Whipping Digi
Chapter 2
Previous ChapterNext ChapterDigi woke up dazed and confused with a splitting headache. When his eyes adjusted to the light he saw that he was in a hospital room. He looked around and saw somepony that was in a full body cast with only their eyes visible.
He met eyes with them for a moment and gave a smug grin, “How’s it going?”
A disgruntled groan was the only reply he got. He chuckled and was instantly rewarded with a shot of pain to his brain. “Dammit!”
Just as he said that, Vinyl and Octavia walked in with Bon Bon and that creature he saw earlier. “I thought I heard you wake up.” Octavia said.
Vinyl just took one look and laughed. “Forget you’re a unicorn again?”
“That was one time and I was wasted.” Digi replied. “But enough about me. It’s good to see you again Bon Bon.”
“Same here. Octavia tol-” She was interrupted by the bipedal creature.
“Aren’t you gonna say hi to me?” It asked.
“I’m sorry but I don’t know who or what you are.” Digi said.
“It’s me, Lyra!” It replied.
“Lyra!? What happened to you!?”
She gave a smug smirk, “Turns out I came from another dimension when I was a baby and I wasn’t a pony at all. Aaand…” She bent down and looked at Bon Bon who continued to look forward with an irritated look on her face. “I was right!”
“Ugh! Would you just drop it already?” Bon Bon said.
Lyra waved her hands in front of Bon Bon’s face. “It’s hard to drop things with these.”
“Well, I can’t say I’m surprised.” Digi said. “You were always somewhat like an alien to me.”
Vinyl laughed, “That’s an understatement.”
Octavia elbowed her in the side. “Be nice.”
“What? I’m just saying.” She replied.
Digi got out of the bed; his headache didn’t impede him as much as it had earlier.
“Are you sure you’re okay to be up? You hit your head pretty hard.” Octavia said.
“I’m fine. You two should get back home before the guys destroy it.” He said.
“Alright, we’ll see you later.” She said before walking out the door.
“Later!” Vinyl said before following Octavia.
“Why did you really jump out the window?” Bon Bon asked.
“I just forgot I was on the second floor.” He said back.
“And?” Lyra asked?
“That’s it.”
They both raised skeptical eyebrows almost simultaneously.
“Really.”
Bon Bon sighed. “Whatever you say. Let’s go get you checked out.”
Lyra and Bon Bon turned and walked out the door with Digi behind them. When he got to the door he turned back to his roommate, “You shouldn’t have to worry about breaking anymore bones with that body armor.”
After checking out of the hospital Lyra and Bon Bon were walking Digi back to Vinyl and Octavia’s house. They were reminiscing about the university days and chatting about what they were doing now.
“You’ve come so far from being the mean girl of college, Lyra.” Digi said. “I mean, you’re practically an inter-dimensional diplomat now. That just blows my mind!”
“I’m nothing special,” Lyra said slightly blushing, “I’m just a girl that had some bad luck as a baby.”
“Horse apples! You’re doing so much for both worlds.” Bon Bon said. “We’ve gotten inter-dimensional cell phone towers here because of you.”
As if on cue Lyra’s phone started ringing. She looked at it then answered, “Hey Vinyl! What’s up? Yeah… We’re just walking around town… Oh really? All right, we’ll be there. Later.”
“What was that?” Digi asked.
“Vinyl and Octavia want us to meet them at Sugar Cube Corner for lunch.” Lyra said.
“Sounds like fun.”
With that, they proceeded to Sugar Cube Corner for their impromptu lunch.
When they arrived they found that Vinyl and Octavia had beaten them there along with Mic, Lulz, Tombstone, and Toaster. The group was larger than expected when Lyra, Bon Bon, and Digi arrived that Mrs. Cake had to push two tables together. But, once everything was settled they made light conversation while they waited for their food.
“Did you think you were a pegasus?” Lulz asked with a smirk.
“No, not since college.” Digi replied. “I was just tired and forgot I was on the second floor.”
“Well, it looks like you got a well needed nap.” Tombstone said.
“Yeah,” Digi said rubbing the back of his head with a hoof, “I needed it.”
Lyra and Bon Bon shared a look then focused it at Digi. He glanced at them, ‘Damn, they always could read me.’ He thought.
“Well,” Octavia said, “All joking aside. We should discuss the tour.”
“Where are you all gonna be performing?” Bon Bon asked.
“We kick off the tour here.” Octavia said, “Next is Fillydelphia, then Manehattan, Las Pegasus, Stalliongrad, Hoofington, Trottingham, Baltimare, Canterlot, and finish out in the Crystal Empire.”
“Looks like we’ve got our work ahead of us.” Toaster said.
“Exactly, that’s why we need to get things lined out.” Octavia said. “I’ve taken the liberty of arranging our hotel rooms for the first half. But we mustn’t forget AcousticBrony, MandoPony, and PrinceWhatever will be joining us when we get to Las Pegasus.”
“Aww yeah!” Vinyl exclaimed. “Those guys rock!”
“Wait, I wasn’t told about this.” Digi said. “Does the line up change with them added?”
“Yes,” Octavia replied, “But only slightly. You’re still going to be going on first, followed by PrinceWhateverer, then AcousticBrony and MandoPony are going on together, and after that it goes back to normal.”
Just then, Mr. and Mrs. Cake arrived with their food. A daffodil sandwich for Bon Bon, a garden salad for Lyra, large cheese pizza for Mic, Lulz, Tombstone, and Toaster, a rose bowl for Octavia, sunflower soup for Vinyl, and an oat burger and season hay fries for Digi.
Not much was said for a while as they enjoyed their food. That is, until a certain purple alicorn trotted by and got Digi’s full attention. He almost choked when she looked in their direction. Big beautiful violet eyes were looking at him with concern. He finally got control of his coughing and she turned around and trotted off. He was still lost in his own world staring at her flanks he didn’t notice everypony at the table following his gaze. When they saw what he was looking at they all burst in to laughter. That got Digi out of his stupor.
“I think I know why he jumped out the window.” Vinyl laughed.
Digi was blushing immensely and looked away.
“You should have told me. I would have introduced you to her.” Bon Bon said.
“Wait, you know her?” He asked.
“She’s an acquaintance of sorts. She comes into Sugar Cube Corner often with her friends.” She replied.
“What’s her name?”
“Dude, that’s Princess Twilight Sparkle.” Mic said.
“Princess?”
“Yeah, she’s been a princess a little over a year.” Toaster said.
“Well, where’s her castle at?”
Vinyl laughed, “She doesn’t have a castle. She lives above the library.”
“Are you going to go talk to her?” Lulz asked.
“I’m thinking about it.” Digi said.
“For your sake, I hope you do.” Octavia said. “We can’t be having you jump out anymore windows.”
“Don’t worry about me, guys. I’ll be fine. It’s just a little crush.”
And with that everypony continued eating and discussing the tour but most of the time was spent trying to give Digi advice on how he should go about talking to Twilight. Most of it was cheesy pick up lines but there were some solid advice thrown in. Such as ‘discuss literature or magic’ and ‘talk about her more than yourself’. Needless to say, Digi had a full schedule ahead of him that afternoon.
After lunch was finished he went straight to Golden Oak Library to officially meet Twilight.
He paced back and forth outside for a while thinking of what to say and to somewhat gain courage. ‘Damn, this shouldn’t be so hard.’ He thought. ‘I used to talk to girls all the time in college. Hell, my best friends are girls. I should know how to do this.’ He stomped his forehooves in frustration. “Why is this so hard!?”
“Why is what hard?”
He whirled around to see who was behind him. It was a small purple and green dragon carrying a stack of scrolls.
“Oh, um… I was just… That is, I was…” He groaned in exasperation. “Do you work here?”
“You could say that.” The dragon said. “I live here.”
“Oh, I didn’t realize more than one person lived here. Then you know Twilight Sparkle right?”
“Of course! I’m her number one assistant!” He said boastfully. “Name’s Spike.”
“I’m Digital Whiplash but everypony calls me Digi.”
“Nice to meet you.” Spike said. “Now, what did you want with Twilight?”
“Well…” Digi scraped a forehoof on the ground. “I just wanted to talk to her.” He said with a slight blush.
“She’s in there,” Spike said pointing a claw at the door, “But I wouldn’t bother her. She’s reshelfing the books and she likes to have zero distractions when she’s doing so.”
“It’ll be real quick. If that’s okay.”
“I’m not stopping you. Just watch out for flying books.”
“Can do.” Digi said as he confidently trotted up to the door. “Nice talking to you.”
“Same here.” Spike said as he walked off.
Digi stood in front of the door for a moment longer, and then he finally pushed it open only to be greeted by a hardback book to the side of the head.
“Ugh!” He grunted. “That kind of hurt.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry!” Twilight said as she stopping what she was doing to see if he was all right. “I didn’t see you there. Are you okay?”
Digi opened his eyes and was immediately cast into a sea of violet euphoria. “I-I’m o-okay.” He stammered. “It’s fine, you were in the zone. I can recall a time or two I was focused on one thing.” He blushed.
“Are you sure? That was a pretty thick book.”
“Yeah, it’s cool.”
“If you say so. Well then, is there anything I can help you with?” She asked with a small, cute smile.
“Um… I-I just wanted to check out the library while I was in town. I’m a big literary buff.”
“That’s good to hear. Reading is an excellent way to gain knowledge. And you know what they say ‘knowledge is power’.” She smiled even brighter. I’m actually in the middle of reshelving, but is there any particular genre you’re looking for?”
“I was just gonna browse but if you need any help I’d be happy to lend a hoof.”
“I couldn’t possibly ask that of you.”
“It’s no problem. I didn’t have any plans this afternoon anyway.”
“Well if you insist. I might be able to use a little help.”
“Great!” Digi said as he levitated a group of books up and examined them to determine were they should go.
Twilight was a little hesitant to accept his help since she didn’t know him, but she reminded herself that a good way to the beginning of a friendship is to accept a generous offer.
“So,” She started, “You said you were new to town?”
“Yeah,” Digi replied, “I’m staying here with Vinyl Scratch and Octavia getting ready to go on tour.”
“You’re a musician?”
“Yep.”
“Oh really? I wouldn’t have guessed that.”
“Why’s that?”
“Well, you’re cutie mark doesn’t look like a musicians.”
Digi turned to look at the binary code on his flank.
“It looks more like it belongs on a computer programmer.”
“Well, I am sort of.” Digi said.
“What do you mean?” Twilight asked while telekinetically grabbing the books, that Digi had been levitating since he began, and put them into place.
Digi looked sheepish when she gave him a coy look. “I’m an electronic musician. My specialties being: glitch-hop, chiptunes, and complextro house. And all of those sub genres focus heavily on programming.”
“That makes sense. And it also makes since that an electronic musician would be going on tour with Vinyl Scratch.”
“Well, Vinyl, Octavia, and I have been friends since we met at Manehattan University. We’ve always wanted to go on tour together but I was slow on making music.”
“I had no idea they went to MU.” She said happily surprised. “Do you know Professor Psych?”
“Know him?” Digi laughed. “By graduation that guy knew us better than he knew himself. Hell, he was the one that convinced Vinyl to get with Tavi. And don’t even get me started on him and Lyra. Him and that mare had some bad chemistry. Hoo!”
“It sounds like you have a lot of fond memories of your younger days.”
“Oh yeah, but I’m sure you do too.”
“Not really. I mostly kept to myself constantly studying.” She said still shelving book after book. “I didn’t really get an exciting streak until I came to Ponyville a couple of years ago.”
“I can tell.” He said looking at her wings.
Twilight blushed slightly and continued shelving books.
A few hours passed as they talked and Twilight shelved the books. By then Digi had given up trying to put the books in the right places and started reading a Daring Do book and Twilight was just about done shelving all of them.
She magically levitated the book that Digi was reading into the spot it went. Then she approached him with a sour look on her face. “Did you really come to look through the books?”
Digi looked away and said, “Of course I did. Why else would I come to a library?”
Twilight raised an eyebrow that made Digi blush. He sighed in defeat, “No… I actually came here to talk to you.”
“Me? Whatever for?”
“Well, I saw you when I got here and I thought you were really pretty and I wanted to get to know you better.”
Twilight slightly blushed. “You think I’m pretty?”
“Of course. Who wouldn’t?”
“That’s sweet of you to say, Digital.”
“You can call me Digi.”
Twilight smiled, “Okay then, Digi.”
They were both silent for a moment looking in different directions until Digi finally spoke up. “Um… I was wondering… That is, if it’s okay with you… Maybe we could hang out sometime soon?”
Twilight, who was still blushing and looking at the floor said, “I might be able to schedule something.”
“That’s gre-” Digi started but was interrupted by his phone ringing.
He levitated his phone out of his mane and answered, “Hello?”
A drunk Vinyl Scratch then deafened him. “DIGI!!” She screamed happily.
“Vinyl!” Digi yelled back irritated. “What’s your problem?”
“Did you nail her?” She slurred out.
“Why would you even ask that?”
“Oh, don’t be such a frumple butt.”
He sighed, “What do you want?”
“Pull your head out of your marefriend’s ass and get your flank back here and drink with me like old times!”
“She’s not my marefriend.” He hissed quietly in the phone.
“Whaaaateveeeerrrr!! Just get over here before Tavi puts me in time out.” And with that, she hung up.
Digi sighed. “Look, I gotta go. But name the time and place and I’ll be there.”
“Okay, will do.” She said.
“Later.” He began to canter to the door.
“Wait.” Twilight called out.
Digi turned around and was met with a kiss on his cheek. He blushed bright red and stood there with his mouth open until he finally got feeling back in his legs and galloped as fast as he could out the door and down the dark Ponyville road.
