Story 3 - Overdue

Previous Chapter

It was a day like any other in the Golden Oaks Library in Ponyville.

The librarian, Twilight Sparkle, was doing her regular librarian duties such as making sure

the books are sorted correctly and kept dust-free and well organized.

In the basement her assistant, Spike, was going through some old boxes and files they had

found earlier that same day. Among other things, he found the previous librarians book records,

a list of who borrowed what and when it was returned. He decided to take a quick look in it,

when he discovered something... So he went upstairs to get Twilight.

"Hey, Twilight! I found something you need to see..."

The purple unicorn turned her head from the bookshelf she was dusting.

"What is it Spike?" she asked in a curious tone.

Spike pulled out the record, and found the page where he had seen the problem.

"Here.. It's the previous Library Record. Look here, last page..."

"But... according to this, there's a book that was never returned! By now, it's overdue by

almost three whole years!"

"That's why I thought you needed to see this. Should we try to find the pony who borrowed it?

The name and address is all here, We could easily track him down."

Spike said, his tone hinting that he was eager to get out of the library and do something

other than searching old boxes in the basement.

"Well.. As the current librarian, I need to take responsibility for any and all books belonging

to the library. Look up the address and name, and the title of the book. I will go and have a talk with him,

and explain the situation so we can solve this."

Spike looked it all up, as instructed. He gave Twilight the name, address and title.

She went out the door a few minutes later, and walked across town to the outskirts on the far east of town.

She went up to the small house, and knocked on the door.

A middle-aged stallion opened the door, and looked at Twilight with a questioning expression.

"And... what do you want? You here to sell stuff? You look like you're selling stuff. I don't need stuff."

Twilight tried to keep herself calm, and smiled.

"No, I'm not here to sell anything. I'm the Librarian at Golden Oaks, and.. well.. A few years ago, you borrowed

a book that never got returned, so I'm here to get it back. Your name IS Parchment Scroll, right?"

The stallions face turned slightly grumpy.

"Yes, I'm Scroll. And NO, I don't have any old book from your library."

"But, according to the previous librarians records, you borrowed a book titled 'The Art of Hay Weaving',

three years ago. But you never returned it."

"Do I look like I weave stuff?! I'm a stallion, not an old wrinkly mare."

At this point, Twilight began to get irritated. "Please, Sir. I'm not judging you or anything,

I'm just trying to get the book back to the library, I know you have it!"

"Nope. Get lost."

He slammed the door in Twilights face. Now, before we proceed you need to know that up until now,

Twilights week has been REALLY bad. Exactly nothing has gone the way she wanted it. So when

Parchment Scroll slammed a door a mere inch from her face, that was the final drop needed for her to completely

snap and finally loose her mind. Which explains what Twilight did next.

Instead of knocking again, she moved a few steps back to get room for movement. From this distance,

she leaped and double-hoof jump-kicked the door open, somehow still landing on all four hoofs

on the now broken remains of what was a door moments ago.

"OK YOU MOTHERBUCKER, NOW YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE ME BACK THE BOOK BEFORE I REALLY GET MAD!!!"

Now, Parchment Scroll was of course quite shocked by this, and stood paralyzed for a moment before he managed to speak.

"b-b-but I don't have the book, I already told you..."

Twilight looked around the room, ignoring the shocked pony. Her eyes fell upon something that, quite frankly,

made her go beyond angry. In the room, there was a table with a broken unstable leg. That leg was supported

by a book being placed under it, on the floor. The library book he had claimed not to have.

So not only had he lied about having it, he also used it the wrong way.

"You... YOU.. how DARE you use a LIBRARY BOOK as a TABLE SUPPORT?!" Twilight screamed at the stallion,

who now went from shocked to terrified. He tried to excuse himself, but was not very successful...

"I.. I didn't remember I had it there, I swear! I never look at it, it's just there.. I honestly did not know that was your library book!

Please don't hurt me...?"

Twilight just stared at the stallion, a insane smile slowly forming on her face as she looked around the room.

"Oh, I'm not going to hurt you..."

A few days later, Rarity came to visit the Golden Oaks Library. Twilight was in a much better mood now,

since the "incident" had been resolved. They sat down in the Library with a pot of herbal tea, as they often did,

to discuss the daily happenings and news over a cup of tea. They had been doing this once a week for a couple of months now,

and they both enjoyed the time they got together.

Rarity looked around the room, and her eyes fell upon something on one of the walls.

"Say, Twilight... When did you get that replica pony head trophy on the wall? It's rather..

morbid and quite frankly hideous.. Maybe you should reconsider having it on display in the library? It looks so real..

It could scare somepony you know, Darling. I honestly don't see the charm in having such creepy thing here.

It makes the library feel like a Nightmare Night carnical attraction. You know, those 'House of Horror' things."

Twilight smiled and poured some more tea as she responded.

"Oh that? It's a reminder for ponies to return books on time, before they're overdue..."

Rarity looked a bit confused.

"I don't think I quite understand how you mean, Twilight."

Twilight just kept smiling and drinking her tea.

"Well, nevermind that.. What's new with you?"

//The End...?
