It should have been me...
I sat in the rain in the middle of Ponyville where they used to sit. The same bench in the park where I met with her alone, the perfect pony for me... and now... She's gone. I sit here in the rainfall as I replay the images in my head over and over. The rain pour harder as I sit... And sit... And sit. I stare at the dirt path leading to the little quiet town square where she works. I remember how it happened like I remember to breathe. It was going perfect, and I failed her. I failed her family. I failed the five others. I failed. Nothing will ever be the same, I can't look at an apple the same ever again.
I was wearing my best tuxedo, well the only one Rarity made for me. I had a basket of apples, a bouquet of the most beautiful red roses, and I even had a present for her little sister Applebloom. A smile was strapped to my face as the farm came into view. I knocked on the door with my heart beating so fast it could've broken light speed. The door opened and there she was in the most beautiful dress I had ever seen, and with her hat she was more magnificent that Aphrodite.
"Applejack, you look marvelous.". I stare at her, my checks redder than her brothers fur. She then does that thing where she puts one foreleg over the other.
"Shucks Anon. You already saw me in this old thing before.". I bend down pull her chin up and stare into her sparkling green eyes.
"The moonlight makes anyone more beautiful, and the effects last forever.". She blushes and looks away.
"Anon, granny's gonna tease me.". She says stepping onto the porch. I peck her cheek and hand her the bouquet of roses. She takes a whiff and takes a bite of one with a cute little 'mmm' sound.
"Now don't spoil your dinner. I have a very special meal planned.". I take her hoof and I walk her over to the family barn. Being a gentlemen I open the huge barn door. Inside is one table with two plates and a candle opera. The Cutie mark Crusaders led us to our chairs and Scootaloo started to play her scooter. It was an assortment of spinning the wheels slowly to get the perfect squeaking sound. It actually sound really relaxing. Sweetie bell, using her magic, levitated us starting salads.
"So your special meal was in my barn bein served by my little sis's friends?". Applejack said taking a bite of her salad.
"They begged me to. And they certainly look cute. I wonder where Applebloom is?". I took a bite of the salad and looked into her eyes in the candlelight. The door opens and Applebloom walked in wearing a cute dress and had a notepad in her mouth. I wink at her and she walks up to the table.
"Applejack, you've been datin Anon A. Anonymous fer about a year now. It's been fun, romantic, but also strange. Sure ponies, griffons, and even minotaurs have had dis kind ov relationship. But a full blown alien has never happened before! It's so cool! But this alien has the heart of a pony. He may not walk like us, but he could as well be kin. But there is one thing he has yet to do.". I reach into my back pocket and take out the gold band. The first reaction I get is her gasping and putting her hooves over her mouth.
"Applejack Apple. Will you marry me?".
And this is where everything went to hell... Literally hell.
Her eyes water and start to tear up as she stares at the shining gold band that I held for her.
"Anon, I... I don't know what to say.". She said as I smiled.
"I love you Applejack, when I locked eyes with you that faithful day you and your friends found me, I knew it was simply fate. Fate is a funny thing. It brings epilogues. Let's not make this a happy ending. Let's make it a happy beginning. A beginning that starts a never ending story.". She says nothing and starts to cry tears of joy.
"Yes! Yes I will Anon! Yes!". She stood on her hind legs and brought her forelegs on the table with great excitement. But upon doing so the candle opera wobbled and fell onto the flammable hay.
"Applejack, why? Why did this happen to you!". I said falling off the bench. The rain poured harder as I cried... And cried... And cried. I cried my heart out until I was completely dry. The rain soaked my clothes and I started to cough and shiver. It should have been me! It should have been me dang it!
"Is this a joke for you! Huh!? Is this for your entertainment!". I said yelling into the sky. "You may have made me but that doesn't mean your fates should follow me here! This world wouldn't survive with you here! Leave me alone you bastard!". I threw a rock into the sky as if I could hit him. Again I cried... And cried... And cried. This couldn't have been her fate. It couldn't have been. I stand up with all the wits I can muster. I stumble over to the big Tree in the middle of this accursed park. I walk around it until I come to the heart that was carved into the bark. Inside of the the heart is written Anon plus AJ. Taking out my pocket knife. I start to carve out letters that turn into words that turn into one single sentence. I stand back and look at what it says under the heart. Under my broken heart.
It should have been me...
