Introduction to a Legend

Hello, dear readers. Do you like tales involving a hero setting out on a journey, meeting new friends, fighting some sort of looming evil force, and learning valuable lessons about life? If so, then you've picked up the right book, although I must warn you, it may not be the way I've described it in some parts. You see, the story you're about to read is one that actually happened, one that I'm sure future generations will call a legend, but I assure you, every single word of this is as close to the truth as possible. This is the story of my daughter, Twilight Sparkle, and her friends, some of the greatest and somewhat unlikely group of heroes this world has ever known, and have also helped shaped the very face of it.

Before we begin, there are a few things I want to explain just for records' sake, the first being the country I live in. Me and my family hail from Equestria, a kingdom that takes up about a sixth of the world's dry land, and is also the land of Ponies. The geography of this country consists mostly of forests, mountains, fields, grasslands, and anything else commonly associated with those features. To the north, there is a frozen wasteland covered in mountains, and to the south, there is a desert that becomes more and more inhospitable the further you travel in that direction. Communities around here range from small rural villages to large bustling cities.

Inhabiting these communities are the three types of Ponies: Unicorn, Pegasus, and Earth Pony. Unicorn is the type that I belong to, as well as anyone related to me. We're Ponies that have horns protruding from our foreheads, though not generally used for fighting, and instead allow us to use magic. Pegasus Ponies, or Pegasi, are Ponies that have a pair of feathered wings on their backs, giving them the ability to fly. Due to their lack of a horn, Pegasi are incapable of performing magic tricks, but they have a different kind of magic in them that allows them to physically touch and move clouds, and thus are able to interact with weather. Earth Ponies are, what some would call, "regular Ponies", in that they have neither a horn nor wings, and have to rely entirely on their own hooves. However, they also have a special kind of magic that allows them to be more at one with the soil and all that grow in it, so they're no different than the other two types.

Next, I want to tell you of something that every single Pony has in common: Cutie-Marks. A Cutie-Mark is a symbol of who a Pony is, literally, for they magically appear on a Pony's flanks when they find something that makes them different from every other Pony. Most find Cutie-Marks that match the specific talents they have, or when they figure out what their destiny is. For example, if a Pony was good at cooking, he or she would be likely to have a picture of cooking utensils on their flanks, or if he or she were good at public speaking, they'd probably have something like an open scroll with letters and a quill for their Cutie-Mark.

As for Twilight Sparkle herself, I want to leave the details for the story, but I can describe a few things about her. At the time this story takes place, Twilight is headed towards her 14th birthday. Her fur coat is a pale mulberry color, her eyes are moderate violet, and her mane is moderate sapphire blue. Through her mane run two streaks of colors, the most visible one being pale rose, and the other one being the same color as her eyes, moderate violet.

Finally, you must be wondering who I am. It should already be obvious to you that I'm the main character's parent, but my name is Twilight Velvet, Twilight Sparkle's mother. Yes, Twilight was named after me, and to avoid confusion, I've opted to go with my last name Velvet. I have to warn you right now that I won't be appearing in this story, nor will my husband, Night Light, and I'll get to the reason why later on. My profession is writing, though I'm still trying to get off the ground with it, but that's not the only reason I'm writing this story. The reason is that I want to record the tale of a living legend for future generations, even if they one day regard it as nothing more than a legend. I want to pass down the lessons and accomplishments of my child so that other children can learn from her, and in turn, help shape the future of the world.

Well, that's all the info you need. Hope you enjoy!
