Applejack loves trains. If she wasn't so dedicated to her work, she would probably spend most of her time riding along in one, watching the countryside roll by. So when she encounters one she's never seen before arriving in Ponyville, naturally she's curious. The train only has one passenger though, and considering how much he's about to shake her world, she's going to be glad there weren't two.

Humans are strange creatures to Equestrian ponies. Hints of their past presence show up in pony culture, but in such subtle ways that nopony has ever noticed. After finding out that ponies of some kind exist in the human-dominated universe she had pursued Sunset Shimmer into, Twilight wants to find out if there were ever any humans in Equestria, and if so, why there aren't any now.

Celestia is in a terrible predicament, and one she would abhor the thought of her little ponies, especially Twilight, finding out about. The device she and Luna built to track the flow of magic across Equestria to facilitate its management reveals that, absent any villains to control it or vessels to contain it, Dark Magic is on the loose and polluting the world, confirming the complaints presented to them by the Duke and Duchess on their previous visit. That meant that another villain would either have to be released from Tartarus, but Celestia couldn't think of one that wouldn't cause the same amount of damage that containing the Dark Magic would prevent. She shuddered to think of it, but another vile solution may have to be resorted to.

After centuries of titanic effort, the Dazzlings find themselves in Equestria purely by accident, having tried to hide behind a certain statue from the police. Sunset follows them through the portal after telling her friends to find a way to keep anybody else from stumbling in after them. Once through, it doesn't take her long to find them, as the four of them are effectively trapped in the large closet the mirror had been stored in -as ponies. Sunset started to wonder why they weren't Sirens but then she remembered, and was now wondering how she was going to deal with three crying mares that like her, were ex-villains.
