A dying world

A dying world, ages coming to an end, who knew maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all, who knew. Some left her with regret, some left with content, a few even left with laughter, many were sad, but usually, that sadness was not for themselves, it was for her. For her as she stood there, watching the light in their eyes fade, as she, in her being, had to once more let the sun set over yet another story coming to an end, wether that was about time, or prematurely. It hurt, she bore it, always bore it, stoic and steadfast, shining like the morning sun. She bore it with a soft smile, and a joy in seeing life flourish. She enjoyed every new face that followed, she followed families unfold, grow and flourish, and she watched them as they withered away or ran out into the sands of time. She tried to always be there, for those she cared for, and for those who resented her. She wasn’t perfect, she regretted that, many times she made grave mistakes, just to watch others pay the price, time after time. Not that it stopped her, not that it made her less capable of facing those who would threat what she loved and cherished. Even they faded away, even they had to face the setting sun. Most involuntarily, banished from existence or eaten up by their own malice in bars of hatred.
Sometimes though, the ones she once fought turned into some of her most curious allies. One in particular gave her a lesson she never expected. A lesson of fulfilment. Since days immemorial this one, enemy turned ally, had been, even had ruled to his heart’s content, but when he lived out a time, a for him short but eventful time, he choose to let go, he felt that life, immortal or not, had given him all he could ask for. As the sun set upon the dying world and the stars, those that was left, slowly blinked into existence, she pondered, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all. Then again, she wasn’t alone, by her side stood the forgiven, the mightiest foe she might ever had had to face, and the one dearest to her.
“It’s time.”
“Yes, it is time. Time to go home.”
They had never been stronger, two immortal beings, representing opposites, yet balancing each other out in near perfect harmony. In their final age of ascendance, the two had been unrivalled. Together they could control a world, and if they wanted, everything in it. No one but they knew that however, their glorious fame had faded, as the distance to mortality had gotten farther and farther away. They had left all open roles to those who came after them, left the spotlight and simply vanished. The times had been filled with mysterious occurrences. Just when people thought it was all over and everything had failed, someone or something always seemed to show up and bring back order and harmony. They had kept their duties, they had shared their burdens, but all that was coming to an end, as they once more flew through the night sky of a dying world. They landed in the mist of night, in a place that for some reason always had seemed to be a centre for events one way or another, it wasn’t its only of its kind, but it was the one they felt most connected to. As they stood there, among those trees that denied bowing to anyone, the forest even battled their will. Shadows rose, memories of people, held in the hearts of both immortal beings. In the final hours of a dying world, the past met the present through memories thought buried in millennia past.
“Tell me sister, how come it is always them? Even when I ask myself, it is the ones from that golden age I miss the most.”
“My dearest little sister, they and the ones before them, the ones after us, maybe it’s the elements, maybe it’s what they did for us.”
“We could bring them with us.”
“But their time was over, long ago.”
“And ours? Has it passed as well?”
“It would seem so and yet. I shiver, of both fright and delight, in the knowledge that somewhere within out grasp, the sun is soon to rise over a new world.”
“One that is not ours.”
“But could be ours to shape.”
“If you could start all over again, would you change a thing?”
“Only one little thing, my dearest little sister.”
“That being?”
“I wouldn’t involve myself in pity politics, I wouldn’t want to take charge.”
“Then let us put down out crowns, let them be our tokens of gratitude to this world.”
“Yes, gratitude, for all we’ve seen, for all that was.”
“What are we actually getting ourselves into?”
“You said it yourself, we are going on an adventure the likes of which no book shall ever be capable of holding. We know immortality, we know the curse it is, not one we would ever again wish upon others.”
“You think we’ll ever find her again?”
“Maybe at the end of times, I do not know.”
“Then our destination is set, even if it takes till the end of times, we will reunite with her again.”
“Yes till we reunite with her again, but now, dearest little sister, I think it’s time to let go, and let this one have the rest it so well deserves.”
As if a dream slowly descended upon the land, everything blurred. The final breath came soft and tired. No regret was found on the brow of the dying world, as the last stars above flickered and burned out, one by one. The moon set, leaving behind only darkness. Not the terrifying one hiding monsters and worries, but the true one, the peaceful and endless one, the one simply being the lack of existence. The two sisters saw only each other’s eyes for a while, then around them other twinkling stars, stars that soon turned into eyes came to be. They were there, looking at the two immortals with varying smiles on their faces. Both turned to face the eyes, both let their tears roll. Though they might never truly see these particular individuals again, none of them, even though they soon counted well above the thousands, would ever fade from their ever-beating hearts. Closest stood the ones closets to heart. There were a princess of love, a princess of friendship, and ten other ponies, all whom had carried and cared for the immortals beyond measure.
Two small tiaras was all that was left, two tiny tiaras on a dead rock was all that ever was found. One black as the darkest night, the other bright golden, shining like a morning sun. However, somewhere, out there, the two immortals embarked on their greatest journey yet. The long journey home and they did not rest, till they arrived.
Somewhere beyond the infinite voids that borders existence, a door opens and a warm woman’s voice sounds into the dark night.
“Tia! Selena!”
They embrace one another right there in the doorway. She smiles at them, a smile they both are more than happy to see once again. They step in, the door closes behind them and soon they are telling their stories, all of them. As the ages fall off their shoulders with each story told, they soon come to a realisation, the journey has found its end. The hour is getting late, it’s time for them to rest. In each other’s embrace, they tune out the world, never to be seen again. The stories however, will live on, and every now and then, one may become as lucky as to stumble over one of them. They are many, way too many for a single life or two, so what are you waiting for?
