As the dragon was carted through the streets of the Crystal Empire, ponies dropped whatever they were doing to wave. "I see a few of the mares noticed your arrival. I'd take a guard or two outside the castle walls if you plan on going out. A number of arguments have broken out over your name, especially during heat season." Shining Armor said nudging the dragon.
"I'm not really sure if I should be flattered or scared." Spike said as he watched a mare being muzzled.
"It's no wonder their so frantic. A handsome hero has come to visit our humble empire." Cadence complimented him.
"I guess I do alright." Spike chuckled.
"Alright, huh? Twily tells me about you're always coming home late.... or not at all. It must be nice to be so popular." Shining Armor added.
"You'd know what's that like, right? I mean before Cadence, of course." Spike pointed out.
"Actually, Cadence is the only pony I've ever been with." He said looking down. Spike noticed the alicorn give the stallion a sour look. It was the first time he could ever remember seeing any real discontent between the lovers before. The awkward moment was cut short as Cadence walked over to Spike and wrapped a hoof around his arm.
"Come, Spike! It's unbelievable how tall you've gotten since the Equestria Games and your arms are so strong. You're almost as tall as me." She said rubbing his arm and leading him into the castle. It came off as a bit strong but he didn't want to raise a fuss over what was probably an innocent gesture.
"So why'd you guys summon me? Is something going on?" He asked.
"It's complicated, but it can wait. I want to know more about how our honored hero has been living lately." Cadence said changing the subject.
"I can't complain. I mean Twilight's been on my case a lot about breaking my curfew. I come to the tree house a little late and she freaks out."
"Princesses, am I right?" Shining Armor joked earning a chuckle from Spike and another glare from Cadence. It was another awkward moment as they walked through the halls of the Crystal Castle.
"So I suppose you aren't looking for another special somepony yet?" Cadence asked.
"No, I mean after Apple Bloom. I just need sometime to figure out what went wrong. We started off so strong for awhile, you know. It was like we couldn't get enough of each other. Before I knew it, we were spending all our time together. Eventually, things started to feel forced. It was like we were together because we didn't know any better. When she said she wanted to break up, I wasn't so much sad as relieved it was over. It's so funny. I went from being unable to imagine my life without her to just letting go without so much as a fight. It's probably something you guys don't ever need to worry about. Right?" He laughed nervously expecting the same from his hosts. There was no laughter though, only catatonic stares ahead that indicated some kind of deeper thought process than his words should have inspired.
"It was probably for the best." Shining Armor mentioned.
"How do you mean?" He said as he felt Cadence clutch his arm a little tighter.
"I mean you didn't continue something because of some expectation you forced on yourself and ended up trapped in a black hole of a relationship with a mare you aren't even sure you like, let alone love." Shining Armor said causing Spike to stop walking. He looked to the stallion who was looking down then to the mare who was still holding onto him but looking away. The air in the hallway felt heavy as he realized his earlier fears about their being something different about them were true.
"Do you guys love each other?" Spike couldn't believe he was asking the couple's whose love had repelled an entire invasion of changelings.
"That's why we asked you here. We want you to help us find out." Cadence said looking up at him. Those beautiful purple eyes staring up at him made him feel like he would do anything to help them repair their relationship.
"Of course, I'll do anything to help you guys out." The couple smiled at eah other for what seemed like the first time since he arrived.
"That's good, Spike. Because what we have in mind is a bit unorthodox." The stallion explained.
"What did you have in mind?" The dragon asked.

"So if you guys don't work things out it could compromise everything." Spike said wondering why Shining Armor was content to watch Cadence being so friendly.

"Okay, so why do you need me?"

"Alright, let's start with this stopgap solution to save the Crystal Empire. I think you guys are smarter than to think entertaining a fetish is enough to restore the love in your marriage. It's actually pretty insulting that you think I'd fall for that. I mean inviting another person in to bang your wife sounds like the lousiest way to bring the magic back to your relationship. Then there was the way you acted during the whole pitch. It was like you weren't even trying to be serious. If this was a matter of the highest priority, you might want to wait till after you finished explaining to start seducing me, not during. Don't even get me started on making small talk afterwards and not asking me right away when I would return to 'refuel your dying marriage.' So are you going to continue this farce or do I need to point out more holes because I got this whole list in my head I could go through." Spike explained leaving them stunned. Shining Armor threw his hooves up and sighed.
"You got us, buddy, but if you knew this was fake, why'd you go along with it?" He asked.
"Have you seen your wife? She's drop dead gorgeous. I'd be crazy to pass that up. I'm glad I didn't because she's amazing. Seriously, that cheerleader bit is going to make it hard to go to bed at night, if you know what I mean. So who's going to tell me what this is really about?" Cadence laughed.
"It happened a few weeks ago. Shining Armor was on patrol when he caught a couple of ponies having sex in an alley. The experience left him intrigued with wacthing others engage in sex from afar." Cadence explained.
