As the summer heat was beating down upon Canterlot, the royal sisters of the kingdom were currently enjoying a spot of lunch on one of the many balconies around Canterlot Castle. Celestia was currently eating one of the palace’s finest cakes while Luna sat opposite her at the small table. However, her little sister didn’t share the same excitement, only picking at the soft, gooey texture of the cake, obviously having something on her mind.
“Sister, this cake doesn’t exactly taste as good as you said it would be,” Luna said with a slightly curious look as her sister looked towards Luna with a shocked expression.
“Mfhurbabers,” Celestia replied, still eating, but giving her sister a questionable look.
“Uh… pardon?” Luna asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion.
Celestia quickly swallowed her food before speaking. “I said, what’s got you in such a bad mood sister? Usually you like this cake,” the alicorn stated with a curious look.
Luna sighed and sat back on the chair she was seated at. “I don’t know, sister, I think I just feel a tad useless around here sometimes,” she said, taking another bite of the cake from a levitated fork in front of her.
Celestia realed back slightly. “What ever do you mean, Luna? I thought you were enjoying all that was going on around Equestria?” she asked surprisingly.
Luna shrugged as she gulped down her meal. “I guess, but now everything's settled back down around here. I just feel like my purpose for being a princess only comes out at night and I have nothing to do during the day,” the mare explained, thinking back on her time in solitary on the moon. She remembered the long periods of when she’d looked down upon Equestria, thinking how fun it must be down there. It had been for a few months, but after the odd coronation and marriages that followed in her return, nothing had come up for Luna to tend to during her waking hours of the day.
“Well…” Celestia said, tapping her chin with a forehoof. “I could talk with some of the guards and get you to take over a few ponies in their duties for the day, how does that sound?”
“Pardon me, sister, but it sounds as boring as the sitting on the moon,” the alicorn replied with a heavy sigh. “I would prefer doing something entertaining,” Luna said with a hopeful tone.
Celestia thought for a moment before speaking again. “When I get bored, I usually take a trot around the palace; it clears my head, and gives me some time to think as well,” Celestia said happily. “Maybe you should take a stroll after you’ve finished eating.”
Luna took a few moments before she nodded her head. “That sounds as if it’s worth a shot, as long as I don’t die in this heat then I should be fine.”
Celestia chuckled and shook her head playfully. “Oh, Luna, lighten up a little. You never know, today might be the start of something new,” the alicorn said dreamily.
“Yeah… remind me not to gag to death either,” Luna said with a smirk, getting up and making her way out of the room.
Celestia only watched as her sister left with a smirk on her face. “If only you heard yourself talk, Lulu,” she said with another chuckle. Luna rolled her eyes as she left, making her way towards the large palace gardens for some relaxation.
As she wandered down the hallway towards the entrance to the castle’s gardens, the alicorn mare couldn’t help but think about Celestia’s cheesy line. There wasn’t really much a princess could do, and it wasn’t like she could really fit into the normal life. She’d outlive everyone for a start, but what else was there besides a normal job? Luna sighed; this was going to take a lot more thinking than she thought.
“Okay, I say fifty bits to whoever’s the first to reach Canterlot Square,” Spitfire shouted over to Soarin as the two Wonderbolts soared over the skies of Equestria. Both legendary flyers had clocked off from their morning training and were now looking for things to do.
Soarin thought the bet over in his head before turning to his rival team mate and nodding. “Yeah, okay. I accept your challenge.”
“Just don’t start crying when I beat you!” Spitfire hollered before shooting off into the distance with Soarin hot on her tail. The two Wonderbolts shot through the sky and towards the main city center of the most prestigious place in Equestria.
As Soarin followed Spitfire closely, the mare suddenly dropped downwards into the large city. Taking a gamble, the stallion followed her and soon both Wonderbolts were faced with a busy market street, full of stalls and ponies.
“Out of the way! Comin through! Ya snooze you lose guys!” Spitfire shouted as she swerved through the different stalls at a fast speed, causing a few ponies to hit the ground or fall over themselves in the chaos. Soarin wasn’t faring much better as he too dodged the different stands of items and produce as the two pegasi raced towards the finish line near the castle.
As they cleared the market place, Soarin began to pick up speed on the mare as the two became neck and neck towards the final few turns and stretches. Spitfire saw this and began to go on the attack, the mare began to push Soarin out of her way as the two neared the final stretch. However, she pushed the stallion too far off course, causing Soarin to lose balance of his wings. Before either could react, Soarin collided with Spitfire and both ponies were thrown off course. When they finally regained control of themselves, they were heading straight into the ground.
Luna was currently basking in the sun as she slowly made her way through the various trees and plants that were neatly cut and lined in their respective rows; the royal gardens were the highlight of the castle at this time of year. Her mind was currently wandering about in her head as she thought about her current life. Was there nothing at all that she could do to entertain herself with?
Usually in a normal life, Luna would be spending the day sitting through boring meetings about how someone’s market square isn’t as big as someone else's in Manehatten. She would then proceed to wait until she could raise the moon, but in between there were many hours in which she had nothing to do.
Suddenly, her thoughts were cut off when a thud shook the ground beneath Luna’s hooves. She quickly surveyed at the area around her for any signs of what could have caused this. Her eyes finally fell on the sight as she spotted two pegasus ponies who were currently face down in the dirt, a trail of mud having been carved out by their impact into the ground. Luna drew a questionable look before slowly breaking into a trot as she went over to them to help out.
“Aurgh,” Spitfire groaned, her voice muffled by the dirt she’d found herself face planted in. Soarin wasn’t faring much better, but managed to roll onto his back, taking big, deep breaths as he regained his energy and his consciousness. His vision was slightly hazy from the crash, but he could spot a blue figure coming closer towards him.
“Am… I dead?” Soarin asked himself, feeling like his brain had dislodged itself from his head.
Luna overheard the stallion and rolled her eyes playfully. “I don’t quite think you're in that predicament just yet,” she said with a smirk. Soarin rubbed his eyes with a forehoof as he fully regained his vision, seeing the Princess in full view nearly made his jaw drop.
“Well if we’re not dead, where are… we,” Spitfire started, but finished as she too rolled over and set her eyes on the goddess in front of her. There was an awkward silence that past for a few moments before Soarin finally took hold of the conversation.
“Princess, we are so sorry about your garden, please don’t chop us up into tiny pieces and feed us to the guard,” Soarin pleaded.
Luna stifled a laugh before replying. “Well I think all of our guards are not cannibalistic, so you are fine, however if you’re looking to pay some kind of compensation-”
“Soarin will pay all of it,” Spitfire stated quickly and with a smile before spreading her wings and taking off into the sky at full pelt. Soarin’s jaw did drop at this point as he watch the yellow spec head out of sight. He slowly turned around to Luna, sighing and accepting his fate.
“How many bits would you require, your highness?” he asked with a slightly sad tone in his voice.
“Oh, I don’t need money,” Luna said with a smile, and the stallion seemed to lighten up, but he quickly turned confused. The Princess knew what the stallion was about to ask and continued. “I could actually use something different. You see, while I’ve been back I’ve never had the opportunity to explore Canterlot and its places. Perhaps you could assist me in finding some entertainment?” she asked.
Soarin rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “Well... I mean I’m not really the best at showing ponies things, you know? I kinda don’t really know the area either.”
“Well in which case I’d say damages would be 4,000 bit-” Luna started.
“I’ll take you wherever you wanna go,” Soarin quickly replied as Luna smirked in response. The stallion blushed slightly in embarrassment towards the her. “So… what kinda place were you thinking of going then?” he asked curiously.
Luna pondered on the question for a few moments; she’d never really thought a situation like this would have occurred. “Um, how about a brothel?” she asked.
Soarin raised an eyebrow. “You mean a bar, right?” he asked.
Luna wasn’t sure of this. “Well, a place where a pony can go and enjoy a drink of some kind.”
Soarin nodded. “Well it’s midday... so you want me to show you a good cafe to go to? I know this one out in the town,” he said, pointing a hoof in its general direction.
Luna nodded happily. “Then we shall head to this cafe you speak of,” she said, holding out a hoof to help the stallion up. Soarin gladly took the hoof as he dusted himself off before turning to the alicorn.
“So, shall we go then?” Luna asked the stallion. Soarin smiled and nodded, trying to act on his friendliest behaviour.
Luna spread her wings and took off into the air as Soarin quickly followed. “So where is this fine place then?” she asked.
Soarin quickly looked around the area in the sky and spotted the place. “It’s just over there, come on, I’ll show you,” he said, flying off in the direction with Luna following. As they flew over town, Soarin could see the many ponies looking up at him, seeing the Princess following close behind.
“Do you usually get this many looks?” Luna asked.
Soarin shook his head. “Uh… I think they're all wondering why I’m with you,” he answered.
Luna grinned. “What, can a Princess not have a normal friend?” she asked curiously as the two neared their destination, which was only a short distance from the castle.
“I-I guess so, I mean… I didn’t think you really hung out with ponies,” Soarin said, slightly nervous as the two landed close to the cafe.
Luna nodded. “Yeah, mostly because I’ve never really adjusted to anything normal, but I’m willing to have a friend. One that might be willing to show me how to enjoy life without any freak shows happening or creatures trying to destroy Equestria.”
Soarin laughed. “I guess so, not every day you have to get up and stop villains or anything. I’m still trying to get my flying pattern back after that Tirek took all our flight away,” the stallion said as they both made their way up to the doors of the cafe.
Soarin opened the glass doors to reveal a very nicely kept cafe with cream walls and wooden tables; the place had a simple yet luxurious feel to it. There were a few ponies seated at a few of the chairs around the tables, one fiery maned mare in particular was giving the two a wide eyed expression.
“Uh… shoot! I just spent all my bits on this drink, sorry guys,” Spitfire said trying not to look nervous.
Soarin chuckled as he and Luna trotted over. “It’s okay Spit, Luna only wanted someone to show her around Canterlot. I suggested this would be a good place to start,” the stallion said happily as Luna nodded in response.
“So… no bits involved?” Spitfire asked. Soarin nodded. “Okay, take a seat then,” Spitfire said, offering the ponies to sit down, in which they did.
Luna leaned over to Soarin and whispered, “I thought you guys get paid a lot.”
Soarin nodded and replied, using the same quiet tone, “I know, it’s just Spitfire recently had to pay a fine.”
“No I didn’t Soarin!” Spitfire interjected. “I haven’t been avoiding taxes at all, I paid everything, the media are just lying to get money,” the mare said quickly, sipping on her cup of coffee. Luna held back her laughter as Soarin got up to go get some drinks. This was going to be one very good afternoon.
