Like Clockwork
Time
Load Full StoryThe creation of life, the world, the universe. The origins of every mystery ever conspired.
I was there. Alone.
Tick.
Millennia pass and new life emerges.
I watch them, the newly created species. I took a liking to one in particular. The ponies. Earth, pegasi, unicorns. They are all so different, but at the same time the same. They fought with each other in their home, a land of frozen wastes.
Their lands slowly became inhospitable and so they migrated to a new land. The ice of their hearts started to infest their new home as it did their old. The three basic tribes finally united and their paradise was found. A paradise of peace and harmony, undisturbed by the global conflicts proceeding elsewhere between the other species.
Everyday was like the previous, the days turned as the gears of life slowly ticked. I refused to watch any longer from my perch. I swooped down and took the reigns of their beloved Equestria from the ponies.
Murphy’s law became evident in their everyday lives. Everything constantly changed. A new randomness that satisfied my thirst for something new
Eventually the ponies tried fighting back. I even helped them without their knowing. They rolled the dice as I rounded the edges. Regardless, their attempts were futile against me. Harmony has no place in chaos.
Tock.
A new species of pony emerged. Ones the ponies dubbed, ‘alicorns’.
However, only two existed. I watched as the two of them formed a resistance. I made it certain that the dice would roll in their favor. I led the white one to my newly formed, ‘elements of harmony’, through her dreams. She found the elements and my plan proceeded as expected.
The elements are not what they were made out to be. The elements are not harmonious, rather they are chaotic. Each use brings upon an unpredictable result and the elements themselves can be used, but they cannot be tamed.
The two of them wielded the elements and confronted me. I laughed in their face at my plan’s success. They activated the elements and before I could be hit with the blast of power it releases, I left a stone statue in my place. I released the chaos upon their world and for thousands of years I watched again. They believed I was defeated when really I tweaked their land from my perch once again.
One can only rule everything for so long before it becomes a chore rather than a pleasure. I had instead decided to let these two ponies take control of Equestria and tweak small things to cause bouts of chaos rather than having control over everything.
The clock never stops.
The two of them ruled side-by-side. The white one claimed the day and the other the night. As the years passed by, I whispered thoughts of inadequacy and betrayal into the blue one’s dreams. I gave her the power to traverse the dreamscape and as she accepted these powers she also accepted the nightmare that came with them.
Every day she became troubled in her sleep. My constant voice telling her of her sister’s day and her unappreciated night. I promised to resolve it by requesting she use the power of the dreamscape to create eternal night. She accepted.
The dreams she once created became nightmares. Her coat became black as the void. She and her sister fought that night. Their castle became shambles and eventually the white one wielded the elements and banished her sister to the moon.
History repeats.
The white one ruled for a thousand years alone. She grew close to some ponies but they always passed in a blink of her eye. Time causes centuries to become a drop in the bucket for those who are immortal.
On the thousandth year, her sister returned in her corrupted form. This time, instead of being banished by her sister, the elements were wielded by a group of six ponies. The elements relieved her of her curse. A true shame if you had asked me, but again, the elements cannot be predicted.
I decided to once again bring about my appearance and I ‘released’ myself from the stone prison. I created my own little wonderland of chaos in the new element-wielders home of Ponyville. I played a game with those wielders by creating a maze of sorts.
The wielder of magic had her fellow wielders corrupted, but they pushed through. Watching the ponies stumbling through the maze was truly worth waiting for. The activated the elements and once more I was cast into my fake prison of stone.
Under the white alicorn’s orders, they ‘released’ me to try and tame me. However, one does not simply tame chaos. I played along with their act. Their cruel un-filtered masks of hate did nothing to disturb me, however, one of the wielders, a yellow pegasus stared upon me with compassion.
I was truly surprised and over time I found myself with a friend in the pegasus. I tried convincing her to join me in producing chaos, but she declined. She became disappointed in my small acts of rebellion and I found myself in a position I’ve never been in before.
Continue creating chaos for dull the edge of being immortal and lose the only friend I’ve ever had, or give up dissonance and keep my only friend?
I chose the latter.
Life begins anew.
My friendship with her kept my whims in check and over several conflicts I slowly grew until I finally found the ‘magic of friendship’ as the purple unicorn had once dubbed it. I lived by Fluttershy for years to come, we grew to love each other and I took her as my bride.
I used my powers for the good of all. Though, that didn’t stop me from the occasional prank. With Fluttershy and her friends my life changed for the better.
Till Death taps the clock.
Being immortal is a curse. One bestowed upon me because of my natural energie’s revolution against death itself.
I stood by and watched as my love grew frail. Upon the day of her passing, I shed my first tears. I cursed myself for my eternal life. For the peace I’ll never keep. I knew that day if I was to love again my heart would once again break.
During my mourning the white alicorn, Celestia, approached me. She told of friends she made during her time and the loves she watched wither. She told me of her destination of the unknown. Our journey never ends and the end is not what we should wait for.
Rather, we should make the journey count. Love, live, for the memories of those who pass will forever live with you as time rusts the knowledge of their existence.
She showed me compassion I had only last seen with Fluttershy. I learned to love again, my once play-thing became my companion for the eternal life ahead.
So here we are, together.
