Darkness My Old Friendby Nostromos_of_NewGenesisChaptersSound of SilenceAn Audience with the Princess of FriendshipPerchance to DreamSound of SilenceChapter 01: Sound of Silence How long had it been since she'd seen this night sky? Not for an age. The last she'd seen of it, she was a small child and so full of imagination. Those were innocent times, naive times. They were times when she could see the stars take the form of animals and play about the sky. They were times when she felt at home in her own dreams, instead of feeling the need to hide within the nightmares of others. Where had such sense of wonder gone? She began to ponder this, but set it aside in her mind. Now wasn't the time to rediscover her innocence. Getting caught up in the scene around her wasn't easy though. She had missed the rolling fields painted with brushstrokes of night. Long had she forgotten the stunning beauty of ghostly Nightglow Blossoms blanketing the hill to mimic the stars in the sky. Fireflies soothingly blinked in hypnotic rhythm, begging her to get up and chase them with laughter. The smell of the earth, so reminiscent of a pony she seldom liked to think of, beckoned her to roll around in the grass like a filly. Oh to be a filly again and envelope herself in this once wonderful landscape of her own making. No, not of just her own making. Such a thought violently ripped her from her mental wandering and back into the present. The co-architect of this dreamy vista sat across from her. Amidst the pale-glowing blossoms sat a silhouette of the deepest black. Smoldering eyes of green gazed back at her in withheld fury. Its inky-black figure resembled a pony, yet it constantly swirled and shifted like the surface of a stream. On its flank, the image of a black moon greedily sucked in the silky light that barely illuminated the flower-swept hills around them. Being in its — no her — presence made Luna's heart beat hard and fast enough for her body quiver. She was scared and nervous, but there was an odd peace that waited just below such paralyzing emotions. Being near this pony-shaped shadow felt deliciously familiar. It felt like coming back to a home she'd nearly forgotten. It felt like seeing her sister's near blinding smile after a thousand years of heartbreaking loneliness. She imagined this is what it felt like to see your mother again after being apart for so very long. How had she gone so long without noticing that she yearned for this familiar presence? “Hello Darkness” she greeted. Her voice was raspy and breathless with nerves. Her body quaked again, and her heart lurched when the shadow's eyes narrowed. She prayed to the stars above that Twilight's advice would prove true. “Hello, my darling Luna” Darkness answered back. Author's Note There's the opening chapter of my hopefully not-so-long story. I do want to establish a few things before we continue. I added the "Alternate Universe" tag because I plan on introducing themes and backstory that I wouldn't even entertain as canon. I do, however, think these concepts would be pretty awesome regardless. So, don't think that everything you read in this story is my "head canon". Also, though this is mostly a Luna story, there will be some Celestia-centric bits. I'm not in the camp that wants to paint her as a dictator, or overly controlling. I actually think she has a big heart.... perhaps too big? Anyway, this is the last long(ish) note I plan to write until the final chapter. I hope you enjoy the story! An Audience with the Princess of FriendshipChapter 02: An Audience with the Princess of Friendship Finally, after a whole day of trying (and failing) to organize her friends into properly moving her into her new castle, Twilight had time to herself. Celebrating the defeat of Tirek had delayed the move for two days before someone finally realized that Twilight had nowhere to properly lay her head down and rest. That fact instantly sent Rarity on a three day fit over properly turning the new castle into a home. Not just any home mind you! No friend of hers —who just so happened to be a princess no less— was going to settle for just any old interior to live in. There was no stopping the fashionista once she pulled idea-after-idea from her creative head to give the castle “some life”. Honestly, Twilight didn't even know half of the things Rarity did to the place. Rarity had gotten through showing her the dining area before literally collapsing onto her face and falling asleep. Twilight didn't tell anyone, but she suspected a certain princess of the night to be responsible for that. The thought brought a smile to her face, and it only grew when she thought about Applejack and Rainbow Dash. Both ponies had volunteered to help move the furniture inside and rearrange it to Rarity's wishes. The job had started out simple enough, but as the furniture grew in weight, so did their competitive natures. Before long, the two competed to see who could fill the room to Rarity's specification the fastest. Everything spiraled out of control from there. AJ had hogtied an entire sitting room's worth of furniture together and flung them into place. She very nearly confirmed Twilight's theories on Earth Pony magic by somehow managing to land every piece of furniture in place. If only Rarity hadn't wanted the cushy, red chair a little to the left... Her rainbow-maned friend wasn't any less impressive. Not to be outdone by AJ's legendary rodeo skills, Rainbow Dash haphazardly shoved every piece of furniture into the dining room in record time. Right before Rarity could nearly scream in outrage, the pegasus shot around the room in a whirlwind of color and feathers. In a jaw-dropping three passes, she put everything into place. Rarity nearly flipped when there athletic friend barely caught a dinner plate from falling to the ground with one of her dexterous wings. Then there was her brother, Shining Armor. He had never voiced his disappointment in missing her original move to Ponyville and refused to miss this one as well. To help with the heavy lifting and fine details, Shining had brought an entire regiment of guard pegasi and unicorns. Rarity had her hooves full getting them to put paintings in proper rooms and treating decorative pieces with care. AJ and Rainbow nearly died laughing when a recruiter for the Royal Guard handed Rarity his card. Apparently they were always looking to add more horns in the Crystal Empire's Guard. Cadance and Pinkie had taken on the task of staffing the castle with enough help to hold Twilight over until word got out about Twilight's new castle. The crystal princess made sure the cleaning service was in place after witnessing how messy Twilight can be. Poor Spike just wasn't enough to clean an entire castle during one of Twilight's infamous study sessions. Pinkie Pie personally interviewed the cooking staff. That went about as well as expected. Bloated after eating mountains of sweets, Pinkie gave five cooks her seal of approval before passing out into a cake-induced coma for the afternoon. Every one of her friends hadn't hesitated to help her into her new home. The thought made her heart feel warm, and made her smile softly. Where would she be without those crazy ponies? Her gaze ran over the walls of her room, each a bookshelf filled with books. Every book keeper, library, and author in Equestria had donated a few books to her after hearing about the destruction of her old home. The outpouring of support for the infamous bookworm made her smile grow bittersweet. Her eyes landed upon a lone acorn that sat quietly upon her bookshelf-dresser. Tap Tap Tap The sudden noise brought Twilight back from her thoughts, and drew her to the window. Her eyebrows dropped heavily upon her face. She distinctly recalled Fluttershy explaining to the local birds about the difficulties of nesting in a tree made of crystals. What could they possibly want now!? She stomped over to the window and threw it open, ready to shoo away any birds dumb enough to be annoying at this hour. What she found, however, was a pair of amused, cyan eyes gazing at her. “Good evening, Twilight Sparkle” Luna greeted the open-mouthed pony. She barely held back a laugh as Twilight shook her head to remove her shock. “P-Princess Luna,” Twilight blinked, “what are you doing here?” The princess of the night dipped her head and chuckled softly. “I wished to see you.” “So you knocked on my window instead of the front door?” Twilight flinched and nearly slapped her hoof to her face. Of all the times to let her tongue slip, she chose to do it with Luna. It really had been a long day... Luna smirked. “Having plenty of experience with castles, I knew you wouldn't hear me if I had knocked on the door”. The princess smiled when Twilight chuckled at the joke. “Well, I guess that true” Twilight answered. “So, what can I do for you Princess Luna?” Twilight's small smile dropped into a concerned frown. All mirth left Luna's face, and her eyes looked everywhere but at Twilight. “I, uh... came to request.... I mean, if you're not busy-” Luna began to babble. “Luna,” Twilight gently interrupted, “would you like to come inside?” Her smile returned when Luna sighed and nodded bashfully. The two princesses entered Twilight's room in silence. Twilight announced that she'd go make them some tea, which gave Luna time to collect her thoughts. Whatever was bothering the standoffish mare was enough to bring her to Twilight's window to seek help. The newly dubbed Princess of Friendship prepared herself for the worst. Luna, however, took the opportunity to admire Twilight's new sleeping quarters. Aside from every nook and cranny serving as a shelf for her growing library of books, she also had plush cushions sitting about for reading on. A humble telescope stood in the corner, waiting for a clear night to be used. Pushing a touch of magic to her horn, Luna moved a writing desk to the center of the floor. Using the greatest care, she moved the writing utensils and a short stack of parchment that sat on the table to a nearby dresser. She smiled at an old, warm memory of entertaining Celestia for evening tea in the old castle's library. When Twilight returned with a tray of tea firmly gripped in her magic, she found Luna patiently waiting for her. She spotted the makeshift table, and blushed a little. “Sorry, I haven't had a chance to get much furniture for entertaining guests in my room.” “Yet plenty of time to restock on the full Encyclopedia Canterloticca set.” Luna glanced to a shelf within reach of Twilight's bed with a line of books bearing their name in elaborate, gold lettering. “I believe that's the edition printed only a year ago in Canterlot, and” Luna squinted with a smile playing at her lips, “a staggering set of field guides and journals by some impressive explorers.” Twilight saw Luna's poking fun at her, and raised the princess a cheeky remark. “As Rarity would say, 'a girl has to have her priorities'” Twilight playfully mimicked her friend before sharing a laugh with Luna. “Trust me, I understand. When Celestia and I lived in our old castle, they used to say the study was my real bedroom and my chambers were only included in the floor-plan for appearance's sake.” Luna's smile broadened over her tea. Those were the happy memories she readily recalled and kept close to her heart. Twilight, however, couldn't help but be curious. “Is that where you practiced dreamwalking?” “Ah, hoping to find something on the subject in those dusty old books?” Luna smirked and took a dainty sip of her warm drink. It had a hint of mint, and an energizing aroma. Apparently, Twilight intended to do some studying for a few hours tonight. A flash of excitement sparkled through Twilight's eyes. “It's just so rare of an ability, I can't help but be curious.” Luna gave a slightly apologetic look. “There are no books on the subject, I'm afraid. Everything known about dreamwalking is passed down through spoken word” Luna said. She smiled despite Twilight's disappointed frown. “Though I cannot teach you an ability you were not born with, perhaps I can teach you how to master your dreams and protect them from outside influence instead?” “That'd be wonderful!” Twilight's mood instantly brightened. The realm of dreams was a complete mystery even to Celestia. “In exchange,” Luna stopped her expression of gratitude by raising a hoof, “you can tell me about Starswirl's spell that you completed.” Twilight deflated at the mention of that particular spell. “O-okay, I don't see any harm in that” Twilight forced out. She glanced to either side and smiled tightly at Luna's stony expression. “Yes, you do” Luna set her teacup down after taking another sip. “And the question you want to ask, but are to nervous to ask, actually brings us to why I came to see you this evening.” Twilight felt a bit of shame at being caught in her discomfort. Hoping to make up for it, she said, “if there's anything I can do to help, princess, you know I will”. “As you've proven to all of Equestria time and again” Luna added in hopes of clarifying that she wasn't angry. “This visit, however, is more me seeking advice from a friend who knows more about friendship then I do.” She was glad when Twilight simply nodded — despite her desire to refute her expertise in friendship. Twilight almost instinctive desire to encourage her gave Luna a piece of the courage she was seeking. Perhaps hearing what she already knew from a trusted friend would give her the push needed to do what must be done. “To be clear, Twilight, I would like this to stay between the two of us” Luna said. A flash of understanding in Twilight's eyes told the night princess that she knew who she was speaking about. Celestia, Faust bless her loving heart, was the last pony Luna wanted catching wind of this. She already suspected her sister of planning something stupid, regardless of her loving intensions. Twilight voiced her promise to secrecy. “You have my word.” Luna paused to give her a thankful smile before speaking. “I have a friend that I hurt a long time ago” she started. “We were friends since I was but a little filly. She taught me so many things, and I believe she loved me much like a mother would. However, I returned her love by hurting her terribly.” Luna's expression, which had been filled with fond serenity, scrunched in regret. “When I should have drawn closer to her,” Luna continued, “I instead pushed her away. I abandoned her in favor of some false image of purity that I thought I had to pursue” Luna looked at Twilight with damp eyes. “How does one even begin to apologize to a friend you hurt so badly so long ago?” The Princess of Friendship was stunned by the confession. Twilight opened her mouth to say something, but instead chose to think back on her time with her friends. Fighting with your friends was a part of life, and sometimes the conflict had run deeper than she first thought. Heck, she still suspected some tension between Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy. When she finally answered, Twilight chose her words carefully. “I think... you start where anyone would: say you're sorry” Twilight answered after some thought. “From what you've told me, your friend sounds very kind and loyal. If my time with my friends, especially Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, has taught me anything, it's that a true friend like that will accept an honest, heartfelt apology.” Luna nodded slowly, soaking in the advice. Admittedly, part of her was skeptical and it showed on her face. “After having so many adventures with my friends, I've come to realize a lot about friendship” Twilight said. The night princess leaned in, urging Twilight to continue. Twilight put a hoof to her chin, as she thought back to all of her time spent in Ponyville. “Even though each of my friends and I represented a specific Element of Harmony, we often show more than just one through our friendship” Twilight revealed with a smile. “In order to maintain a friendship, it takes all of the elements working together.” “How does that apply to my apology?” Luna asked. “When you apologize, be honest.” Twilight laughed a little at how simple her first point was. “You know what you did was hurtful, tell her why you did it and why it was wrong of you to do it. By trying to understand how you made her feel, you show kindness towards them, that you genuinely care about how they feel. Your desire to want their friendship again shows loyalty to them, as well as a commitment to be a better, truer friend. Be generous in your offer to make it up to her, and the last part is the most important.” Luna took all of that in before asking, “What's that?” “Don't be afraid to laugh at the happy memories that the two of you have shared.” Twilight smiled brightly at her last bit of advice. Looking back, Twilight and her friends got into the strangest of situations, but she couldn't think of any other group of ponies to be friends with. “And what of magic, where does that element fit into all of this?” Luna lifted her nearly empty teacup to her lips to hide a cheeky smirk. Twilight smiled in amusement and gave Luna a half-lidded stare. “Nice try. Save a trick like that for Discord, because it won't work on me.” Luna shrugged. “Worth a shot regardless.” The pair shared a laugh before Luna felt a tug deep within herself. “Well, I must return to my nightly duties” Luna said, as she set her empty cup down and stood up. She gave Twilight a courteous bow. “Thank you Twilight Sparkle, you have given me much to think about.” “I'm always willing to help a friend.” The purple unicorn gave Luna a genuine smile. The sentiment and importance of her words were not lost on Luna. She returned Twilight's smile with one of her own before bidding her a good night. With a beat of her wings, she was off into the night air and steadily headed for the castle in Canterlot. Indeed, her talk with Twilight had confirmed some of the things she already knew, and enlightened her on a perspective she had not thought of. She had planned to confront her friend tonight, but after Twilight's advice, perhaps it was best to wait until she had her apology ready. If there was one thing Luna wasn't good at, it was speaking deeply while in the moment. That was Celestia's talent — to speak elegantly and clearly at a moment's notice. It was one of many talents that Luna wished she shared. “How long has it been since I've had a dream of my own?” Luna mused to herself. She climbed high into the sky and into the clouds, where she felt closest to the stars. The last time she'd enjoyed her very own dream was well over a thousand years ago, just after the defeat of Discord. That dreamscape filled with flowers and watched by the moon was a vista she missed deeply. But she was waiting for her there. Too afraid to face her oldest friend, Luna would simply float in the space between the dreams of others. If someone was suffering in their dreams, she would come to their aid. She'd never openly admit it, but she would peek into the dreams of others to pass the time. It wasn't something she was proud of, but how else was she to occupy herself during her dreamwalks? That was no excuse of course, especially when her reason was a fear of having hateful words thrown at her. Did she deserve any less though? She had done something terrible to a friend who had given her so much. It was a miracle that Celestia had forgiven her, but such was her nature. This friend, however, wasn't so big-hearted. Luna was positive her friend would have some choice words for her, many of which are unacceptable in proper company. “I must be ready,” Luna said to herself when she neared the castle, “for when I dream, she will be waiting for me.” Author's Note You know, I wonder if the Mane Six are going to act as a "Friendship Council" now that they have a shared throne room. Can you imagine conventions being held in Ponyville with a Friendship Panel? The idea sounds like a prime opportunity for pony shenanigans. If anyone wants to take that idea and run with it, feel free. I'd read that story. Hope you enjoyed, see you next time! Perchance to DreamChapter 03: Perchance to Dream It had been two weeks after Luna's audience with Twilight before she felt that the time was right. However, she had ignored the state of the castle's staff while lost in her thoughts for all that time. For the sixth night in a row, she'd canceled night court in favor of secluding herself in her room for the better part of the evening. If she wasn't locked in her study or aimlessly wandering the Dream Realm, then she was walking the quiet castle gardens with orders to not disturb her. Celestia had approached her on more than one occasion after her third night of self-imposed isolation. She didn't want to force Luna to do anything, and she genuinely cared about her little sister. However, it didn't take a level 5 intellect to know what her gentle reminders were silently saying. “Whatever is troubling you, handle it so that we can return to business-as-usual. If not for your own sake, then for the sake of our subjects” was her silent message. It would have driven Luna mad had she not noticed that Celestia always cleared her schedule two hours earlier than usual. Again, it didn't take a genius to know why. The older sister, ever watchful of her beloved younger sibling, wanted to be open in case Luna ever wanted, or needed, to talk. In her own standoffish way, Celestia was still looking out for her, and Luna saw the sweetness in it. It warmed her heart to know that Celestia will always be there for her. There was a part of her, however, that still coiled in annoyance at Celestia's behavior. This was the part of her that made Luna afraid of herself. She'd always been a mare of passion. Every emotion she felt was intense and intoxicating, and the Nightmare had done nothing to cool her short temper. What had helped was her oldest and dearest friend. Darkness had been there in her earliest days — maybe even the moment she was born. She had been there to whisper soothing words into Luna's ear when her irritation threatened to bubble to the surface and explode in all its dark and glorious fury. In her youth, she had failed to see just what her friend was doing to her, guiding her to become. Under her tutelage, Luna had been growing to be as strong, wise, and regal as her sister — if not more so. She had recalled this while drafting her twelfth and fifteenth failed letters to her old friend. The idea to arrange her words using letters was an odd one given to her by Starswirl the Bearded. He had suggested it to work out her words when her tongue felt too stuck, and the right words too far away. To this day, Luna suspected that the old unicorn had known of the Nightmare that had boiled within her, whispering poison into her heart. That kooky, old unicorn always seemed to know more than he let on. It is that knowledge that made Luna suspicious of when Celestia told her of Starswirl's infamous Unfinished Spell. It just didn't sound like the Starswirl she knew to simply leave a spell unfinished. Even more suspicious was the flimsy reason that “he didn't understand enough about friendship”. When she had enquired further on the issue, Luna felt like she had somehow caught Celestia with her hoof in the cookie jar. Celestia always had a nasty habit of straddling the line between bending the truth and outright lying. With the right words and enough time, she could fool anyone — literally, anyone — into believing anything. She could trick anyone, that is, except Luna. Her older sister was very good at choosing her words, a master if there ever was one. Her ability had saved Equestria from many trials in the early days, and continued to do so. However, who do you think helped her perfect such a craft? None other than Luna herself. Crafting the perfect lie is much like baking a cake, Luna discovered. The key, ironically, is to mostly tell the truth. Then you add in a few touches of vague information without any hint of feeling the need to clarify. Finally, before anyone can think to ask questions, you add a pinch — just a pinch mind you — of your little lie. Ninety percent of the time, it works all the time. Luna hadn't been absolutely certain Celestia had lied about Starswirl's spell until she pressed her on it. The effect was instantaneous. Though her face did not betray her, Celestia's eyes had chosen that moment to stage a coup de'tat. She knew for certain now. Starswirl hadn't given up because he couldn't finish the spell, it was because he didn't want to finish it. That, however, was a separate matter entirely. Coming back to her senses, Luna found herself lightly landing amidst the castle gardens. Tonight was the night she was going to confront her old friend, but she had a bit of business to attend to first — business in the mismatched form of a particular spirit of chaos. A light suddenly shone on the princess, forcing her to shield her eyes. “And what brings the Princess of the Night to her quiet garden on this exceptional night?” A goat face was mere inches from her own, as red-pupiled, yellow eyes gazed at her accusingly over a large pair of aviator sunglasses. “Good evening Discord” Luna greeted with a touch of amusement. The chaotic spirit had donned a pair of navy-blue slacks and a light-blue shirt. On his shirt was a comically large, shiny badge that had Canterlot Police Department engraved into it. Above the etched lettering was a carved image of Celestia dressed as a clown. “I figured I would find you out here.” Discord straightened, and with a snap of his lion paw's fingers, exchanged his guard costume for that of a gardener. “Oh?” He daintily sniffed a flower with an overly sweet smile. “What ever would have given you that idea?” “Considering your love of Nightglow Blossoms,” Luna smirked when Discord's eyes widened. “I knew you'd frequent my little side project here.” “Guilty as charged” Discorded conceded with a flourish of his hands. Discord snapped with his gryphon claw and returned to normal. He then placed his claw and paw behind his head and reclined in midair. “So, I'm out here for the flowers, but what brings the illustrious Mare of the Night out here to her garden?” He smirked and looked at her with one eye open. “And without her regal attire no less! How scandalous...” Luna curtsied in return of his mockery, and basked in the feeling of being without her royal dressings. “I'm out here looking for you, believe it or not.” “My, double scandalous!” Discord dramatically gasped and pretended to faint. His act only got a smirk and a small laugh from Luna. “I want to tell you that the castle's going to get a little chaotic tomorrow.” Her smirk only grew when Discord shot her an interested look. “I won't ask you not to have a little fun with it, but please be mindful of my sister's long-term sanity?” “That boat sailed a long time ago” Discord muttered offhandedly. “Before I go making promises,” Discord coiled around a nearby pegasus statue, “what are you planning on doing?” Luna expected him to be suspicious. If her request itself wasn't suspect enough, then her appearance was enough to raise some questions. Aside from her lack of regal-wear, she hadn't exactly been taking care of herself. In her anxiety, she often forgot to eat and hardly slept. Her eyes were constantly puffy from crying, and her ethereal mane wasn't as pristine as she usually kept it. The princess looked away from the spirit and into the dark sky of the night. “I wish to dream for the first time in well over a thousand years, and I don't think things will be the same once I do.” Discord hummed and stroked his beard in thought. “A dreamwalker that doesn't dream?” Discord raised an eyebrow. “That's not unusual. Knowing the secrets of the Dream Realm can make one paranoid.” Mischief bubbled its way into his gaze, as he leaned in to loom over Luna. “What could possibly be waiting for you in your dreams? That's what I'm curious about.” Discord waited for Luna to take the bait and play along, but the princess only lowered her head and retreated into herself. “Luna?” Silence fell between the two as Luna looked off into the night to gather her words. What she wanted to ask was something a little touchy, personal. An image of her sister's disapproving face popped into her head, but Luna quickly shoved it aside. “Discord, when you apologized to Fluttershy about the whole Tirek incident, how did you get her to forgive you?” Luna gazed at the draconiquus unflinchingly when he gave her a shocked look. “How?” Discord bitterly echoed with a chuckled. He sat down at the foot of the statue, closer to eye-level with Luna. “I had to spill my guts. She deserved that much at least.” He sighed and slumped forward. “It was good-natured of her to even speak to me, but telling her why I did it seemed to help. I told that sweet, little pony things I've never told anyone.” He somberly met Luna's gaze. “We still have a long way to go before we're as close as we were, but we're getting better.” Luna offered the spirit a soft smile. “I'm glad you have a friend so forgiving who you can speak openly with.” “I might have two now” he returned Luna's gentle smile with one of his own. “Well, that put me in a giving mood.” Discord levitated back into the air and stretched. “Very well Luna, I'll try to take it easy tomorrow, but” he paused to point at her, “do be careful. The last thing we need is Celestia dissolving into hysterics.” Luna rolled her eyes and shook her head despite her smile. “Be nice Discord. Sister is still in the process of forgiving you after all. A little good behavior will go a long way.” Discord hummed and shot her a good-natured smirk. “So I take it you won't be accepting my tea-party invitation?” With a burst of his magic, Discord donned an oversized, pink sweater and white skirt. He pushed out his lower lip in a pout, revealing it to be messily covered in bright red lipstick. The princess laughed genuinely for the first time in days at his gag. “I'm afraid I'll have to take a raincheck” she managed to squeak out between giggles. “Aw,” Discord fluttered his heavy eyelashes, as his eyebrows scrunched together. “I was going to have Dream Fluttershy wear bunny ears and serve carrot cake for this one.” “You can save it for some other time. Besides,” Luna started back towards the castle, “if all goes well, you might have another guest to entertain.” Before she departed, she heard Discord say, “I'll hold you to that, Luna”. The castle at night was quiet, but not lifeless. Where the bustling goings-on of the day were missing, fervent study and diligent watchfulness took its place. All while Luna traced the halls of the castle towards her quarters, she did not utter a word. Who was she to break the silence of a sleeping castle? Let them rest, for the morning will bring many trials, and the evening to follow will bring much confusion. All during her journey to her room, night patrols offered the princess an escort. None of them thought she needed it, but their growing concern for their princess pushed them to try and show her that they were there for her. Many of the guards are mares and stallions she hunted fierce creatures with, and facing such challenges forges camaraderie. Much like her sister to her Dawn Guard, Luna's Night Watch had become much like family — extended family at least. This night, however, was different from the rest. Tonight, she wanted to spend a few more moments alone before she faces her most selfish mistake. The door to her quarters appeared before her far too soon. She gazed up at its elaborate etchings of the night sky, with the moon at its center. The stars that had released her from her prison encircled the full moon, forever remembered for their loyalty. Even in her darkest hour, her stars had not abandoned her. She could learn much from them. Luna acknowledged the guards in front of her door and slipped inside. She wasted no time in trotting over to her dresser, where two letters lay sealed and neatly awaiting a reader. One, however, was never to be read at all. Lifting the letter on the left with her magic, she whispered an incantation. Sapphire flames ignited the letter, burning it to ash. The second letter, Luna lifted and crumpled into a ball with her magic. She whispered another incantation and gently blew on the crumpled letter. In a flash, the letter came to life as a bird and flew once around the room before landing atop Luna's hoof once more. “Wait until the sun and moon hang in the sky, then return to Celestia and Celestia alone.” With that, she opened the door to her bedroom's balcony and let the enchanted letter fly out into the world — not to return until the time it was told. Having set everything into place, Luna finally approached her sleeping pillows and laid down upon them. Her bedding was her favorite part of her chambers because of how much thought she put into it. The large pillow that acted as the base of her bedding was plush, but firm enough to hold her. She then surrounded herself with softer pillows for added comfort before finally covering herself with thick blanket. Closing her eyes, Luna let sleep come to her, but not before allowing an ancient magic to flow through her. She regulated her breathing and reached out with her consciousness to a realm beyond her own. Darkness obscured her vision for only a moment before the shadows cleared to show her a familiar sight. The Dream Realm extended outwards before her, a wonder that few beings from the Waking Realm have had the honor to see. Her destination this time, however, was above her head, hanging in the skies of the Dream Realm. A world covered in glowing blossoms, dancing fireflies, and bathed in silky moonlight — a world built by two friends. There, amidst the dreamscape of her childhood, waited a darkness she hadn't seen in a long, long time. For a thousand years she kept her waiting in the very spot where she'd said those fateful words, crafted to harm. There waited her old friend, the Rainbow of Darkness. Author's Note Aaaaaand there's the bombshell. That's right, Luna's old friend is a personification (ponyfication?) of the Rainbow of Darkness. How that works will be explained, so stay tuned because I believe my take is different than usual. For those who may not know what the Rainbow of Darkness is (just in case): http://villains.wikia.com/wiki/Tirek_%28My_Little_Pony%29 Until next time, thank you for reading!
Sound of SilenceChapter 01: Sound of Silence How long had it been since she'd seen this night sky?
