My day has sucked. I caught my coltfriend cheating on me, I got fired from my job, and worst of all my favorite jacket has been ruined by an ill placed mud puddle.
"Worst! Day! Ever!" I shout at the grey, rainy sky. I garner the stares of ponies passing me by but I don't care, I'm pissed. I flick my cyan wings and sigh sullenly. Across the street from me I see a small bar. You know what I need a drink. I dart across the street, successfully avoid getting ran over and head inside.
The bar is small and cozy with three tables parallel to the bar itself. I trot up to the bar and plop down on a stool. The stool is nice and plush. I signal the bartender over to me, he's a tall lanky unicorn with red fur and a yellow mane. He's wearing an apron and a smart suit under it. He's pretty cute too. No bad brain no more colts.
"What'll ya have?" he asks. I feel his eyes trail up to my rainbow mane, my pride and joy. Normally I'd flick my mane to show it off but I'm not in the mood today.
"A vodka straight," I grumble as I slam my head on the counter. I'm not really a drinker and I've for sure never had vodka so what the hell. He places my drink in front of me and leans back. I grab the glass, not noticing his smug grin, and slam down the vodka.
It burn! It burns!
The colt behind the counter chuckles as I start choking on the burning liquid. I look at him, rather peeved.
"You do know you shouldn't drink vodka straight if your new to drinking right?" He says still chuckling.
"How the hell was I supposed to know," I growl," and besides why didn't you warn me?"
"Where's the fun in that?"
"Jerk," I cough again.
"Let me get you something else," he says and begins making some sorta concoction with his magic. When he gets done he sets down a martini glass filled with a blue liquid and cherries in it.
"What is it?" I ask and poke the glass with a hoof.
The colt rolls his eyes at me," Just drink it Miss Priss."
"Hey I'm not a priss," I glare at him and try so very hard to burn him alive with my magenta orbs. Drat it doesn't work. He cocks an eyebrow at me as if to say 'Oh really'. With a huff I pick up the drink and take a sip. Wow this is really good. I take another sip, lick my lips and then drain the glass.
"Another."
"Knew you'd like it," He says as he starts making another," So bad day huh?"
"You have no idea," I groan, resting my chin on the bar. The colt sets my drink down and starts cleaning the counter. He gives me this dead serious look and I can't help but snort at him. So cliché.
He chuckles too," Knew that would work. Seriously though bit for your thoughts?"
I sigh and start telling about how I had caught my coltfreind with another mare and how I had fallen asleep at work again and my boss had fired me. I liked naps okay if that's a crime then slap the cuffs on me. He listens politely and nods at some places. As I finish my tale of woe someone else enters the bar. The colt looks up and grins," Hey Star what 's up?"
"Another day at the grind stone and you Quill?"
I look behind me and see the most beautiful unicorn mare I have ever seen. Her mane was a darker shade of purple with a pink strip down the middle. She placed her black coat on the rack by the door. Underneath her coat she was wearing a with blouse. I watch her s she makes her way toward the end of the bar . Wow she is smoking hot. I didn't normally go for mares but I just couldn't take my eyes off her.
"You know same ole same ole." Quill says, " the usual?"
"Yes please," she says as she sits down and takes a notebook and pen out of her bag. I can't seem to tear my eyes away from her. She seems almost familiar, as if I should know her from somewhere. Who is this mare?
"Your drooling,."
"Huh," I blink and look at Quill," What?"
"Wow space cadet much," he says with a laugh. Star starts giggling too. Whoa I want that giggle for my ringtone.
"I-I'm sorry I-I di-" I stutter completely tripping over my words. Smooth mare.
"It's alright. it was kinda cute actually," She giggles again. Goddess I just found my crack," Like your jacket by the way."
I look at my jacket, stained with mud. I love this jacket. It had been my dad's and was given to him when he became part of the Mnaehatten Blazers. He was the star player for three years before his accident. He had been in a carriage crash and died before they could get him to the hospital. I was only a filly then.
"Yeah it was my dad's before he..." I don't finish my sentence as I try to fight the tears that fought to spill from my eyes. Even after all this time it still hurt. Suddenly I feel my jacket being lifted off me.
"Hey.'
"I'm not going to hurt it," Star says. With a flash of magic the mud stains were gone and it looked good as new. She levited it to me and I grabbed it with both hooves. Cradling it ot my chest, I thanked her.
"Your welcome. I'm Starlight."
"Prisma," I say in a small voice.
"That's a cute name," she says as she leans over the counter, resting her head on her hooves as she did so. Quill clears his throat and I contemplate killing him for drawing my attention from Starlight.
"Wow not that I don't mind pure amount of mare love in here but the hell Star your not usually this forward," he gives her a dead serious look," Your not an alien are you?"
Star looks at Quill with a look that says 'seriously' before she scoffs and downs her own drink. Quill looks at me and grins," Trust me she's not usually this talkative. She's usually got her nose buried in a book."
"Oh hush," she said as she stuck her tongue out at him," Your one to talk. Your worse at it then I am."
He cocks an eyebrow at her. They hold a staring contest fro a few minutes before Star breaks it and grumbles," I hate you."
"Love you too sugar," Quill says with a chuckle and starts cleaning some glasses. I stay silent for a bit and steal quick glances at Star while she continues writing. Seriously I feel like I know this mare. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Yeah that's it I'm paranoid. After a few minutes she slams her notebook shut, breaking my from my mental tangent, and puts it back in her bag.
"You wanna go for a walk in the park with me," she says getting up," Its just down the street."
I perk my ears at her question and all but jump off my stool," Yeah I'd love to."
I take out my wallet and start taking money out but Quill stops me," It's alright. This one's on the house from one weary soul to another."
"Thanks next time I'll buy the drinks," I say and follow Star out. Outside the rain has let up and the sun is starting to peek through the clouds. We walk to the park in silence, avoiding the puddles as we go. When we start walking down the parks path she suddenly says," Have you ever met somepony and just think that you know them from somewhere? Like you know you've never met that pony but something just tells you you've met them before."
"Umm yeah," I say shocked by her question," I have I guess once or twice. Why?"
Star shrugs," Just curious."
"Curiosity killed the cat," I quip.
"Ah but satisfaction revived him," she starts giggling at her joke and I can't help laughing at it either.
"So what kind of work are you in?"
"I'm a college professor if you can believe it."
My jaw drops. She can't be more than what twenty one twenty two. Nah she's gotta be kidding right? Star smirks at my dumbfounded expression," I get that reaction a lot. I was always really good at school and graduated high school at an early age then I just jumped right into college. Got my PhD in magical theory at twenty and I've been teaching at Manehatten University ever since."
"Wow you must be a genius or something," I say impressed.
"I guess," she sighs," Trust me it wasn't always easy being the youngest in the classroom."
"Yeah I can see where that would suck."
"What about you?"
I wince at the question," I'm kinda in between jobs right now but I'm training to become a marathon flier. Had the fastest times up through high school too. My mom often talked about me like I was the next Rainbow Dash," I chuckle at that. I always found that statement funny for some reason," Anyway right now I'm working on getting noticed by the Manehatten Blazers."
Star nods with a small smile on her face," Out of all the figures throughout history she is by far my favorite. She sacrificed herself to pull Equestria out of the dark ages during the Battle of Canterlot."
I listen to her ramble on, finding it cute how she went into lecture mode like that. A smile finds its way across my muzzle. We walk for the next few hours just talking about random things. A part of me wishes we could go on forever just like this. When the sun starts to set Star looks at her watch and starts to panic.
"Oh no I'm tardy!" she yells," I lost track of time. I'm sorry Prisma but I need to go."
She begins to gallop away and I start to think. I know I just got out of a relationship but there's just something about that mare that just fells right. You know what sometimes you just need to roll the dice. With that I decide to take the plunge and call after Star and she turns to look at me.
"Do you want to grab dinner tomorrow at The Silver Oak? I'll pay."
She smiles," I'd love to. It's a date."
With that she rushes out of the park leaving me with a stupid grin on my face. I start jumping up and down like a giddy schoolfilly.
"She said yes! She said yes! And its a date! Yes! Yes!"
I launch myself into the air and fly to my house almost breaking the sound barrier as I go.
