It was the beginning of spring, and the sky was a bright, brilliant blue. The birds were chirping and the air had a slight breeze. Ms. Cheerilee was taking her class outside for gym. The fillies and colts were told to do two laps of the track. A few foals whined while others groaned, but Dinky Doo was excited. Dinky had been away on a sick leave for a couple of weeks (Pony pocks, and then stomach flu) and now, for the first time this year, Dinky could prove to her classmates and her teacher that she was good at something sports related. Dinky was very clumsy, making volley ball, basket ball, and well, anything that needed coronation rather hard. But Dinky could run. Fast. It was unusual for a unicorn filly to be good at anything athletic, and Dinky was defiantly not the best runner in Ponyville. But, she was the best sprinter in the class, and now she was going to fly. Not literately. She was going to run. Fast. Like a cheetah. Around the track. And win.
Scootaloo was not impressed. Ms. Cheerilee always let the pegasus fly around the track, and every time they teased her as she ran between the fast earth ponies and the wheezing unicorns. Scootaloo was an ok runner, but she really wanted to fly like a normal pegasus. The others usually giggled as she ran in the awkward gap between her classmates. But, today (thank Celestia) was different. They were preoccupied with someone else at the front of the track. Scootaloo couldn't see who it was, but the whispers from above were not in a teasing tone, but of shock. None the less, Scootaloo felt bad for whoever was their topic of interest. The centre of attention,(in Scootaloo's mind) was only good when you wanted it, which for Scootaloo, was never. Well, unless it was from Rainbow Dash. That was another story.
Applebloom was normally at the front of the track. The years of running around in the apple orchard had conditioned Applebloom to be a fast runner, and she always liked beating the other fillies. She knew it was petty, as half of them didn't even try to win, and technically it wasn't a race but, it still gave her a sense of pride to be the best runner in her class. Little did she know that something terrible was about to happen. Applebloom was winning, as per usual, when suddenly, Dinky passed her. Dinky. Dinky Doo. Derpy's foal! The unicorn! By the time Applebloom realized what happened, Dinky was about five meters ahead.
'Shit.' thought Applebloom panicked, as she started to sprint. She just couldn't let that twig beat her. She had a reputation to uphold. Sadly, due to her panicked state, Applebloom tripped and fell face-first into the red track sand. As the others started to passed her, Applebloom decided to fake an injury. She couldn't let her reputation be destroyed by Dinky, and this was the only reasonable solution.
"Ow my leg!" she yelled, loud enough for Ms. Cheerilee to hear."Ah think it's broken!"
"Yeah right!" said Diamond Tiara as she and Silver Spoon jogged pass, giggling at Applebloom's expense.
"There's no way it's broken!" giggled Silver Spoon. "If it was; you'd be crying!"
As the two fillies, turned the corner of the track, the started to unicorns run pass Applebloom. Well, walk pass.
Sweetie Belle was dramatically dragging herself as though she hadn't rested in days.
"What ever shall I do? I'm going to die!" she yelled, one eye closed the other looking directly at Ms. Cheerilee.
"Keep running Sweetie Belle. Your fine." said Ms. Cheeriee flatly.
"Urgh! But... I have shin splints!" whined Sweetie Belle really loudly.
Sweetie Belle's eyes rested on the mass of yellow and red fur in front of her.
"Applebloom! No! My dearest friend!" she yelled as she mentally made a quick sorry to Scootaloo later. Sometimes you need to exaggerate just a little, for good show.
Sweetie kneeled down beside her limp, lifeless friend.
"Ah'm fine Sweetie Belle." said Applebloom rolling over glaring slightly at the white unicorn. "Ah just have a broken leg."
"Oh my gosh! I have shin splints! Were going to die together!" yelled Sweetie Belle dramatically. Sweetie Belle was alot like her sister, Rarity in this sense.
Dinky passed by, shortly followed by the other students.
"Stampead!" shouted Sweetie Belle as she dramatically starred at the heavens."Run for your lives!" she added as she fell dramatically into the sand. This caused disgruntled glares from her class mates as they now had to carefully avoid her.
Scootaloo laughed at the overly dramatic Sweetie Belle as she passed by. Sweetie Belle was quite the act.
The girls watched Dinky pass the finish line, back near Ms. Cheerilee.
Sweetie Belle gasped as she stared at the lavender unicorn who was across the field.
Applebloom hit her face with her hoof in disgrace. Why did she let the twig win? Diamond Tiara was totally going to tease her about this later.
"I saw her at the front but...I didn't think..." whispered Sweetie Belle in disbelieve.
"Aw buck!" yelled Applebloom. "Buck, buck, buck!"
Ms. Cheerilee started to explain foot ball to her slightly shocked class across the field. Applebloom and Sweetie Belle stared at the group.
"I guess you won't have a cutie mark in running then?" asked Sweetie Belle.
Applebloom looked at her blank flank. "Nope. Do you have a cutie mark in over acting?"
Sweetie Belle looked in turn at her blank flank. "Nope."
Applebloom rolled her eyes "Ah guess we better head on over."
"Lets." replied Sweetie.
"Do you think I'll get a cutie mark in football?" asked Sweetie Belle as they made their way across the foot ball field in the centre of the track.
"Knowing our luck," began Applebloom "Ah don't think so, but that dosn't mean we can't try!"
"Race you there?" asked Sweetie Belle.
"Your on!" said Applebloom as she started to sprint across to the rest of her class.
"Hey!" shrieked Sweetie Belle, "I didn't say 'go'!"
