Twilight was sitting in her castle lounge room one day when she came up with an idea, a spell that made mirror pool duplicates refrain from their destructive behavior. While brainstorming on how to make it work she came up with another brilliant plan. She could make the duplicate the opposite gender! When she tests out her theory she ends up with an alicorn exactly like her, save the gender, mane-cut, and some instincts. She introduces him to her friends as the newly named Dusk Shine, but things don't usually go as planned with Twilight's experimental spells. Dusk soon gets stuck in the gears of the mares' friendship and ends up helping Twilight's friends in a way that could put the universe at risk…okay that was exaggerated, but it gets messy.
