Act 1: Symphony of Dreams Chapter 1

The cool air crept into the grand throne room as Celestia sat on high. It was a glorious day in Equestria, and the kingdom stood tall. Though her job was both tedious and tiresome, it was moments like this that made it all worth while, especial the fact that all of her royal duties had been done. Curiously, she had no recollection of completing them; nor could she remember waking. It did not matter for. it was just another testament to the difficulty of her title.

Bang. Bang. Bang. The chamber door exploded with sound as it swung inward toward the princess. In the midst of the commotion stood a lone pegasus guard. His armor hung by his side as a small drip of blood fell from his brow. Every breath brought him great pain as he raced into the the grand hall. Before Celestia could react, the guard was at her hooves explaining the events that had unfolded outside. “Princess Celestia, We are fighting as hard as we can, but we can't seem to harm it. So many have fallen already, and we do not know what to do. Please, we need your help.” With his last breath the guard finished his plead and collapsed from his wounds onto the cold marble floor. Celestia raced to his side, but was too late. The guard had given his all protecting Equestria, but the combined might of the royal guard was no match for what waited outside.

Frantically she turned her attention toward her ponies. With a mere thought Celestia found herself outside starring off her spire high above her kingdom. Smoke and fire had filled the air as the sight of her beloved city stood in ruins. The screams of her citizens tore at the alicorn's heart for it was too much for her to handle. Her blood boiled with rage as every second felt like ages. Bits of ember danced around her crown as the city turned to ash. She tried to take flight, but to no avail. Whatever this threat was it had seemed to have left her powerless. Celestia became pale as all of the affect left her face. Her eyes darted to the balcony under her hooves as it began to dissolve. The creature drew closer with every moment. The feeling of helplessness crept into her heart as she watched her little ponies being destroyed. With a loud crack the floor gave in. Unable to fly the princess went spiraling into the dark abyss that waited below. All she could do now was close her eyes and hope.

Waking in a cold sweat, Celestia heart raced. Scanning the room for a coming attack, her fears slowly dissipated. Celestia shifted under the sheets of her lavish bed as she came to her senses. There was no creature destroying her beloved ponies, nor were there any threat to harmony. The horrific sight was nothing more than a nightmare. Her kingdom was safe for now, and its ponies were still in their cozy beds. Though most ponies would revel in this realization, Celestia's concerns only grew. If this was just a dream, then where was Luna? Not since they were fillies had she experienced such a nightmare, and it was unlike Luna not to intervene. Celestia's stomach knotted as she raised from her slumber. With both grace and urgency Celestia galloped through the castle halls in search of her sister. Though Luna's absence was not unheard of, Celestia knew something was awry. She couldn't put her hoof on it, but the dream felt different and skewed like something had corrupted it. All she could do now was hope that her sister was okay.

Celestia did not know the fate of her sister, but she knew where to look. In the space between the world of the living and the dead, lives the realm of dreams. As princess of the night it is Luna's duty to protect this land. If it had become corrupted than Luna must be still trying to save it, or worst. Luna could be lost in the realm's endless wonders and nightmares. Celestia paused for a moment as she contemplated what needed to be done. Somepony had to transcend into the dream state to find Luna, but it couldn't be her. Not only did she need to be able to wake whomever she sends, but she would have to stand ready for anything that came out of this threat. Celestia knew there was only one pony she could trust to perform this task. It just so happened she and her friend had arrived this morning.

Twilight had finally gotten herself comfortable after the train ride from Ponyville, but she was ready for some much needed sleep. Tomorrow was the third annual Daring Do Convention, and Rainbow Dash and her wasn't about to miss it. Twilight may be one of Daring's biggest fans, but She had never seen anyone who loved Daring Do as much as Rainbow Dash. The two of them were hoping to see Daring again, especially since Rainbow only needed one more book to complete her signed collection of first editions. It was very kind of the Princess to allow them to stay at the castle, and on such sort notice. Too bad the others couldn't come, but to be fair Twilight was wanting to spend a little more time with Dash. It was true that Twilight thought Rainbow was both brash and headstrong, but she also thought she was one of the coolest ponies she knew. Part of her wished she could be a little more like Rainbow. Plus she hardly ever got to do anything with just her. Whatever the case Twilight was looking forward to the weekend to come.

Suddenly Celestia appeared at Twilight's side with concern in her eyes. The princess face was firm, but Twilight could tell that something was a miss. “Princess Twilight Sparkle, I am sorry for waking you, but there is a matter of up most importance that requires your aid. My sister has not returned from her journey into the dream realm, and the state of the dreams is beginning to twist and deform. Twilight I need you to follow my sister's hoof steps and return her to me. It will be a dangerous adventure, but if the dream world is left unchecked ponies everywhere will suffer greatly.”

“Celestia, what do you mean? How could Luna be trapped in a dream.” Twilight shifted herself into a sitting position as she focused on Celestia's every word.

“One's dreams and nightmares are all connected into a singular plane of existence. When a pony sleeps they enter a small personalized area within this plane. Here the plane displays either the dreamers deepest desires or their darkest fears. It looks into their hearts and creates the world to match them.”

“You act as if dreams are alive.”

“Because they are, Twilight. Dreams are alive and knowing. They change and flow like a river into a grand lake. If a pony was to get caught unwittingly into this stream, they could get dragged into the depths of this world. They could lose touch with reality. I am afraid this is the fate of Luna, and why I need you to travel into the dreamworld.”

“Yes, but that doesn't explain how this could happen. How does somepony get caught into the land of slumber, especially Luna for that matter.”

“I do not know how or why this has happened, but I fear that there is something waiting behind the scenes that we are unaware of. You must understand we are dealing with a power that most ponies do not fully understand, nor do they appreciate it.”

“Okay Celestia, I am in.”

“Thank you Twilight. Time is of the essence for night will not last forever. We must hurry.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. I am not about to let Twilight go on some crazy mission into dreamland without some back up.” Rainbow shot through the open doorway and landed between Twilight and Celestia. Dash hadn't slept a wink sense they had arrived due to all of her excitement. She knew that she was going to have to get up early if they were going to beat the lines, but she couldn't help it. Rainbow had not seen Daring Do since their run in with the rings, and she wanted to know all about her latest adventures. Besides it wasn't like Dash to ignore a panicked princess galloping past her room in the middle of the night. In fact she had been eavesdropping on the conversation the whole time.

“I am sorry Rainbow Dash, but sending one pony would throw off the balance of the world enough as it is. Besides when one is dream walking the danger that is seen is very real. Not only can one be injured, but I have seen ponies lost forever.”

“My point exactly. With the two of us looking for Luna we will be able to better watch our backs.”

“Okay, but there are far worst things than a pony's nightmare in the realm of dreams. Be weary of things that present themselves with a smile and a friendly face for they too can destroy you. You will face every aspect of yourself and of each other. Meet me in the grand hall in a few minutes, and we will begin. Thank you my little ponies, and I am sorry for what you are about to go through.”

Gathered in the cool throne room Twilight and Rainbow Dash stood nervously waiting for Celestia. Though they had been on several mission like this before, it was Celestia's fear of the this place that hit them the hardest. With a deep sigh Rainbow took to the air trying to shake off her anxiety. “Okay Twi, We got this. How tough can a couple of dreams really be. I bet we will be in and out in no time flat.”

Twilight shot her a friendly smile then look down at her shuffling hooves. “I hope you are right. It just worries me that Luna of all ponies has become lost. This is what she did for a living, it is even her cutie mark. I just think we shouldn't underestimate this place.”

“Come on Twilight if any pony can save Luna it is you, and besides if you get into trouble. I've got your back.” Rainbow floated to her side and placed her wing gently around her waist. “This'll be a piece of cake.”

“Your right Rainbow Dash. Let's do this. Let's save Luna.”

Act 1: Chapter 2

The room fell silent as Twilight and Rainbow raised from the cool marble floor. Celestia had completed the spell, but nothing seemed to have changed. Funny enough, the only thing different was the fact that Celestia had vanished. Was this the dream realm? Cautiously the two mares began examining the room when a loud thunderous voice overcame them.

“A warm welcome to you Princess Twilight Sparkle, what brings you and the rainbow one to the realm of dreams.” The two mares froze instantly as they watch the princess of the night manifest behind Celestia's throne. The walls rippled and flexed as they transformed before their eyes. What was once castle walls was now a star filled backdrop of silvers and blues. Luna's wings gracefully folded to her sides as she landed in front of the two stunned ponies.

“Princess Luna, your okay, but Celestia said you were in trouble.” Twilight's face tilted and contorted as her mind tried to comprehend what was going on. Sure she was happy to see Luna safe, but Celestia wasn't the type of pony to overreact.

“No more trouble than I am usually in. Why would my sister think I was in trouble?” Luna stepped forward as her mane flowed with the world around it.

“Well you see. Princess Celestia had a really bad nightmare, and when she woke up all of her instincts told her that you had been lost somewhere in this place.” Rainbow Dash hovered just above Twilight trying not to stray too far from the group. Dash might be the best flyer in all of Equestria, but she did not want to get swept up into the mystery of this world.
“I assure you both I am in no danger. As for my sister's nightmare it must have simply been just a bad dream.”

“Well that was the shortest adventure ever. I guess we'll have to go home now.” Rainbow's excitement slowly deflated as she lowered to the ground. Looking at her hooves she kicked and scratched at what looked like a blue cloud below her.

“I see no reason for you to have to leave so soon. Why don't you allow me to personally show you my domain.” Luna turned away from the pair of ponies and spread her wings. Off in the distance a single beam of light broke the darkness. Then in a moment of awe the light separated into hundreds of screens each displaying another pony's dreams. Twilight instantly recalled this plane of existence for it was the same one that she was brought to for her ascension into an alicorn. Both mares stood in awe as the images dance around the room. A grin crept over Luna's face as she watched her guest become mesmerized by this world. “Come my friends, for the fun will be doubled.”

“Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh. That was so awesome.” Dash's front hooves pressed tightly to her face. With an explosion of excitement she took to the air. Completing a loop she gently returned to a hover a few feet off the ground. “Luna you are so cool. Can you show us any ponies dreams. Like say our friends.”

“Rainbow Dash, we can't just go around and spy on everypony's dreams. That is just wrong and a little creepy.” Twilight shot an angry glance at Rainbow.

“Come on Twi, don't be such a goody two shoes. There has to be somepony's dreams you like to take a closer look at.” Dash circled through the air only to stop at Twilight's side. With a playful nudge Dash whispered into her ear. “Maybe a certain stallion that you've been secretly watching.”

Twilight's jaw dropped as her face went flush. Her body then turned a bright pink as she shifted her hooves. “Okay, but just one or two.”

“Alright! That's what I thought. So where do we start.”

“Be mindful a pony's dreams are their own. I must insist that you uphold the sanctity of this world and its citizens.” Luna spread her wings wide as to welcome the two onlookers to explore and discover.

Rainbow shot past one wall and then the other as she cataloged each dream and its owner. Suddenly she screeched to a stop as she spotted a particularly odd image. “Is that Spike?” Within seconds Twilight teleported next to her as the two mares starred in both confusion and disgust at what they saw. Neither one knew exactly what they were starring at, nor did they want to. “Uh Twilight, is he having an ice cream dream of Rarity right now.”

“I really wished I hadn't seen that.”

“I mean I knew he like Rarity, but yeah.”

“Just be glad you don't have to clean his sheets after one of his little dreams, that dragon can drool like no pony's business.” Twilight gently pulled on Dash's mane in an attempt to drag her away from this train wreck. “Maybe we should just check out another part of this world.”

“Okay, but I just can't look away.”

Luna's rolled her eyes as she ascended into the cool mist of the room. Then with a blink of an eye they found themselves in the midst of a large scape of trees. The sky exploded with color as if it was painted with stars. The moon lit up like a beacon of peace, illuminating the night. The crisp air pierced their fur sending shivers down their spines. The world sprung to life with sounds as a sort of weight lifted from the group.

“What was that.” Twilight shook her body as if to shake her mane dry.

“That my friends was the rush of a new idea, a new state of mind. Whenever we enter into a new undeveloped area, the world is created just for us. In one's dreams, nothing is created until the dreamer is present.” Luna's horn radiated a luscious blue hue as she pushed back some nearby brush revealing a small dirt trail. “Come. I have something that I wish you see.”

The group traveled in silence as they stared at the beauties that the forest had to offer. Blue orchids lined the path as fireflies danced and twirled through the breeze. The stars pranced through the air as their tales shimmered behind them. What felt like no time at all the two mares found themselves high atop a mountain looking off over the canvas of colors and hues of Luna's vision. In the distance a waterfall cascaded into the world around it. The celestial river twisted and turn as it defied gravity as it greeted the starry background in a symphony of song and dance.

“Luna this is so beautiful. Where are we?”

“This is my private sanctuary. I come here when I need to get away from it all. You two are the only ponies I have ever shown.” Luna lowered her head and took in a long deep breath. “Celestia was wrong to send you here. It was her I was after, not you. It is no matter for soon this will all just seem like a dream.”

“Luna what are you?..” Twilight turned to face the princess only to be met with her hind hooves. Twilight was sent tumbling down the dirt road as Rainbow Dash took to the skies. With an explosion of air Luna took off after her. She was not about to let Dash get away. Luna's horn grew in power as it lit up a bright blue hue. A beam of energy ripped through the air scorching the air as it rocketed past Rainbow Dash's wings. Then another. Rainbow soared high into the sky pausing only to turn for a nose dive. Dodging blast after blast Dash let out a fierce battle cry as she collided her back hoof into Luna 's face. The lunar princess spiraled through the air and crashed into the forest below.

Rainbow Dash's attention quickly changed to the safety of Twilight. Back at the cliff side Twilight crawled out of the bushes as she slowly regained her vision. Staggering to her hooves Rainbow Dash raced to her side providing some much needed support.

“You alright Twi, That was some kick.”

“Yeah I'm fine, but what happened to Luna?”

“I do not know, but we need to get out of here and warn Celestia.”

Suddenly the the leaves began to rip away from the trees as the sky turned a blood red. Like a clap of thunder a dark shadow erupted from the woods, eclipsing the moon in darkness. The ground shook and rumbled as it jettisoned the frightened mares high above the tree tops. The shadow mare smoked and shimmered as it descended toward the two mares. “You insolent ponies think that you can just wake up and warn that pathetic mare you call a leader. This is my domain and soon so will be the world.”

“You will never be the ruler of Equestria. Dash run.”

“What?”

“Rainbow Dash run!” With a flash of light Twilight and Rainbow Dash teleported across the woods. Both mares galloped with all of their might, but they did not seem to make any head way. “Rainbow wait. What's that sound?”

A blood curdling howl pierced through the veil as a pungent odor crept into their nostrils. The trees and bushes slowly churned through the air as they assembled into three massive creatures. The timberwolves' eyes shined a dark green as they circled the scared mares. Rainbow's hair stood on end as the wolves' hot breath blew against her face. Acting swift the two ponies were steadfast. Picking their moment Dash struck first as she bucked the nearest wolf. Quickly the trio lunged allowing Twilight to escape to the side. With a bolt of power the first wolf exploded, sending out a loud screech. Rainbow Dash took off around the other, creating a whirlwind of rocks and branches. Caught in the tempest the two wolves collided forming a mountain of wreckage.

The two mares stood triumphant as they took in their small victory. Regaining their breath, piece after piece of the fallen monsters started to reform. “Rainbow, I think we need to leave now. We can't fight these wolves forever and that shadow monster is getting closer.”

“Well what do you suppose we do? The forest is just a continuous loop. I know we have passed that stupid rock like fifty times.” Rainbow's eyes shot back and forth as she examine the area for threats.

“My magic doesn't work the same as it would in Equestria, but maybe I can allow us to exit this dream.”

“Well, why didn't you do that, I don't know, when that thing was about to attack us?”

“It is not as easy as that. I need more time. I trying the best I can.”

“Uh Twilight. They're back.” Dash pushed off the ground sending Twilight and her into the bushes. The timberwolves crept forward as they prepared to go in for the kill. The floor began to shimmer when the three wolves made their attack. With a powerful lunge the wolves flew through the air only to meet forest behind them. Rainbow Dash and Twilight had disappeared into the unknown.

Act 1: Chapter 3

The two mares huddled in each others embrace as they awaited their fate. Slowly they opened their eyes as a beam of light showed through their spread wings. Opening their wings the two ponies revealed a sun filled meadow. The cool morning breeze swept through the tall grass like waves on the ocean. Crickets chirped in the summer sun as a single cloud hung in the sky. Other than this the only sound that could be heard was the harsh breathing of the tired duo.

“Rainbow Dash, are you alright.” Twilight climbed to her hooves as she looked out over the endless field. She had no idea how they got out of the forest, but she was deeply thankful.

“Yeah I'm fine. Twilight what happened back there.” Rainbow stared at Twilight with anger and distrust in her eyes.

“I don't know what saved us, but whatever it was it bought us some time,”

“That's not what I'm talking about Twilight. I want to know what happened with you.” Rainbow Dash lightly lifted off the ground as to gain a place of authority on Twilight.

“What do you mean?” Twilight turned to the defensive as she raised to eye level with Rainbow.

“I've seen you in battle. The way you took on Discord or Tirek without a hint of fear, but just then. You...you...you coward and ran. You could have stopped that thing like it was nothing, Twi. So yeah, I want to know why we ran.” Rainbow raised a little higher in the air.

“That nightmare could shape the world around it at will. It would have destroyed us both. So I did the smart thing and thought of our safety.” Now flying high in the sky the two mare continued to gain altitude. The once empty sky was now full of dark thunder clouds. The storm pulsed and rippled with every heated word.

“So I'm not an egghead like you, but if you felt like we couldn't have fought that thing than why didn't you just zap us out of the dreamworld.”

“Well I couldn't” Twilight voice trailed off as the storm reached its peak.

“What? I didn't quite catch that.”

“I said I couldn't! There, are you happy now? I can't.” Twilight lowered her head in shame as she made her way back to the ground. The storm raging above dissipated to nothing as the sky returned to its original state.

“Okay, I'm sorry.” Rainbow Dash landed beside the depressed mare. With an outstretched wing she gently caressed her in a warm, secure embrace. “Explain to me, why you can't send us home?”

Twilight looked up at Dash with tear filled eyes. The pain she felt for endangering her friend was to much to bear. “No Dash, I am sorry. Ever since my battle with Tirek my powers have been acting weird. I don't know if it was the overexertion or my body channeling so much energy, but I have not had nearly the same amount of control. Not to mention this realm is so strange and thriving. I am afraid my magic isn't much help here.” Twilight covered her head with her wings, not wanting Dash to see her sadness.

“Twilight why didn't you tell us? You know we always have your back.” Dash carefully extended her front hoof as she lifted Twilight's head. “But if you did not save us, then who did?”

Suddenly a ray of light shined down upon the weary mares as the wind swirled around them. Blades of grass and dirt entered the air forming a figure of a familiar alicorn princess. With a flash of light a Celestia appeared as a faint specter. “It was I who saved you from the wolves Rainbow Dash, but before you ask. No, I can not bring you home. At least not yet.” Celestia step forward and bowed.

“Celestia is it really you, or are you just another illusion brought on by this world.” Twilight quickly got to her hooves.

“I am sorry Twilight, but there is no way of knowing for sure. You will have to take it on faith. My sister holds the key to this mystery, and she is the only one who can stop this growing nightmare.”

Rainbow Dash planted her front hoof. “Well that is all well and good, but we are kind of having trouble navigating this place. Not to mention we have no idea where Luna is.”

“She's right. We are walking around blind.” Twilight walked to Dash's side as to form a united front.

“I wish I could help more, but the dreams are trying to ascend into this plane. I must remain here in the real world.” After a moment of pause the wind started to blow once more. “Remember that this place is just one long dream. It is created and destroy by the will of the dreamers. So if you want to find Luna, you must dream.” The sun became bright, blinding the two mares. When they regained sight Celestia was gone.

“Well did that make any sense to you cause I am drawing a blank.” Rainbow Dash looked over at Twilight. The cool air swept past her hooves.

“I think, I do. We have to dream.” Twilight turned to the open field and closed her eyes. Concentrating Twilight's horn lit up with power as the ground shook and rattled. With a loud eruption a large oak tree sprung from the earth. Its branches filled with leaves as its shadow flowed out over the tall grass. Twilight knees grew weak causing her to fall to the ground. Twilight's eyes widen as she and Rainbow Dash looked on in amazement. She did it. She could shape dreams.

“Okay that was cool. Here let me try.” Dash followed Twilight's lead by closing her eyes. Moments passed without any change to the world. Rainbow's face twisted as she tried with all her might to alter reality. “Huh. What am I doing wrong.” Rainbow took in a deep breath and tried again. Her hooves dug into the ground while her face turned a bright red. Suddenly a light mist settled over the plane. “Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.” Rainbow Dash trotted in place she reveled in her success.

“Dash. I hate to ruin your victory, but I don't think that was you.” Twilight pointed off into the distance as the tall grass was set ablaze. The smoke quickly engulfed the two mares as the flames waltzed around the field. Soon the air was thick and hard to breathe. There was no where to go, for the flames blocked all exits. Twilight and Rainbow Dash pressed close together in order to keep track of the others position. Both ponies' eyes watered as their lungs screamed with pain.

“Kof, kof. Twilight, now would be a good time to use that dream power. Kof” Rainbow Dash placed her head under Twilight's waist trying to support her weary friend. Rainbow Dash is a trained athlete who has flown in far worst aerial conditions. Twilight on the other hoof has never dealt with such a harsh environment. Twilight's eyes closed as she collapsed under the heat and smoke. “Twilight, Twi, you can't give up on me yet Kof, kof.” The flames crept closer singeing the two mares fur and feathers. Sweat and tears rolled down Dash's face as she tried to come up with a plan. A sense of hopelessness sank into her heart as she could see a faded image of her fallen friend. Rainbow Dash forced herself back to her hooves, gasping at what little air was left. Rainbow Dash tried with all of her might to change the dream world, but couldn't. There was no where left to go, and Dash was out of ideas.
With her last ounce of strength Rainbow Dash rocketed deep into the heart of the smoke. Plunging herself into the unknown she flew for what felt like ages. With ever flap of her wings she felt both her body and mind slipping away. She had to get Twilight out of here, but she couldn't hold onto her for much longer. A small beacon of light shown through the tempest, providing Dash one last shot at hope. Dash gave one final push. The cool, clean air pushed past Rainbow's wings as she passed out due to the stress. Both mares hit the hard marble surface of what appeared to be a large floating platform. Had Dash created this world or was this the work of Celestia.

Dash gasped hard as she regained feeling in her body. Wearily she panned the area for her next move. She had to keep moving. The smoke had not caught up to them yet, but it was not far behind. The small island hung in the air as it slowly drifted through the sky. Covered in both grass and a small marble pathway the lonely island housed a large windmill. Rainbow Dash watched as the smoke slowly snaked its way through the portal toward them. “Okay Twilight you can't quit on me yet. I need you. Come on Twi you can make it.” Dash looked down at Twilight's motionless face as she realized what she needed to do. “I hope no pony sees this. Hang in there Twi.” Dash placed her hooves softly behind Twilight's head. Dash took in a deep breath and placed her lips tight to Twilight's mouth.

Dash's attempts to revive Twilight came to a stop as Twilight sprung to life. “Kof, kof. Rainbow Dash, you saved my life.”

“Yeah that's great. Now I need you to save our lives.” With a powerful screech a large phoenix ripped through the smoke. “Mainly from that.” The fire bird flew high into the air sending out flares of fire radiating off of its majestic wings. The smoke flooded the platform as fire rained down upon the frightened mares. “Okay Twi, time to work your magic. Literally, time to go.”

Twilight could barely stand as she stumbled to her hooves. Rainbow helped as much as she could, but time was running out. The phoenix picked up speed as it made it's first dive at the pair. With great force its sharp talons ripped by, just missing the weary travelers. Quickly Twilight gestured toward the old windmill for it was the only shelter on the floating island. Twilight's lungs burned with every breath as she and Rainbow limped toward the lonely windmill. With every run the large bird made, the heat of its powerful being burned the two mares. Reaching the windmill Twilight's horn gently glowed as a small portal began to form. Quickly she step through, but not before the phoenix could make one final attack. With great power and force the fire bird ripped through the island, sending it spiraling into the unknown. Twilight looked in horror for Rainbow Dash hadn't walked through the portal yet. She couldn't move. Twilight's mind couldn't comprehend what had just happened. Suddenly a ball of fire jettisoned through the portal as Dash's lifeless body fell to the floor. Then the portal closed.

“Rainbow Dash.” Twilight raced to her side and felt for a pulse. Her horn ignited with light as a beam of energy shined down on Rainbow. Not even Twilight's most powerful healing spell could help her fallen friend. She knew the truth. Rainbow Dash was gone. Her eyes filled with tears as she buried her face in Dash's cold breast. “Rainbow Dash you're okay. Stop playing around. You're okay,” Twilight sat motionless as she stared at Rainbow Dash. Her body laid burnt and blackened as her wings were left bare and broken. Tears dripped down Twilight's eyes and fell on Dash's face. “Rainbow Dash, don't leave me. I need you. Please I love you.”

Twilight sat holding Dash's head in her hooves as her heart silently shattered into pieces. Slowly the clouds began to rumble as a light rain fell on the sad scene. What should Twilight do now? Luna was still her only option for escape, but how could she face her friends? The world around her turned gray and lifeless as a shadow crept behind her. “This is it my little pony. You come farther than I had expected, but there is no where left for you to hide,”

“No! You will pay for what you did.” Twilight exploded into flames as a large ball of energy formed above her head. The lights of the universe funneled above her horn. The world became black as a beam of light scorched through the air disintegrating the shadows. Twilight panted heavily as smoke billowed off her horn. The creature was gone, but she did not feel any better. Rainbow Dash was still never coming back. Suddenly the world started to collapsed upon itself sucking everything in like a black hole. Twilight and Rainbow were swept up into the air. Spiraling through the air Twilight fear grew as she disappeared.

Act 2: And The Sun Will Turn To Darkness Chapter 1

Twilight found herself floating lifelessly through the void. Her body was numb and cold as the spark of life had left her eyes. She had failed. No matter how hard she tried she could not save her. She couldn't save Rainbow Dash. Slowly her hooves settled to the soft ground of a what appeared to be a grassy hillside. A light fog settled onto the meadow as a cold rain broke the silence of this world. Twilight's head hung low as each step dragged on. The rain stung with each drop washing away the ash and soot that covered her body. Her wounds couldn't match the pain she felt inside. She walked for what felt like hours, all the time her eyes never left the road.

The rain slowly lifted opening the sky to a still cloudy day. Closing her eyes, Twilight took in a deep breath. Her lungs still burned from the smoke as she contemplated the current string of events. She couldn't give up now. The fate of Equestria still hung in the balance, and Rainbow Dash would never have walked away from a fight. If only she had some clue as to what to do. Letting out a long sigh she looked to the heavens. Off in the distance a single rainbow shined through the darkness. Shredding a single tear, she had found her heading. At first she was at a slow amble, but she soon corscendoed into a full gallop as the sun grew radiated with life.

Her mission was clear; she had to find Luna. She had to dream. Her mind cleared causing the world to ripple around her as she suddenly found her self standing in a large castle library. Shrugging off the rush of this new world Twilight studied the room. The lights that lined the wall revealed a grand hall filled with banners and books. Looking closely the room seemed familiar as if she had been her before. Slowly stepping forward the room exploded with noise as her hoof steps echoed off of the walls.

“Hello, who are you?” Twilight's head turned to the left as a young white filly stepped out from behind a large tapestry draping down the wall. A puzzled look moved over the fillies face as she stared at the alicorn that stood in front of her.

“Oh, hello. My name is Twilight Sparkle, and who are you?” Twilight carefully step closer to the shy mare, surprised to see another pony in this world. Had she crossed over into somepony's dream. She couldn't see why not. The question was, who's?

Hi. I'm Celestia. Are you a princess like me? The filly stepped forward nervously at first, but then found herself under Twilight's wings, examining her every feature.
“Celestia!” Could she have heard right? Was this Celestia or a projection given off by the dream? The better question, could she trust her? The cogs turned in Twilight's head as she linked the young mare to the source of this location. She was now in the once grand Castle of the Two Sisters.

“Hey, are you listening to me? Do you want to play hide and seek?” The white mare tugged at Twilight's wing with all of her might trying to gain her attention. “I am currently looking for my sister, but if you help me find her, it could be your turn next.”

Twilight was uncertain at first, but maybe this mare could help. “Sure I would love to play. Well let's go this way.” Twilight started down the the long hall as she scanned the walls for clues. Suits of armor lined the walls. Each one stood proud as they waited on their small platforms. Though they did not have eyes the suits of armor seen to be watching the two mares.

“Wuna, Wuna, I'm going to find you.” The filly Celestia bounced after Twilight all the while screaming Luna's name. Passing by a nearby mirror Celestia caught a reflection of herself waiting patiently on the other side. Her eyes glimmered green as a cheshire smile crept over her face.

“Celestia, are you alright?”

“I'm coming. Twilight, you and me are going to be the best of friends.”

Reaching the end of the hall stood a single wooden door. There was no markings to where the door led nor was there any special engravings on it. It was just a plain door. There was something odd about the whole thing, and the simple fact that this door was place amongst such a elegant castle made it stand out even more. Twilight carefully studied this oddity as she lightly place her hoof onto the door knob. A bright light shined through the opening as the door slowly swung open. Twilight couldn't remember if she had walked into the blinding light or if she was just swept up by the brilliance of it all.

When her eyes finally adjusted she found herself standing in front of her newly formed castle in the heart of Ponyville. The morning sun snaked its way over the horizon as the its rays washed away the dark blues of the night. Twilight looked around for Celestia, but the young filly was nowhere to be found. Walking through the town everything seem like a normal day. Ditzy Doo could be seen preforming her daily mailmare duties, while the Cutie Mark Crusaders were off in the distance on some sort of adventure. This had to still be the dreamworld, but Ponyville seemed so real.

Suddenly a pink blur came shooting out of a nearby alleyway. Before Twilight could react she was slammed to the floor by the bouncy pink pony. “Twilight, I am so glad to see you. I have missed you so much. So how was your trip? Ohh, and Daring. Did you get that signature for Rainbow? I bet she is so happy right now. Did you have a good time? Hey where is Rainbow Dash anyway?” Pinkie Pie's stood over Twilight as her face drew back and forth from Twilight's face.

“Calm down there sugarcube. I am sure Twilight is tired from her trip.” Following close behind Pinkie was the rest of her friends. Each one held a look of excitement to see the return of their friends. “So Twilight. How was the convention?

“Pinkie Pie, Applejack, it is so nice to see a friendly face.” Twilight could not help herself as she engulfed the two mares in a warm embrace. Tears welled up in her eyes as the weight of her experience was lifted in her friend's secure hooves.

“You alright Twilight.” Applejack step away from the group hug and examined Twilight's saddened face.

“Yes darling, you look simply awful.”

“There something I need to tell everypony about Rainbow Dash.” Twilight took in a deep breath as she wiped away the tears flowing down her face. The others slowly gathered in close. “While we were in Canterlot Celestia asked us to enter into the dreamworld in search of Luna.” Every word felt heavy as they crept out of her mouth. Her heart bled for what she was about to reveal. “We got into trouble, and...and....” She couldn't say it for it hurt too much to admit to the truth. Her voice quavered with fear and sadness.

“Twilight, it is okay. You tell us when you are ready.” Fluttershy quietly stepped out from behind her friends. Carefully she place her hoof in Twilight's hair stroking it in a calming manner.

“I did all I could, but...” Twilight buried her head deep into her hooves. “Rainbow Dash is gone.”

“Oh where did she go off to? Was it the bathroom, or was it Las Pegasus? Oh I love guessing games.” Pinkie Pie bounced up and down with excitement as she pondered the question.

“Pinkie Pie please let Twilight finish.”

“No Pinkie, Rainbow Dash is dead! She is gone, and it is all my fault.” Twilight felt both relief and pain as the words exploded from her mouth. At least she knew her friends could comfort her. Her eyes went from face to face as she studied their reactions. What was at first a look of shock turned to anger as their warm caring eyes hardened.

“Of course it is your fault. You was the one who wanted to go to that stupid convention in the first place.” Applejack stomped her front hoof on the ground as steam exhaled from her nostrils.

“Yeah, a lot of good being an alicorn princess did. I say that you bring nothing but pain and suffering into our lives.” Rarity stood next to AJ as the two mares unleashed an onslaught of hateful remarks at the weary mare.

“Stop it you guys. I did everything I could. Don't you think I feel horrible enough without you two going off on me?” Twilight's heart tore inside as her “so called” friends words stabbed at her very soul.

“No, every time we do something with you we almost die. The day you first arrived in this town it all went to Tartarus in a hoof basket. Then there was the whole ordeal with Tirek. Now you gone and got one of my best friends killed.” Applejack turned away from Twilight as she tried to restrain her anger. “I was more than happy to live my simple apple bucking life on the farm before you showed up, and you know what? I reckon I would like to return to it. Twilight Sparkle I am done being you friend, and I wish I never have to see you again!”

“Do you all feel this way?” Twilight eyes could barely keep from tearing over as she look for some sign of hope against the faces. All stood silent as every one of their heads lowered to the ground as to keep from making eye contact with the heartbroken princess. “Fluttershy, you have to understand.”

“Twilight I think it is best if you just leave.” The yellow pegasus sunk to the floor as she cowered behind Pinkie Pie. She look stunned and unemotional at the realization of Rainbow's demise.
There was nothing left to say for it was clear. Twilight was no longer welcomed in her home. Her hooves trembled as she slowly turned away from her friends. Her eyes had all but dried up as she sank deep into depression. Walking back down the lonesome road a familiar white filly was standing at a near by house. Seeing that she had been spotted a grin slipped over her face as she waved for Twilight to come over. Twilight's anger grew as she galloped toward the little mare. Celestia knew this was a dream and yet she allowed Twilight to be lost to her own emotions. The sly filly gently opened the nearby door and playfully trotted through it. Reaching the door way Twilight bucked it with all of her might sending the door flying off of its hinges. In the heat of her rage she soon found that she had returned to the lavish décor of the castle.

Driven on pure adrenaline Twilight tromped through the labyrinth of rooms looking for the filly Celestia. The hallways had changed from their previous rendition, yet housed the same themes and motifs. The suits of armor still sat guarding the aisle’s as if waiting for an intruder to breach the castle's defenses. Making her way into a large ballroom steam heavily vented from her nostrils. Off in the distance a faint voice slithered it way it Twilight's eyes. “Don't be mad at me. I didn't know where that room would lead. I promise.”

“Auugh! I am sick of this place! I am sick of letting down all of my friends, and I just want to go home!” Twilight looked at the innocent little pony hiding beneath a nearby table and collapsed to the floor. “I just can't do this anymore. I can't keep putting my friends in harms way. I just don't have it in me. That dream was right they are better off with out me in their lives.”

“You can't quit now. Who will help me find my sister?” Celestia pressed her face against Twilight's trying to gain some type of reaction.

“You should just go on without me too. I wouldn't want to get any pony else hurt.” Twilight turned her head away from Celestia and rolled herself into a small ball. “I am just going to wait here.”

“Please, you have to help. I need to...we need to find Luna.” Twilight was unresponsive as the room stood quiet. “Please.” Twilight's wing covered her face as if to shield herself from the mare's empty words. “Fine!” Celestia raised off the marble floor and walked over to a nearby lantern protruding out of the wall. Swiftly the young alicorn pushed a chair against the wall using it as a ladder to reach the bright lantern above. “If you won't help me then I will make you.” With a outstretched hoof Celestia pulled downward on the gold plated torch setting off a chain reaction of noises.

Twilight's ears perked up as the noise traveled in her direction. “What did you just do?” Twilight sprung to her hoofs as she started to trot in place. Her eyes quickly turned to the floor as a loud crack sounded underneath her. With a sudden gasp of air the floor swung open sending the stunned princess sliding down a long looping slide.

Screaming down the slide she rocketed off into the darkness only to be stopped by the side of a large metal hanger. Spinning from the crash Twilight's head felt like it was on fire. The impact left a small cut along her forehead allowing a small bead of blood to slink down her face. Wearily the mare found her hooves and raised from the dirt. “Where in the world has that filly sent me now?”

Following close behind was a playful yell as Celestia appeared through a hole rippling in midair. Gracefully the filly glided to the ground as if nothing had happened. “Yeah! Wasn't that the most fun you ever had?”

A look of hatred was shot in Celestia's direction as Twilight tried to calm herself. Whether she wanted to or not she still had to get out of this horrid realm. Looking around she knew she had been here before, but couldn't place exactly where. Emerging from behind the hanger she looked up in amazement as rings of clouds and machinery filled the air. Fleets of pegasi rushed through the air as they proceeded to preform dazzling tricks high above the earth. Only at the Wonderbolt's Academy could this much equipment and this many talented pegasi be found. Walking out onto a giant runway Twilight gave out a loud gasp as a familiar mare shot down from the sky landing in front of her.

“Rainbow Dash!”

Act 2: Chapter 2

“Rainbow Dash!” Twilight was stunned for she could not believe her eyes. Was this a cruel joke played upon her by some evil nightmare or was this the genuine article? Twilight didn't care for she was overwhelmed with emotions as she stared at her beloved friend. With a powerful puff of air she erupted off of the ground as she tackled Rainbow Dash in a warm heartfelt embrace. Even if this was just another dream she was going to enjoy it as long as she could.

“Hey Twilight. It's nice to see you too.” Rainbow Dash wiggled and squirmed as she attempted to escape Twilight's awkward grasp. Gently she patted at the alicorn's back as if to signal the end of the hug. “Twilight you are embarrassing me in front of my fleet. The leader of the Wonderbolts has to maintain a certain image. You are making me look soft.”

Twilight slowly unwrapped her hooves as Rainbow's words sunk into her head. “Leader of the Wonderbolts?” Her eyes started to water as she realized this may be the only time she would see Rainbow as a Wonderbolt, let alone the leader. Even if this was just an illusion she was going to see this one out.

“Twilight, are you feeling okay? You act like you didn't know that.” Rainbow hovered into a beam of sunlight as she struck a triumphant pose. Rainbow's metals glistened in the sun as her bomber jacket fluttered in the cool breeze.

“Yeah. I'm fine. I'm just so happy for you.” Twilight's voice trailed off as she began to sadden by the very idea of it all. She couldn't fool herself. This couldn't be Rainbow Dash. She saw her die, yet just then she seemed so real. There was something special in her eyes that the other projections didn't have.

“Hey. Since you are here, you should stick around for the show. You won't want to miss out on the new trick I have been working on. I don't want to brag, but it is awesome. Like me of course.” Rainbow Dash trotted in midair as she gracefully fell into formation with her fleet. “Hurry up Twi. You better go get your seat.”

The filly Celestia bounced up and down with excitement as she clapped her front hooves together. “Oh, oh, ohhh. Can we stay for the show? Please, I will be good. Please.” Celestia's head tilted to the side
as her eyes widen. Celestia's puppy dog eyes glinted in the sun as she stared into Twilight's very soul.

Twilight closed her eyes as she began walking toward the edge of the runway. Was she really going to put herself through so much pain for a few more seconds with Rainbow? Wearily she found her way to an empty seat as music started pumping from a nearby speaker. Starting soft the music crescendoed to epic proportions as the sky filled with a light fog. Then with an explosion of sound and color three pegasi ripped through the mist with both grace and style. Twilight's mouth hung open as Rainbow Dash led the charge as she twisted and turned through the air. She was beautiful. With every pass through the air Twilight couldn't help but fall in love. With ever nosedive Twilight's heart stopped as she was captivated by Rainbow's daring tricks. Twilight and Celestia watched in awe as all of their favorite moves were preformed.

The show grew to an end with everypony at the edge of their seats. All of the pegasi had cleared out of the skies when a thunderous voice screamed over the speaker. “Alright everypony, the moment all of you have been waiting for. The amazing Rainbow Dash will now preform the frightening and most difficult trick any pony has ever tried. The dreadful Triple Pony Death Drop. That is right fillies and gentlecolts the Triple Pony Death Drop. Only two other ponies have dared to try this stunt and neither one of them survived. So give it up for Rainbow Dash!” The crowd erupted with cheers as their heroine raced pass her roaring fans leaving a rainbow colored streak in her wake.

Twilight's heartbeat grew louder and louder as Rainbow Dash made her final lap before the stunt. Sitting in awe she took a moment to check on Celestia only to find that she was missing. Where could she be? Twilight scanned the stands for the white filly as a sinking feeling crept over her body. Ever since they first met Twilight knew that she was trouble, but she let her kindness blind her from the truth. Trying not to draw attention to herself Twilight snaked through the crowd in search of Celestia when out of the corner of her eye she saw her. High atop the lowest hanging cloud stood the tiny alicorn. Her eyes grew black, and a dark green aura engulfed her horn. Before Twilight could react Celestia faded into the surrounding clouds forming a mass of dark green rain clouds. Twilight froze in horror as her attention turned toward the rainbow streak shooting by.

Rainbow Dash took her position and began her descent toward the crowd. The sky funneled around her as she gained speed for her final act. With her goggles pressed tight against her face Rainbow Dash was fearless against the harsh winds. Dash was fierce rocketing through the air. With every loop and spiral the crowd grew quite as they were stunned by the sheer beauty. Even flying at high speeds Rainbow Dash notice a change in the weather. Soon the skies were black as cold rain pierced the harmony of the skies. With a bright flash of energy Rainbow took to the defensive as a lightning bolt scorched by her wings. The lightning was one thing, but when the rain turned to hail she found she had a problem.

Twilight shielded herself from the growing storm with her magic as she took to the skies. Flying as fast as she could toward Rainbow Dash she tried to dream the storm away, but whatever filly Celestia had done it couldn't be wished away. Twilight couldn't see a thing in the midst of this weather, but she wasn't going to lose Dash again. Every second the hail grew larger in size causing Twilight to rethink her methods.

Crash. For a brief moment the air was clear as the bolt of lightning broke the darkness. To Twilight's horror the image of a pegasus free falling was burnt into her eyes. “Not again.” Without thinking Twilight found herself shooting through the rain and hail toward the ghostly sight. Memories of Rainbow's burnt remains raced through her head as she approached the storm beaten mare. Though she was lightly hurt it was clear by her blacken wings that Dash was struck by lightning. With outstretched hooves Twilight brought her in close to her body safely guiding her back to the ground.

Hiding in a nearby hanger Twilight nursed Rainbow's wounds as she watched the skies for danger. Rainbow was alright, but was still stunned from the blast. Rainbow Dash looked toward Twilight with tired eyes as she faced her hero. “Thank you.” It was all she could say for she couldn't understand what she was feeling. Twilight had saved her before, but no one has every tended to her like this. Carefully she nuzzled her head deep into Twilight's wings as a feeling of security and warmth filled her heart. Twilight's body turned red as she felt Rainbow press close to her body.

Twilight had dreamt of this moment for too long, but it just didn't seem right. She had to know the truth. What should have been a lovely scene turned to anger as Twilight leaped to her hooves. “No I can't do this. Rainbow Dash, I saw you die. So I have to know one thing.”

“You saw me die?” Before Rainbow could finish her sentence her eyes widened with confusion. Her face turn bright red as she found Twilight's lips pressed tightly against her's. Her heart raced faster than it had ever done before as a weird feeling churned inside. Embarrassed and confused Rainbow shoved off the cold floor and hung in midair. She didn't know what to say for she really didn't know what just happened.

“Rainbow Dash?” Twilight suddenly felt sick to her stomach as she grew uncertain of her actions. Her heart grew louder and louder as she awaited Rainbow's response.

Rainbow slowly lowered to the ground as she attempted to slow her breathing. “Twi, Why did you just kiss me? It wasn't because of that whole mouth to mouth thing was it?” It was unlike Rainbow Dash not to speak with confidence, but at this moment she was trembling with every word.

“Because. Because, I love you Rainbow. Ever since the Equestrian Games I just can't help but want to be with you. The way you fly and are so confident in yourself. I just... What did you just say about saving my life?” Twilight's eyebrow raised as a that spark of life returned to her eyes.

“Yeah after the smoke... Wait! I remember. But that means.” A sharp pain surged through Rainbow's skull as all of her memories rushed into her head. “It's all coming back to me.”

“What do you remember?” Twilight grew excited as she hoped that this was the real Rainbow Dash.

“The phoenix came crashing through the platform, and then I woke up back in the castle. When I got up no pony seem to know anything about what happened so I just thought it was a bad dream.” Rainbow Dash lowered her head as her voice became rough, “Three years! Three years I lived in this nightmare!” Her anger grew as tears began to flow down her face. “I became a Wonderbolt. I started a family with Soarin. I fell in love, and it was all this stupid place.” In the middle of her rage she noticed Twilight had dropped behind her wings. Quickly her mind returned to the kiss as she realized what she had said. “Twilight?” Rainbow carefully walked over to her. “I am sorry, but I don't like you that way. I like stallions. I mean I love you, but I'm not in love with you.” Twilight only drew deeper into her wings as shame and embarrassment crept over her.

“Aurgh. Twi, don't be that way. I'm sure you will find your special somepony, but it is not me.” Cautiously Dash plunged her hooves into Twilight's wings and brought forth her face. With a soft grin Rainbow leaned her head forward and gave Twilight a light kiss on the cheek. “Just for the record that was some kiss.”

“Whoa is it really Rainbow Dash, the leader of the Wonderbolts?” Out of the rain trotted in a wet and happy filly Celestia. Unaware that Twilight had seen her transform into the storm she galloped up to the two mares. “You were amazing out there. Do you mind signing something for me?”

Smack! With a powerful buck of her hind hooves Twilight sent Celestia flying across the hanger. “Twilight, what is your deal? You just kicked that poor filly.”

“That was no filly. She is the nightmares.” Twilight fell into attack position as she planted her hooves firmly into the ground. Her eyes shot around the room trying to find the nearest doorway.

“Well done. It seems that I have underestimated you once again, but no more.” The small filly dusted herself off the ground and aged into a full sized alicorn. Her eyes grew dark green as her sun cutie mark blacken into an eclipse. Smoke and shadows danced around the room as she slowly towered over the steadfast mares. “You will not be so lucky this time. You will die!” Like a clap of lightning the shadows snaked around the room creating a small army of shadow mares.

Twilight and Rainbow Dash look at each other, and they each said okay. Releasing a fierce battle cry the two ponies charged into the army of shadows. The two mares fought with all of there might landing blow after blow. With every attack the shadows merely reformed and rushed back into battle. Twilight had had enough. As the shadows swarmed around them, Twilight's horn grew bright breaking the darkness of the room. With a surge of power the shadows were washed away leaving only Nightmare Celestia standing in their way. Together the two mares galloped forward inciting their attacker to do the same. Moments before they collided Twilight's horn gave off a flash, teleporting her and Rainbow Dash in front of the exit.

Making sure Rainbow Dash walked through first the two ponies busted into the grand hall of the castle. Almost instinctively they gathered as much items as they could to place against the small wooden door. Knowing that no place was safe only safer the two mares took a second to breathe.

“Twilight? I think we have company.” Rainbow lightly tapped Twilight on her shoulder. Slowly she turned around to find that the suits of armors had surrounded them. Each wielded a board sword the knights stood strong. Slowly they closed in on the pair.

Act 2: Chapter 3

The two ponies pressed tight against the door as the knights advanced forward. “You ready for this Twilight?” Rainbow Dash shot Twilight a firm look as they stared down their attackers. The two mares stood tall as they planned their next move. The soldiers crept closer and closer as they slowly raised their swords.

Moments before the attack a small voice rang out over the grand hall. “Wait! Don't hurt them.” The knights fell into attention as they sheathed their blades. Twilight looked around the room searching for filly Celestia. She was a crafty mare, and her evil should not be underestimated.

Confused by the lack of a speaker Rainbow Dash gently lifted into the air cautious of the still waiting armor. “Umm hello?” Rainbow glided around the room closely listening for some response. “Anyone there?”

Twilight closely followed behind her ready to attack at a moment's notice. Out of the silence the small voice once again broke over the room. “Hello.” Slowly a midnight blue filly emerged from under a nearby chair. “You haven't seen my sister, have you? We are playing hide and seek, and I've got lost.” With sniffle the filly look toward the floor and then at the two approaching mares.

“Princess Luna?” In a unanimous voice Twilight and Rainbow Dash stared in confusion. Carefully they examined the princess knowing this could be just another trick. With a release of air Twilight nodded at Rainbow. Though she couldn't prove it she knew this was the real Luna. There was a special something about Luna that she had only seen in Rainbow Dash back at the academy.

Twilight lowered to the floor to get at eye level with the scared filly. “I know, but it is okay. I'm Twilight, and this is Rainbow Dash. We have been looking for you. You don't have to be afraid anymore.” Twilight gently raised her hoof in Luna's direction. “We can help, but you have to let us.”

“Really? Why would you do that for me?”

“Because we are your friends.” Rainbow Dash joined Twilight on the floor as they tried to comfort the mare.

“Who would want to be friends with me? I am just going to hurt you like I hurt my sister, like I hurt everyone.” Luna turned away from them as a tear dripped down her face. “I will just become Nightmare Moon again.”

“Wait. You remember Nightmare Moon?”

“Yes I remember all of it.” Luna stepped out from under the chair and returned to her true alicorn form. “I am sorry that you have come all of this way to find me, but I didn't want to be found.”

“Wait a second you were never in any danger at all! I died in your stupid dreamworld.” Rainbow Dash's anger grew as her rage hid her loss of words.

“Rainbow enough. What do you mean you don't want to be found?” Twilight turned red and took in a long deep breath trying to maintain her resolve.

“I haven't been happy for a long time. The way everyone stares at me like I am going to turn into a monster again. The look of sadness my sister gives me everyday for the suffering and damage I have caused. The nightmares can't be stopped. I have tried so hard, but I can't fight it. No one can.” Luna cowered into her wings as she turned away from the group. “You found me for nothing.” Slowly the world started to shimmer as she attempted to fade out of the room.

“Where do you think you are going?” Rainbow Dash grasped at Luna's tail with her teeth.

“Luna, the nightmare is seeking to destroy Equestria. We can't defeat it without you.” Twilight stood tall as her words filled the room.

“We also need you to get out of this place, if those dreams don't kill us first.” Rainbow released Luna tail and passed her hoof through her mane.

“Why do you think I have been hiding in this memory. It was the only place the nightmares couldn't find me. It was also a time in my life where my sister didn't see me as a disappointment. I can't help you in fighting it, but I can return you to your world.” Luna raised her head and looked at the two weary mares. “Leave this place, and tell my sister of the nightmares. She will know what to do. Just tell her I am sorry, and I will always love her.”

“You're not coming with us?” Rainbow Dash stomped her front hoof forcefully against the floor. “We are not going to just leave you here. We have come too far.”

“Rainbow is right Luna. We're not going to leave you.”

“You don't understand. I do not want to leave.” Steam exhaled from Luna's nostril as she hatefully turned toward the two mares. “Who are you to tell me whether I can stay in this realm? Here I am happy. Here I am free of my past.”

Bang, bang, bang. The door exploded with sound as the shadows attempted to find their way into the room. “There is no time to argue. If you want out of this world, now is your only chance.” Luna's wings spread wide as her horn grew a brilliant blue hue. A vortex swirled in the middle of the room as the door gave to the abuse raging outside. The smoke slowly filled the room as a army of shadows marched into the castle hall.

Luna's knights stood their ground as they drew their blades. With an explosion of metal and noise the two forces collided as the lunar princess opened the portal to the real world. Shadows and armor were tossed asunder as the nightmare stepped through the opened doorway. Its eyes were a dark red as her voice froze the three ponies in their tracks. “Olly olly oxen free. Hello Princess Luna. I have been looking for you. Now my victory is all but complete.” The portal slammed closed as the nightmare stalked toward her prey.

Luna's fear grew inside as she cowered behind the others when out of the corner of her eyes she saw the strength that both Twilight and Rainbow showed. Their courage reminded Luna of her own power. For too long she had been haunted by the nightmares, but no more. Swiftly she rocketed to the front of the group and spread her wings shielding her friends from the darkness. “I am here. You can not scare me anymore nor will you harm my friends. This realm belongs to me. Today you will be stopped.”

Before they could react the nightmare and Luna had collided. Bolts of energy exploded from the clash as the two beings fought with their all. Twilight and Rainbow Dash watched as the the room turned to black, and the walls and floors slipped away into nothing. Flying through the void Luna took to the offensive as beam after beam of her magic ripped through the emptiness of this place. The nightmares moved unscathed against Luna's attack as it land a powerful blow to her chest.

Spiraling into the darkness Luna quickly recovered. Shaking off the pain pulsing from her chest she spearheaded toward her enemy. Her eyes shined white with power as her spirit soared. With a commanding scream an orb of light blasted off of her horn engulfing the nightmare in its path. Like a blink of an eye the nightmares were crushed into oblivion. The vacuum was silent as Luna hovered in place. “Ha ha. I have done it. The nightmares are defeated.”

Menacingly a large seven headed hydra emerged up behind the unaware princess. “Luna look out!”

“Did you see how I faced the nightmares? I haven't fought like that in so long.” Before Luna could finish her speech the hydra's head came lunging toward her. Its teeth were razor sharp as its breath was heavy on the lunar princess's neck. Almost like she was going about her daily activities Luna looped around the large ravenous head and fired off another beam of magic. Luna had regained her confidence and her ability to dream. Twisting and turning through the air each head closely followed the moon princess. Soon the hydra found itself wrapped in knots as it struggled to be free. A grin crept over Luna's face as she pierced through the hydra's soft underbelly causing it to dissipate into a puff of smoke.

The smoke of the hydra began to funnel into the distance as a faint voice echoed from the unknown. Distant at first it then grew into castrophany so immense it could be heard in the dreams of everypony in Equestria. “You dare deny me! I was the one who led you to power! I was the one who loved you when everypony else shunned your precious night. I was the one who stood by you on the moon. No more! Today your nightmares become reality!”

With a flash of light the void filled with life as what appeared to be the moon formed in the empty space. The three mares circled up as the stars slowly blinked into existence. The moon rumbled and shook as the nightmares emerged beyond the horizon. Blocking out the sun a gigantic Nightmare Moon towered over the three mares. Luna watched in horror as her fear took a physical form. “If you will not join me willingly then I will replace you as the ruler of the night.”

The stars in space rocketed above Nightmare Moon's horn as the three mares felt themselves being pulled toward the monstrous being. The world turned silent as a massive beam scanned the landscape destroying everything in its path. Running from the blast the three mares could feel the heat pulsating off of the column of power. Taking to the skies Luna and Twilight provided cover fire while Rainbow Dash took to the offensive. Narrowly dodging blast after blast Rainbow gained speed for her final assault. With grace and passion Rainbow exploded with light and color as a sonic rainboom canvassed Nightmare Moon. Distracted by the shock wave Nightmare Moon was unaware of Twilight's and Luna's swooping attack. Two rays of energy passed over the nightmare creature as the princesses rushed by.

Leading a rainbow streak in her wake Dash sped away from the growing battle. Though she was fast she could not out run the massive ball of energy sent after her. Engulfed in light, Rainbow found herself colliding against the cold dirt of the moon as she fainted from the intense pain.

“Rainbow!” Twilight watched in horror as Rainbow passed out. Unable to move, Twilight started toward her fallen friend only to be stopped by Luna's strong words.

“Twilight, she is fine. You have to stay focus on this battle.” Luna fired off another beam of magic only maddening the vengeful dream.

Nightmare Moon exploded into the sky crashing down on top of Twilight's small alicorn frame. Luna watched as her friend's battered bodies laid on the cold lunar landscape. Her eyes filled with tears as her anger grew. Luna's heart screamed with pain as a single word broke from her lips. “Enough!”

Luna's body shimmered with energy as she jettisoned toward the nightmare that had haunted her for so long, Fueled with passion she let out a powerful scream. Gaining speed Luna ripped across the moon's surface colliding into Nightmare Moon. The world flexed as the two mares were sent shattering through the walls of the dreamworld. Twilight's eyes widened as the very fabric of the dreamworld splintered around her. Quickly she ran toward Rainbow Dash grasping her in a scared embrace. Taking in a deep breath she awaited their fate as the world gave out a loud release. Suddenly everypony in Equestria awoke in a cold sweat as they were force back into reality.

And then there was nothing.

Act 3: Dreaming With Open Eyes, Chapter 1

Twilight and Rainbow leaped to their hooves as they suddenly awoke in Celestia's royal chambers. A look of concern shot across their face as their hearts still raced from the battle. Was it over? Rainbow Dash quickly scanned her body for any wounds while Twilight carefully walked out onto the spire.

“Hey Twi. Did we win?” Rainbow flew to her friend's side to join her on the balcony.

“I honestly don't know, but I think we are home.” A slight beacon of dawn crept over the horizon blinding the mares as they stepped out into the newly formed day. The sun slowly climbed high into the sky as Celestia triumphantly stood in the cool breeze. “Celestia!”

Celestia turned toward Twilight only to find her wrapped around her chest in a warm embrace. Caught off guard Celestia lightly placed her head on Twilight's shoulder. “It is good to see you returned to the world of the waking. I am forever grateful for everything you and Rainbow Dash have done.” Celestia raised from the hug and proceeded to bow in appreciation of Rainbow's help. “You two have help bring harmony back to the realm of dreams as well as helped my sister regain her faith in herself.

With those words a winged image cast its shadow across the platform sending the two weary mares into defensive stances. Their journey was too long and painful for them to drop their guards so easily. Suddenly the shadow passed by again only to reveal Luna gently gliding down from the fleeting night. “Hello Tia, It is a lovely morning.”

“Welcome home Luna.” Celestia lightly bowed to her sister.

“Celestia? I am sorry.” Luna's head hung low as she shuffled her hooves.

“Oh Luna.” In a single motion Celestia had Luna wrapped in her hooves. “I am the one who should be sorry. I should have been more open to your feelings. I shouldn't have drove you away.”

“So what happened to the nightmares?” Rainbow Dash broke the mood of the loving scene as she slowly hovered around to the other side of the two princesses.

“Rainbow Dash!” Twilight shot the rainbow pegasus a hateful look.

“What? We did just spent what feels like an eternity fighting that stupid thing. So forgive me for asking about it.” Rainbow returned the evil glare and carefully landed next to her friend.

“It is okay Princess Twilight, she has a right to know.” Luna turned away from her sister and stared at the two inquiring mares. “The nightmares have been defeated and locked away deep in the dreamworld. As long as ponies dream the nightmares will exist, but I believe we won't have to deal with them for along time. Maybe then I will be fully prepared to face them.” Luna's words trailed off as the last words left her lips. Though she had regained a lot of her confidence back, she still had a long way to go. In her mind she was still to blame for their recent events.

“No, next time, we will be ready to face them together.” Celestia placed her hoof under Luna's chin. “Luna I am proud of you for facing your fears.”

Luna's eyes watered as her heart soared inside. “I want to thank you all for everything, especially you two. Rainbow Dash and Princess Twilight Sparkle, if it wasn't for your help I would still be lost in my emotions. Thank you.”

“You are welcome. You are our friend Luna, and we will always be there to help.”

“Yeah Luna if you ever need anything feel free to ask. Besides what were we doing today anyway?” Rainbow Dash froze instantly as she realized what she had just said. Rocketing into the air she fanatically circled the room. “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!”

“Rainbow Dash what's wrong?” Twilight's eyes swirled in her head as she attempted to follow the excited mare around the room.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!”

“Rainbow Dash!” Twilight's horn turned a bright lavender as she froze Rainbow in mid flight. “There. Now tell us what's wrong.”

“What time is it? What time is it?”

“I have just raised the sun. Why do you ask?” Celestia's head tilted to the side as she try to figure out the connection between the time of day and Rainbow's sudden outburst.

“Before we got caught up with the whole dreamworld thing, Twilight and I were going to go check out the Daring Do convention. We were going to get there early so we would be first in line.” Rainbow trotted in the air as her glare shot back and forth between Celestia and Twilight.

“Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that. Well I bet we can still make it if you still want to go.”

“Ah yeah, I want to go. Daring Do is like my hero, but we will never get there in time.”

Twilight placed her hoof on Dash's shoulder as she gently pointed at her horn. “We could always teleport there.”

Without another word the two mares exploded out of the room with a flash of light leaving the two sisters to reflect on their relationship and the events that had transpired. Luna and Celestia look out over the balcony at the still waking kingdom and gave out a sigh of relief. “It looks like you have created another beautiful day Tia.”

“Thank you Luna. I think everything will be okay.”

Having just finished her daily weather duties Rainbow Dash shot through the sky so she could get back to reading the latest book in the Daring Do series. Weeks had past since Twilight and Rainbow had journeyed into the dream realm in search of Luna, and life had all but returned to normal. Racing at top speed Rainbow couldn't help noticing that Ponyville just did not seem as sharp as it normally did. The town just seemed blurry. Ever sense she had returned from the dream scape things just haven't been the same. Having experienced her own death had left her shaken and broken. Not only was she not sleeping well at night, but everything just felt wrong. Normally Rainbow would be flying high about her brush with death, but after having started a family she wanted something more meaningful. Mostly she wanted love.

Navigating the streets of her home a familiar alicorn princess was spotted traveling off in the distance. “Luna?” Brushing the sighting off at first Rainbow slowly started to think about the whole situation. Why would Luna be in Ponyville let alone walking down a random street? With a powerful loop through the air she rocketed after the moon princess. Landing forcefully on the dirt alleyway she quickly scanned the area. Confused Rainbow returned to the air hoping to catch another glimpse at the lunar alicorn. Luna was no where to be found, and she wasn't exactly the type of pony who blended in.

Rainbow grew frustrated as her efforts to find Luna came to an end after several minutes of turning up nothing. Wearily she slowly glided toward her home for she was ready to call it a day. Reaching the front steps of her floating home she carelessly dropped into the cloud's soft embrace. Taking a moment to shower and grab a bite to eat Rainbow finally settled into her bed with her beloved book. Lost in the words of her favorite writer she soon became unaware of the world around her. The room grew cold as she sat in silence upon her warm bed. Reacting to the shiver creeping up her spine Rainbow's eyes glanced over to the open doorway just as a faint specter passed through the hall. With a bright rainbow streak Rainbow rocketed off of her bed into the hallway. Sliding to a stop she caught only a second of what appeared to be Luna again. Trying with all of her might Rainbow took off after Luna searching every inch of her home only to find nothing.

She knew she wasn't crazy, but why would Luna be in her house? She had to be seeing things, but she was certain of what she saw. Closing her eyes she tried to draw some type of conclusion, but nothing made sense. Suddenly a light bulb went off in her head as her mind turned to her dear friend Twilight. If there was any pony who could help her with this it was her.

Stepping outside Rainbow was shock to find that the day had long since passed. The night's dark embrace was quick to greet the cyan mare as she plunged deep into its heart. Twilight's and Rainbow Dash's relationship hadn't really been the same since their kiss at the Wonderbolts Academy. The awkward tension was too much for either one of them to handle. Not to mention the annoying questions presented by their friends about their obvious discomfort. As time has gone on, the two mares just saw less and less of each other. It was never her wish to grow so distant with one of her closest friends, but being with her just brought up so many weird feelings. So much so that Rainbow just found it best to stay away.

Landing at the still stunning tree based castle Rainbow took a moment to think through what she was going to say. With a hard swallow she mustered up her courage and knocked on the massive front door. Finding that no pony was answering her knocks she flew up to an open balcony window and carefully walked inside. The window led to Twilight's personal bed room where there slept the young alicorn princess. Looking over the lightly sleeping mare Rainbow carefully stepped forward causing Twilight to erupt with a bloodcurdling scream.

“What in the name of Celestia are you doing in my bedroom? Were you watching me sleep?” Twilight stood up in her bed as she covered herself with her blanket. “Rainbow Dash what is your problem?”

Rainbow stood stunned as her face turned a bright red. Her embarrassment was clear to all as she attempted to form an understandable sentence. “No! I just need your help.”
“So you crept through my window. Have you ever heard of a front door.”

“Hey I tried knocking, and no one answered. So there!” Rainbow hovered around in the air as she tried to dig herself out of the hole she had dug.

“Well I guess I haven't gotten use to living in such a big house yet.” Twilight's anger slowly slipped away as she lowered her covers and climbed out of bed. “Okay Rainbow. What can I do for you?”

“Well.” Rainbow lowered to the ground as she search for the right words. Rainbow was never the type to open herself up to another, and to be fair she was scared. “I need your help Twi. Ever since we got out of the nightmares I haven't had a good night's sleep. Not to mention everything just seems off.”

“I know how you feel. The image of your death haunts me everyday. It is just so emotionally draining.” Twilight walked over to her friend and place a reassuring hoof on her shoulder. “I keep getting this uneasy feeling like this whole experience isn't over.”

“I don't know anymore Twi. I spent what felt like years in those dreams, and it never seemed like this. Plus I never remember catching fleeting images of Luna at that time.”

“What did you say about Luna?” Twilight's eyes widened as she perked up from Rainbow's words.

“Yeah here recently I thought I have seen Luna creeping around in the background. Why do you ask?”

“Because I have been seeing her too!” The two mares stared at each other with a confused look on their faces.

“Why would Luna be stalking us like that?”

“Honestly I don't have the slightest, but I know someone who might. Let's go talk to Luna.”

The two ponies set off toward Canterlot when right behind them the moon princess appeared. Her face held no affect as she stood in silence before her friends. “Uhmm Luna? Are you alright?” Twilight cautiously stepped forward only to freeze in her tracks as the lunar alicorn opened her mouth.

“Twilight.” Luna's words were heavy and full of pain as they slipped from her lips.

“Yes Luna. I am here.”

“I'm so sorry.” Luna lowered her head and suddenly looked forward as she morphed into the horrible Nightmare Moon. With a powerful scream Nightmare Moon rocketed toward the stunned alicorn. Thinking fast Rainbow took off shoving both Twilight and herself to safety. Nightmare Moon disappeared from the room leaving the two mares uncertain of what they just saw.

The walls of the room shook and crumbled as the floors began to melt away. Twilight and Rainbow looked out on the town only to see the buildings collapsing around them, and the skies turned to black. Together they watch helplessly as Ponyville sank into oblivion. Their hearts bled inside as the hard truth ripped at their souls. They had never left the dreamworld, and their fight was far from over.

Act 3: Chapter 2

The earth collapsed around the two mares as they found that they were once more in the void of the dream scape. The tiny platform grew smaller with every passing second as a powerful force tore away at everything left in the world. Clinging to the small floating island the two ponies fought with all of their might trying to come up with some way out of this predicament. The void's grip on the two mares was too much to resist for long, and there was no clear way out.

Rainbow Dash could feel the impending doom creep over her as the dreamworld drove closer to its destruction. Her hooves were growing tired, and she knew that if her hooves were about to give out than Twilight didn't have much time. Looking at her weary friend a light bulb illuminated her mind. “Twilight!” Rainbow's voice came across faint as the roaring vortex drowned out most of the noise. “I have a plan.”

Twilight listened as hard as she could as tears poured from her tired eyes. Her arms shook from exhaustion, and she was ready to just let go. She didn't have anything left to give.

“Twilight! Did you hear me? It is the utmost importance that you remember to dream!” With Rainbow's last words she closed her eyes and fell backwards. Without any sort of fight Rainbow soared through the void toward the unseen horrors waiting for her.

“Rainbow Dash! No!” Twilight's heart raced as her mind looked for anything that could save her friend. In her frantic state her thoughts were scattered and disconnected. The only thing she could make out was a little spark of hope that stirred deep in her heart. There had to be a clue in Dash's words. Then her mind cleared, and all of the puzzle pieces fell into place. She had to dream.

Digging deep Twilight took in a long breath and released a single bolt of light that froze everything in a calming silence. The world stood motionless as Twilight carefully lifted her head and stared in awe. She had done it. With a new found confidence the young alicorn stepped off of the platform as she triumphantly sauntered to the still waiting Rainbow Dash. Like a million shooting stars the reality of this realm rocketed across the abyss as its beauty surged through the two mares. Transforming and shifting before them a lavish garden sprouted from the ground. Neither one of them could believe their eyes as nature grew and twisted itself creating a vision of unimaginable allure.

“Well I am glad that worked.” Rainbow brushed at her mane as an arrogant smile swelled on her face. “I never doubted you for a second.”

“What do you mean you never doubted me? All I saw was you just giving up! You, never doubted me?” Twilight exploded with rage as Rainbow's blatant disregard for what almost happened was the last straw. “Obviously you don't mind dying again, but I can't go through it another time.”

“I know you can't. Why do you think I let go?” Rainbow playfully jabbed at Twilight's ribs causing her anger to grow.

“You wanted me to go through all that emotional pain? What type of monster are you?” Twilight jerked away from the rainbow pegasus. “I thought we were friends.”

“Twilight it's not like that. I knew you wouldn't let me get hurt.” Rainbow raced to her side and looked her straight in the eyes. “Remember when we were in the meadow before the phoenix showed up?”

“Yeah what's your point?”

“In that moment you shaped the fabric of the dreams, so I thought, with a little motivation, you could use it to get us out of that mess. Like Celestia said, this world belongs to the dreamers.”

“So why didn't you do it?”

“You saw how bad I was at it. For what we needed I think I made the right call.”

“You are a jerk. You know that right?” Twilight wiped at her eyes as she wrapped Rainbow in her embrace. “But it was a good idea.”

“So what now. It seems the nightmares are still at large.”

“Well I think I have a plan this time, but we will need Celestia's help.” Twilight stepped forward as she started to comprehend the true power behind dreamers. With little effort a small portal opened allowing the two mares to make their exit.

Time had passed when Twilight emerged out of the darkness into what appeared to be Luna's private sanctuary. It felt like ages since she was first brought her by that imposter, and she hoped that the nightmares had returned as well. Twilight spread her wings and soared high into the midnight sky.

“Nightmare Moon! This ends now! Come out and face me!” Twilight's words carried throughout the garden as she mentally prepared for the impending battle.

“Ha ha ha, so you have come to accept your fate. Well let it be known that this is the day of eternal night.” Manifesting from deep within the landscape Nightmare Moon answered Twilight's call.

“No I am formally challenging you for the kingdom of dreams. Whomever wins will rule this realm unopposed.”

Nightmare Moon floated in silence as she thought about Twilight's challenge. “Tell me. Why don't I just kill you?”

“Because you are not certain in your ability to defeat me, and by taking my deal you can insure that I am rid from this place.”

“I see. Well then, let us begin.” With a flash of lightning the world suddenly shifted to a blank white world where the rules of time and space no longer applied.

The two ponies circled around in the air as the tension grew between them. Twilight knew she had to be careful with her attacks for she was no longer fighting a faceless enemy, but instead she was fighting Luna. She could only hope that her plan would work.

“Your move, Nightmare Moon.” Twilight watched her opponent as her mind carefully chose her first attack.

“I am a cockatrice. Turning its enemies to stone with just a look.” A dark blue creature flowed off of Nightmare Moon's horn as it twisted into the mythical cockatrice.

“I am a mirror reflecting the cockatrice's stare freezing it in its tracks.” A purple mirror lit up the space as it shined with the stare generated by the blue animal.

“I am a misbehaving filly who shatters the mirror.” Another construct took center stage as it placed a mighty buck directly into the center of Twilight's mirror. With a loud crash shards of mirror showered down on the two warring princesses.

Twilight shielded herself with her wings as she returned to the game at hoof. “I am his parent. I discipline and nurture the child.” A loving mother appeared before the filly calming the violence in his heart.

“Well then I am disease. I ravage the mother's body bringing her great pain and suffering. It is I who sends her to an early grave.” Nightmare Moon laughed as her construct's eyes lost all since of happiness.

Twilight knew she had to take a different tactic if she was going to be victorious, but what could stand against Nightmare Moon. “I am the Sun bringing both warmth and life to the Earth.” Twilight stood tall as her words filled the room. Shining over the young alicorn, the magnificent Sun formed behind her.

“Even at the end of your life you stand as one of Celestia's students. You will regret siding with my sister. It doesn't matter though, I was just about to end this little display anyway. I am a black hole that swallows the Sun and all matter around it.” The Sun was suddenly ripped apart sending bursts of energy through the air. The massive black hole had stolen every source of light of the once glorious Sun.

Twilight felt her body slowly slide toward the ever growing vortex as she let out a mighty roar. “I am hope!”

Nightmare Moon froze as sweat dripped down her face. What could beat hope? The alicorn frantically paced in the air as she drew a blank “I have nothing.”

“It is over Nightmare Moon. Now as we agreed, I now rule the dreamworld, and you are no longer welcomed here.” Twilight quickly took control of the room as they returned to Luna's beautiful garden.

“I have a better idea. It is clear that I have chosen the wrong vessel to aid me in my victory. So why don't I just take yours.” The nightmares ripped away from Luna's body and erupted toward Twilight. Leaping backwards Twilight quickly found herself entwined by the vines of the forest lurking below. She was unable to move as the shadowy creature engulfed her in its cold embrace. Twilight fought hard, but ultimately succumbed to the nightmares' will. Her eyes turned black as her very being twisted into a dark abomination of her former self.

“All will bow to the glory of Nightmare Twilight!”

“No Twilight, you have to beat it. You have to stay strong.” Luna looked up at the monstrosity towering over her as she attempt to stand from her wounds. “Let her go. You want me. Please take me.”

Nightmare Twilight turned to the lunar princess and laughed. “You are still alive? I will make short work of you.” Luna frantically raced back and forth as the ground around her rumbled and churn as the tree and roots slither around her body. Before she could react Luna gave out her final breath as the foliage tightened around her squeezing out her last bit of life.

Nightmare Twilight disappeared with a powerful burst of black energy reemerging in the grand hall of Celestia's castle. What should have been a beautiful reunion between friends turned into a scene painted with devastation. Nightmare Twilight made easy work of the royal guard as she made her way to the only pony left that could stand in her way. Celestia and Rainbow Dash waited in anticipation as they heard the path of destruction leading straight to their door. Then it was silent as the door exploded from its hinges with a loud eruption. As the dust settled the two mares watched the doorway surprised to find nothing. Celestia vigilantly stepped forward as a faint whisper manifested behind her. Spinning around she watched in horror as Rainbow Dash collapsed to the floor. Nightmare Twilight stood over her friend's corpse as she leisurely pulled a phantom blade through Rainbow's still warm body.

“Twilight no. It is not too late. You have to stop this, or I will.” Celestia was steadfast against her former student as her request for peace was shattered with a powerful blast of dark magic. Celestia had defended Equestria from the nightmares before, but this time she wasn't sure if she was able to defeat them. Not only was Twilight far more powerful than Luna when it came to magic, but Twilight was almost a daughter to her. Celestia couldn't let that stop her from doing what must be done. Once more she had to put her love aside for the betterment of her kingdom. Deep in her heart she could feel the cracks forming inside as she returned fire on her favorite student. Celestia's attacks proved more and more futile as Nightmare Twilight absorbed everything she threw at her. In her tired state Celestia let down her guard just enough for a single attack to find its target sending her crashing to the cold marble floor.

“Oh Celestia. To think I once looked up to you.” Mercilessly Nightmare Twilight continued her assault on the downed princess stomping out any spark of life left in Celestia's eyes. The rulers of Equestria were gone, and no pony could stop the nightmares now. Heading out side Twilight flew into the morning light eclipsing the Sun with her evil aura. Shouting in her royal voice she commanded her newly acquired kingdom to gaze at her beauty. Every pony in Equestria soon found themselves kneeling in fear at their new queen, Nightmare Twilight.

“So do you think it bought it?”

“I hope so Rainbow. I couldn't see why my plan wouldn't have worked.” Twilight stretched her hooves as she picked herself off of the cold castle floor. Personally she was getting tired of waking up in random locations, but at least this was her last. Twilight looked around as Celestia Luna returned from the dream scape having completed their part.

“It is done. The nightmares have been safely hidden away deep in the world of dreams.” Celestia gently nodded at Twilight as she walked over to her side. “It was a brilliant idea to trap the nightmares in its own personal dreamworld. Hopefully it will be lost in its own desires.”

“Oh, I can only imagine what the nightmares would desire.” Rainbow Dash shuttered as she thought of the horrible things that must be happening in that dream. “I have to hand it to you Twilight. Using yourself as bait to draw out the nightmares from Luna and then having Celestia waiting in the wings ready to attack was pretty cool.”

Luna stepped forward while Celestia slightly signaled for Rainbow's silence. “I wish to thank you Twilight Sparkle. A lesser mare would have succumbed to the nightmares' awesome might. If you wouldn't have risk your life for mine, I might have done something unthinkable as Nightmare Moon. I also wish to thank you as well Rainbow Dash, your bravery and loyalty was vital to my safety.” Luna grabbed Twilight and Rainbow Dash in a heartfelt embrace. Both mares had been through a lot, and were more than happy to welcome a friendly hug.

“I am sorry I have to break up this lovely moment, but Luna and I must make our leave. I am afraid the damage to the dream realm will require much of our time and attention. Your services to the kingdom and to our friendship will never be forgotten. Thank you Princess Twilight Sparkle and the most honorable Rainbow Dash for all of your help.” Celestia and Luna disappeared off into the castle leaving Rainbow and Twilight alone with there thoughts.

“So we did it. I guess.” Rainbow Dash shot Twilight a friendly smile as she nervously looked back to her hooves.

“It would appear that this time we actually did. Well at least I am pretty sure this time is real.” Twilight slyly gestured with her head toward the open balcony door as she alluringly walked outside. “Hey Rainbow. Do you still want to go to that convention?” Twilight sat down on the cold metal floor of the spire as Rainbow Dash lightly sat next to her.

“You know Twi. I have already seen it. Instead I think I would rather be here enjoying the morning with you.” Rainbow paused and then slowly slid her flank closer to Twilight's. Than a little closer until the two mares were pressed tightly against one another. Rainbow Dash look out over the balcony as she sneakily leaned over to Twilight's ear and whispered a single phrase. Twilight shot her a quick glance as her face turned a red hue. Frozen in place she was met with another surprise as Rainbow placed a tiny peck on her check. Time seemed to stand still for the two mares as they looked out over the stunning city of Canterlot. Their adventure had drawn to an end as a their reality shimmered in the morning sun.
