Thousands of years ago, before equestria was founded, a small unicorn was born by the name Starswirl into a rich unicorn family. As the years passed his abilities grew until he was the most gifted unicorn in a long, long time. There came the day of a small, poor pegasi family coming to his villa, pleading to save their young filly's life.
Named Crystal, the small mare had been playing with her friends in the village center when they had dared her to jump over the open, dry well. Taking a running leap, wings tied behind her back so she couldn't cheat, she tripped over a rock at the last second and plummeted down the 100-hooves deep well, fighting against the rope all the day down.
Her friend Glass ran to Crystal's house and explained what happened to her parents. Flying as fast as a pegasus could go, they went to the village center, dived down the hole, scooped up the unconscious and bloody filly up, fuming at how her friend could force her to do such a dangerous thing.
Crystal had her skull fractured, a fever of 105, left hind leg horribly sprained, and both wings in tatters. After two days of trying to heal her by forcing herbal remedies down the still-unconscious filly's throat, and trying to bring her fever down by cutting away all of Crystal's shiny white mane and silver gray fur around her head, the filly entered critical condition. Acting fast, they had flown her to Starswirl's villa in the nearby richer village, and Starswirl commanded them to bring her into the lab and lay her on the science table. After a few dreadful minutes of him gathering a potion he had been working on for years, made out of the very mist of the rainbows, he quickly poured it on the small, frail looking filly's wounded areas.
Before their very eyes all of her wound healed themselves, bones set themselves by their own desire and her mane started to grow back. But something was changing about her; in place of her long, flowing white hair was a thick, shimmering mane in streaks of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, and her fur was no longer silver but seemed to insist on becoming a dark, ocean blue.Crystal woke up at once, screaming like a banshee for her mom and dad who she couldn't see at the time. After she calmed down, and all was double-checked, they flew home.
After she had grown up, she discovered that she had astounding flying abilities and amazing reaction time, seemingly all because of her still glowing mane and large, blue wings. She passed this magic onto her filly, who had even more powerful magic, and then her colt, and then his children and so on, each generation becoming more and more gifted until it came to the day that the gene seemed to stop. For 2000 years the line of pegasuses all forgot about their magical ancestors, until one day a mare is born...
