Chapters The Beast That Knows No Bounds
"I need a grenade resupply, Ziliag!" I shouted, a storm of projectiles howling above the trenches I took refuge in. I clicked a magazine into my boltgun, rising from my position, and returning fire. I fired with the fury of the chapter at my back, felling dozens of creatures, the casings of the bolt rounds careening off the hard earth below me.
"Catch, Corvane!" Ziliag tossed me a satchel pack of explosive. I caught it, tearing the pack open to reveal the contents within, arming two frag grenades at once, and hurling them towards the creatures encircling us. I continued to throw explosives until the bag ran dry, and returned to my bolter, letting the enemy taste my fury. The streaks of explosive bolts created an almost dazzling effect, and in a way, the carnage was almost beautiful. I once again felt my bolter go dry, and reloaded my final clip into my gun, and aiming for the heads of the beasts approaching us. I attempted to conserve my shots, but the creatures began to swarm us, forcing me to waste precious rounds. Throwing aside my boltgun as I heard the click of the magazine, I drew my combat knife and bolt pistol.
"Ziliag!"
"Yes, Corvane?!"
"I'm not going to die here," I said defiantly, slashing apart a beast with my knife, before shooting a creature that was approaching Ziliag from behind, "And neither are you. We've come too far my brother ..." I gutted an enemy , tearing it open and decapitating it to be sure, "Too many have been lost ..." I spammed my bolt pistol until it emptied its clip, "So what do you say Ziliag ..." A beast pried the boltgun from my hand, and I eviscerated it before retrieving my sidearm, " In the name of the God - Emperor , The Fourth Company ..." I hesitated for a moment, but there was no turning back now, "And in the name of Equis!" As I roared defiantly an enemy took me by surprise, delivering a concussive blow sending me sprawling a few feet away. My vision was blurry as I saw the monstrosity approaching.
The knife and boltgun were out of reach, though I tried desperately to dash for them. Another blow struck me, rending my breastplate, but I continued to crawl towards my weapons. For a moment I thought It might end here. And for a moment I believed my doubts, but if there is one thing I know as a fact, it's that the Emperor protects. The limb of the behemoth pins me to the ground, even as I struggle to break free. Time seems to stop, and my actions with it. And for just a split second, I remembered my time, however short it may have been on this planet. Of the drop pod insertion, the confused wails of the first wave of fighting, of agony and distrust. But I also recall my time spent with Twilight and her friends, and of the Court of Princesses ...
Yet even so, I'm starting to realize something as I spend more and more time on this planet. If the Emperor Protects Mankind ... Then who protects the inhabitants of this planet? For all this time I've been here, I've always been in denial of the answer, for I've known it all along, but now I'm ready to accept my destiny. My name is Corvane Valorus of The Salamanders Chapter.
And I defend Equestria.
144 Hours Earlier
"Ziliag? Do you ever wonder about why we fight?" I inquired.
"Corvane, we fight for the Emperor, and in the name of Mankind. We fight to ensure that we continue as a species ... "
"Yes, I know, it's what we've all been told time and time again, what has been preached to us by the Chaplain. But I wonder sometimes brother, why must we always be at war? We have a million million enemies who would like nothing better than to gut us, and yet, I hold out hope for the day when humanity and the xenos can finally put aside their petty differences, and co-exist. Then we can finally turn our attention to those who cannot be reasoned with ..." I said, drifting off into the memories of wars long past, and of war that never seemed to end.
"Such a way of thinking is optimistic, but dangerous nonetheless Corvane. We must--"
"--Unquestioningly fight for the Emperor, I've heard it all before, Ziliag. I don't doubt that humanity needs protectors, and we happen to be those guardians. That much is fact, but I just dream of a time when war isn't what defined humanity. And this whole bloody galaxy for that matter ... Trust me Ziliag, I am no traitor, nor am I a heretic, nor do I sympathize with the xenos scourge ... I just wish it didn't have to be this way."
"I believe you Corvane, and I agree that war is not the most desirable state of affairs to constantly remain in, but such is the 41st millenium, and such is our duty to ensure that it doesn't spread too far or too fast. That is why fight," Ziliag replied, loading several godwyn bolter magazines.
I looked to my own arms, prepped and ready with plentiful reserve magazines. I walked over to assemble my explosives pouch, securing several fragmentation grenades, and even slipped two krak grenades inside. Fastening the storage pouch to my armor, I returned to my place sitting across from Ziliag, securing my bolt pistol firmly to my belt, and beginning to account for my extra ammunition. I could hear the heavy metal footsteps of the sarge clanging down the hall.
"Tee minus ten minutes battle brothers, make ready for Thunderhawk insertion. I want my squad prepped and ready in the hangar bay!" he shouted, continuing down the corridors of the ship, readying his Space Marines.
I glanced at Ziliag, who had completed loading his final clip of bolt pistol ammunition. "I better get down to the armory, my heavy bolter is waiting for me." He patted me on the shoulder before exiting the room, leaving me to my prep. I took up my boltgun, while snatching my helmet on the way out of the room. I continued down the halls of the strike cruiser, donning my helmet as I entered the lift down to the hangar bay. I was greeted by several other devastator marines, all equipped and armored in a nearly identical fashion as me, although one carried a flamer as his main armament, though I had been lucky to acquire a full set of MK VIII Errant power armor following the liberation of a previously xenos held world. I was surprised to say the least, but Dac'tyr felt I deserved it. A great honor indeed, especially for a devastator marine.
Still, as I descended the lift surrounded by my fellow kin, I couldn't help but feel alone. It was not a feeling of distrust, nor was it one of depression, I simply felt different from those around me. I felt as if sometimes no one understood what I was trying to tell them, even when I clearly and eloquently presented my points. Nonetheless, I would fight and die for each and every one of them, for no matter how alienated I sometimes felt, they were my brothers.
The lift came to a halt, the security fence retracting as we stepped out onto the floor of the hangar bay. The first few marines jogged over to their respective squads already starting to assemble besides their respective gunships. I caught a glimpse of Ziliag disembarking from another lift across the floor, nodding to him. We remained in view of each other, jogging over to meet our battle brothers beside Thunderhawk Five. We aligned ourselves in rows across from each other, eying the marines flooding in from all sides. I raised my bolter diagonally across my chest pointing upwards, the last of the company filing into formation. The thud of boots against the floor ceased, and a bulkhead door opened, revealing Dac’tyr, the Captain of the Salamanders Fourth Battle Company. We stood at attention, the Chaplain and Apothecary flanking the Captain.
“At ease my friends. Today, we undertake a large scale sweep of the planet below. Our sensors have detected the world is teeming with biological life, and from what little info we could gather, the apothecary has put together a short list of life forms we’ve observed on the planet below. Your sergeants will brief you on the way down. However, something else has drawn us to this planet, for the world seems unremarkable in its appearance, but it holds a strong psychic presence. The chapter Librarius sent us here for this very reason. We know nothing of the psykers below, aside from the fact they exist. Your sole purpose is recon, not extermination … “
The astartes stood at attention shifting uneasily as the captain paused for a moment before returning to his speech.
“As Space Marines, your duty, first and foremost, is to the Emperor of Mankind, and if the bioforms below show signs of taint, waste no time in their eradication, but remember brothers: Righteous fury and needless conflict are not one in the same. Space Marines, to your stations!” the Captain roared, raising his power sword as if to signal a charge.
The ten squads that had assembled on the deck filed into the gunships, One, Three, and Five holding ninety marines -- six tactical squads accompanied by two devastator squads, and one assault squad. Gunship Two carried two whirlwinds, while Four and Six carried two razorbacks each. The ninth Thunderhawk was loaded up with two predator tanks, and Ten’s cargo was unknown, as I did not catch a glimpse of what was to be stored inside as I took my seat in the drop ship. The remaining five gunships each carried two Rhino transports, save for Thunderhawk Fifteen, which was stuffed with combat supplies, and accompanied by a devastator squad.
I took my seat inside of Thunderhawk Five, right beside Ziliag, equipped in full battle regalia, and brandishing his heavy bolter, Thanatos, because being a veteran of the devastator squads has its advantages, after all. We sat in silence for several moments, the glowing light from our helmets illuminating the dark cargo hold. Aboard our transport were two squads of tactical marines, equipped with flamers and meltaguns, the weapons of choice of the Salamanders. I held my godwyn pattern bolter tight, unsure of what to expect. As I contemplated these thoughts, the gunship lifted off, and I could sense we had exited the hangar, beginning our descent to the surface below. A sergeant from one of the tactical marines squads stood up a few astartes down from me, grasping his bolter beside him, and clutching the railing above, and steadying himself from the turbulence of atmospheric entry. He began to speak calmly, trying to reassure us of our intent.
“Battle brothers, as the Captain explained aboard the strike cruiser, our mission is simple: We have detected bioforms on this planet, and as such, it is our duty to investigate the potential threat of the psykers on this planet. I’m uploading the data we currently have on the life forms below, its mostly just plants, but there are a few animals we’ve managed to catalogue as well. We’re dropping in four minutes. Make ready, Space Marines. “
The sound of magazines being secured and loaded into boltguns could be heard along with the clicking of promethium canisters as they were slotted into place, and a dim orange flame burned at the tip of each flamer. The low buzzing sound of the meltaguns was the chorus to this cacaphony of military hardware. I checked over my bolter once more, making sure I was ready, and then quickly eyeing Thanatos. I didn’t even need to ask Ziliag if he was prepared, simply nodding at him, and taking a deep breath.
I could feel the landing gear hit the ground, jarring the squads inside for a moment before the forward ramp opened, and the marines began to pour out. Heavy weapons teams began to set up at various vantage points, behind rocks and trees, for we had landed in a dense forest, close to where animal bioforms were detected I noted, browsing the data in my helmet interface. I filed out of the Thunderhawk, taking up a position beside Ziliag, resting my bolter upon a boulder, scanning the area for movement. The tactical squads had begun to fan out when a massive streak of magma-colored energy streaked through the sky, towards the Thunderhawk gunship that had begun to take off. The beam hit the gunship, forcing it backwards, and damaging one of the engines.
“Thunderhawk Five under fire! We need a ground visual, do you read TAC-6 and 7? We need a visual, we’re not picking up anything on the sensors,” I could hear the pilots say over the vox channels. I began to feel the ground shake slightly, and I readjusted my footing, digging in next to Ziliag, who was planted firmly beside the boulder, heavy bolter ready to go. I tried to find any signs of movement for several seconds before a tactical squad of ten marines began to advance. They moved slowly, cautiously, keeping an eye out for danger. All was silent, the marines moving up through the thick forest like snakes slinking along in tall grass.
Another streak of orange energy soared through the tree line, striking a tactical marine dead in the chest, knocking him off his feet, and sending him flying backwards.
“Thunderhawk five, we have a visual, repeat, we have visual, linking coordinates!” I could hear from the vox channels. The trees seemed to split apart as the transmission ended, revealing a hulking beast several dozen meters tall. His body resembled that of a horse, and his upper half was the deformed shape of a man, demonic in its appearance, especially the horns.
“Daemon! Daemon! Concentrate fire, and request whirlwind barrages at these coordinates: Zero Five …“ the Sergeant continued over vox, relaying the position of the beast to the whirlwind artillery pieces. Ziliag opened fire, pounding the chest of the creature with diamantine tipped wrath. The whole of three squads opened fire, bolts flying, and flamers setting the creature alight. A meltagun tore a hole in the leg of the creature as it let out a mighty roar.
“HOW DARE YOU INSOLENT PONI-- What’s this? What exactly are you whelps?” the centaurian creature let out a hearty laugh that shook the ground.
“WE ARE THE SPACE MARINES! WE ARE THE EMPEROR’S FURY!”, a sergeant of a tactical marine squad shouted, charging the creature, chainsword raised, and bolt pistol firing. The marine chucked both of his frags as he fastened the empty bolt pistol to his belt, strategically aiming them at the hooves of one of the feet. The shrapnel impacted the centaurs flesh, sending it reeling forward in pain, allowing the sergeant to grasp onto the fur of one of the arms, viciously ripping away at the limb with his chainsword.
“You idiotic parasites! Die at the hand of Tirek!” The beast grasped the sergeant with his gargantuan hand, crushing him into a bloody pulp, and tossing him aside,the body of the marine crashing into a tree and toppling it. All the while, copious amounts of ammunition continued to be pumped into the one known as Tirek’s body. I reloaded my bolter for the third time, glancing over at Ziliag, keeping a steady stream of rounds on Tirek’s chest.
I saw two tactical marines swept aside by the beasts hands, as he fired another beam of energy at a melta wielding marine, sundering his power armor, and sending him sprawling backwards, dead.
Tirek roared in anger once more as I tossed a frag grenade at his large feet, the shrapnel causing him to wince in pain. Tirek attempted to grasp a marine armed with a flamer, and opened his cavernous maw, holding the marine before him, but not quite eating him. Tirek seemed almost surprised at the result of this: The marine squirmed, and managed to squeeze the trigger on his weapon, setting the centaurs face alight. Recoiling in agony, the beast began to drop to its knees, battered and bloodied.
I tossed two more frag grenades at its equine torso, now closer to the ground, and I could see several other tactical marines moving up to make use of their meltaguns. But, as they approached, the distinctive noise of artillery shells could be heard, and they ran for cover. I ducked behind my boulder, joined momentarily by Ziliag, laughing in earnest.
“What’s so funny?” I asked.
“That!” He pointed to Tirek, as the shells impacted, blowing apart the behemoth with ease. The humanoid top half was completely eviscerated the shower of massive gore and guts strewn across the ground and treetops. The carcass of the equine half lay limp upon the ground, battered and torn open.
“We just killed a bloody greater daemon Corvane, perk up!”, Ziliag cheered heartily, raising his weapon above his head and celebrating.
“Ziliag, I don’t believe … I mean, I don’t actually think that was a daemon. I could feel a psychic presence, for sure, but it wasn’t twisted like that of Chaos, not in the same way at least. Nor was it anywhere near as powerful."
“Ah you’re just a nance me boy, of course it was a demon! Did you see how many marines it killed?!”
“Yes, Ziliag, I’m aware that it slew five of our battle brothers, but that’s what concerns me. Greater daemons, even the weakest, are no pushovers. This being was no daemon; it was too weak, and it energy was not right. It was twisted and dark like that of chaos, but not of corruption and evil. It felt almost like it was … ambitious.”
“Ambitious? How the hell do you figure that, mate?”
“I can’t explain it, not in any way you’d understand, but its psychic power, it didn’t seem to come from the warp. Look, Ziliag, both you and I have been around, and faced down the forces of chaos, and you and I both know, they were never this easy to defeat, nor did they feel as this one did. This one was something different.” Ziliag sighed in response to my rebuttal.
“I suppose, Corvane, but then what the hell was it? The data files show no indication of anything even remotely like it. It’s entirely possible it’s just an indigenous species, but it concerns me that a naturally occurring beast would posses the power psykers hone throughout their whole lives. It just doesn’t seem plausible.”
We were interrupted by the remaining six marines of the tactical squad, dragging their fallen comrades back to the damaged Thunderhawk which had provided fire support during the encounter, scorching the beast with lascannons and ravaging it with heavy bolter fire. Still, even as the beast had fallen, the gunship wobbled in the air unsteadily, awaiting the wounded, or dead astartes that were certain to result from the combat. Setting down on damaged landing gear, the four astartes were loaded into the cargo bay while the other six marines remained with the contingent to continue fighting.
“You know, Ziliag, after a century of bloodshed and death, it never gets any easier to see your fellow brothers carted away …“
“I couldn’t agree more, brother …“ Ziliag replied solemnly, before starting towards the vanguard of the force that had begun to move cautiously through the jungle. I followed behind Ziliag, listening to vox chatter relaying coordinates of First Contact. I radioed a friendly assault marine from another expeditionary force, and he replied they had seen nothing just yet. I wondered what else this planet had in store for us …
I checked my explosives pouch; only the krak grenades and one fragmentation grenade remained. I still had plenty of bolter rounds for both of my weapons, and Ziliag showed no signs of a depleted ammunition store.
We crept through the thicket for several hours, surveying the dense forest, looking for signs of life. We came upon a few startled animals, resembling those first found on Holy Terra, like several deers and birds. Amusing.
“Wait my brothers, I have a visual on bioforms, several dozen. They appear to inhabit a small settlement that seems to be on par with feudal world tech judging by the architecture of the structures …“ said a tactical marine over the vox channel. I pressed a small button on the side of my helmet, allowing me to speak into the channel.
“What is the appearance of said bioforms? Do they appear to be hostile or otherwise corrupted?”
“They are equine in nature, walking on all fours with a large head and comparatively small body. One second, let me get to a better position … Alright, my scanners are relaying the data to the Apothecary as we speak, stay out of sight.”
“Copy …“ several marines responded through the vox. I took cover behind a tree, trying to see up ahead to where the tactical marines had reached a hill. I nudged Ziliag on the shoulder, gesturing for him to follow me. He complied, falling in behind me as we crept up into the treeline of the hill, joining the tactical squad. Ziliag hunkered down beside a particularly large tree, deploying Thanatos where he had a good line of sight over the settlement. I scoped in with my auspex, scanning for various things, ranging from radiation to gas emissions. The readings indicated a human breathable atmosphere with almost no radiation or gas emissions. I began to survey the town more closely, zooming in with my helmet’s array of sensory tools.
The small town was bustling with activity, equine creatures of all colors dashing to and fro, tending to various tasks. Simple ground ones, which seemed to be bulkier and larger than the other similar species present, hauled large loads, and were at work in the large fields surrounding the village. However, what perturbs me the most is that certain individuals appear to make use of powerful psyker abilities, such as levitating objects encased in an aura of energy. It seemed to resemble the energy bolts Tirek had attacked them with, but in a stable form. Only equines with horns upon their foreheads seemed to be able to perform such tasks, so it is only reasonable to assume these creatures, at least at first glance, are the source of the powerful psychic readings the Captain spoke of.
Still, though, another species of equines soared through the air with surprising grace, given the wingspan to body size ratio. But, what made these seemingly normal creatures interesting was not in their flight capabilities, but in the fact that they seemed to be able to interact with cloud formations at will, as if they were solid.
“I have a bad feeling about this place Corvane. Everything looks so … peaceful. We discussed this earlier, about how the galaxy is at war, and I find it a bit hard to believe that a planet as seemingly defenseless as this could exist … “
“Put your doubts to rest Ziliag, they appear to be simple beings. They’re not hurting anyone as far as we can tell, and from what I’ve been hearing over vox, the other squads have spotted the same settlement from various points. Ziliag, if these creatures are the disturbances we seek, then we should mean no harm.”
“Yeah, just keep saying that until one of them blasts you with a psychic bolt, won’t seem so friendly then …” muttered Ziliag. I payed him no attention, readjusting my auspex to hone in on the energy aura of the horned equines. A few seconds later, the read out in my helmet read: INCONCLUSIVE. Damn.
“This is a direct order from Captain Dac’tyr, we have orders to advance into the settlement, but do not open fire unless fired upon first. Do not harm the residents, all armored vehicles, stay in reserve for now. Devastator squad one set up a position at the coordinates I’ve sent to you, all tactical squads advance and secure the town. Assault squads are not to engage jump packs. Also, I want devastator squad two to move up and secure the --“
The vox transmission cut out suddenly, as a blinding spectrum of colors washed over me.I raised my hand to shield my eyes, surprised that something so intensely bright was present on a feudal world. My vision started to return as I felt around for Ziliag who was still to my right, brushing up against his pauldron. At the same time, I could also hear the frantic chatter over the vox channels, giving orders to advance on the town immediately. I began lurching forwards, my vision still plagued by the after effect of the intense light. Gripping my bolter firmly, I broke into a jog, while Ziliag followed right behind me.
“Seismic disruptions have been detected at the center of the town, brace yourselves.” a tactical marine hollered over the vox channels. I began to feel the ground beneath me shake violently, nearly losing my footing as a tower of gleaming crystal erupted from the ground, rising above the tops of the other buildings.
“Ziliag, follow me! We’re going to investigate the source of the seismic tremor. Let’s go!” I shouted, motioning him to follow. With a quick nod, he started into as fast a jog a heavy weapons marine could manage. I gripped my bolter beside me, running into the town with Ziliag and several tactical marines following.
By now the creatures had noticed us, and had begun to scream and flee in terror. The misunderstanding of our entry into an otherwise peaceful village gnawed at my thoughts. For a moment, I imagined the citizens of Nocturne, being stormed by the Traitor legions … The fear , the dread, the feeling of certain doom. I nearly came to a halt for a moment, before remembering my task, pushing the thoughts of empathy to the back of my mind for the time being.
Rounding a corner with Ziliag and a fireteam of tactical marines, we came into full view of the colossal crystal construct. It had many branching tendrils, and gleamed in the light of the alien sun. A tactical sergeant rushed past me, leading his fireteam directly towards the building. Ziliag and I stood our ground, providing support should the need arise. I removed my helmet after taking my position, making sure the atmosphere was breathable one last time before I did so, and placing my helmet on my belt. I returned to the iron sights of my bolter.
But, just as the sergeant was about to smash the door to the construct apart, the doors swung open, revealing several more equine creatures. Two of them appeared to be substantially larger than the six smaller ones. We stared at eachother for a moment, as the sounds of the chaos raging around us seemed to dull. I met eyes with a lavender colored creature, and in that instant, if only for that very second, we understood each other. It could not possibly comprehend what I was, nor what my intent, or that of my battle brothers was, but we had reached an agreement, speaking to each other through. I was determined to fulfill the promises we had made to each other.
I lowered my bolter for a moment, before a marine yelled “DAEMON!! OPEN FIRE!!!” I glanced to where the bolter fire began to be directed at, atop the crystal fortress. An entity comprised of multiple parts, seemingly cobbled together, lay perched upon a branching tendril of the building. Boltgun rounds ripped into the structure, shattering it. The creature seemed to hover in the air as his perch collapsed. Then, just as a devastator marine fired a missile at the creature, it teleported to its right in a burst of light. As the fighting raged on, I frantically considered whether or not to fire, on the one hand it looked like a daemon, and possessed warp associated powers like teleportation and inexplicable flight capabilities. But still, it didn’t feel like a warp entity, for even though it’s psychic presence was massive, I didn’t sense anything in inherently wrong with it. It almost felt … natural. It is impossible to explain the presence of such a being, only to liken it to that of feeling the world around you, for it was certainly. there, and yet it required no thought to sense it, no effort. It was simply … there.
“Ziliang, cease fire!” I implored, pressing the button on my vox and commanding into the channel, “Marines, cease fire! Cease fire! It is not a daemon, brothers!” As soon as I had finished, the bolter fire ceased momentarily, a tactical marine dashing over to me. The creature simply levitated in the air, a disgruntled look upon its face.
“Brothers, these creatures mean no harm. Take pity upon them for the time being,” I said to the marines.
“What if they try to kill us Corvane? Your misplaced trust in these animals could get us all killed! All for what exactly? To save a few xenos civilians?” the tactical marine questioned impatiently, snarling at me.
“We are Space Marines brother, and the Emperor protects us from harm. Please, just give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Like Dac’tyr said, there is no reason to start a needless war,” I replied calmly.
“Aye, I agree with Corvane here,“ Ziliag backed me up. The tactical marine shook his head for a moment before returning to his fireteam, where their sergeant had approached the group of equines cautiously, bolt pistol trained on the so called daemon.
Sensing the air of authority the larger equines had about them, he respectfully sheathed his chainsword and bolt pistol, knowing full well it was a risky decision, even with my assurance about the daemon.
“I am Sergeant Arithias of the Salamanders Chapter, we mean you no harm xeno.” he spoke calmly, introducing himself to the band of equines. The large white creature shook a shocked expression of its face before beginning to speak … in perfect Low Gothic.
“It is an honor, Arithias …“ she said, bowing her head before him, “I am Princess Celestia,co-ruler of Equestria, and this is my sister, Luna.” She gestured to the other large equine, who also bowed her head respectfully.
“… Who are the rest of these creatures, then, Celestia? In particular, the daemonic-looking entity.” Arithias gestured to the floating beast, still a bit surprised by Celestia’s fluency in Low Gothic.
“That is Discord, he’s … a friend of mine,“ Celestia replied. Discord teleported once more, appearing beside Celestia, causing the sergeant to reach for his chainsword before Celestia gestured that he was not dangerous. “This is Rainbow Dash,” she said, gesturing toward a rainbow maned equine that possessed wings. ”This is Rarity, and that one is Applejack,” Celestia continued, motioning first to an alabaster horned creature with a frilly purple mane, and then to one colored orange with a blonde mane, and wearing a hat. “Finally, this is Princess Twilight Sparkle and, Fluttershy.” She motioned to the lavender being I had met eyes with earlier, and then to the butterscotch colored creature cowering behind her.
“Very good then, Celestia. Now, seeing the chaos we’ve wrought here, would you mind calming your subjects, and informing them we aren’t here to kill them.” Arithias replied.
The word kill caused Celestia to flinch slightly, but she obliged with a nod before stepping forward and informing Luna to tend to the unexpected guests. Celestia spread her impressive wings, soaring into the air, her announcement of our friendly intentions echoing throughout the town. I could hear vox chatter informing various squads not to open fire upon Celestia, and spreading the knowledge that the equines did indeed appear to be non-hostile.
But then the channel felt deathly silent as the distinctive sound of incoming direct orders were bellowed in our helmets. The frantic squads quieted down, before the grim voice of the Apothecary spoke.
“This is a message to all ground teams. I have analyzed as much of the data the various squad forces have relayed to me. I have sent you each what I have determined about the planet thus far … but there is a more pressing issue facing us. We just detected it on our sensors. Previously it was masked by the strange psionic reading the planet was giving off, interfering with the machine spirit of our Augurs. Captain Dac’tyr, you have the floor.”
“Thank you brother. As the Apothecary has alluded to, we face a much more pressing matter. Our Augurs have detected the bioforms of a pair of tyranid hive ships, believed to be the remnants of a tendril of Splinter Fleet Ophidia. Brothers, Exterminatus is out of the option with the supplies available currently. I have discussed the implications of such a force of tyranids with the Chaplain and the Apothecary, and we have come to the decision that we are holding this planet, no matter the cost.”
The ground teams around me remained silent, shocked by Dac’tyr’s course of action. I glanced over to Ziliag, who had removed his helmet. His mouth was agape for just a moment, before he noticed me, returning to his stoic disposition. The Tyrannic wars still echoed their horrors within him. Dac'tyr resumed his grim speech.
“Though we are hopelessly outnumbered, we cannot allow the Tyranids to take a planet so rich in biomass. I have already requisitioned reinforcements from the nearest force of six Imperial Guard Regiments, along with two companies from the Praetors Of Orpheus Chapter. I’ve even managed to send for a Deathwatch Kill-Team to aid us. All of our allies are en route to assist us, but even so they will not reach us in time. The Hive ships will be in range of our strike cruiser within 96 hours. We shall hold the line until reinforcements arrive Space Marines. We cannot let this planet fall." , said Dac'tyr authoritatively. The silence following the speech was nothing short of disturbing.
" For Vulkan He’stan!", cried a tactical sergeant over the vox suddenly.
" For our Primarch Vulkan!" , chimed an assault marine.
"And For the Emperor, we shall not fall!” , came the resounding warcry of the chaplain, galvanizing his company. Raucous roars of confidence bellowed from the marines on the ground. The vox roared with chants of victory and of determination.
“What exactly does any of that mean?” a soothing voice asked sheepishly. I turned to face the voice, and noticed Twilight standing behind me, listening to the speech coming from the helmet on my belt. I was a bit confused as to how I had not noticed her sneak up on me. I suppose I had gotten caught up in the speech. Still, I felt empathy for the creature, as alien as it was to me.
It almost startled me at how bold she was in approaching me, even after we had introduced our races to each other. Very bold indeed. It would be needed in the days to come. Even so, I had my doubts about the bloodbath that was to come ...
I knelt down, bringing my face closer to hers, trying not to scare her with my frightening complexion and glowing red eyes. I spoke in a very wistful and exasperated tone.
“It means we’re all going to die …“
48 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive
“Alright I need twelve las-cannon batteries up right away, let’s move it, men! You there, I need a fresh supply of dragon bolts in each and every heavy bolter, get as much as they’ll give!” barked a Arithias. I lugged a heavy bolter turret with me, hoisting it up onto its emplacement, as he instructed various battle brothers to perform numerous tasks.After placing the bolter turret, I ran back over to Arithias.
“Corvane, I’ve just received word that the Captain would like to meet with you and Sergeant Ziliag. Urgent. Get to the Thunderhawk gunship stationed at LZ Echo, he needs you on the bridge right now. Fetch Ziliag, I’ve got a lot of work to do down here,” said Arithias matter of factly.I nodded at him, dashing down the long corridors of Canterlot Castle.
Celestia had advised Dac’tyr not too long ago that if there was any place to make a stand, it was here. With limited forces, and war materiel, Dac’tyr had devised a plan nothing short of sheer lunacy, or at least that’s what the others in my squad have told me …
“Ziliag! There’s no time for questioning brother, just accompany me to LZ Echo!”, I hollered at him, not slowing my run. He seemed confused for a moment, but conceded, leaving his heavy bolter in the hands of another veteran devastator marine. We proceeded down the winding staircases, and out onto a makeshift landing pad on one of the open air gardens of the castle. Waiting for us there was Thunderhawk nine.
I raced to the side door of the Thunderhawk, prying it open, and holding it open for Ziliag who entered quickly. I stepped inside the dim cargo bay, shutting the door behind me, and taking a seat as the pilot leaning in the doorway to the cockpit shut the door. The engines roared to life, their promethium fuel jarring the whole ship as it began to elevate.
“So, Corvane, mind explaining what in the name of Holy Terra is so important that we abandon the defenses?” Ziliag asked, quite impatiently.
“Well, to be honest I’m not entirely sure my friend. Arithias informed me Dac’tyr wanted an audience with us, and far be it from me, and you especially, to deny the Captain his wishes.”
“I suppose you’re right … Still, I don’t have a good feeling about this Corvane. Ever since the Tyrannic wars I’ve had my doubts about the leadership of the Astartes … Dac’tyr is a good warrior, and a great leader, but I’m still wary of him ever since …“ Ziliag stopped short, catching himself. We don’t talk about what happened on Prandium.
“It’s alright brother, I accept your concerns, and although I know I cannot know of the hor--”
“Then don’t you dare speak, Corvane!” Ziliag pointed a finger at me accusingly, and shouted in a snarling tone. Ziliag’s red eyes raged for a moment, before they went much paler as he looked at his outstretched arm. He eyed it with accusation and mistrust, retracting it slowly as he gripped it with his free hand. “I … I’m … I-I just …“
“It’s okay, Ziliang, we shall speak of this no further.” I said intently. Ziliag remained silent the rest of the ride, wearing a somber expression. Within minutes we arrived back in the hangar bay of the strike cruiser.
“Alright, out ya go, I’ve got squads to move,” the pilot shooed us out through the Thunderhawk’s bay door. We hurried off of the gunship, as twenty tactical marines, loaded down with supplies boarded Thunderhawk nine.
“Let’s hurry, Ziliag,” I said urgently. He remained aloof, even as we dashed towards the lift. Perhaps I had overstepped my boundaries just a bit much this time. Slamming the upward button, the railings closed as we stepped on board. I removed my helmet, and clipped it to my belt, glancing at Ziliag who was beginning to regain his composure.
I took a deep breath, the lift zooming upwards, the gates opening quickly as we hit the top floor. We stepped out from the lift, making our way down a narrow hallway that led into a garden area with high, arched ceilings. Progressing through the place of meditation, we found ourselves at the foot of a door twice the size of a space marine, and four times as wide. Tapping an access panel quickly, the doors retracted slowly, their ancient mechanisms grinding away, the door slipping into the recesses of the ship.
Ziliag and I looked at each other for a moment, our expressions conveying the same feelings of suspicion as we entered. Stepping into the lavishly decorated bridge stunned us. Every piece of machinery was of the highest quality, rimmed with gold and the markings of the Emperor. A group of servitors shambled around, adjusting knobs and dials, while two tech marines attended the holo displays.
“Greetings Space Marines, we have been expecting you. The Captain is in his personal quarters. Please, follow me,” , a third tech marine advised. He gestured with the mandible-like arm attached to his power pack to the left. He started off, and we followed compliantly. Rounding a corner where a servitor was hard at work monitoring the Augurs, we came into view of a solid gold door adorned with the green emblem of the Salamanders Fourth Company.
The techmarine left us just when the doors to the private block abruptly forced themselves open, retracting sideways with haste. Inside, Dac’tyr sat upon his command seat, speaking with the most unexpected of men at his side.
Beside the Command Chair stood a Grey Knight. Instinctively, both Ziliag and I kneeled in an instant before such a prominent astartes, for it was believed by many that even Grey Knight troopers outranked even captains.
“Rise my brothers, for he is but a messenger. His name is Lucius Temperus, and he is not here at present. He has amplified the signal strength of his warp holo transmitter, and this is how he appears before us. He bears grim news,” spoke Dac’tyr solemnly. We returned to standing, bracing ourselves for the revelation.
“Corvane, Ziliag, I regret to inform you that the two Praetors Of Orpheus Companies Dac’tyr requested have been lost in a warp storm, along with half of the regiments that had joined with them. Currently three regiments of Cadian Shock troops remain en route, but as your captain has informed me, even then you cannot match the might of even two hive ships,” Lucius spoke firmly and without emotion.
“Pardon me sir, but why does any of this concern us?”, Ziliag inquired, narrowing his eyes.
“It doesn’t. Not you at least. But it does concern Corvane. I called you here with him knowing that he would need your assistance in his task,” the captain spoke authoritatively.
“And what would that be Dac’tyr?” , Ziliag asked, snarling ever so slightly.
“Your task, Corvane, is to assemble the six ponies you first encountered beside Princess Celestia. From what we’ve discussed, they possess an incomprehensible amount of psychic power. If we can determine a way to use it in the defense of the castle, we’ll be able to hopefully disable the synapse commanders, long enough for the Guard to arrive. Outside of that, we’re left with only one option … One I have feared I would be forced to enact … “ Dac’tyr trailed off. He rose from his seat, striding over to a small lift that could fit perhaps four marines. He gestured us to come aboard, and we obliged, but not before eyeing the Grey Knight. The Knight nodded, before he vanished, the holo transmitter signal fading.
Entering the cramped lift, Dac’tyr operated a holo panel, the lift jerking abruptly downward as we were consumed by darkness. Only the glowing red light of our eyes illuminated the darkness, along with our power armor’s glowing points. In silence, we descended until we stopped at a door aglow with red energy. Emblazoned on the adamantium door was the visage of a dragon, cloaked in silver.
I instantly knew why Dac’tyr had brought us here. The door responded to the captain’s touch, slowly revealing an expansive room as the door retracted upwards. Inside the room were weapons, relics of generations past. Thunder hammers, power swords, artificer armor, all were present, illuminated in the glow of bright floodlights. All but one item that is.
At the very end of the high ceilinged room, was an imposing figure, shrouded by darkness.
“I apologize for lying to you Corvane, and you especially Ziliag, but I have called Ziliag here for a great purpose as well. I could not divulge the true reason with a Grey Knight listening, for they would never condone this, even in such dire times. No, I have called you here to settle something once and for all,” Dac’tyr spoke sternly, but apologetically, striding toward the behemoth figure. Ziliag followed him, while I remained near the lift, observing the two respectfully.
“Ziliag, I cannot repair the irrevocable damage done to you during the Tyrannic wars, nor can I condone the actions made on Prandium. Some things cannot be altered, and for that, I am sorry. But what I can do is offer you the honor of becoming my chief advisor.”
Ziliag stared at Dac’tyr, with a mix of anguish and disbelief upon his face. Quickly composing himself he inhaled deeply, before letting out a great sigh.
“I accept, commander. And I thank you wholeheartedly for your apology,” said Ziliag in a gracious, yet troubled tone.
“Excellent. Your first task as my new advisor … “ Dac’tyr paused, the floodlight behind him bursting to life “is to provide me with the counsel on the activation of the Iron Dragon. To you, he is Brother Sokhar Bray’arth.”
Ziliag’s white hair draped across his face as he looked down in a brooding state. Then, suddenly, overcome with rage he struck out abruptly, bringing his fist mere inches from Dac’tyr’s face before abruptly stopping.
“How dare you show this to me? How dare you show me the one I couldn’t save? What gives you the right to torture me like this?” Ziliag exploded, scorning Dac’tyr.
“I understand you and Sokhar were very close Ziliag …”
“You’re damn right we were close! But that’s not the reason I don’t want to see him, not because of some petty fight everyone always assumes made us part ways. No, it wasn’t that at all. He was the one I couldn’t save. It’s all a big joke to you isn’t it Dac’tyr? Just toy with my emotions why don’t you! But you keep forgetting something Captain. Something, very important. Some us are still human. Sure we might be genetically enhanced to the point of post humanism, but I’ll be damned if I ever once considered relinquishing my humanity, and you know that!” said Ziliag, speaking frantically and passionately, his eyes raging with despair and pain of the memories.
“Ziliag … I didn’t--”
“Of course you didn’t mean to! Why would you cause me anguish intentionally? But that doesn’t change the fact of the matter. I can’t ever look at Sokhar again, for the shame is too great, and the bond shattered into too many pieces. Dac’tyr, with all due respect, I served under that man on Prandium, upon those blood soaked fields, and I didn’t, not even for a second, consider leaving him behind when he was injured by a ravener. My squad and I dragged him to safety, even as the planet collapsed …” Ziliag began to tear up, a rare, if not unheard-of occurrence among Space Marines.
“And then … when we were trapped on the moon of Ymgarl … fighting those wretched genestealers in those blasted tunnels, my men had to drag me away from him … I can still see the crashing of his thunder hammer upon those beasts to this day. The haunted look of the acceptance of his fate was too much to bear. And even as I kicked and screamed, my squad restraining me, I knew that I could’ve saved him, If I had only stayed. He would still walk among us … if not for my betrayal. If only I could’ve at least said I was sorry ...” Ziliag finally ended his rant, exhaling loudly, his eyes’ glowing visage dimming significantly, his fury subsiding. Dac’tyr remained silent, contemplating what Ziliag had said, before he looked up at the most Venerable Dreadnought.
“Well then, Ziliag, why don’t you tell him yourself,” Dac’tyr said, operating a small holo panel beside the dreadnought, as mechanicus wires plugged into the walker, before slinking out of the power sockets.
The dreadnought’s burning eyes were the first light to be seen upon the behemoth. Slowly but surely, the chassis powered up, it’s hunched over state straightening up, the servos whirring to life. Ziliag stood in a state of disbelief at the massive walker. From where I stood, the boom of the dreadnought’s ancient voice shook me through my armor.
“Greetings, Dac’tyr. Hello, old friend.” Sokhar said, rotating his head first to the captain, and then to Ziliag.
“Sokhar, I-I … I just wanted to say I was sorry for what happened on Ymgarl … It was all my fault …” Ziliag stammered, trying to find the right words.
“There is no need for apologies my friend. It was my decision to stay, if you had stayed, we would have both ended up dead , or nearly so. I did what the chapter expected of me, and no man, no xenos, not even the God-Emperor himself I dare say, will convince me otherwise. Lay your guilt to rest Ziliag, for there is none to be had with me,“ boomed Sokhar, with the same ancient voice Ziliag had told me of many times before.
“It’s not just that Bray’arth, it’s … I’ve been so selfish all these centuries. I’ve known that you survived Ymgarl ever since the rumors of a new Iron Dragon all those years ago began to circulate. I knew, in my heart, that there was none other more worthy of it than you. But in my blinding shame, I neglected you, refused to speak to you, for fear of being judged for my dishonorable actions … But most importantly, I couldn’t face you, because you were my friend Sokhar, you were my guide in a war torn world , and when that vanished, I was lost, broken for a long time … And for that I am sorry. I not only abandoned you on Ymgarl, but for all these centuries as well … “ Ziliag said passionately, trying to reconcile his actions.
“Ziliag, you didn’t abandoned me, you simply needed time to contemplate what happened on Ymgarl, which I might add, you could have done nothing to stop. Still, what you see as abandonment, I see as true brotherhood. People who abandon each other never come back Ziliag, and although it’s taken you all this time, you have returned, and that is all that matters. “ Sokhar said, peering down at Ziliag. He was right. Even after so much time had passed, their friendship had never faltered. If that isn’t devotion, nothing is.
“I-I … Thank you brother. You have eased my mind, if only for the time being. I can’t forget what I’ve done to you, and despite what you say, I will hold myself responsible for the misdeeds perpetrated. But the very fact that you have given me the benefit of the doubt, tells me it is time to begin to reforge our alliance. Whether I live or die, my sins shall know retribution, Sokhar …” Ziliag said, choking back emotion, and finishing his speech forcefully, unwavering in the statement.
“Ziliag, I understand you have always been stubborn, and so what I say now may not change your course of actions, but hear me, a time of great struggle is upon us, for I have been woken from my eternal slumber for more than just a reconciliation. And for now, we must put aside the past, leaving no trace of it behind us, if only for this one battle. So in the coming hours, there will be no betrayal, no loss, no misguided feelings of traitorous deeds. There will only be brotherhood, there will only be you and me, and the rest of your brothers against the galaxy. For on this day, we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, even as all hell bears down upon us, “ Sokhar boomed, approaching Ziliag slowly.
“You haven’t changed a bit my old friend, from the way you speak to me, to the way you were always head and shoulders above the rest … Alright, I’ll do it. It’s about time I lay my fears to rest, even if it is a bit late,” said Ziliag, his expression beginning to perk up.
“If there is one thing I have learned in this world, through all the destruction and death, it’s that it’s never too late. And I agree, you haven’t changed a bit either, you self - righteous buffoon,” Sokhar said jokingly, chuckling a bit as he did so. It was strangely frightening to hear a dreadnought laugh.
“Bah, this old face has got a few more scars than I would’ve liked, but still the same old Ziliag.”
“Right then, I hate cut you two short, but we need to get moving. Sokhar, Ziliag, I want both of you on the ground in 5, there’s a drop pod right underneath where Sokhar was just standing. It’ll be cramped for two, but I want the rest of the company to learn of your reawakening as soon as possible. As for you Corvane, as I explained I need you to rally the Elements of Harmony, and bring them to the Chaplain. Celestia offered to bring them, but I felt it would be beneficial if you gained their trust first. Although their leaders have put their fear of us killing them to rest, it isn’t exactly easy to see past our visage. And from what Celestia has told me, all-out war hasn’t plagued Equestria for quite some time. It is only reasonable to assume the inhabitants of this world still don’t trust or understand us, or our intentions fully. This is where you come in Corvane. I have watched you grow as a Space Marine, and above all, you have exhibited what I value most in a Salamander. Compassion, and empathy, make you no less of a warrior, if anything, they make you that much better as a protector of Mankind. This is why I have assigned you this task,” Dac’tyr said, turning to face me, whilst giving me a look of approval.
I didn’t know what to say, so I simply nodded humbly. Ziliag and Sokhar walked back onto the platform where the dreadnought has slumbered, as arches of metal rose from the floor. Walls were placed onto the framework of the arches by servo arms that dangled from the ceiling. The blow torches welding the piece together worked in unison, with an iridescent blue glow. In no time at all, the drop pod was lowered down by a lift into a small launch bay below, where the freshly constructed pod was prepped for insertion. The area where the drop pod had once been sealed itself with adamantium walls, leaving Dac’tyr and I alone in the hall of relics.
“One last thing before we go Corvane. I would like you to know that aboard this strike cruiser are enough Centurion Warsuits to equip half the company. As you know, they only come in two variations, and we have plenty of Devastator suits. This means that you, Ziliag, and every other Devastator marine will receive a suit. I understand you have only trained with these pieces of equipment, and have never field tested them. I get that, but in this time of need, we must use all the available resources at our disposal. The reason I’m telling you this is because the Princesses requested a personal bodyguard , and Devastators are perfectly suited to the role, “ Dac’tyr said, striding over to me before continuing.
“But that’s not the end of it Corvane. When we first dropped onto the planet, several marines were killed, and one of them was a devastator sergeant. You have only fought with us for a century, but in that short time, you have proven yourself worthy of promotion. Do you, Corvane Valorus, accept command of the First Devastator Squad of The Salamander’s Fourth Battle COmpany?”
I was speechless. I had always thought myself an outcast, my overly empathetic disposition a hindrance, and yet here I was, being offered the chance to lead my very own squad. I jumped at the offer.
“Yes sir, of course I accept. I would like nothing better than to serve the Chapter in a greater way. But I must confess sir, I’m not doing this for you.”
Dac’tyr tilted his head slightly, giving me a confused and suspicious look.
“I’m doing this for Equestria.”

42 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive, Element One: Magic
“So just like that, we managed to turn him back to stone. Well, he broke out eventually obviously, or rather we let him out. It’s complicated but, he’s got a good heart nonetheless,” said Twilight, answering my question regarding Discord. I shifted from where I sat. Twilight had decided to bring me out to a field, the gentle wind caressing my hard face. Twilight’s hair fluttered in the wind ever so slightly.
“Now I’ve got a question for you. Well, a couple actually. First of all, why did you decide to come here in the first place? And moreover, why did you not just … kill us when you first encountered us at my castle?” said Twilight, flinching at the world kill. Dac’tyr wasn’t joking when he said war was not a big thing here. I mulled over the answer for a moment before replying.
“Twilight, I don’t mean to frighten you, but I feel you should know something about me, and the rest of the creatures like me. I am a human, as I mentioned earlier when I first came to speak to you, but I am more than that. The others like me are Space Marines, genetically enhanced soldiers of mankind.” I said. She still had a confused look on her face, searching for something to compare me to.
“Imagine this Twilight, picture your planet. Now picture dozens of others, just like it, and some others, more dangerous and unforgiving. Now maintain that picture, and multiply it by a billion. Now imagine that every single planet was home to a race of creatures, each one bent on the destruction of one another, all for the sake of conquest and personal gain. That is the galaxy we are unfortunate enough to live in. That is why I exist. I exist to defend the Empire of Mankind ...”
Twilight’s cheeks lost their color that was visible even through her fur. She shook slightly, contemplating the dreadful thought. I quickly scooted over to her, and with a bit of consideration, wrapped my arm gently around her midsection, hugging her close.
“But it’s alright Twilight, because you don’t have to worry. You don’t have to be fearful of anything. We are here to defend you. And I am here to comfort you. In this galaxy, no being can stand alone, so for now, like it or not, we stand together, ”
Twilight was shocked by my actions, half expecting me to crush her when I embraced her. But she quickly regained her composure, and snuggled into my chestplate. Her color returned as she embraced me back wrapping her hooves around my arm.
“I was created to defend Mankind, but that does not mean I won’t defend you with the same zeal.”
Twilight raised her head from my chestplate, looking up at me with eyes of innocence. She was so young, so naive to the dangers of the galaxy around her, as was her species as a whole. In that moment, as her starry eyes full of wonder looked back into my own dreadful visage, I made a decision. The contrast of such an innocent being against a man tempered by war and pain almost looked comical. But we shared an understanding of each other. On a base level, we knew it was us against a hostile universe.
That day , an important event took place, for Mankind gained an ally, and I gained a friend.
36 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive, Element Two: Honesty
Applejack reared back, her hind legs rippling with finely toned muscles as she released them, sending shockwaves through the tree, a shower of apples raining down from it.
“That, is how ya do it! Top that big fella,” Applejack giggled slightly, unafraid of my hulking form and ebon face. I admired the way she carried herself, very confident in whatever she did. Even when I had first approached her, she welcomed me in as if she knew me like family. These ponies were trusting creatures, a bit too trusting in fact. Their naivete made me smile, if ever so slightly, for I had read of ancient times on Terra, so old in fact, parts of the Librarium were in awe of the scripts’ age. Back then, humans weren’t so different from these creatures. We still warred with each other back then of course, but what we had was much closer to what these ponies have here, in terms of trust.
I stood up from where I had lain against a particularly stout apple tree, walking slowly over to a tree beside Applejack’s own. I looked it up and down for a moment, before setting my sights on one spot of it. I raised my right leg up high, before forcing it forward in a display of immense power. The resulting force from the kick shattered the trunk of the tree as it crumpled in two, toppling over, uprooted.
“Whoo wee! Why, sugarcube, I have never seen anypony kick that hard. Even Big Mac couldn’t do that! That was truly impressive, but regardless, you owe me an apple tree,” Applejack said, chuckling heartily and gesturing for me to follow her. I complied, falling in behind her as we walked back through the orchard.
“So, Applejack, what do you think of me? As a being, how do you perceive me? I know its a very sudden question, but please, just answer it,”
Applejack halted herself, turning to face me, a thoughtful look on her face as she peered up at me.
“Well, that’s a very deep question now ain’t it Corvane. Ah’ll be honest, I was expecting you and the rest of your team to blow us away as soon as you saw us. But you didn’t, and that surprised me. I’ve heard tales of wars, waaaay out on the Equestrian borders, hundreds of miles from any civilian town. I’ve seen antique suits of armor before, and huge ponies wearing the armor, just to demonstrate. But Ah’ve never seen anypony like you. You walk on two legs, you wear armor at all times, and your eyes are red for pete’s sake. Ah would be telling a lie if Ah said I wasn’t afraid of you …”
I looked down at the ground, a bit angry at myself for my warlike appearance.
“But that don’t mean I don’t trust you. Quite the opposite in fact. Now, what I’m about to say may seem crazy, but I trust you more than anypony I’ve ever met. Even mah friends. I’ve never come into a situation like I did a few days ago, knowing that the pon-- err, Ah mean people standing before me could’ve just snuffed me out like that. But you didn’t. You could’ve, surely if you wanted to, but it takes a real big man to help those who can do nothing to help them. In mah eyes, there is no greater test of merit.”
I hadn’t considered what she had just told me. We could’ve tried to just destroy the planet, futile as it may have been, but we could’ve. But instead, we chose to put our lives on the line on some random frontier world home to talking ponies. It was lunacy, surely, if not for the fact that by doing so we were stopping a Tyranid fleet from reforming.
But it was more than that, at least to me. It was about protecting such an innocent race of beings, who meant no harm to anyone.In a lot of ways, they reminded me of the Tau. An Upstart go get em’ kind of civilization was brewing here, and I would not stand to let the flames of a promising race to be extinguished by the vile ‘nids.
“Thank you, Applejack. That’s all the answer I needed … “
30 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive, Element Three: Generosity
“Darling, I must ask, what in the name of Celestia compelled you to choose such a hideous color for your apparel?” asked Rarity, politely sipping at her tea.
“Well, it’s not as simple as just choosing. I was born on Nocturne, the homeworld and recruiting world of the Salamanders chapter of space marines. All space marines of the same chapter wear the same colors to show their loyalty to the chapter master, and to distinguish one group from another. Think of our armor much the same as the Royal Guard of Celestia. They all wear similar armor to ensure others know they’re a group.”
“I see … while I don’t approve of your... Chapter, was it? Your chapter’s color scheme, it certainly makes sense.” replied Rarity.
I strode over across the boutique, skimming over the variety of clothes stored in closets and shelves. Many of the clothes seemed silly, almost juvenile in nature, but others were simply beautiful. I always will see war as a necessary evil, but even so, after witnessing so much death, so much destruction and horror, the beauty that shone here was only amplified.
I was never big on fashion, even before I became a neophyte, and indeed, it was not really a concern for most marines, but something inside me told me this pony had a talent. A talent that might be useful.
“Rarity?”
“Yes, dear?”
“I have something to ask of you. Something very, very important. You don’t have to accept, and I don’t expect you will. But I need a favor,” I said, trying to sound innocent.
“Whatever you require, I will assist in whatever way I can Corvane. We only met a few hours ago, and at first, it was quite odd having somepony of your … stature around. But It really is true what they say, don’t judge a book by its cover,” Rarity said, eliciting a small chuckle.
“Alright, I would appreciate if you assisted in the making of nanoweave suits for as many ponies as possible. Right now our Tech-Marines and several of the more tech savvy tactical marines are shaping leftover carapace plates into armor for the Royal Guard. They’re woefully understaffed, and have been concentrating their efforts on modifying gear for use by ponies. However, there isn’t enough carapace armor to go around. That’s where you come in. From talking with you, you’ve shown me you’re a master seamstress, and while I understand your strength lies in fashion, war looms on the horizon.”, I said glancing over to Rarity who listened attentively, sipping at her tea.
“We are not yet ready for the coming storm. Flakweave is a type of ultra tough fabric that we’ve got a few reserve stores of. Servitors and tech priests are hard at work cutting them into suitable form for ponies, but I feel you could assist them greatly with the use of your magic and expert knowledge on the pony form. You know, show them how it’s done, so to speak.”
The unicorn set her teacup down for a moment, lost in thought, and looking more than just a bit frightened at the prospect of war. When she looked back up at me, with those same gleaming eyes Twilight had, full of hope and determination, she had made her choice.
“I’ll do it.”
“Excellent, I’ll radio for a Thunderhawk to come pick us up. When it gets here, I’ll escort you to it. My friend Arithias will be waiting for you inside. He’s a bit imposing, but you don’t need to make friends with him, just let him show you where you can get started,” I said, mulling over my next thought before blurting it out. “And Rarity, if you ever feel uncomfortable, or scared, or out of place, just tell someone, and I’ll be up there in an instant. “
“Thank you dear. Now then, before we go, let’s finish our tea.”
“Wouldn’t have it any other way,” I said, raising the small cup delicately to my mouth, and drinking the whole thing in a quick gulp. I wasn’t the most keen on etiquette, but I politely set the cup down on the coffee table after I finished. I sat down on the floor, observing Rarity as she finished her tea, and we got lost in more pointless chatter.
But there was something about these ponies. Something strange. They seemed so innocent, and they were, yet they were so brave, in the face of an enemy even the Imperium Of Man feared. It amazed me, to the lengths people, and ponies, will go to survive.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
24 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive , Element Four : Loyalty
“Is that the best you can do slowpoke? Hah, keep up ya big lug!” Rainbow Dash said, soaring above me. Damn that pony and her wings. She elegantly raced above me, doing twirly spins and just being a showoff in general. FInally, as I approached the finish line, I saw Dash standing there, leaning against one of the wooden posts on two legs, with her front legs crossed like arms.
“Took ya long enough. If I had to say, you’re about as fast as ol’ Tank without his flying gear,” Rainbow giggled playfully as I slowed to a halt, digging my feet into the ground to stop my momentum.
“Ah, that’s cheating Rainbow, you’ve got wings.”
“And you’ve got genetic doo-dads!”
“This armor weighs a lots you know! It’s not like I can just run like I would be able to without it on. Hmmm … alright, let’s do something a little more my level,” I said, smiling evilly. I strode over to a nearby tree with a particularly large base. I drew my combat knife, and kneeling down, I sliced through the base of the tree. The top crumpled with a huge thud, crashing down in a mess of branches and leaves. I sat down on one end of the stump, putting my arm on top of the makeshift table. I gestured Dash over with my free hand. She sighed while shaking her head playfully and giggling.
“Here, we’ll do an arm wrestle. You versus me, and I’ll go easy on you, I’ll only use my pinky,” I encouraged.
“No! Don’t hold back, I can totally beat the tar out of you when it comes to arm wrestles!” Rainbow replied, looking for a challenge. I sighed before rising from my spot, and walking over to a fresh tree.
“Look at this tree, Rainbow Dash. Now imagine it’s your arm. Now look at my fist, and imagine it’s my fist. Now, watch closely, or you might miss it,” I mocked, taking a step back with my right foot, my arm pulling back. I released the punch with a forceful explosion of power, the tree splintering into a thousand pieces, the trunk collapsing in a heap of broken wood.
I stepped back, making a gun with my hand, and blowing on it before pretending to holster it. Dash looked more than a little surprised, her mouth hanging slightly agape.
“You … You just ...”
“Exploded that tree? Yes. Yes I did,”
“I don’t wanna arm wrestle anymore … For your safety of course! We don’t want anypony to get hurt,” Dash quickly completed her sentence, adding that slight bit of arrogant confidence that made her so lovable.
“I’ve actually got a question for you Corvane, and, this is gonna sound kinda personal, so don’t take it the wrong way, but … Well, I was wondering If you could … uhm, get me some of those genetic thingies … maybe … ?” Rainbow Dash asked, shrinking into her skin, and becoming shyer than she normally was. I let out a raucous laugh, looking at her with the memories of the implants cemented into my mind. With my laughing, her cheeks exploded into vibrant, pinkish red.
I stopped laughing as she gave me a scolding look. I had explained to her earlier who I am, and what I was, just as I had with the previous ponies, but I hadn’t really gone that in depth with any of them. I tried to find a way to put it gently. I failed.
“Well, Dash, I honestly don’t know if you can even get them. They were designed with males in mind, and humans more specifically. A female pony? It most certainly would fail, at least with the current processes.“
The pony looked down into the ground, searching for something to say, her mane draping over her face. She tried to blow the mane out of her face, but gave up the effort when it kept falling back down. She kicked the dirt, sighing loudly. I came closer to her, kneeling down to bring my face closer to hers. I used my index finger, outstretched in a loose fist, to perk her head up, forcing her to look at me.
“Rainbow, I won’t lie to you, being a Space Marine is more than just being strong. It’s about sacrificing your life for those around you. Now I know you just want the genetic ‘doo-dads’ so you can show off and be stronger and faster, and I get that. I really do. But you have to understand something. I’m dead.”
Rainbow’s eyes pierced my soul. Even a brash, arrogant knucklehead like her was heart-wrenchingly cute.
“I am dead, because I gave my life up a long time ago, to serve the Emperor, and to serve Mankind. And for the time being, I serve Celestia, and Luna, and Twilight, and all the other ponies of this world, including, you.” I said comfortingly. I used my free hand to lightly push my free index finger into her chest. I stepped back from her, rising to my full height. She remained in a glum state, despite my speech.
I contemplated a thought that gnawed at me at the back of my mind. I decided to go ahead with the brash thought.
“Look, Dash, I can’t promise you anything, but … I could try and get you a little something from the armory. I was thinking, since you want to be stronger and faster, I could talk to the apothecary, and ask him to rig up some exoskeletal bionics on you. It would require surgery, but once this is all over, he would be able to remove the machinery, allowing you to return to normal. Now I know thi- “
“Yes! Yes, yes, yes! Hook me up with those bionics Corvane! Please!” Rainbow begged, drawing out the last word, instantly perking up. I stared into her eyes for a moment. That same mixture of innocence and bravery these ponies continued to confuddle me.
“Alright, alright, let’s go get you fitted right away. Just let me do the talking, and everything will go fine. Just, don’t talk please, the Apothecary isn’t too privy to helping xenos … “ I said, putting on my helmet, and radioing for Thunderhawk seven to come and pick us up at the coordinates I sent him.
The meadow by the Everfree forest dash and I had come to was stunningly serene. It was the first time I realized, despite having many thoughts about the concept, that this planet was fully untouched by the plagues of the universe. Here there was no corruption. No seeds of heresy. No genocidal xeno incursions - well until now that is - for this place was wholly contained, in it’s own orb of ignorance to the galaxy around it.
I pondered for a moment, standing in the meadow, Rainbow jabbering on about how awesome her enhancements would be, about what the repercussions of the first interplanetary war on Equestria would bring. I felt it would rob this planet of innocence, of its blissful state of being. I began to get choked up in that meadow, knowing the consequences that awaited this planet. I know the ravages of war, especially those perpetrated by the Tyranids.
And I knew this planet wasn’t ready for that time yet.
18 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive, Element Five : Laughter
Never before have I experienced someone with so much energy. If I could bottle that ceaseless bouncing of hers, it could power an Imperial Titan for centuries to come. She was so joyful, so carefree, so … blissful.
I wandered around the downstairs floor of Sugar Cube Corner, observing sweet treats of all size and shapes. There was everything from cakes to muffins to cupcakes to eclairs to ice cream and mousse. All thing Space Marines indulged very, very sparingly.
I felt at home here for some reason. It didn’t resemble the death world of Nocturne, nor the Battle Barge’s which I had spent many a night aboard. It resembled what I had always pictured happiness to be. For in this small, cramped dwelling lived a pony, who despite what may come, was forever happy. And that made me jealous, and yet at the same time, sorry for her.
I was sorry that her times of fun were nearly at end. I was sorry that it had come to this. I was sorry that there was no other way but to fight. I haven’t felt true sorrow since my days as a neophyte, and that just made it all the harder to bear the thought of this place, and what it was destined to become. Just another war-torn, ruined world.
Yet something inside me began to grow, as I sat there, watching Pinkie Pie bounce happily about hanging balloons, and streamers, and banners. Something I knew would forever remain with me, as long as I lived. That something was happiness.
Pinkie Pie, for all her illusions of being a simple party planner, was wise beyond her age, for she understood the true meaning of life. She understood, perhaps without even knowing herself, as oxymoronical as it may sound, that life is worth enjoying. That’s something I hadn’t understood for a long time.
Still, when we first met, it was if the pieces of a puzzle had come together, for I held the knowledge that life is worth fighting for, and she held the reason why it was worth fighting for. I may have never known, had I not met her. I understood I fought for the people of the Imperium, but in that moment, I finally understood why I fought. While I may not ever experience true, lasting happiness, I can rest easy in the fact that for every battle I win, for every enemy I slay, a life is saved.
A life, with the potential of happiness, is worth more than every Space Marine. That’s, what makes fighting this endless war, worth it in the end.
“Come on silly billy! I just got the ‘Big Stompy Robots Welcoming Party’ banner up!”
“Pinkie, I’ve told you, I’m not a robot! It’s just armor. Underneath, I’m made of the same stuff you are, more or less … “
“Oh shush! I don’t care what you are, to me, you’re a big stompy robot.” Pinkie giggled. She hopped over to me bouncing up and down, but on her third bounce, she seemed to float in the air, suspended by nothing more than what I can assume is sheer force of will. She lightly pushed her hoof against my nose.
“You’ve been booped. It doesn’t matter that you’re a big stompy robot , all that matters is you’re MY big stompy robot. Come to think of it, I’ve always wanted to have a big stompy robot, ever since just now! “ Pinkie said with exuberance, before descending back to the ground.
All of a sudden, Pinkie whipped out a cannon nearly her size, and with a quick pull, the end of the cannon expelled confetti and streamers, along with several inflated balloons. How it all fit in there, I decided not to question. As she chattered away, asking me questions in long winded and energetic sentences, I blotted out her voice for a second, as I remembered something.
The vanquisher cannon. We had only one of them onboard the strike cruiser, in a pre-fabbed, ready to deploy state. But with the tech marines manning various vehicles, the servitors defending the armory aboard the cruiser, and 60 marines in warsuits that left only a meagre 55 tactical marines. There was no doubt that at least 30 of them would be manning vehicles, with the tech marine teams spread thin. The remaining 20 marines would be divides into two squads, one accompanying the Captain, and another stationed in drop pods, ready to deep strike.
That left no one to man the Vanquisher cannon, for it was too complex for servitors to handle, and the rest of the marine force was tied up. I had once heard a tech-marine say to another, that the Vanquisher cannon was a simple, user friendly interface. It was still far too complex for the braindead servitors to operate however.
I had considered asking a royal guard of Celestia’s to man the gun, but every single one of the extremely small guard was relegated to the defense of the castle. Even so, I found Pinkie Pie a perfect gunner for the turret for two reasons. One , she would remain protected inside the cannon’s armored hull, and two she would be able to safely assist in the defense of the planet, while keeping morale up.
It was a longshot for sure, but the cannon she used had reminded me of the Vanquisher turret stowed away, useless without an operator. So I took the chance. I grabbed Pinkie Pie by the shoulders, stopping her bouncing for a few moments as we stared at each other.
We spoke rapidly, the conversation shooting back and forth between us. I decided to lead with a joke of sorts.
“Ever man a general defense Vanquisher Turret?”
“Never even heard of it.”
“Think you’d be able to learn an advanced interface within twelve hours?”
“Probably not.”
“You in?”
“Absolutely!”
Like music to my ears.
12 Hours Until Tyranid Hive Ships Arrive, Element Six: Kindness
“Fluttershy? Hello? Is anyone home?” , I asked, trying to knock gently enough on the door as to not break it. I circled around the house for a fifth time, trying to peer inside. I spied a window near the back of the cottage that was small and circular. I hadn’t noticed it before, but I quickly rushed over, peering inside. What I saw made my heart sink.
I had never gotten to meet Fluttershy, but her friends had spoken of her fondly, as a soft spoken, gentle creature. They had said she was a caretaker of animals, devoted to the kindness of all beings.
I punched through the wall, rending the walls apart, and forcing myself through into the dark room.
“Fluttershy?”
No response.
I eyed a pony, laying on a couch, her back turned to me. Her wings were slightly outstretched, curling ever so slightly as if in a state of - no. It wasn’t possible. I refused to believe it.
“Fluttershy?” I called out, more forcefully this time. I slowly approached, and I began to notice a small object that was wriggling by her side. It was a rabbit, no bigger than a finger on my gauntlets. It nudged her continuously, trying to wake her. It’s eyes were close, and I could hear its high pitched whimpering.
As I came closer and closer to the body, allowing myself a better view, I found a note on a table beside the couch. I refused to touch it.
Finally, with one last step, I towered over Fluttershy, her wings locked in a state of rigor mortis. I rolled her over onto her back, and blank, lifeless eyes stared back at me. I dropped my head to the floor, shutting my eyes. A million thoughts raced through my mind, and I made a decision.
I approached the table, still in darkness, and grasped the small note gently. I unfurled the yellow tinted scroll, bound with a piece of pink ribbon. I read it over in a matter of seconds, for it was only a few sentences. I read it aloud to myself.
“When there’s nothing to look for in life… What do you do? Do you just bear it? Do you sit through the thoughts of knowing the death that’s coming? No.”
I put the scroll back down onto the table, grasping the ribbon in my hand, and looking down at it intently. It was a delicate piece of silk, colored a soft pink. I tied it around the paper of one of the purity seal on the front of my left pauldron.
She will be missed, not forgotten.
I started towards the hole in the wall I had made, preparing to bear the grim news of this tragedy to Celestia, when a sunbeam streak past me. A cage had dropped from the ceiling, letting a tiny sliver of light stream in. I turned to see where it lead, and was sure it was a sign.
The beam of light shone directly onto the flank of Fluttershy, right where her cutie mark was. The three butterflies seemed to gain an otherworldly glow to them in the darkness of the room. I knew there was hope.
I dashed over to Fluttershy, securing my helmet, and holding down the vox button. I scooped Fluttershy up with my free arm, before barreling straight back through the entrance I had made.
“This is Corvane! I need the closest Thunderhawk gunship to come pick me up at my current coordinates. I repeat, I need transport, IMMEDIATELY!” I hollered into the vox, clutching a flare from my belt as I ended the transmission. I popped the cap, the red smoke and glow of it beginning to start. I tossed it in the field in front of the cottage. Running rapidly towards the location of the flare, I knelt down, placing Fluttershy gently before me.
“Its going to be fine … It’s all going to be fine, just hang in there …” I said as I tried to comfort the unmoving body.
Even as the engines of the Thunderhawk screeched overhead, preparing to land, I heard nothing but the sound of my own comforting words. I knew her chances were slim, and without the final element of harmony, so were Equestria’s.
