Romance is a complex thing. In shorthand, it tends to be described like pornography: the love blooms internally, being realized as a desire by the entity experiencing it, then externally, when presented openly to the accepting partner, followed swiftly by a messy but satisfying climax. If only life were so simple. The basic design of romance is so much more dreadfully complex - love takes a myriad of forms, and for so many reasons it can never be realized. It has leaders and followers, rules and conventions, excitements and disappointments, rewards and punishments - and the entire thing is often so addled with emotions and clouded judgments that it's impossible to see things for what they are.

There is no overarching goal of this story. No precise narrative. Life never has a direct narrative. Merely a series of first impressions, emotional reactions, and logic applied hastily after the fact to make everything look tidy.

This is a romance set in a humanized Equestria, redesigned to remove the magic and explicit fantasy, but to keep the essence of the characters' personalities and charms intact. Ponies are silly. So is love, but love likes to pretend.
