Rainbow Dash Tries to Write a Novel
A lack of inspiration drove me to write this
Load Full Story“Hm…”
Rainbow Dash stood over a piece of parchment with a quill in her mouth. She was prepared to write a story and had sat herself in her living room to brainstorm. She bent down and twisted her head to bring the tip of the quill down. Before it touched the parchment, Rainbow thought better of it and growled in frustration.
“Why can’t I think of anything! Imagination, why do you not work?!”
Rainbow slid her hooves down her face. “Ugh”
She dropped the quill beside the parchment and flew out one of her open windows. She started her journey to find a source of inspiration. Her first destination was Sweet Apple Acres.
Rainbow soared past Ponyville and reached Applejack’s farm in just a few minutes. As she passed the gates, she slowed to a halt and landed in front of Applejack’s barn. She walked up to the barn doors and started pushing against them in an effort to open it.
Her efforts resulted in nothing but disappointment. Rainbow Dash then grabbed the handle to the doors and pulled back, the doors easily moving on their hinges.
“Huh, I didn’t know Applejack’s barn door swung that way.”
Dash stepped inside and inspected the barn. She found nothing of interest that could produce inspiration.
“Ah’m, Rainbow Dash, what ya’ doing in my barn?”
Applejack stood at the doorway of the barn. Dash realized she forgot to close the door on her way in.
“Uhh, I was just looking for something to bring me inspiration.”
“And what do ya’ think you’re gonna find in my barn?”
Dash shrugged and stepped outside. Applejack followed her on the way out and closed the large wooden doors.
“Why don’t ya’ go to Fluttershy’s place? I’m sure she has some sort o’ au naturale inspiration for ya’.”
Rainbow Dash nodded and took off in the air towards Fluttershy’s cottage near the Everfree forest and yelled back behind her, “Thank you Applejack!”
Rainbow Dash streaked towards Fluttershy’s small hovel. She forgot to slow down and slammed right through a window. Luckily the window was made of dioxygen so she was not hurt upon impact.
She smacked into the ground with a soft thud and slid face-first across Fluttershy’s floor.
“Oh- Rainbow, I’m so sorry! Are you bleeding?”
Dash’s face was still smudged on Fluttershy’s floor. Dash raised a hoof.
“It’s not my first time, I’m good.”
Dash peeled her face from the ground and gasped when she saw Fluttershy.
“Fluttershy! You’re not wearing anything!”
Fluttershy instinctively lowered herself and hid behind her mane.
“I’m- I’m sorry! I- wait what.”
Dash pointed an accusing hoof at Fluttershy.
“You’re not wearing anything!”
Fluttershy pulled herself back up and raised an eyebrow.
“Are you okay Rainbow Dash? We almost never wear any clothing, it’s perfectly natural.”
Dash brought herself to her hooves and sneered, “Lie, I’m always covered in a thin veil of awesome; Twilight is always covering herself with a book whenever I occasionally visit her at night; Applejack has her stetson; Rarity wears dresses all the time, and Pinkie Pie covers herself up with frosting whenever I hang out with her alone.”
Fluttershy facehoofed.
“Okay Rainbow Dash, I’ll be back in a minute.”
Fluttershy left the room and that left Rainbow Dash to slink around the room she crash landed in. Dash searched every cranny of the room and concluded the room to be Fluttershy’s dining room. She concluded this based on the fact that a table and some chairs sat in the corner.
She crawled on her belly up to the table and slowly lifted her head over the surface. A small white paper sat on the tabletop. Dash slapped a hoof onto it and pulled it to her to read.
“Good Dragon, toys to make fantasies come true. Huh, I didn’t know Fluttershy was into that kind of stuff.”
At that moment Fluttershy decided to walk in and immediately turned a bright crimson. She once again hid behind her mane, except this time she was wearing a maid uniform that included a skirt that ended at her flank.
“Rainbow Dash! That’s jus- uh - just a receipt for my roleplaying set! Yes! I like to roleplay in Dungeons and Drakons!”
Rainbow Dash pondered it for a second and shrugged.
“That’s kind of nerdy Fluttershy, anyways, you must wear that outfit pretty often.”
Fluttershy shoved her face into the ground and blocked her face with her hooves to try and to hide what little embarrassment had not escaped.
“I mean- You keep this place pretty clean and you must take this role playing thing pretty seriously if you dress up for cleaning.”
Fluttershy did not respond and kept her head buried into the floor.
“I see you won’t be able to help me right now. Well, have fun Fluttershy!”
Dash hopped out through the window she had crashed through and took off towards Rarity’s boutique.
Rainbow Dash paid extra special attention in stopping before reaching Rarity’s house. She landed without a hitch and rapped at the door.
“Hey door -you’re a bore- so open up before ya get gored!”
The door creaked open and Rarity’s head poked out.
“What ever are you doing to my door, darling?”
“Nothing, nothing at all!”
Dash gave Rarity a small grin that said otherwise.
“Rarity, do you know any places or have anything I can use to get inspiration?”
“Perhaps, what do you need inspiration for?”
Dash twiddled her hooves and nervously replied, “Just some personal stuff that’s all.”
Rarity stared at Dash for a second and looked around the inside of her boutique.
“Okay, Sweetiebell must be in her room.”
Rarity waved a hoof to motion to follow her. Rainbow Dash followed closely behind Rarity until they reached a small door. A small key enveloped in magic levitated down from the top of the frame and unlocked the door. The key returned to its little hiding spot and Rarity motioned for Dash to step in.
As soon as Dash stepped in, Rarity closed the door and said, “Have fun darling! Feel free to use anything you might need!”
Dash flicked on a small light on the wall and observed her surroundings. She was at the top of a flight of stairs that led down into Rarity’s basement. However, this basement was no normal basement. Rather, it was filled with various objects with unknown use to Dash.
Dash trotted down the stairs and started poking everything with a hoof. The first thing she found was a harness and pulley system of some sort. She could not decipher what it was for and so continued her examinations of various objects.
The next thing she found was a red ball attached to a elastic band and a full body suit made up of some shiny black rubbery looking material. Dash’s face instantly brightened at realizing what it was.
“It’s a spy costume! Awesome!”
She picked it up, inspected how to put it on, then finally donned it after finding out how to slip it on. She felt something was wrong with the bottom part of her suit and realized that a small zipper on her underside was left unzipped.
“Better fix that!”
She zipped the suit up there and in various other places that seemed quite odd, especially since it’s supposed to cover her entirely. The suit itself constricted the area around her wings and made it difficult to move them. It was quite a tight fitting costume.
She paid no heed to the rest of the things in the basement and trotted back up the stairs. She walked through the door and on her way out the entrance of Rarity’s house, she called out her goodbyes.
“I’m going to borrow this Rarity! I’ll make sure to return it once I’m done!”
Rarity responded back from another room.
“Alright, have fun darling! You must tell me all about it once you finish!”
Dash happily strolled out of Rarity’s house and started towards Sugarcube Corner to find even more inspiration for her story.
Dash trotted down the road, only a few buildings from Sugarcube Corner. For some reason ponies kept staring at her funny and some even put their hooves over their foal’s eyes. Dash wondered if it was something with her hair and shrugged it off.
She was only a few steps away from the door inside when Cloudchaser swooped down and frantically questioned her.
“Rainbow Dash! What are you doing, have you finally snapped?!”
Dash looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
“What are you talking about Cloudchaser? I’m just going to surprise Pinkie in my spy costume and then have her help me find some more inspiration!”
Cloudchaser looked stump.
“Wait- you thin- Oh Celestia this is perfect!”
Cloudchaser fell on her back and cackled.
“So- haha - you thin-”
“Hey Rainbo- Oooh - I see you’re finally ready to take me up on my offer Dashie!”
Pinkie popped out of her door and stared at Dash in her costume.
“Uh, what offer was that Pinkie?”
“To make cupcakes of course!”
Dash shrugged, “Okay, as long as it helps me find some inspiration.”
Pinkie waggled her eyebrows, “Oh, I know you’ll be pretty inspired once I’m done with you.”
Cloudchaser was still laughing like a madmare as Pinkie dragged Dash inside, past the counter, through a door and down a set of stairs to her basement.
Pinkie’s basement was fairly well lit by multiple candles strewn across the floor. She led Dash to one of those harness things that Rarity also had.
“Okay! You get ready and I’ll go get my suit on!”
Before Dash could respond, Pinkie Pie already ran up the stairs and disappeared from sight. Dash just looked at the harness and wondered what exactly she was supposed to do. After a minute of contemplating spending time role playing or whatever Pinkie wanted them to do, she decided to just leave.
Dash trotted up the stairs and opened the door to find Pinkie wearing a suit almost exactly like her own, except for the fact that Pinkie’s was colored hot pink.
“Dashie! Where do you think you’re going! We can’t make cupcakes unless you aren’t strapped in!”
Dash raised an eyebrow at that and replied, “Well, I’m just looking for something to see or something to do real quick that would get my creative juices running.”
“Well, more than just your creative juices will be running as soon as you taste some of my filling Dashie!”
“I promise I’ll come to help you bake tomorrow Pinkie.”
Pinkie shoved her face into Dash’s as close she could without contact and whispered, “Pinkie promise?”
Dash pulled her head back quickly and started moonwalking out of Sugarcube Corner.
“Suuure… I pinkie promise.”
“Oki Doki Loki! See you tomorrow Dashie!”
Dash stopped and quickly slid off her suit. She placed it on the counter and asked, “Oh and Pinkie, can you return this to Rarity for me? Some people outside were giving me weird looks when I had it on.”
“Of course! In fact, I’ll just hold on to it until tomorrow!”
Dash missed that last part because she had already walked out the door and started her flight towards Twilight's crystal tree palace.
Dash trotted inside Twilight’s palace and found her in the library section.
Twilight noticed Dash’s arrival and greeted her, “Hey Rainbow Dash, do you need anything?”
Dash nodded.
“I need inspiration Twilight! I’m trying to write a story, but I can’t think of anything to write about!”
Twilight put a hoof to her chin and pondered for a moment, before responding, “Well, what have you done today?”
Rainbow’s face squinted in concentration as she recounted the day’s events. She opened her eyes again to find a shocked Twilight.
“What’s wrong Twilight? Did I say something wrong?”
One of Twilight’s hind legs twitched slightly as she started walking away from Dash and towards her personal quarters. A book with no title floated in front of Twilight as she backed away.
“Uh, are you alright Twilight? What’s that book for?”
“I- I- I think you should go back home to find inspiration. Yes! I heard that leaving and not looking in my window for the next hour would be a perfect way to come up with an idea…”
Twilight disappeared from view and the clip clop of hooves can be heard as she ran off to her room.
Dash shrugged and walked out of Twilight’s palace and then flew back to her own house.
Dash finally arrived back home and once again stood over the parchment.
“Hm… Ugh- I still can’t think of anything! Nothing interesting happened at all today!”
She let herself crumple onto the floor and she laid her head on her hooves and closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and let out a loud sigh.
“Oh well, there’s always time tomorrow to try again…”
