Long ago, Celestia and Luna were not the only ones able to control the cycles of the sun and moon. Sunshade the Great, Alicorn King many, many years ago had the power to control the cycles, and bore the sole responsibility of both raising the sun, and raising the moon. Although many sought to dethrone Sunshade, very few came close enough to do any damage, but those who did, were removed and dealt with by Sunshade's noble and elite Shadow Guard. This is the story of the pony who actually succeeded.

Sunshade the Great was a tall, muscular Alicorn with a dark grey coat, and a pale mane. Sunshade paced around his elaborate throne room. Gold lined, and intricate, his throne sat right in the middle, where his council of advisers could easily hear and see him.

"Your Majesty, Canterlot food storages are at a low, in the last winter, not enough crops were grown to see us through to the spring, so we had to use the reserves. We need more food, and in order for that, we need more sunlight. Could you lengthen the day for a few weeks to allow us to grow more?" asked his chief consumption adviser.

"And what of the rest of the ponies? if we lengthen the day, then there will be less time for them to sleep! Then jobs will not be completed on time, and all Equestria will come short an all its needs! we cannot stray from the current cycles, and I just simply cannot spare any more sunlight! if you need more food, then you will just have to get more ponies to work on making food." replied the King.

"I can spare a few ponies, perhaps you could use some of them to help?" said the Adviser of Technology.

The meeting came to a close soon after, but Sunshade and his faithful assistant Discord remained.

"Your Majesty, is there something on your mind?"

"Yes, but do not forget your place Discord, your are already on thin ice from the last incident."

"Of Course your Majesty, I just thought that it may help if you shared your great burden with somepony else..."

"Perhaps...perhaps..."

"Wonderful, your Maj-"

"I will go speak with my Librarian, maybe he can help me with my problems."

Sunshade left, and Discord, watching him go, fumed at the arrogance of his King.
