It was real, and it was going to happen in just a few hours.
“This really is an exquisite dress, Rarity, it’s like something out a fairy tale.”
Rarity looked up from her sewing table, where she was adjusting the veil. “Oh, thank you darling, I wouldn’t want you to think any less of your wedding ensemble. I’ll admit I had to restrain my creative vision slightly to stay on budget, but of course a wedding gown is only worn once; it doesn’t need to be the sturdiest of things.”
Fluttershy looked over Rarity’s other creations, from the veil to the train to the best mare’s dress, and sighed happily. “It’s going to be a beautiful wedding.”
Octavia nodded. “I just hope it’s what everypony wants.”
“All that matters is what you want, Octavia.”
“If only it was that simple.”
The veil floated through the air in an aura of blue light and set itself on her head. Rarity trotted over and held up a mirror for her.
“Of course it’s that simple, darling. You and Concerto are getting married, all your friends and family will be there, including all your new friends from Ponyville.”
“I know. This is going to sound weird, but it’s almost more than I wanted.”
“However do you mean?”
“It’s hard to explain… I play the cello in the Canterlot Orchestra. It’s a wonderful feeling, being part of that beautiful music. When the performance is over it’s just as wonderful to put the cello away and just have quiet time with my special somepony or my friends. Sometimes we play music of our own, but that’s just for us. Between the dress, and the food, and the ceremony with Princess Twilight… it’s starting to feel less like special romantic moment and more like another performance for the audience.”
Rarity circled her to inspect her work. “I do see what you mean, but can’t you relish that moment in the spotlight? This isn’t just an orchestra performance. You’re the bride, the mare everyone came to see; Concerto included. There’s precious few moments when everypony you know gathers together just to wish you the very best.”
“I guess I can’t argue with that.”
Fluttershy hovered in the air to stay out of Rarity’s way. “Oh, where’s the honeymoon? If you don’t mind my asking, that is.”
“I’m letting Concerto plan it, but it’s going to have to wait. There’s a big party at Canterlot Castle tomorrow morning and the two of us are part of the musical ensemble. We’re hopping on the early morning train and going directly there. Our instruments are sitting in Applejack’s barn right now so we can make a speedy exit after the reception.”
“Oh, it’s too bad you have to rush back to work after such a magical day.”
“This gig is paying for the honeymoon, it’ll definitely be magic.” Octavia winked and Fluttershy blushed.
The boutique’s front door flew open and Spike ran inside. “Rarity… Octavia…”
He put his hands on his knees and panted. Rarity trotted into the kitchen and returned with a glass of water floating next to her. “Spike, dear, whatever is the matter? You didn’t bring Concerto along did you? It’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the ceremony.”
Spike accepted the glass and eventually caught his breath. “Sorry, I ran the whole way. Concerto’s still across town with the Cakes. Octavia, a Pegasus Express letter just came for you. The envelope says extremely urgent.”
He held up a small white envelope covered with the aforementioned warning in bright red.
Octavia took the envelope and tore it open. “What could possibly be so important? This’d better not be about that next orchestra performance …”
She read the message, and then read it again.The letter trembled on her hoof and slipped off. She sat down on the floor and stared into space.
Rarity nudged her. “Breath dear, breath.”
She gasped and nodded. “Right, breath.”
Fluttershy retrieved the fallen letter and set it down in front of her. “What’s wrong, Octavia? What did the letter say?”
She glanced over at Rarity’s other major creation, the best mare’s dress. “Symphony’s not going to make it.”
Fluttershy gasped. “Your best mare? What happened?”
“She fell off the stage after a concert last night… broke her leg. She’ll be off her hooves for months.”
Octavia stared at the ground and let Rarity do the panicking for her.
“We have less than two hours, where can we find somepony new? What if the dress doesn’t go with her complexion? What if…”
Fluttershy looked just as worried, although her brand of panic was an even mix of Octavia’s despondent breath-holding and Rarity’s rapid fire questions. She cowered on the ground, chewed her front hooves and looked around for a good spot to hide. Instead of a hiding place she laid eyes on the now homeless dress had a strange idea.
“Um, what if… Octavia?”
Octavia took another gasping breath. “I’m going to faint if I keep doing that.”
“What if… oh never mind.”
“What is it, Fluttershy? Please just say something so I can focus.”
Fluttershy bit her lip and looked away. “What if… oh…”
Rarity grasped her by the shoulders. “Spit it out Fluttershy, we need ideas and we need them now.”
Fluttershy squeezed her eyes shut and spoke in one hurried breath. “What if you undid the machine stitch on both sides, used a top stitch to make wing holes, and I took Symphony’s place?”
She fell to the ground when Rarity’s hooves released her. A glance up showed two open-mouthed mares and one dragon staring down at her.
Octavia spoke first. “You’d… you’d do that for me, Fluttershy? We’ve only met a few times and I know you’re… well… shy.”
“I… I know how important this is to you Octavia. It’s important to all of us too, especially Pinkie. She hasn’t stopped talking about how everything has to be perfect since we met you.”
Octavia helped her up. “You six ponies really are the best of friends. I promise I’ll never forget–”
Rarity’s tape measure wound itself around Fluttershy’s middle. “Come come, no time to talk, we’ve got a dress to alter!”
Sweet Apple Acres was usually only this crowded during family reunions. Ponies from all over Equestria were milling around the reception area, a clear patch of land between the orchard and the barn. Pinkie’s special party touch could be seen everywhere, and nopony could deny that she’d turned a quaint farm setting into something extravagant.
Garlands, streamers, and balloons were strung in a continuous line from tree to tree. Huge white banners stretched from orchard to barn behind the stage, simultaneously providing shade for the seated guests on either side of the center aisle and bathing the aisle itself in an etherial glow. Every decoration showcased with Octavia and Concerto’s cutie marks; violet treble clefs and golden beamed eighth notes were everywhere. The banners blocking the sun projected the musical notes onto every surface.
Pinkie surveyed the scene from the edge of the barn and breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s perfect, just like I promised.”
Four ponies were playing some light jazz while the the guests mingled. In just a few minutes she’d give the signal and they’d switch to the traditional wedding march.
She turned to the barn’s interior, where Vinyl Scratch was preparing the other half of the musical entertainment. Her DJ booth was surrounded by speakers bigger than she was.
“Are you ready to party, Vinyl?”
The white unicorn flipped up her magenta sunglasses. “Are you kidding? I’ve been planning this since Tav got engaged! I’ve got remixes of all her favorite classics, plus some new stuff that’s really going to bust some heads.”
“And she’s okay with that, right?”
“Tav? Totally! That’s why she asked me to do the music. Once the dance gets started we’ll blow the lid off this barn.”
“Great, let’s get this wedding started!”
Octavia took her first step down the aisle. This was it, this was the wedding. Part of her wanted to just stand there for a moment and take it all in. She couldn’t believe all of these ponies were here for her and Concerto, and all the trouble that six ponies in particular had gone to make this day happen.
Delicious smells wafted past her nose. The Cakes had more than outdone themselves, and apparently somepony else had as well. Mr. and Mrs. Cake were standing on either side of an impressive buffet that spanned three tables. A dozen more tables were piled high with various apple-infused treats.
There must’ve been more deserts here than guests, and certainly more than enough wedding cake for everypony to have seconds. The wedding cake looked even better than she remembered; layer upon layer of white icing, ribbon, and musical notes made of frosting. Two miniature ponies made of sculpted sugar stood at the summit of the cake, the greatest testament of all to the Cake’s culinary skills.
She couldn’t stare at the cake. Not now. The real sight to see was down the aisle in front of her. Concerto, the stallion of her dreams, was waiting at the front next to his father. Princess Twilight was standing on the stage just beyond him. From here it almost looked like her eyes were closed, which was probably just a trick of the light.
A few steps were all it took to bring her and Concerto nose to nose. The wait was almost over; one quick ceremony and they’d officially start their life together. For a moment her eyes only saw his smiling face. Her ears told her something else entirely. The distinct sound of teeth chattering was overtaking the wedding music.
She glanced over and saw Fluttershy standing nearby. The best mare’s dress really did look good on her, although nopony in the audience would be able to tell if she kept shaking so much.
Concerto noticed too and whispered to her. “Fluttershy, are you okay?”
“I’m… f-fine. I just have to stand here… just have to stand here…”
Octavia gestured toward the stage, and Concerto followed. The music faded as they ascended the steps and approached Twilight.
They stood there for a moment, waiting for her to start the opening remarks. Twilight’s wings were spread in a traditional royal pose, and her eyes were shut. The smile on her face was almost too calm.
Concerto cleared his throat. Twilight didn’t move a muscle.
Somepony in the audience did the same. Guests shifted in their chairs and started to whisper.
Octavia leaned forward. “Princess? Princess Twilight? Are you awake?”
Twilight’s eyes shot open. “Mare and Colt!”
The whispering in the audience intensified. Twilight looked over the couple standing in front of her and tried to smile. “I… uh. Mares and Gentlecolts, we’re gathered here today to… today to…”
Her eyes slid shut and her voice dropped to a whisper. “To… page eight hundred and seven… vow… noun… solemn promise…”
Spike’s head popped up behind the stage. One clawed hand reached up and gave Twilight’s tail a sharp yank.
Once again she was awake. “Ah! Sorry about that everypony. Let me start over. We’re gathered here today to witness the union of Octavia Melody and Concerto. Their love is as deep and pure as…”
This time she wasn’t asleep, she was staring at the sky overhead. “What the hay is that?”
Octavia didn’t dare turn around to look. She was already having trouble breathing. If she turned and saw her friends and family squirming in their seats she’d have to be carried off the stage.
Somepony in the distance was shouting incoherently. Their raspy voice sounded familiar. Wasn’t that the pegasus from the weather team, Rainbow Dash? What was she saying?
The afternoon sun disappeared. For a moment she thought she was blacking out; then the rain drops started to fall.
Concerto tapped her on the shoulder and pointed up. “Uh, Tavi…”
Rainbow Dash zoomed overhead, her trajectory set on the barn’s open doors. “Run for your lives, it’s gonna blow!”
She looked and immediately wished she hadn’t. Deep black clouds were spreading through the sky like smoke. Sunlight didn’t stand a chance. Their wedding was instantly moved from two in the afternoon to two in the morning.
She turned back to Twilight. “Skip to the end.”
“Huh?”
“Just skip to the pronouncement so we can get this over with.”
“Right, sorry. I now pronounce you mare and–”
Thunder rattled the heavens and ground alike. Lightning immediately followed. Fluttershy let out a scream and tore down the aisle. One of her hooves caught on the carpet and she crashed into the third row of seats.
Pinkie came out of nowhere and pushed Twilight aside. She stood on her back hooves and tried to get the crowd’s attention. “Everypony, it’s okay! It’s just a little cloud cover. We can still have the wedding, we can still make it perf–”
Rain came down like water out of a firehose. Octavia stared at Concerto through her veil, which now looked more like a shower curtain. They stared at each other with the same look of incredulity: What do we do now?
From the stage they could see everything unravel. Their guests were running around in search of shelter and finding none. The entire reception area was boxed in by tables full of food; the only way out was the narrow opening at the far end of the aisle.
Vinyl Scratch’s voice, amplified by her sound system, boomed over the chaotic shouts. “Everypony in the barn! Everypony in the barn!”
This time the food tables didn’t stop them. Apple pies, cupcakes, and fritters splattered on the ground as ponies stampeded for the nearest roof.
Concerto started down the steps and motioned for her to follow. “Come on Tavi, let’s run for it!”
Pinkie dropped to her knees and held out a hoof. “No, don’t go! You’re getting married, you have to! I promised you’d get married. I promised it’d be perfect…”
Octavia followed him down the steps. As soon as her hoof touched the first step she felt the weight of her now soaked wedding dress holding her back. It felt ten times heavier, but she could still manage. She reached for the next step and heard a pop. She glanced back as she walked and saw the thin fabric tearing apart under the strain.
Amid all the commotion she could still hear Rarity’s scream. The white unicorn was in the second row, bawling into the back of one of the chairs while Spike tried in vain to comfort her.
Octavia kept walking. The dress continued to tear until the back half fell off on the ground. It didn’t matter now. The dress was ruined, and so was the wedding.
She wasn’t going to run for the barn, not when she was already soaked. Instead she stared at the rainwater pooling around her hooves. “So much for my hooficure.”
She stomped a hoof down and water splashed in her face. It didn’t matter what she said or how loud she said it, everypony else was in the barn by now. “So much for the wedding, so much our our perfect day! Thank you Pinkie Pie, if it wasn’t for you we’d be…”
Her reflection stared back up at her. In her mind the abysmal skies in the background were replaced with the ballroom at Canterlot Castle. This was the Grand Galloping Gala all over again.
“Every time we meet, Pinkie. Every single time you show up something bad happens to me. First the Gala performance gets ruined, and then… and then…”
She saw something else in the reflection. Her engagement ring was still hanging around her neck. A few minutes ago it’d been safely tucked inside her dress. Now it was just dangling there; a year and a half of Concerto’s savings distilled down to one shiny expression of his love and commitment.
“Did you know he proposed to me that night, Pinkie? Even after I got home at three in the morning, missed my own surprise party, talked his ear off about what a horrible night I’d had… Who cares if the Gala was a mess. I still got engaged, right? And so help me we’re still getting married.”
Put one hoof in front of the other. That’s all she needed to do. The barn’s open door was a square of welcoming light; the only safe haven from the drenched midnight of the reception.
As she was about to enter the crowded scene inside the barn, she heard something new. Amid the wails of inconvenienced guests was the soft and unmistakable sound of somepony crying. She peeked around the edge of the building and saw a pink form sitting on a hay bale.
“Pinkie, you’re going to catch a cold if you stay out here.”
“Go on inside, just leave me here.”
“But–”
“I’m so sorry I ruined your wedding, Octavia. I tried so hard to make the Gala up to you, I made a Pinkie Promise and… and…” She was lost in tears.
Octavia walked over sat down next to her. “Pinkie, this was my wedding, I’m the one who should be crying. Do I look like I am?”
“N-no. Why not?”
Octavia shook her head. “I don’t really know. I mean, yeah this is a disaster, but right now I don’t care.”
“I wish you’d told me no. I didn’t deserve to plan your wedding, not after the Gala.”
“Pinkie, do you know where I’d be right now if it wasn’t for you?”
“Happily married.”
“Hah, I wish. I’d be sitting in some stuffy orchestra pit in Canterlot, counting bits in my head and wondering how many years until Con and I could afford to have a party half as fancy as this one.”
“Really?”
“Really. Want to know what I really want? It’s not a huge reception, fairy tale dress, and giant cake.”
Pinkie rubbed a hoof across her teary eyes. The rain made her effort nearly pointless. “What do you want?”
Octavia held up the chain around her neck. The diamond on her engagement ring glittered in the low light. “I want to have some fun with my friends, I want to eat some great food, and I want to get a photograph of Con and I being happy on our special day. Most of all, I just want to get married to my special somepony.”
Pinkie’s familiar smile reappeared. “Sounds to me like you want a party!”
“I guess I do.”
“Then let’s get in there and make it happen!”
The interior of the barn was a war zone. Ponies were everywhere, and none of them were happy. Some were trying to wring water out of their jackets and hats, others were sitting despondently on bales of hay, and all were muttering about what a travesty this was. Mr. and Mrs. Cake were crying over what little remained of their signature creation. The wedding cake was now missing most of its frosting and the sugar sculpture on the top looked more like abstract art than ponies at the altar.
Octavia and Pinkie pushed their way through the crowd until they reached Vinyl’s DJ booth.
Concerto ran up to his bride and offered her a towel. “There you are, Tavi, I thought you were right behind me. Are you okay? Applejack’s bringing everypony towels and cider.”
“I’m fine, Con. You still want to do this, right?”
“Marry you? Of course I do.”
“Then get ready, we’re not leaving this barn until Princess Twilight makes it official.”
She knocked on the side of the nearest speaker. “Vinyl, mind if I borrow your microphone?”
Vinyl held out a hoof to help her up to the booth. “You got it Tav. Are you okay?”
“I’m better than okay, and I’ll tell you why.”
She tapped a hoof on the mic. “Everypony, I’d just like to say…”
Nopony other than Concerto noticed.
“Hey!”
Her amplified shout bounced off the barn walls and brought everything to a standstill. Suddenly the only sound was the rain battering the roof overhead, and all eyes were on her.
“That’s better. Thank you everypony, for coming to our wedding. I know this isn’t the high-class affair you all expected, but that’s not what’s important. Pinkie, could you come up here please?”
Pinkie jumped onto the stage and stood by her side. Octavia put a hoof around her. “I’d like to thank Pinkie Pie and all her friends for making this day possible. This might not be a glitzy Canterlot ballroom, but if it wasn’t for them Con and I would still wondering how we’d be able to afford one. Rarity, Applejack, Fluttershy, Spike, Rainbow Dash, Princess Twilight, Mr. and Mrs. Cake; you’re the reason Con and I are here today, so let’s make it count. Pinkie?”
Pinkie took the mic and stood up tall. “All right everypony, it’s party time! Applejack and Rainbow Dash, get us some chairs on the double. Fluttershy, get Twilight something sugary to eat. Mr. and Mrs. Cake, get in that kitchen and save the wedding cake. Rarity and Spike, make this barn sparkle!”
She leaned away from the mic and smiled at the DJ. “And Vinyl? Some montage music please, and make it loud.”
“You got it, Pinkie.”
Thirty minutes passed by in a blur. Suddenly every guest had a seat, warm towel, and a mug of steaming hot cider. The refrosted cake, now decorated with apple slices, was topped with two wooden bows borrowed from the pony jazz quartet. Any decorations that survived the downpour were now gracing the barn’s interior walls.
Octavia leaned against Concerto and smiled. “Is this the same barn?”
Rarity approached them with a small cloth bundle floating next to her. “It most certainly is not; this is your wedding venue, not a smelly old apple barn.”
“I heard that!” Applejack shouted in the distance.
Octavia smiled. “It’s wonderful, Rarity.”
She looked away and blushed. “I’m terribly sorry about your dress, darling. I suppose I could’ve restrained my creative vision a tad more for the sake of longevity.”
“It’s fine Rarity, really it is. I don’t think any wedding dress is meant to survive a rain storm.”
“You’re too kind. Still, I can’t let you get married in the remains of that frock, not when you could be wearing this instead.”
The cloth bundle unfurled to reveal a new wedding veil studded with jewels. “Oh Rarity, it’s beautiful.”
“Don’t thank me, this is simply my amends for a, dare I say it, crime I committed against fashion itself.”
Pinkie tapped on the microphone to quell the quiet chatter. “Is everypony ready?”
Concerto glanced at Octavia and nodded. “We’ve been ready for two years.”
Twilight, fully awake and slightly wired after downing half an apple pie, was standing at the front of the assembly. “I’m so sorry about before, everypony. I tend to study when I get nervous and… well the idea of marrying two ponies has me pretty nervous. I’ve read at least ten thousand different wedding speeches over the past week alone, but if it’s all right with the bride and groom I’d like to say something that I thought of myself.”
Octavia and Concerto stepped forward. He spoke while she donned her new veil. “We wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“Family and friends; we’re gathered here today to witness the marriage of Octavia Melody and Concerto, two ponies that I wish I’d met years ago. Getting to know them during the past few months has made one thing abundantly clear to me: they’re more than two ponies in love, they’re best friends that care about being with each other more than anything else. When they first asked me to marry them I was nervous about doing it wrong, but now that I know them I see that that isn’t possible. It isn’t about the wedding vows, it’s about who they’re for. These two ponies deserve each other, and I couldn’t possibly keep them apart a minute longer. Octavia and Concerto, I now pronounce you mare and stallion.”
If applause followed, Octavia didn’t hear it. Tears were running down her face as she stared into her husband’s eyes. “I love you, Con.”
“I love you too, Tavi.”
One kiss later, a whine traveled through the speakers. The couple turned to see Vinyl Scratch standing nearby with a two sheets of hoof-written music floating next to her.
“Tav, I get that you’re gonna open your wedding presents later, but this one can’t wait. Think you two can cut it?”
Octavia took the sheets from her and looked over the notes. “This looks an awful lot like one of Beethooven piece’s played at double time with a lot more bass.”
“I call it Vinyl’s Fifth Symphony. It’s got parts for violin and double bass, and your instruments are in the back corner with my records. Wanna jam?”
Octavia and Concerto looked at each other and started to smile in unison. She gestured to the DJ booth and set her veil at an angle. “This is our party, let’s make some music.”

Morning fog hid most of the train station from view. An afternoon, evening, and night of unexpected rain left Ponyville quiet and humid.
Octavia leaned against their pile of luggage and yawned. She was wearing a white collar and pink bow tie, her standard dress for playing a fancy party. “Why’d this gig have to be so early?”
Concerto reached over to straighten her tie. “Because this way we’ll have plenty of time to look for our new apartment.”
She batted his hoof away and set to work on his own crooked tie. “And once we find it we’re sleeping in for a week. After a party like that I think that’s all the honeymoon I can take. My ears are still ringing from… what did she call it? Vinyl’s Fifth Symphony?”
“Maybe we should’ve skipped the encore performance.”
Hooves knocking against the wooden platform drew their attention. Six ponies and one dragon were approaching through the fog.
“Pinkie?”
Pinkie waved. “Surprise. We just came to say goodbye.”
Fluttershy bowed her head. “And that we’re sorry.”
Applejack took her hat in her hooves. “Mighty sorry. Pinkie planned out everything so perfect and we had to go and mess it up.”
Rainbow Dash had bags under her eyes and a sleep-deprived scowl on her face. “Would’ve been fine if the dumb cloud shipment hadn’t been a week early.”
“Come now, Rainbow,” Rarity chided, “we all had a hoof in the disaster.”
Octavia held up a hoof. “You’re forgetting about the good part. Sure, reception didn’t turn out like we expected but you ponies pulled it together in the end. It’s like I said, we wouldn’t even be married if it wasn’t for all of you.”
Twilight blushed. “That’s sweet of you to say, Octavia. I still feel bad about falling asleep.”
Spike stifled a laugh. “And I’m never letting you live it down.”
Twilight glared at him while everypony else laughed.
A bundle of paper rose out of Twilight’s saddlebag and set itself next to their mountain of luggage. “I don’t suppose you have room for one more present.”
Concerto eyed the package. “Oh we couldn’t, not after everything you’ve already done prin–”
“Twilight, just Twilight.”
“err, Twilight. What you said at our wedding was thanks enough.”
Pinkie jumped up and down. “Oh come on. Open it, open it, open it!”
Octavia laughed. “Fine, fine. We’ll open it.”
The package was rectangular and flat, like a book. Once the paper was torn open dozens of photographs slid out into Octavia’s hooves. Everything from the wedding, both the failed reception and the successful party, was captured here on film. The final picture was of them playing their instruments while Vinyl backed them on up on her synthesizer.
“How did you… how did you know? This is just what we wanted.”
Spike smiled and took a bow. “Pinkie asked me to keep an ear out for what you two wanted, so when Concerto here kept talking photos…”
Concerto stared at him. “You asked how I proposed… You said you just wanted some suggestions.”
Spike’s gaze briefly went to Rarity and then his face turned red. “I… uh… it was all part of me being your personal assistant, that’s all!”
The whistle of an oncoming train filled the station. Octavia glanced over to their bags and then to the track. “That’s our train. If we’re not on it we’ll miss our gig.”
Rarity kept trying to look Spike in the face, despite his attempts to turn away. “Why Spikey Wikey, why have you gone all red in the face? What’s the matter?”
“Uh… Let me help you with the bags, Concerto!”
The little dragon ran forward and hefted a load of suitcases twice is own size. “Next stop, Canterlot.”
