Celestia, Luna, and Cadence waited in the Royal Hall in Canterlot Castle to hear from Discord, hoping it would be soon. Luna stared out the window as her moon rose high into the sky, signaling the end to another day. She looked uneasy, but remained as composed as she could. Cadence sat next to Celestia as they conversed for plans to celebrate next year’s Crystal Fair. It took the edge off their minds, keeping them from worrying about the possible dangers to Equestria as Tirek grew stronger.
“Do you think that Twilight would like to host the opening ceremony?” Cadence asked.
“If I know my student well enough, she would be more than happy to do it,” Celestia answered.
“However she may feel it just as mundane as welcoming dignitaries,” Luna added.
“I doubt it sister,” Celestia retorted. “Twilight felt left out of the meeting. Seeing that the three of us attended and she also was asked to be there, it was like asking her to study a subject and only give her one book. She prides herself on being helpful and knowledgeable and it made her feel ashamed to have her talents wasted.”
“Then why ask her to come? Why would you, her teacher, ask her to come to such an important event and not let her in?” Luna asked accusingly.
“You know why, sister,” Celestia answered calmly. “If the three of us were to meet in one place, Twilight would be left without either of us to watch over her.” She stood and began walking to Luna. “You know exactly why we could not let her in. You know what is coming, and we all know it will crush her. It may do the same to us as well.”
“It just feels like we are using her,” Luna added, turning to her sister, taking one last look at her night before giving eye contact to her sister.
“Maybe we are,” Cadence finally spoke and joined the conversation, “but what if this is the best way to protect her. She is still new to her title after all.”
“What has changed so much in my thousand year absence?” Luna asked, beginning to feel angry. “Why can we not just tell her what is going on, what’s going to-“ a crashing sound of glass interrupted Luna’s speech.
“Excuse me ladies,” a familiar voice began. “I couldn't help but notice a little bit of tension in the air so I decided to-, well you get the idea.” The three of them turned to see Discord holding what was a mirror now shattered. “Guess that did the trick,” he smiled as he turned the broken mirror back to face him. Silent stares were his only answer. “Ah yes I do look handsome, but ladies, this isn’t about me after all.” A still frame with Discord’s face stayed inside the broken mirror frame now. He then threw it behind him, but it never hit the ground. Instead it turned into a rather large grasshopper and hopped away.
“Discord, have you subdued Tirek?” Celestia asked.
“Actually it’s funny you should ask,” Discord answered. “You see I overheard you talking about our dear Princess Twilight Sparkle,” he sounded unenthused when he said Twilight’s name, “and I couldn't help but notice there’s something missing to that fascinating new box they found. So I, being the gracious friend I am, helped them to find what the Tree of Harmony is doing to teach them as it did the two of you.” He pointed to Celestia and Luna. “However, Twilight is missing the vital key and without it, not only is the lesson not learned, but Tirek’s power will grow infinitely larger.”
“That is why we entrusted the task of taking him back to Tartarus,” Luna answered him standing tall.
“Yes but you do realize that the ponies that lose their magic will never get it back, right?” Discord was now smirking at Luna’s comment.
“Sometimes losses must be taken in order to assure a win.” Celestia firmly answered.
“Oh,” Discord mocked, “Like earlier? When you left Twilight Sparkle out of an important loop of sorts?”
“So,” Cadence sighed, “you know?”
“Know what?” Discord asked, smiling. “I’m sure I remember telling you I overheard you. That doesn't mean I know what,” he teleported to Celestia’s throne. “Ah yes, sitting here would be nice wouldn’t it?” He said to himself then teleporting behind the three alicorns. “You know, Tirek gave me quite an offer and I’m not sure I want to refuse it.”
“You wouldn't!” Cadence shouted.
“Oh but I’m the embodiment of chaos itself my dear. I can’t just refuse an upstanding offer to rip everything out of balance,” Discord answered as he balanced himself on Cadence’s horn. “I’m going to take his offer and try to help Twilight rediscover her element of friendship and what it means. With that, the tree of harmony will give us a last one shot to fix everything.”
“Are you positive this is a good plan?” Celestia asked with concern.
“Only fools are positive, Celestia,” he said with a wicked grin.
“So you are not even sure that this plan will work?” Luna began to be hot with Discord’s impudence.
“Oh my,” Discord said swirling Luna’s mane in his claw, “somepony seems to not like this plan one bit.”
“You would expect us to trust in you?” Luna shouted as she shoved Discord away.
“Careful,” he grinned maliciously, “tempers can lead you to a bad place, Princess Luna.”
“Do not threaten me foul thing.”
“I most certainly resemble nothing fowl,” Discord said as he transformed himself into a chicken.
“Discord,” Celestia’s voice rumbled and Discord transformed back into himself. “I am sorry but there is too much at stake to allow this to continue on a hunch of yours. There is a possibility that she is not ready yet.”
“A possibility that she isn't ready, or you?” Discord asked as he narrowed his eyes “Which do you think it is, Celestia? You’re going to have to let the girl grow up one of these days. Her parents did, and I think it might be your turn.”
“That is not the matter we’re discussing, Discord,” Celestia began to raise her voice. “Now find and take Tirek back to his prison in Tartarus.”
“You see,” Discord began doing a moon walk, “Tirek made me quite the offer, as I explained before, and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun for me. I didn't come back here to ask your permission. I just came to give you a heads up. I already accepted his offer and we’re hosting quite a few gigs here in the next couple of hours so he’ll need me. Ta ta!”
"Discord," Celestia shouted, but he was already gone. Now, her eyes burned with anger. “I’m sending for Twilight.”
