The sun was high in the cloudless sky, sharing its light with the glimmering streets of the Crystal Empire. The Empire shined under the clear sky, its crystalline streets gorgeously reflecting the sun’s rays. The crystal ponies were beginning to become active in the streets, adding blue, purple, gold, and white lights to the city’s lightshow.
The Crystal Castle loomed over the Empire in all its glory, its magnificent peak shining brightest of all. The crystal guards were already beginning to take their posts, and one of them was steadily making his way towards the throne room, a sapphire colored guard.
Everything shines here. The stallion thought to himself. The streets, the ponies, the castle… Even I give off a gleaming light.
The guard reached the door to the throne room, and placed one of his front hooves on it. But… There is one pony whose light shines brighter than anypony else… Brighter than the Crystal Castle itself.
The stallion pushed open the door, and entered the large crystal throne room. The crystal throne was quite large, and was surrounded with precious gemstones, including its crown jewel, a large amethyst. Atop the throne was a pink, non-crystal alicorn. Her mane was a gradient of gold, lavender, and rose, and her eyes were a matching lavender color. The familiar mare smiled happily as the guard entered the room.
The Crystal Empress, Princess Mi Amore Cadenza… The guard thought wistfully. One of the two non-crystal ponies in the Empire. And yet, she’s the pony who shines the brightest.
“Good morning, Your Majesty!” He greeted Cadence, with a smile and a bow.
“Good morning to you as well, Lapis.” Cadence replied happily.
Lapis rose to his hooves at the foot of her throne. She’s in a pleasant mood, as always. He thought dreamily. “So, I assume you slept well, My Empress?” He asked with a slight tone of sarcasm.
Cadence groaned mockingly. “Of course I did. It’s impossible not to with how much you all pamper me.” She smirked at him. “And I’ve told you a thousand times not to call me ‘Empress.’”
Lapis chuckled light-heartedly. “We just want our Emp-ahem. Our Princess to have a pleasant time in her own castle.” He joked, and then brushed his glimmering lapis-blue mane underneath his helmet. “Now then, shall we get down to business?”
“As soon as you remove your helmet.” Cadence taunted. “Let me see your gorgeous crystal mane.”
Lapis’ sapphire mane took on a shade of red, and pushed his helmet on harder. “That won’t be necessary, ma’am.” Cadence playfully raised an eyebrow at his response. Lapis cleared his throat, and continued, “Besides, I need the helmet. What if the ceiling were to cave in at this very moment?”
Cadence burst out laughing at his statement. “I doubt the helmet would be enough to protect you there!” She shouted gleefully.
Seeing her lost in a fit of laughter caused Lapis to begin chuckling himself. “You really are in a good mood today, huh?” He asked after calming himself.
“How could I not be?” Cadence answered euphorically. “Both the Gala and my two-year anniversary are this week!”
Lapis put on a slightly more serious face. “Ah, yes, that’s what we must discuss.”
Cadence also regained her composure. “Of course. What am I scheduled for today?”
“Only one thing, and then you can relax. Some ambassadors from Canterlot wish to speak with you.”
“I see. I’ll see them as soon as possible. Would you send for them?” Cadence requested.
“It is still very early, Princess. I shall go send for your breakfast, and then I shall bring them to you.” Lapis offered.
Cadence’s stomach slightly growled at the thought of a meal. “That would be lovely. Thank you, Lapis.” She dismissed charismatically.
“My pleasure, Princess.” Lapis replied before bowing, and exiting the throne room. The doors shut behind him with a thud, and he began walking towards the castle’s kitchen.
Cadence, the Crystal Empress… He reflected. The savior of the Empire… I still remember when she banished the darkness of that awful king. I’ve never seen such a beautiful thing in my entire life…
“First Lieutenant Lapis! What can we do for you, sir?” One of the chefs asked him as he entered the kitchen.
“Would you send Empress Cadence some breakfast?” Lapis ordered.
“Consider it done, sir!” The chef saluted him, and then relayed the message to the rest of the kitchen’s staff.
Lapis moved on from the kitchen to the crystal spa. Not only is she a hero, she’s prefect in every way. He thought longingly. She’s a charismatic leader, she’s kind, she’s pleasant to be around, she’s gorgeous…
“Good morning, Lieutenant!” The spa ponies called out to him.
“May you ladies please go freshen up Empress Cadence before the ambassadors show up here?”
“But of course, dear!” The mares replied, their thick accents dripping from their voices.
Lapis quickly exited the spa, and began walking towards the train station. To think the Captain made me her bodyguard. He acted like it would be a burden. Heh, I’d take this job any day. Lapis smiled. It might be a little tedious at times, but being around My Empress everyday makes it all worthwhile.
“Second Lieutenant.” Lapis addressed the guard waiting at the train station.
“First Lieutenant.” The guard responded, and saluted respectfully.
“Send a message to the ambassadors: their escort is on his way.”
“Yes sir.” The second Lieutenant replied plainly, before walking towards the castle to fulfill his request.
Lapis waited for the train’s door to open, walked inside, and then turned to the conductor. “To Canterlot, please.”
“At once, sir.” The conductor answered, shut the doors, and started the train’s engine.
Lapis took a seat on the right side of the train, and stared idly at the Crystal Castle. Shining Armor is a lucky stallion… He thought yearningly. However, after that thought, Lapis shook his head violently. Stop it. No envy, no lust. You’re her bodyguard. He turned his head away from the castle. Now, to gather some ambassadors.

“Is this all truly necessary?” Cadence groaned.
The spa ponies had entered the throne room shortly after Lapis had left. They were currently brushing Cadence’s mane, as well as giving her a full hooficure. “Of course, Your Majesty!” One of the amethyst mares brushing her mane assured her.
I’m seeing ambassadors from Canterlot… It’s not that big of a deal… Cadence whined internally. “Oh, of course! Whatever you see fit!” She declared with a smile.
The crystal spa ponies beamed, and returned to their work. Cadence sighed quietly, and reclined in her throne. But then, the door to the throne room swung open, and two waiters entered the room. Cadence grinned at them as they walked over to her, and set down a table, followed by a silver platter. One of the waiters lifted the cover off with his magic, and Cadence nearly face-hoofed when he did.
Oh sweet Celestia… She moaned in her mind. On the platter was an abundance of fruits and flowers, which were meticulously crafted into a three-dimensional heart. I asked for breakfast, not artwork…
“Is something the matter with it, Your Majesty?” One of the waiters asked desperately.
“Of course not!” Cadence reassured them. “This looks divine, thank you so much.”
The crystal waiters grinned, bowed, and then exited the throne room. Cadence lit up her horn, and picked the heart off of the silver platter. She took a few minutes to just turn it over and examine it before she finally took a bite out of it.
I’m getting a full spa treatment while eating breakfast in my own throne… Cadence thought skeptically. These ponies spoil me rotten. She took another bite of her exquisite breakfast. Especially Lapis. He’s supposed to be a bodyguard, not a servant. Who else would send a spa treatment to me this early? Cadence reclined in her throne a second time, as the spa ponies moved on to her second hoof.
Oh, you’re being too hard on him, Cadence. She scolded herself. I don’t think Shining could’ve picked a better bodyguard. Cadence cracked a small smile. Well built, experienced, and willing to defend others if the need should arise. Also, he has the longest mane I’ve ever seen on a crystal pony. She giggled as she recalled how flustered he had acted earlier.
Not to mention, he makes my job much easier with all of the responsibilities he accepts. She continued to ramble. It’s also nice to have a pony who talks to me like a friend, and not like a goddess. Cadence sighed dreamily as she took another bite of her heart-shaped breakfast. Not that I don’t appreciate the other ponies…
Cadence leaned forward as the amethyst spa ponies brushing her mane began preening her wings. He really is a good stallion. I should thank him one of these days.
Cadence purred lightly when on the mares began massaging her back. That will come later though. Right now, I have a Gala and an anniversary to plan for… “A little lower, please.” Cadence quietly requested, and her masseuse instantly complied. Oooh… these ponies are too good to me . She thought blissfully.
Lapis, Shining… I’ll make sure that this Gala is one worth remembering. She thought decisively, as she melted into the spa treatment.

A few hours after the train had left for Canterlot, it returned, now toting three passengers. Lapis was the first to exit the train, followed by two stallions, who were both clad in expensive, regal garments. One of them had a pale blonde mane, and the other a faded gray one; the stallions were both visibly aged. Lapis extended a hoof towards the Crystal Castle, and turned to the two ambassadors.
“Welcome to the Crystal Empire.” He said with a smile.
One of the stallions scoffed at him, and the other turned his head away. “We did not come all this way to sightsee.” The blonde stallion replied in a condescending, haughty voice. “Would you kindly just escort us to the Princess?”
Lapis forced a wide grin at them. “Of course! Right this way!”
The stallions scoffed a second time, and followed him through a crowd of crystal ponies. As soon as he had turned his head away, Lapis’ grin turned into an agitated grimace. I can’t wait ‘til I never have to see these two again. He muttered internally.
Lapis escorted the two ambassadors through the Crystal Castle, having to make frequent stops due to them. They constantly stopped to look at different portions of the castle, let out a “hmph”, and then kept walking. I thought we weren’t here to sightsee… Lapis growled to himself.
After almost twenty minutes, the group reached the throne room. Lapis opened the door for the ambassadors, and they walked in without question. “Your Majesty, the Canterlot ambassadors are here to see you!” Lapis shouted as he followed behind them.
Cadence was wearing her normal charismatic smile, and happily greeted her guests. “Welcome! What brings you two gentlecolts to the Crystal Empire?”
The ambassadors approached Cadence, while Lapis stayed behind at the door. He looked up at Cadence, who was now shining almost as bright as a crystal pony. Only those spa ponies could make her look better. He thought giddily. I need to thank them personally.
“We come here on behalf of Princess Celestia.” The blonde ambassador answered condescendingly.
“We’ve come to discuss the matter of the Grand Galloping Gala.” The second added while flipping his short, gray mane.
“Of course.” Cadence began. “The other Princesses and I have agreed to host the Gala in the Crystal Empire this year. I assume you’ve come to reaffirm Celestia’s approval?”
“Yes, that is accurate.” The gray-maned ambassador responded.
“But we’ve also come with instructions.” The first ambassador added snootily, as he reached into his extravagant purple robe.
Lapis rolled his eyes. Just who does his guy think he is?
The ambassador pulled out a golden ticket with his hoof, and levitated it to Cadence. “First and foremost, you must take care of the distribution of tickets.”
“Here is the V.I.P. list.” The second ambassador informed her as he gave her a scroll. “Make certain that everypony on this list is sent a formal invitation.”
Cadence took the scroll and the ticket in her own magical grp, and set them down next to her. “I shall see to it.” She assured them.
“Next,” The blonde ambassador carried on, “You must make this castle presentable for the Princesses.” His deep gray face cracked a sardonic grin. “As it stands, this castle is unsuitable for any Princess, yourself included.”
Lapis’ ruby eyes flared angrily. Say that again, you old bastard. I dare you. He raged internally.
“I… see. I shall make sure that my castle is… presentable.” Cadence responded, her smile slightly faltering.
“Finally, and most importantly…The Gala is an Equestrian tradition, and you must treat it as such.” The gray-maned stallion told Cadence cynically. “You must make this a… grand Gala, for lack of a better word. We mustn’t have a repeat of that disaster two years ago.”
Cadence let out a quiet giggle. “I think I can manage that.” She replied merrily.
“See that you do.” The blonde ambassador threatened. “Otherwise… There might never be another Gala in the Crystal Empire.”
Cadence’s smile finally faded. “So, is that all? If so, you may return home.” She dismissed them, her glee fading fast.
The two ambassadors nodded to each other, and then began walking towards the door. “That is all, Princess.” The blonde stallion finished. The two stallions stopped in front of Lapis, and looked at him expectantly.
“Second Lieutenant!” Lapis called at the doors. One crystal guard burst through the doors and saluted, and Lapis pointed to the two stallions. “Please escort these… gentlecolts… back to Canterlot.”
The Second Lieutenant nodded, and gestured for the two stallions to follow him. They complied, and soon all three of them had exited the throne room. Lapis shut the door with his magic, and let out an incredibly loud sigh of relief. “Good riddance. Would a letter be so much to ask for?” He sighed.
Cadence took a breath of her own, and regained her smile. “They’re impossible aren’t they?” She asked wearily.
Lapis left his post at the door, and started approaching the throne. “It takes some willpower to stay as calm as you do, Princess.” He complimented.
“You flatter me.” Cadence replied.
Lapis stopped at the foot of her throne, and hung his head. “I’m sorry, Empress. You deserve much better treatment than that.”
“Don’t make that face, Lapis. It’s something that all Princesses have to deal with. I’m used to it.” Cadence assured him.
“Well it shouldn’t be like that. Especially not to you.” He muttered. Cadence gave him a reassuring grin, but Lapis sighed unhappily. “I think I speak for the rest of the Empire when I say this… I think you should be the one ruling Equestria.”
Cadence’s eyes widened at his random statement, but she quickly hid her surprise. “You’re too nice.” She remarked blissfully.
“I mean it.” Lapis asserted. “You’re a charismatic leader, and yet you’re capable of taking matters into your own hooves. You’re exactly the type of leader Equestria needs.”
Cadence blushed, and her lavender eyes spaced out. “I…” She whispered. Then, she shook her head vigorously. “I couldn’t possibly rule Equestria.” She rejected his idea. “I have enough trouble just running the Empire. Even if I thought I could, Celestia’s been ruling for thousands of years. It would be silly to think I could replace her.”
And I’m ‘too nice.’ Lapis thought sarcastically.
Cadence looked into Lapis’ eyes, and shot him a caring smile. “But thank you for thinking so highly of me.”
Lapis felt his cheeks grow hot under her gaze, and he quickly shied away. Ugh, don’t look at me like that…
Cadence giggled when he turned away, and then lit up her horn. “But enough about ruling Equestria, we have something to take care of.” Lapis turned his head back around, and watched Cadence levitate the ticket and V.I.P. list in front of her. “So we need to both distribute the tickets and make the castle look… ‘Presentable.’”
Lapis put his right hoof on his chin, and thought to himself, this is my chance! “Tell ya what, Princess.” He offered. “Why don’t you just focus on decorating the castle while I deal with the tickets?”
Cadence shook her head. “I couldn’t possibly ask you to do that. It’s my responsibility.”
“Your Majesty, it would be my honor to handle the ticket distribution.” Lapis declared nobly.
Cadence scratched her head, debating her options. She was silent for a few seconds, and then gave Lapis the ticket and V.I.P. list. “All right.” She gave in. “Just make sure it’s done by next week, all right?”
“Of course, Your Majesty.” Lapis promised, and then bowed respectfully.
Cadence beamed at him. “Thank you, Lapis.”
Lapis saluted, and began running out of the throne room, the ticket and list in his purple magical aura. “I’ll get started right away, Princess!” He called behind him.
Cadence laughed, and responded, “Good luck! The fate of the Gala is in your hooves!”
Lapis bolted out of the throne room, and towards the guards’ barracks. My Empress, I’ll make sure that this is the best Gala in history! And then those nobles will respect you as much as I do! He thought confidently, as he charged into his barracks.
The Crystal Empire’s train sped across the rails to Ponyville under the cloudy summer sky. It charged towards Ponyville with its three high-class passengers in tow. Lapis and Cadence sat side-by-side on the left side of the train, while the Second Lieutenant sat on the right.
“We’ll be arriving shortly, Your Majesty.” Lapis informed Cadence.
Cadence turned her head and smiled at him. “Thank you, Lapis.” She chirped. “I’m looking forward to seeing my stepsister again.”
Lapis quickly turned his head away from her, and his Lapis-blue mane fell down from underneath his crystal helmet. He quickly went to work tucking the lengthy mane back underneath the helmet, and Cadence pouted behind his back. Is it just me, or does he turn away every time I smile at him? She pondered. Shining acts like this sometimes, but that usually means he’s hiding something from me…
Lapis succeeded in concealing his mane, and he turned back to Cadence. His ruby eyes met hers, and he returned her smile. “I’m sure she’s looking forward to it too.” He calmly responded.
Cadence regained her blissful face. That’s more like it.
As soon as he had spoken to her, Lapis turned away again, and began staring out the window. Cadence’s happiness faded, and she decided to press him. “Is there something on your mind?” She asked nosily.
“Nothing special. Just thinking of the Gala.” Lapis quickly replied, without turning around.
He’s lying, isn’t he? Cadence asked herself irritatedly. I could just order him to tell me… No, don’t do that. Just find another way… “So, how is the ticket distribution coming along?”
Lapis awkwardly scratched the back of his head. “Fantastic! I’m already, uh, halfway done!” He replied sheepishly.
Cadence furrowed her brow. Why does he act like such a foal? She thought angrily. There’s obviously something wrong, why won’t he tell me? “If it’s too much for you, I can do it myself…”
Lapis spun around to her. “No!” He yelled without hesitation. Then he covered his mouth and began blushing embarrassedly.
Well, that got a response out of him. Cadence noted amusedly.
“I mean, I said I would get it done, and I will.” Lapis corrected himself. “Don’t worry about it.”
Cadence opened her mouth to reply, but then the train screeched to a halt. “We have arrived in Ponyville.” The conductor called out.
Lapis sighed in relief, and grew a happier expression. “Let’s move, Your Majesty. She’s waiting for you.”
Cadence swore internally, but exited the train regardless. Waiting for her was her stepsister, as well as her six friends. “Cadence!” Her sister-in-law greeted her, and then embraced her.
“Good to see you again, Twilight.” Cadence replied elatedly. Lapis and the Second Lieutenant exited the train, and stood a few paces behind her. “It’s good to see all of you as well.” Cadence addressed the small group in front of her. She received multiple smirks and smiles, as well as one awkward wave. She released Twilight, and looked at her expectantly. “Well let’s get to business then! Or did you just want to see your favorite sister-in-law again?” She asked humorously.
Twilight looked disappointed, but began leading the way regardless. “I just need to discuss a few things with you. I know you’re probably busy-”
“Not at all! I can always make time for you!” Cadence interrupted.
Twilight smiled at her, and continued leading her away. “We’ll talk at the castle. I’ll see you girls later.” She bid goodbye to her friends.
“Make sure to invite the Wonderbolts to the Gala!” Somepony called after them.
“Rainbow Dash!”
“Yeah Dashie, for shame! But make sure to have a disco ball!”
“Pinkie dear, you can’t have a disco ball at a Gala…”
“Is there a garden at the Castle…?”
Cadence burst into laughter as she approached Ponyville’s castle. “Oh Twilight, your friends are such charming characters.” She chimed.
“Yeah…” Twilight sighed wearily. She opened the large doors to her castle, and invited Cadence inside.
“We’ll wait out here.” Lapis announced suddenly.
“Are you sure?” Cadence asked concernedly.
“No. I can’t deal with being alone for a few minutes.” He joked, and then seriously replied, “Take your time, Empress.”
Cadence gave him a motherly smile. “Thank you.”
Lapis nodded, and then took his place on the right side of the doors. Cadence followed Twilight inside, and Lapis shut the door behind her. As soon as she entered the castle, she was greeted with magnificent crystal walls, as well as a regal violet floor. There were a multitude of doors and hallways, yet there were no ponies in sight, save for the lavender alicorn ahead of her.
“Gee Twilight. It sure is… extensive in here.” Cadence observed, ignoring the obvious.
Twilight chuckled. “It sure is, isn’t it? I had to label the path to the throne room.”
Cadence looked down at her hooves, and sure enough, “TO THRONE ROOM” was engraved into the floor. She jammed her hoof into her mouth to stifle her laughter. Soon enough, the two alicorns entered a circular room with seven thrones in it. “Now that we’re alone…” Twilight said mischievously. Cadence was confused, but then caught on, and approached Twilight.
“Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake! Clap your hooves and do a little shake!” The two chanted and danced in unison.
After their little song-and-dance, Twilight sat in the throne with her cutie mark in it, and Cadence awkwardly took the throne with three butterflies on it. Cadence looked around herself, and took note of the uncomfortable silence of the castle.
“Not to be rude Twilight…” Cadence sheepishly broke the silence. “But doesn’t it seem a little… empty in here?”
A dark cloud seemed to appear above Twilight, and she hung her head dejectedly. “I know its empty in here…” Twilight blubbered. “I’m just so used to the library… I have no idea what to do with this place…”
Cadence grimaced at her response. “H-hey, empty isn’t bad! That means you have plenty of room for visitors!”
Cadence’s attempt to comfort her only made Twilight’s head droop impossibly lower. “L-let’s change the subject.” Cadence stammered.
“Ok.” Twilight immediately perked up, and Cadence breathed a sigh of relief. “Cadence, who’s that stallion outside? The one who keeps following you?”
Cadence chuckled, and reclined in Fluttershy’s throne. “We really have been out-of-touch, haven’t we? That’s Lapis Lazuli, my personal bodyguard.” She explained lightheartedly.
“You have a bodyguard?” Twilight questioned.
“Yes. Shining Armor assigned him to me six months ago. He was always getting worried about me when he couldn’t be around, so he gave me Lapis. He follows me wherever I go.”
Twilight cringed. “You have a pony follow you everywhere? That sounds terrible! Where’s your privacy?”
Cadence giggled loudly. “At first, I thought the same thing.” She answered in a bubbly voice. “But it isn’t bad at all. In fact, he’s quite enjoyable to be around. And he’s willing to leave me to myself if I ask him to.” Cadence leaned forward in her seat, and put a hoof next to her mouth. “But don’t tell Shining Armor that.” She whispered jokingly.
“Speaking of Shining Armor, how has he been lately?” Twilight questioned.
Cadence’s eyes became spacey, and she looked up at the ceiling. Shining… She thought longingly. “Shining’s been… distant lately.” Cadence answered unsurely. “He’s been pulling a lot of all-nighters, and whenever he does come home, he barely has enough energy to talk to me. And I can’t talk to him during the day because I have to run the Empire…” She sighed miserably. “I suppose that’s how it goes when your husband’s the Captain of the Royal Guard.”
Twilight looked around awkwardly, thinking of a response. “Well… your anniversary is this week, right? Do you have plans for that?”
Cadence returned from her trance, and put on her normal smile. “Of course. It’s nothing extravagant, just a little reminder of our special day.”
Twilight grinned at her. “I’m sure he’ll love it.” She assured, and then gained an expression of sudden realization. “Oh! I almost forgot!” She exclaimed, and then lit up her horn. She levitated a folded sheet of paper from behind her throne, and unfolded it in front of her. “The reason I called you here. I made a checklist of everything you need to have at the Gala for it to be perfect.”
Cadence quietly laughed to herself. Some things never change. She thought blissfully.
“Ahem.” Twilight began. “So, at the Gala, you will need: Quality refeshments, a large, classy ballroom, a high-class orchestra, proper invitations, the attendance of all four Princesses, exquisite decorations, a fireworks display, and some scribbled items… hold on a sec… ok. A fireworks display, a mandatory… cider-drinking party, and… hunky… stallions…”
Twilight’s lavender face turned beet red, and she crumpled the list in her hooves. “Hahahaha ya know, who follows lists these days?! Let’s just move on!” She shouted, completely flustered.
Cadence could barely hold in her laughter, and she spoke through her chuckles. “But Twilight, I already knew all that.”
Twilight sat idly for a few moments, and then buried her face in her hooves. “So I called you here for nothing, then…” She deflated.
Cadence exploded into merry laughter. Cider?! Hunky Stallions?! She screamed internally, as her giddiness overtook her.
Twilight watched her sister-in-law crack up, completely shamefaced. After watching her for as long as she could take, Twilight cleared her throat. “So, Cadence, why don’t you tell me more about this bodyguard of yours?” She shifted the topic. “Why would Shining pick him? He seems rather… incapable.”
“He is not incapable!” Cadence instantly shot back. Twilight flinched, and Cadence cleared her own throat. “He might act childish sometimes, but I couldn’t ask for a better bodyguard.” Cadence began, and started to zone out. “He used to be a writer, you know. It was his talent. He only joined the guard after we freed the Empire. He’s loyal, he’s well-built, his mane looks great when it’s down, he’s fun to be around… And most importantly, he’s one of the only ponies I know who would sacrifice himself, if for some reason he needed to.” Cadence looked over at Twilight, who was now staring at her, her mouth agape. Cadence only now realized what she’d said, and she quickly put on a mask of certainty. “Like I said, he’s an incredible bodyguard.” She lied.
Twilight let out a loud sigh of relief, and smirked at Cadence. “Sheesh, sorry I asked.”
“Haha, sorry. So, what else is on your mind?” Cadence questioned. ...Where in Tartarus did that come from? Cadence asked herself. He’s your bodyguard, not your high school crush…
“Hmm… nothing really.” Twilight answered indecisively. “Why don’t we head back into town? It’s depressing in here…”
That came from somewhere, Cadence. But… from where? What was I thinking? “That’s a great idea! I always enjoy seeing the sights here!” Cadence agreed without a second thought.
“Come on, then! I don’t want you to get lost in this empty palace of mine.” Twilight said bittersweetly.
Cadence nodded her head, and the two alicorns filed out of the castle. What was I… No, it’s nothing. Cadence told herself. A mere slip of the tongue. You’ve got a Gala, and an anniversary coming up. Just enjoy this visit with your stepsister.
Cadence and Twilight paraded through Ponyville, touring it as they usually do. But even as the two alicorns were enjoying each other’s company, the questions Cadence had asked herself still rang in her mind. As she walked through Ponyville, she caught her bodyguard eyeing her quite a few times. But sometimes, when she caught his eye, she couldn’t help herself from staring back at him.

Four days had passed since Cadence’s visit to Ponyville, and the Gala was scheduled for the following day. The Crystal Empire had been successfully prepared for the Gala. Its ballroom had been cleared, it had been decorated with the finest crystalline fabrics and artworks, and multiple tables and stages had been set up for the food and musicians coming the next day. The tickets had all been distributed, and all of the V.I.P. guests had been sent a formal invitation. Even though all of the work had been finished, the Castle was a tad gloomy, for it had begun to storm outside.
Lapis entered Cadence’s throne room as he usually did in the morning, and Cadence greeted him with her normal charismatic grin. “Happy Anniversary, Your Majesty!” Lapis greeted her cheekily.
Cadence tilted her head, confused. “Oh… you remembered my anniversary?” She asked perplexedly.
Lapis smirked. “Of course I did! I mean, you can’t be this happy because of the Gala.”
Cadence shot him a playful smile. “Yes, you’d be right about that. The Gala has been a rather big nuisance lately.” She closed her eyes, and beamed thankfully. “Thank you for handling the tickets, and helping me with the decorations. You did an outstanding job.”
Lapis’ smile suddenly faded, and he avoided Cadence’s gaze. “Yeah… don’t mention it.” He quietly responded.
Cadence was troubled by his response. Did I say something wrong? She worried.
“So, if the Gala’s ready to go, I need to step out for a little bit.” Lapis let out an overblown sigh. “I need to go buy a suit.”
Cadence regained her endearing composure. “Take as long as you need to. You are dismissed for the day.”
Lapis grinned, and bowed respectfully. “I’ll make sure that it’s presentable. Have a nice anniversary.” With that, he whirled around, and charged out of the throne room. Cadence watched her bodyguard disappear, and breathed a sigh of relief.
See? She assured herself. Nothing. No undesired feelings, or special attachment. Just a bodyguard.
She stood up, and took a walk to the throne room’s large balcony, which overlooked the entire Empire. Cadence looked over its golden rails, and took in the breathtaking sight of her Empire. The dark storm clouds overhead did nothing to take away from the illuminant city. Cadence leaned on the railing, and cracked a small, wistful smile. Everything’s perfect. She complimented herself. Tomorrow will be the first ever Gala in the Crystal Empire, as well as the best in Equestria.
Cadence felt a drop of rain fall on her back, and she retreated back inside. Shining will be home tonight. I need to go make sure his surprise is ready. She decided. Cadence shut the crystal door to the balcony, and walked over to the large room behind the throne where she and her husband lived.

Almost immediately after Lapis had left the clothing store, rain had begun pouring down outside the castle. “Well isn’t that typical…” He cursed his luck. He looked over at his new expensive suit, and its meager plastic coat. He quickly muttered a spell to himself, and created a magical bubble around the suit. “That oughta keep it dry.” He complimented himself. He trotted out of the rain, and took shelter underneath the Crystal Castle. Lapis let out a weary sigh, and leaned against one of the castle’s legs.
“It’s the Empress’ anniversary today… She seems pretty excited about it.” Lapis monologued. “Two years now, huh? And she’s still this excited. Heh, makes me kinda jealous. I wish I had a wife who loved me that much.”
That’s not why you’re jealous. His inner voice nagged him. Lapis shook his head, and looked straight ahead. His eyes were caught by the sight directly in front of him, the Crystal Heart.
“The Crystal Heart… I doubt I’ll ever forget when the Princess brought it back.” Lapis recalled nostalgically. ‘The Crystal Heart has returned. Use the light and love within you to ensure that King Sombra does not.’
Lapis closed his eyes, and smiled dreamily. “Princess...” He whispered. If I was her husband… “Shut up.” He stopped himself. “She’s your Empress. She has a husband, whom she is very happy with. Stop desiring something you can never have.”
Lapis hung his head, crestfallen. He knew that he had preparations to make for the upcoming Gala, but he didn’t budge. He just leaned against the castle, watching the Crystal Heart, and listening to the sound of falling rain.

Night had fallen over the Crystal Empire, yet it was near unnoticeable with the heavy storm clouds hanging overhead. The crystal ponies had all gone back to their homes, and the sound of the rain went unchallenged in the night.
Cadence was pacing inside of her living quarters, double-checking everything she had set out for her anniversary. On the kitchen table was both the cake she had baked, and her small, delicately wrapped present. “Shining will love it.” Cadence chirped gleefully. “This will cheer him up. After all of the extra work he’s been doing, he’ll need it.” Cadence beamed at her work, and waited anxiously for the door to open. “I feel like a filly again.” She giggled.
Cadence’s happiness began to ebb away as the minutes flew by. She continued to sit and wait for her husband to walk through the door, but it seemed like it never would. Did he get caught up with something? Cadence wondered as she glared at the unmoving door.
Finally, after there was no light left outside, the door creaked open. Cadence snapped out of her half-sleep, and jumped to her hooves. Shining Armor stepped through the doorway, and hung his purple helmet on the wall. Cadence beamed, and ran up to greet him.
“Welcome home, Shining.” Cadence greeted him, and then gave him a quick kiss on the lips.
“Good to be home, Cadence.” Shining Armor replied in a relieved tone.
Cadence broke away from him, and smiled giddily. “I have something for you.” She sang.
Shining Armor seemed incredibly surprised by her statement. “Really?” He asked.
Cadence giggled, and skipped over to the kitchen table. She gestured to the present, and Shining Armor approached it happily. “Heh, what’s the occasion?” He queried, as he picked up his present.
All glee fled from Cadence’s face. She stared blankly at Shining Armor, who was smiling innocently. “Haha, hahahaha, good joke honey.” She attempted to laugh.
Shining Armor now looked completely confused, and his eyes drifted to the cake on the table. “Happy anni…ver…” His eyes instantly widened as he read the writing on the cake. He swiftly set down his present, and whirled around to Cadence. “H-happy anniversary, Cadence!” He shouted frantically.
Cadence looked into his fearful eyes, and came to the only conclusion possible. She sighed heavily, and looked down at her hooves. He… forgot… She thought sorrowfully.
“Uhm… Cadence…” Shining Armor stammered nervously.
Cadence looked at him with a frighteningly wide grin. “Well, who cares if you forgot? It’s out anniversary! Open your present, dear!” She ordered him with forced happiness.
“Cadence…” Shining Armor murmured guiltily.
“Go on! Open it! Don’t be shy!” Cadence encouraged him.
Shining Armor didn’t make her wait any longer, and he unwrapped the present’s ribbon with his teeth. He removed its contents with his magic, and his guilt grew tenfold when he did. “Oh no…” He whispered dejectedly.
In his magical aura was a pink, crystal replica of his shield cutie mark, in the form of a badge. The badge was shining perpetually, and yet was translucent, like a gemstone. “It’s an enchanted quartz.” Cadence explained, her fake smile fading away. “It’s enchanted to shine forever, like… our… love…”
Shining Armor cringed, completely wracked with guilt. “Cadence…”
Cadence stared at the floor, all of her happiness gone, real or fake. “Let’s… let’s just eat the cake already.” She muttered bitterly, before taking a seat at the kitchen table.
Shining Armor sat down quietly, and magically cut two pieces of the cake. He gave one to Cadence, who just looked at it sadly. My own husband forgot our anniversary… Cadence cried internally. It’s… not a big deal. It’s just an anniversary… Of the most important day of my life…
Cadence glanced over at her husband, who was silently eating cake. He’s just been… busy lately. He wouldn’t have forgotten if he hadn’t been so busy…
But Lapis remembered. She thought suddenly. Well of course he did! I’ve mentioned it for the past week! She countered herself. But you’ve reminded Shining before… and he knows when our anniversary is… How could he forget, when somepony else could remember so easily?!
“…Cadence?” Shining Armor whimpered.
“…Yes?” Cadence slowly hissed, without even raising up her head.
“Uhm… the cake was really good.” He awkwardly complimented.
Cadence continued staring at her hooves. “…Thanks.” She murmured. Shining Armor attempted to say something meaningful, but he couldn’t find the right words. Eventually, Cadence stood up, and began walking to her bedroom. “I’m going to bed.” She muttered to her husband, and then locked the bedroom door behind her.
Cadence wobbled over to her bed, and collapsed in it. She rested her head against her plush, white pillow, and pulled a blanket over herself. She closed her eyes, and let her emotions flow out of her. A lump appeared in her throat, and she began quietly crying into her pillow. Her tears soaked into the pillow below, and she silently hicced and sobbed in the lonely bedroom.
“Why… Why did he have to forget…?” She bitterly cried. “Why does it hurt so bad…?” She slammed her hoof on the bed. “It’s just… *hic*… a stupid anniversary… so… why…?” Cadence rolled over, and rested her head on her forelegs. “Why does it hurt me so much…?”
Cadence wept bitterly into her forelegs, and then started grinding her teeth together angrily. “And why… Why do I keep thinking of him ?” She wailed. “Why does he keep entering my thoughts? Why… Why did he have to remember my anniversary… why…?”
Cadence broke down, and violently sobbed into her pillow. “Why…?” She sniveled between breaths. “Why does my heart ache so badly ?!”
Cadence grabbed Shining Armor’s pillow, and squeezed it in her forelegs. “Why… Shining… Lapis…” She cried despondently, before her tears overtook her, and she couldn’t talk anymore. Her quiet wails were the only sound she could make. After her pillow had become damp with tears, Cadence fell into a heavy, unhappy slumber. The Princess had cried herself to sleep, cold and alone, while her husband found himself occupying the couch for the night.
Lapis trotted down the Crystal Castle’s halls, his spirits higher than ever. The skies were perfectly clear on this Saturday morning, and all of the crystal ponies were chattering away outside the castle. The Grand Galloping Gala was scheduled for that evening, and everything was going swimmingly. Lapis made a slight detour from his usual route, and entered the guards’ barracks. He picked out his sleeping target, and nudged him awake.
“Good morning, Second Lieutenant.” Lapis greeted him. “Today is the day of the Gala. Could you bring… ‘that’… around to the throne room?”
The Second Lieutenant gave him an annoyed stare when he woke up, but then his eyes widened with understanding. “At once, sir!” He declared, a little too loudly.
“Excellent. See that you do.” Lapis ordered him, and then resumed walking towards the throne room.
This Gala is going to be perfect. He chanted in his mind. All those snobs from Canterlot will see the Empire for the glorious land that it is.
Lapis reached the throne room, and threw open the large crystal doors. “Good morning, Your Majesty!” He greeted as he usually did.
Cadence was sitting atop her throne as she usually did, but she didn’t have a pleasant air about her today. Her eyes were swollen and puffy, and her mouth was curled into a neutral frown. “Hello, Lapis.” She greeted him humorlessly.
Lapis was bewildered by her demeanor, and he approached her slowly. “Is something troubling you, Princess?” He questioned, visibly concerned.
“No. Nothing at all. What’s my schedule for today?” Cadence changed the topic.
“Nothing. All you need to do is prepare for the Gala.” Lapis informed her, and she scowled. “Your Majesty, something troubles you. Please, feel free to confide in me. I am your bodyguard, you can trust in me.” Lapis pleaded.
Cadence sighed, and her expression became gloomy. “I assure you, it is not of importance. Please abandon this pursuit.” She discouraged.
“I insist. Please grace my ears, Empress.” Lapis persisted.
Cadence glared at him, and then, after seeing his determination, hung her head. “It is nothing you should concern yourself with.” She began. “It’s just… my husband forgot our anniversary last night.”
Lapis’ eyes widened. Oh no… He thought fearfully.
Cadence chuckled halfheartedly. “Yeah, I thought he would remember too. I guess… it just slipped his mind.” Lapis searched his mind desperately for something to say, but he found nothing. Then, Cadence narrowed her eyes, and put on a forced smile. “You know what’s funny?” Lapis turned back to her. “How my own husband forgot the most important day of our lives… And yet, you remembered, Lapis.”
Time froze after Cadence’s statement. Lapis’ mind was flooded with questions, and possible paths of action.

She looks so vulnerable…

Just confess already.
“Cadence, I… I…” Lapis stammered, unsure of himself. He took a deep breath to steady himself, and looked her in the eyes. “I’m sure there’s a reason Shining Armor forgot your anniversary.” Cadence was visibly shocked by his answer, and he carried on, “I’m sorry that he forgot, it must have stung. But Princess, Shining has been incredibly busy lately. I’m surprised he can remember his own name with all of the work he’s been doing. Your Majesty, Shining Armor loves you, more than anything in the world. There must be a reason he forgot. Give him a chance to explain himself, he will make this right.”
Cadence was positively stunned by Lapis’ speech. As he finished, all of her suppressed emotions came back like a flood, and tears began welling in her eyes. “Lapis…” She whispered, and then jumped out of her throne, and threw her forelegs around him. “Thank you… Thank you…” She blubbered into her sapphire shoulder.
Lapis returned the embrace, and sighed quietly. She gave you the perfect opportunity, and you ignored it. His inner voice berated him.
Like I said… He shut himself up. I won’t desire what I can’t have.
“Your Majesty…” He whispered. “I doubt it will help much, but I have something to show you.” He let go of Cadence, and began leading her toward the throne room doors. He opened them for her, and held his left hoof in front of himself. Cadence’s mouth hung open when she took in the sight in front of her.
In front of Cadence was a small clothes rack, with only one article of clothing hanging on it: a crystalline, violet dress, clearly designed for her. The dress was long enough to completely cover her, and was littered with gold and pink hearts along its base. The entire dress sparkled in the same fashion as a crystal pony. In addition to the dress were four identical crystal shoes, the same color as the dress, and each sporting two hearts on them, one gold, and one pink.
“It’s your Gala dress.” Lapis explained timidly. “All of the best designers in the Empire designed it for you. It’s kind of a late thank you, for two years back.”
Cadence began to get choked up. “I… don’t know what to say.” Cadence thanked him, her words failing her.
“There’s one more thing.” Lapis informed her, and then lit up his horn. He levitated a diamond necklace from inside of Cadence’s dress, and hung it around her neck. At the end of the necklace was a jade replica of the Crystal Heart, which shined even brighter than the diamonds that accompanied it.
“It’s… gorgeous. All of it is breathtaking.” Cadence stammered, completely star-struck.
“It sure is, isn’t it?” Lapis agreed. “I just made the inscription.”
Cadence tilted her head at him. She turned over the jade heart, and found that there was indeed an inscription on the back of it: To our shining light, Princess Mi Amore Cadenza.
Cadence’s pink cheeks began burning a bright shade of red, and she smiled lovingly at Lapis. “You’ve left me absolutely speechless. I can’t thank you enough for this.”
“It was nothing, My Empress.” Lapis told her humbly.
“You’ve definitely saved me the trouble of picking out a dress.” Cadence jested blissfully. She took in the dress for a moment, and then beamed at Lapis. “I suppose we should both get ready, then.”
Lapis nodded in understanding, and bowed. “In that case, I shall meet you at the Gala, My Empress.”
“Dismissed, Lapis.” Cadence allowed him to leave.
Lapis rose to his hooves, and walked in the direction of the guards’ barracks. Time to tidy up. He thought elatedly, as he entered the barracks, and began preparation for the coming evening.

Night had descended upon the Crystal Empire, yet it was more active than ever. Trainloads of ponies from all across Equestria were arriving, and many pegasi were touching down in the Empire. The waves of multi-colored ponies were all flooding into the Crystal Castle, where multiple bouncers were taking their tickets.
The interior of the castle had been completely transformed; ponies were in every hallway, and every room. The decorations and artworks now shined radiantly, much like gemstones. The orchestra and refreshments had arrived on time, and were set up in the ballroom, where a majority of the ponies found themselves.
All of the V.I.P. ponies had received their invitations, and were all in attendance, save for Prince Blueblood, who was mysteriously absent. The Princesses were all in attendance as well; Princess Luna was assaulting the refreshments table, while Princess Celestia greeted all of the ponies attending the Gala. Everything was going perfectly.
Cadence sat by herself in the ballroom, idly watching the other ponies socialize. She was wearing the purple crystalline dress Lapis had presented to her, as well as the necklace, and the shoes. Her mane had been put up into the ceremonial headdress, complimenting her regal outfit perfectly. Her mouth was curled into a welcoming smile, so that all of the ponies could feel a sense of joy and security.
And yet, despite the success of the Gala, Cadence was brewing in a feeling of uncertainty. Behind her façade of radiant bliss was a mess of questions, which she was attempting to answer. Where is Shining Armor? She thought impatiently. I know where Lapis is… She looked across the ballroom, and caught sight of Lapis.
Lapis was no longer donning his crystal armor, and his lapis-blue mane hung down to his torso. His sapphire torso was covered in a light-gray crystalline suit, which shined as he did. His quill cutie mark was now visible, half-concealed by his suit. He didn’t notice Cadence, and was currently wrapped up in a conversation with the two ambassadors from earlier. Judging from their demeanors, Lapis was currently telling them off.
Lapis… My bodyguard… Cadence thought dreamily. He’s really become more than that lately, hasn’t he? Complimenting me, comforting me… He’s been treating me better than Shining Armor… She sighed wearily. Why is this happening to me? Why do I feel this way towards another stallion? And why has Shining become so distant?
Cadence sat in silence, listening to the sounds of the orchestra. Her smile wouldn’t return, as much as she willed it to. Shining’s been busy… Busy. She hissed internally. Everpony keeps saying that to me. Busy. Lapis distributed the tickets, Lapis helped me decorate, Lapis remembered my anniversary, Lapis got me this outfit… What’s his excuse?
After a few minutes, Cadence heard hoofsteps behind her. She turned around, and standing behind her was Shining Armor, wearing his red suit from their wedding. He had his anniversary gift pinned to his suit, and it was shining radiantly.
“Uh… hey, Cadence.” He awkwardly greeted her.
Cadence stood up, and glared daggers into his eyes. “Hey.” She snarled.
Shining Armor flinched, but then his face became apologetic. “Cadence… I’m sorry.” Cadence icily raised an eyebrow at him. “I didn’t mean to forget, I mean, I would have remembered, I’ve just been so busy-”
“Busy.” Cadence hissed. “Everypony keeps saying that. Busy . With what?” She stepped forward, and stared straight into his eyes. “Answer me. What is so important to you that you would forget our anniversary?”
Shining Armor’s resolve crumbled under her gaze. “Uhm… I…”
“What have you been doing for the past week?!” Cadence yelled, causing a commotion around her.
“I… I…” Shining Armor stuttered.
“He was distributing the tickets for the Gala.” A third voice intervened. Cadence and Shining Armor both turned toward the source of the voice, and saw Lapis standing a few feet from them.
“What did you say?” Cadence asked, completely baffled.
“I said he was distributing tickets for the Gala. Your Majesty… I didn’t distribute the tickets. He did.” Lapis explained. “He took the job from me so that I could focus on helping you decorate, so that you had less work to do. He ordered me to keep quiet about it because he wanted to surprise you.” Lapis glared at his two superiors. “He forgot your anniversary because he was juggling both the duties of being Captain of the guard, and the duties of distributing the tickets. That’s what he’s been busy with.”
Cadence’s mouth hung open in surprise, and then Lapis pointed to her necklace. “Also, that necklace you’re wearing. It was his idea, not mine. I said I merely wrote the inscription, and I meant it.” Cadence’s mouth curled into a guilty frown. “As you can see, Shining has only been trying to help you.”
Cadence hung her head, ashamed of herself. “That is all, have a nice night.” Lapis dismissed himself, and then walked away.
Cadence looked up at Shining Armor, guilt overwhelming her. “Shining, was all that… true?” She asked in a hushed voice.
Shining Armor grinned sheepishly. “Would you believe me if I said yes?” He replied humbly.
Tears of joy appeared in Cadence’s eyes. She wrapped her forelegs around his neck, and kissed him passionately. He returned the kiss full force. After a few seconds, Cadence broke the kiss, and smiled euphorically.
“So, does this mean that you forgive me?” Shining Armor asked cautiously.
Cadence giggled, and embraced him. “Yes, I do.”
Cadence held him for a few more seconds, and then sighed. I wish I could just stay like this… But I have one more thing I must do tonight. She promptly broke the embrace, and began walking out of the ballroom.
“Cadence!” Shining Armor called after her.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon. Please just be patient.” Cadence reassured him, and then exited the ballroom. I’m sorry, Shining. But my heart is still torn. I know what I have to do. Cadence apologized in her head. Finally, she entered the throne room, and sent a message to a certain somepony.

Lapis jogged down the castle’s corridors, his lapis-blue mane flowing behind him. He had been informed by one of the castle’s messengers that Cadence had requested his presence. The messenger had sounded urgent, so he had taken off immediately.
You defended Shining against the Empress herself. Not only that, you just threw away everything you had gained in this past week. Good job, hero. His inner voice twisted the metaphorical knife, and Lapis sighed despondently. I'm gonna get fired, aren't I? He thought sadly, as he entered the throne room.
Lapis looked around the throne room, but he couldn’t find Cadence anywhere. He was thinking of going back and questioning the messenger, when he found her. She was standing on the castle’s large balcony, completely by herself. Lapis hesitated for a few seconds, and then gingerly opened the balcony’s door.
“You called for me, Your Majesty?” Lapis addressed Cadence.
Cadence’s ears perked up, and she slowly turned around. Her lavender eyes locked with his ruby ones, and she gave him an unreadable stare. “Lapis…” She whispered. “Come over here.”
Lapis was surprised, but he trotted over to her regardless. He stood a few paces away from her, and urged, “Yes?”
Cadence took a deep breath, and shut her eyes. “I have a question for you. You must answer honestly, all right?” Lapis nodded anxiously. Cadence opened her eyes, and asked him softly,
“Lapis Lazuli, do you love me?”
Lapis heart stopped beating. His thoughts broke down into anarchy; he couldn’t think straight.
Wha…What?
That’s why she brought me here?

What did I do wrong?
“Heh, of course I do, Princess!” He answered jokingly.
Cadence narrowed her eyes. “Don’t be coy with me.” She replied humorlessly.
Lapis bit his lip, trying to think. “Empress…” He muttered. His heart started pounding as he reached his decision, and he looked straight at her.
“…Yes. I do. I… I love you, Mi Amore Cadenza.” He forced through his choked up throat.
Cadence’s expression didn’t change, and Lapis’ heart sank. Idiot. His eyes dropped to the floor. “I’m sorry! I just… I thought…”
Lapis’ apology was interrupted by a pair of warm lips connecting with his own. Lapis’ cheeks erupted into flame as he realized what was happening. His Empress was kissing him.
Then, just as quickly as it had happened, Cadence pulled away from him, and smiled lovingly. “That was for everything you’ve done for me.” She explained happily.
…Huh? Lapis questioned internally.
“You’ve shown me so much kindness this past week…” Cadence carried on. “You helped me decorate the castle… you handed over your chance to impress me to my husband… you comforted me when I was hurt… you went out of your way to send for this dress…” Lapis’ eyes shot open, and Cadence smiled knowingly. “And most importantly… you resolved my issues with my husband.”
Cadence turned away from him, and looked out over the Crystal Empire. “Even loving me as much as you do, you threw away your perfect chance to woo me, not once, but twice, just so that I could be happy. That is the most selfless thing I have seen in quite some time.”
Lapis was completely speechless, and Cadence slowly turned back towards him. A faint blush appeared next to her loving smile as she spoke. “I… I love you too, Lapis Lazuli.”
This is impossible… Lapis thought to himself. “Cadence…”
Cadence continued to smile, as her eyes began filling with tears. “I’m sorry, Lapis. But… I can’t be with you.”
Lapis deflated, understanding dawning on him. There it is… The realized sadly.
“I do love you, Lapis.” Cadence continued. “But… I love Shining Armor as well. I can’t… I can’t leave him for you. I wish I didn't have to hurt you like this... Please… try to understand….”
Lapis watched as Cadence began to cry, and he forced himself to put on an understanding smile. “Your Majesty, I understand.” Cadence looked up at him. “I didn’t expect you to return my feelings at all. I’d never ask you to leave your husband for me.” Cadence’s smile returned, stronger than ever before. “My only question is… What happens now?”
Cadence wiped her eyes, and gave him a reassuring smile. “Now, we go back to the way we were. I go back to being your Empress, and you go back to being my bodyguard. This encounter will not have happened.”
Lapis nodded sadly. “I see… in that case…” He turned away, and started to trot away.
“Wait, Lapis!” Cadence called to him, and placed a hoof on his shoulder. Lapis tuned back around, and looked at her curiously. Cadence smiled lovingly at him, and then leaned in, and pressed her lips against his. Lapis' eyes shot open again, but he was more prepared this time, and he returned her kiss, all of his desires and emotions flowing out of him. They held their lips together for half of a minute, and then broke away. “Thank you, Lapis. For all you’ve done.” Cadence finished.
Lapis smiled lovingly at her, and then got down on his knees. “Good night, Mi Amore Cadenza.” He concluded, and then turned around, and returned to the castle.
As he was returning to the ballroom, Lapis heard a large noise outside of the castle. He ran over to the window, and gazed up at the sky. The Crystal Heart had shot its beams of light into the sky once again, but this time, the streams were rose, gold, pink, and a deep, deep, shade of blue.
As he gazed upon the beams of light, a genuine smile appeared on Lapis’ face, and tears of joy began falling down his cheeks. “I never knew…” He whispered, his voice dripping with awe. “I never knew these lights could be this beautiful…”
Lapis stopped to stare at the lights, and unbeknownst to him, Cadence did as well. The two watched in awe as their shared light spread across the sky, and then all across Equestria. They both smiled blissfully, as the Crystal Heart spread its light and love once again, knowing in their hearts whose light had caused it to shine so brightly that night.
