Chapters It didn't have a chance to go off. Thunderlane quickly shut off his alarm before it began its insistent chant. His hoof rested there, while the rest of him didn't.
Guess I should get up , he groaned. Despite his aching body, he rose from the bed. At least he didn't wake up in a cold sweat this time. At least he was safe.
Collecting his thoughts, he searched around his rather vacant room, making sure nothing was out of place. Satisfied, he went off to shower, hoping the shock from the cold water might wake him up enough to pay the Doctor his weekly visit.
Thunderlane stepped out of the shower and quickly dried off, thankful the water on the mirror prevented him from seeing himself. Finishing with his teeth, he quickly spat out the toothpaste and hurried out of the bathroom. With his tasks complete and smile on his face, he rushed out the door to quickly be done with the day.
The beautiful rays if the spring sun met his face, and he basked in its radiance. He happily trotted forward, the snow sending delightful chills through his fur. He slowed his pace, feeling no real rush as his hooves met the soil. He smiled at a passing friend as he cantered over the frozen lake. Thunderlane noticed his icy blue friend had a striking resemblance to himself.
Then he screamed.
Thunderlane found himself laying down in his doorway, head throbbing. He looked around frantically. No pony to be seen.
I'm still awake right? he worried. He cantered on, each step slightly quicker than the last. He kept a vigilant eye on its citizens without looking directly at them.
Everything seemed to be in order now. Lyra and BonBon chatting at a shaded table, Derpy making her rounds, the various stalls open despite the early hour, and he was sure he could find Rainbow napping on a cloud above somewhere. And she says I'm lazy, he huffed. All he had to do was get to Ponyville Medical, have his chat with the Doctor, and get home quickly so he could seclude himself without worry. Now it was getting there with his head still intact that was the issue. He then felt snow fall softly upon his muzzle.
“Hey Thunderlane.” Came the voice of Blossomforth, followed shortly by a tap on the shoulder. Thunderlane froze. With a deep breath he turned around to face the mare.
Only to face an empty street. His heart could have beat Rainbow Dash in a race. He slowed his breathing, regaining his fractured composure, and continued on his way. Turning around he now found himself on the ground, staring up at the mare in question, confusion clear on her face. Thunderlane could feel his eyes momentarily lose focus before he lifted himself back up.
“Are you okay?” She asked. Thunderlane had calmed himself slightly, taking solace that she was saying something more than a passing greeting.
“Uhh y-yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. Just tripped a bit, no biggie.” He stuttered.
“You sure? You seemed to collapse. Oh wow you have some heavy bags under your eyes too Thunderlane! Is something wrong?” Blossomforth asked, concern evident in her query.
“Everything's fine. You don't need to worry 'bout me.” He defended.
“We really should get you to see a doctor though--” She started.
“I'll be fine , I'm heading there anyway.” He soothed. When did she start caring all of a sudden? He wondered. He quickly moved past her before she could ask what for. Sighing, he made the final leg of his journey in silence and, thankfully, peace.
Nurse Redheart knew his face all too well. She quickly ushered him in and showed the way to Dr. Stable's office, even though he could have easily found it himself. The beige unicorn was working through a patient's file by the time he walked in. Thunderlane didn't bother with formalities, sitting down on the opposite couch.
“Good to see you Thunderlane. You punctuality is getting better, your actually early this time.” Stable stated.
“Early? I thought this was when they actually started.”
“It is. However, this is early by your standards.”
“Thanks Doc.”
“Now let's get down to business,” He stated, putting away the folder, “did you sleep well last night?”
“Nah, I didn't sleep at all.”
“Did you take you medication?”
“...No.”
Stable sighed. “And why not?”
“Because I didn't want to. I didn't wanna dream.”
“Afraid of seeing Frostbite?”
Thunderlane groaned, ashamed he would admit to something like that. “...Yeah...”
“Thunderlane, this is starting to affect your physical health as well. Look at yourself. You look like you haven't slept in days.”
That's 'cause I haven't.
“Your little brother is coming over tomorrow, isn't he?” Stable asked, changing the subject to a, hopefully, brighter one.
“Yeah, Rumble'll be stayin' with me while my parents are on vacation.”
“That must be exciting.” He stated. Thunderlane simply nodded, and an awkward silence greeted them. Stable grew more concerned with every visit. With Thunderlane's mental health slowly declining over the past seven years, it has taken drastic effects. It's a wonder he's never been to the asylum. At least Stable felt like he was helping in that regard, but these visits honestly seem to make things worse. He was trying his damnedest to make sure Thunderlane didn't get committed, but he felt like he was the only one trying as well.
“Well, is there anything else I should know?” Stable asked.
“Yeah, actually. When I walked outside today I woke up in doorway.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like, I was walking outside, the sun shining down and the snow beneath my hooves, then I'm on a frozen lake with some guy, then I wake up in the doorway.”
“Who was the pony you were on the lake with?”
“Dunno, didn't get a good look at him. He seemed to look like me but with...my colors...reversed...” Thunderlane mumbled as a look of concentrated terror erupted over his features.
“It was Frostbite, wasn't it?”
Thunderlane nodded grimly, mouth still agape.
“Everything is fine Thunderlane. Frostbite can't get you here. Just think of the white mare and everything will be fine remember?”
He did as Stable ordered, the image of his only solace washing over him, cleansing him of the fear. He calmed, barely.
“Did anything else happen?”
“A friend of mine shouted at me, but from behind. I look back and...nothin'. I turn back around, find myself on the ground, and there she is, plain as day. She also seemed worried, and talked to me more than usual.”
“Really?” Stable asked as he leaned forward, thankful they now had a conversation piece to divert away from the dreams. “and is it strange that she was worried?”
“Well, I guess not. It's just...we haven't really talked in awhile. I guess it makes sense if I look like crap though.”
“And who is this friend of yours?”
“Her name's Blossomforth. We've been friends since we were foals, but as time went on....well...we just kinda drifted away.”
“And did you want this to happen?”
“No I...! No I didn't. It just happened and I didn't really do anything 'bout it, I couldn't.”
“Why not?”
“It was 'round 'bout the time this...” Thunderlane made a gesture towards his head, “...started.”
“Ah, I see.” Stable said. He stayed there, contemplating something. “Could it have been your reclusive nature that drove her away?”
Thunderlane almost protested, but the inquisitive look the doctor shot at him made him ask the question himself. “Maybe...”
“Another thing Thunderlane. In your dreams you say there is a white mare who sometimes helps you. Who makes the dream easier to handle?”
Thunderlane nodded.
“Is this mare Blossomforth?”
“...Yeah...” He said, growing agitated. He just wanted to drop the subject there.
“...Do you have feelings for this mare?” Stable asked, cautiously. Thunderlane rose to his hooves, freezing Stable an icy glare. A glare he was slowly getting used to.
“I'm going home Doc.” He stated as he stormed out of the door and out of sight.
“Very well...” Stable sighed, though he was already alone. His hostility was getting worse.
Blossomforth stared at the stallion trotting away, incredibly confused and rather worried at what she had witnessed. She hated seeing Thunderlane like the way he was, but this was the first time in awhile they had actually interacted. It was one of the few times Thunderlane didn't choose to avoid her. She tried to push her concern out her head as she went on with her day, but she knew something was terribly wrong. She shook her head, a little agitated at herself.
This was Thunderlane! He was her oldest friend, even if he did kind of push her away. Well he wasn't pushing her away this time. Blossomforth had an obligation to find out what was going on and help him any way she could.
But where to start? She hadn't seen where he had left. Sighing, she left for the only reliable source of information she could think of, and headed off to find Lyra and BonBon.
Thunderlane had finally made it. It had taken him a few years, but he finally made it home. With a smile on his face, he went inside, happy to be away from the icy winds outside. He quickly went to his room and covered himself in a comforter, before seating himself at his desk. At his desk was an old journal, untouched for centuries. He just couldn't wait to make another entry. Before he could get started, however, he had to make some tea.
With his nightly refreshment in hoof, he eagerly dove into the novel in front of him. He raced through the blank pages, enjoying the tale with great admiration. Sighing to himself, he finally decided to retreat to his bed, still unsure why he sat down at the empty desk. He fell asleep almost instantly, ignoring the broken cup on the floor, and the howling blizzard outside.
Blossomforth trotted her way through the town, searching for the unicorn - earth pony duo of Lyra and BonBon. Lyra had managed to find her instead, and beckoned her over to their shaded table. Blossomforth was glad having to see some familiar faces.
“How's it going Blossomforth?” Lyra asked. She smiled at her unicorn friend in return.
“Nothing really, I was just wondering if you two could help me figure something out.”
“Like what?” BonBon asked, taking a sip of her shake.
“It's about Thunderlane. He's been acting really strange lately, and it's starting to freak me out.” She explained. At the mention of the gray pegasus, BonBon's features mutated into a scowl, while Lyra's remained a friendly smile.
“You mean that crazy bastard?” BonBon hissed. Blossomforth looked at her, disgusted at the insult, while Lyra gave her a disapproving look
“Don't gotta be so rude Bon.” The unicorn scolded.
“It's true and you know it! He's dangerous! I'm surprised he's able to stay here in his condition!” She spat.
“Bon!”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?!” Blossomforth demanded, not willing to let this mare insult her oldest friend any further. BonBon was about to speak again, only to have Lyra summon a zipper on her mouth and zip it shut. She sighed in exasperation.
“It's nothing. Are you two friends or something?” She asked, turning to the pegasus.
“Yeah, since we were foals. It's just today was the first time I've actually talked to him in...well...years really. He seemed incredibly stressed out, and wouldn't tell me why.” Blossomforth admitted. Lyra thought for a moment.
“All I really know is that he sees the doctor like once a week, I don't know what for though. Maybe Cloudchaser and Flitter would know.” Lyra stated, turning over to BonBon. “You gonna behave now?” She asked motherly. BonBon frowned at her as the zipper disappeared.
“Alright, well, thanks Lyra.” She said and she took her leave.
“Not a problem!” Lyra shouted back, before asking BonBon why so disliked Thunderlane so much.
Blossomforth hated the idea of asking those to help, especially if Thunderlane was involved. Those flirtatious sisters always got on her nerves, and the way they treated him was despicable. She let out an agitated sigh, guessing she had no other options in getting the answers she wanted.
She found the two perched on a cloud, laying lazily about. She landed upon their cloud and cleared her throat, causing both of them to see her.
“Oh hey there Blossomforth.” Flitter said gingerly.
“What are you doing here?” Her sister asked, completely uninterested.
Blossomforth let a breath she had been holding. “I need your help with something,” She tensed, “it's about Thunderlane.”
The sisters' eyes lit up at the mention of the gray pegasus. Blossomforth may have not seen much of Thunderlane, but with these two she certainly heard about him. They had affectionately targeted him countless times, which irritated the hell out of her.
Agitation aside, she had a job to do.
“What's with him?” Flitter asked.
“I was wondering if you two know anything about his weekly doctor visits.”
Cloudchaser must have seen something was up, as she began orbiting the white mare. “And why do you wanna know so bad? Hm?”
“Because I'm his friend and I want to help him, rather than stalk him constantly.” She jabbed.
“You're his friend? How come we never see you with him then?” Flitter countered.
It was a wondrous miracle how Blossomforth managed to contain her anger.
“Yeah, if you were his friend, you would know he has troubling sleeping. So he goes there to get some drugs.” Cloudchaser briefed, still flying around her.
And I really don't wanna know how they found out he has trouble sleeping , she seethed.
“Thanks.” She hissed through gritted teeth, before taking off.
She found herself back home, still rather pissed at the sisters bragging about having knowledge of Thunderlane's issues, but doing nothing to aid him. The only thing that made her more angry was that she had her answer now, but had no idea how to help. Simply pestering him about his well-being is probably something his doctor already did. She really had no idea how to handle it.
She settled to wait for tomorrow and see if she couldn't get her old friend back, but right now she only wanted to nap.
The insistent knocking woke Thunderlane up the next morning. He sighed happily, knowing that he both woke up from slumber, and couldn't remember his dreams. Today was off a great start. He sniffled and sneezed over the edge of his bed. Okay, maybe a good start. He sure as hell didn't want to get sick, but if it got him some sleep the it was okay with him. Groggily, he stumbled over top the door, a small smile etched on his face. Before he could properly open the door a silver flash knocked him to ground, choking him with its tiny hooves.
“Thunderlane!” Rumble shouted, ecstatically latched around his neck.
“Get...off...me.” Thunderlane pleaded. The little colt complied and stared in awe up at his brother. Thunderlane shook his head and looked behind him.
“Is it just you and the bags?” He asked. Rumble nodded excitedly.
“Uh-huh. Mom and Dad already left for Trottingham.” He announced.
Nice , the elder brother thought sarcastically, don't even make sure the poor kid gets here safe. He sighed. He didn't really expect anything else.
“Well c'mon kiddo. These bags aren't gonna unpack themselves.”
“But it would be really cool if they did!”
“Oh, the bits I would pay for that.” Thunderlane joked, rousing laughter from his kin.
If Thunderlane's parents were off to Trottingham, then Rumble would be staying with him for quite a awhile. For first time in a long while, he was thankful for the fact. It had been a long time since they had spent time together, or at least for this long. A simple fact made itself clear to him, before retreating back into his mind; if Rumble was here, his nightmares could, and would, worsen. Rumble brought him out of the dark contemplation and into another one.
“Hey Thunder. I heard Mom and Dad talking about how you have trouble sleeping sometimes. Is it true?” He asked, a look of pure innocence and ignorance on his face.
Thunderlane sighed, unpacking the last of Rumble's things. “Yeah, it is. But it's nothing to worry about. It only happens every now and then.”
“What happens?”
“I...Sometimes I just can't sleep.”
“But how do you wake up then?”
Thunderlane couldn't help but smirk. “I don't. I just get up like I did wake up.”
Rumble's face contorted in confusion, not understanding the concept of insomnia.
“So if Mom and Dad are gonna be gone a week and a half, do you need to start goin' to school here?” He asked.
Rumble shook his head. “Nope, we're on spring break.”
Thunderlane nodded, rather satisfied he wouldn't have to deal with school again, even indirectly.
“Well, since I can't think of anything to do, wanna head to Sugarcube Corner?” He suggested.
Rumble was out the door quicker then Thunderlane thought possible. Coughing into his foreleg, he followed, hoping Rumble wasn't already there.
Blossomforth cantered lazily throughout Ponyville. The afternoon was well underway, and her day was incredibly uneventful thus far. She had no new information on Thunderlane, and when she tried to pay him a visit he wasn't there.
A flier interrupted her thoughts as in landed upon her face. She peeled it off and looked it over.
“Mandatory meeting for all Ponyville Pegasai?” She read aloud. She looked up and noticed Rainbow Dash dropping identical fliers all over the town.
“Library tonight! Be cool or be mule!” She announced as she practically dumped the contents of her bag on the ponies. Blossomforth looked at the flier once more before tucking it under her wing. She knew Thunderlane would be there, she could talk to him then. But what would she do in the meantime?
Evening came around rather quickly for her tastes. She trotted inside as Rainbow Dash ushered everyone in. Once in the crowd, she began to maneuver her way around to try and find the gray pegasus. However, Rainbow decided to start up almost immediately after her search began.
The lights give in to darkness, and she was all but blind. A projector came to life, landing on a presentation screen on the other side of the room. It started playing some outdated educational film discussing the importance of rainwater, and how every city in Equestria must do heir part to help Cloudsdale. Or something along those lines. She was too busy searching for Thunderlane in vain.
The lights came back on, catching the white mare's attention. Rainbow Dash hovered at the front, pulling down some chart and lecturing about some record set by Fillydelphia. Blossomforth's attention was still on her current objective. She absentmindedly heard somepony cough, however it stopped the Rainbow's speech.
“That coughing better be from a popcorn kernel, Thunderlane.” Rainbow threatened, pointing an accusing hoof somewhere in the front of the crowd. “Nopony's getting sick on my watch.”
Good, now she knew he was here, at least. Blossomforth would just have to wait after this boring meeting to catch him.
After one final rally of confidence, the ponies began to take their leave. Being near the back of the crowd, Blossomforth was one of the first to exit the library. She waited outside, hoping to catch the gray pegasus on his way out. Sure enough, he came out while a few others flew over him. Thunderlane had looked considerably better than the before, even sporting a contented smile on his face.
“Hey Thunderlane.” She greeted. The gray pegasus turned to her and trotted over.
“Oh uh, hey Blossomforth. W-What are you doin' here?” He asked, nervously glancing away.
“Just attending the mandatory meeting like we were supposed to.” She said simply.
“Oh, yeah. Think we can beat that record?” He asked, striking up conversation.
“Maybe, but Thunderlane you sure you're okay? After we bumped into each other yesterday I kinda got worried. Why did you have to visit the doctor anyway?” She questioned.
Thunderlane was taken aback, surprised by her sudden interest. “Uh, just for a...” He shook a hoof dismissively, “thing. Like I said it's nothin' worry about.” He finished, coughing into his foreleg away from her.
“You're not getting sick like Rainbow Dash said, are you?” Blossomforth worried, taking a step closer.
Thunderlane rubbed his hoof across his muzzle, sniffling. “Nah I'm fine.”
Blossomforth remained unconvinced, but at least he looked a lot better than he did the other day. She took comfort in that fact. “So when are you gonna be at the track tomorrow?”
Thunderlane hadn't given it much thought. “I dunno. I wanna bring my little brother along though, so maybe later in the morning.”
She couldn't help but tease him a bit. “Just so you can sleep in, you lazy bum?”
“Hey I'm not lazy!” He protested, provoking a giggle from the mare.
“Oh, I know. So you're bringing your little brother tomorrow? I don't think I've ever met him.”
“No, I don't think you have.” The gray pegasus look thoughtful, searching for a memory that wasn't there. “Well cool, he always likes meeting new ponies.”
“Alright, see you tomorrow Thunderlane.”
“Yeah, see ya...”
Thunderlane eagerly walked into the house, thankful Blossomforth was kind enough to keep him away from the cold. She couldn't stay, however, and the alicorn quickly took off to some unknown destination. He wanted her to stay, but his voice wouldn't reach her through the hail.
It's not like she left him utterly alone at least. Just the simple sight of her brighten his day, and now she was offering him safety. The house had been left prepared for him. The beautiful furniture covered in mild, the bile coated rugs, and the sickly corpses burning in the fire. It really was a lovely place, and even though he felt a grave plague infesting him, he had never felt safer.
He hastily and hungrily finished his meal of expired food, ready for Blossomforth's return. Sure enough, the alicorn made it home covered in snow, but quickly shook it off as she laid down near him as he rested his mangled head amongst the filth.
“How did you get this place?” Thunderlane asked. She smiled.
“You gave it to me, when you were older. I'd thought it'd only be fair to share this shelter with you after that act of generosity.” She explained. Thunderline grinned happily, basking in the beautiful scent of rot and decay.
“Did you know it never snows during a plague? They say the mind is clearest when diseased.” She said.
“Really?” Thunderlane asked. The door behind them swung open. A pale cyan stallion stood almost camouflaged against the raging blizzard outside. Snow billowed in slightly, only to melt away when in came in contact with the corpse-fire's light.
Thunderlane knew this stallion, and knew what he brought. His coat as blue and pale as those unfortunate to die in his winter torrent, his eyes as white as the canvas of madness he painted upon, his mane as black as his namesake.
“Frostbite.”
There's Safety In Sickness
Thunderlane let out a dreadful groan as he felt the full impact of the floor rushing to wish him a good morning. His lack of consciousness now coupled with a pounding headache did not improve his feelings for this morning. He stood up, still dizzy from both his slumber and the collision, and peered outside the window, gauging how far along Celestia's sun was on its path. Once again, he groaned.
Blossomforth is gonna give me so much crap for this, he thought. Looking back at his bed, rather mournfully, he gave his wings a shrug of defeat and trotted downstairs. No nightmares. Can't really complain bout that, he mused, sneezing before seeing that his brother had already gotten a bowl of cereal.
“Hey Thunderlane!” Rumble greeted.
“Hey kiddo.” The elder responded, debating about how to start his day.
“So what are we doing today?”
“Well,” he began, “we're gonna head over to track here in a bit. But I need to take a shower and get a bowl myself first.” Rumble lack of response was his cue. With a definitive nod, Thunderlane took off upstairs, ready to wash off the filth and, hopefully, this cold.

Thunderlane stopped for a minute. Something on the very fringe of his mind was trying to contact him. Some old memory perhaps. What was that line from? He could have sworn it came from...Blossomforth?
Thunderlane simply shook his head, figuring the thoughts would wash off in the shower.
Thunderlane sniffled as they raced to where all the flying pegasai were headed, Rumble following close behind. His little brother quickly buzzed ahead of him.
“You're not getting sick are you?” He asked, genuinely concerned.
“Nah, I'm fine. C'mon, just over there.” He smiled, pointing a hoof at the rather large crowd from in and around the large dirt oval. The two of them were quickly spotted by Blossomforth.
“There you two are. When you said 'late' I didn't think this late in the morning. It's already noon.” The white mare teased.
“Yeah-yeah.” Thunderlane dismissed, barely containing his smirk. Rumble looked up at Blossomforth in confusion.
“Oh yeah. Blossomforth, this is Rumble. Rumble this is Blossomforth, an old friend of mine.” Thunderlane stated.
“You don't look that old.” Rumble stated matter-of-factly, eyebrow raised.
The white mare giggled. “Thanks, I'm glad somepony thinks so.” She said, casting a false, accusing glare at Rumble's older brother. Thunderlane shot her an annoyed look.
Soon enough, Rainbow started whipping everyone into shape. Blossomforth and Thunderlane were quickly separated to two different activities. The mare was busy stretching while the stallion was caught trotting laps around the track. He silently cursed his little brother, envious he wouldn't have to participate in any of these exercises, only watch them from the sidelines. Thunderlane was starting to break a sweat. Damn I'm outta shape, he cursed. However, the tangle of limbs Blossomforth managed to find herself in distracted from his bodies pleas for mercy. As he was about to pass her again, Rainbow was looking over everyone's progress.
“...Maybe a little too much flexibility Blossomforth. Uh, somepony give Blossomforth a hoof. Let's see some faster trotting Thunderlane. Good pace Silverspeed.” She said as she hovered by her athletes. The pegasus did as he was asked and picked up his pace, however reluctantly.
He wasn't entirely sure when, but at some point Rainbow Dash had taken off. Everyone noticed and took it as a sign for a break. After collapsing upon the ground in a heap of sweat and exhausted muscle, Thunderlane noticed Blossomforth was still, literally, in a bind. He sighed, but held a triumphant smile as he cantered over to her.
“Doing okay there Blossomforth?” He teased, already looking for a way to undo her knot of legs. Blossomforth simply groaned, again trying in vain to untangle herself alone. “You must be one hell of a colt magnet, being able to bend your legs like that.”
“I am not!” She defended, before realizing what that implied. She grew even more embarrassed at Thunderlane's laugh. She did notice, however, she was doing what she set out to do. She was helping him, if at her own expense. He was having fun, he was her friend again. Blossomforth smiled slightly as Thunderlane managed to slip a hind leg out from under her chin, ultimately saving her from her own limbs.
Eventually Rainbow Dash returned, and began to inform to group what the plan was for today. It didn't matter to him what the details were, it was just exercise, exercise and more exercise. With a sprinkle of training here and there. She dispersed to group to get ready for some flight drills when Thunderlane noticed Ponyville's Librarian, Twilight, and her little dragon friend fiddling with some strange fan.
“Now just what the hay is that?” He thought out loud as he slowly cantered over. Cloudchaser and Flitter had beat him to her, but had the same question in mind. Soon, a crowd was forming around them, all wondering just what this brainy little unicorn and her draconic brother were up to.
“What exactly does this machine do?” Cloudchaser asked, pointing a hoof at her inquiry.
“This,” Twilight began, rather proud to be presenting such a machine, “is an anemometer. It measures your accelerated velocity and translates it into wing power. Thus gauging you cumulative H2O antigravitational potential.” Everyone around simply looked confused. “Any other questions?”
Flitter perked up. “Yeah,” she turned to Spike, “what exactly does this machine do?”
“It tells you how fast you're flying and how strong your wings are.” The little dragon explained rather simply. There were murmurs of understanding throughout the crowd, and Thunderlane wondered just how more intelligent that dragon must have been than him, considering his company.
“Well that's an interesting little thing. Wanna place bets who's faster?” Blossomforth challenged, trying to stifle a cough mid-sentence. The stallion had almost forgotten about her competitive side after all these years.
Twilight's head perked up over the crowd at the sound, levitating a can of disinfectant. “Is that you again, Thunderlane?” She accused, floating the can over to him and spraying several times. “Please, we need to keep a germ-free environment.”
Thunderlane dodged a blast from the can. “It wasn't me, it was Blossomforth.” He protested, extending a hoof at the perpetrator.
Rainbow Dash dove in front of Twilight with a disapproving look on her face. “Don't worry Twilight,” she began, “Thunderlane's just cookin' up an excuse to spend Tornado Day in bed.” She beckoned him over. “Why don't you come over here and be our first test flyer, Thunderlane?”
Thunderlane simply rolled his eyes angrily. Always being accused of something or another. He threw an irritated glare at Blossomforth once she started to giggle at his misfortune. Nevertheless, he took his orders and flew off to the starting line as Twilight set up the anemometer. It's been awhile since I've flown like this, he realized. Let's hope I'm not too out of shape. His wings beat furiously behind him before he took off. Every fiber of his being was thrust into his acceleration. His form bolted past Twilight's fan, its blades spinning as if a storm flew by. Thunderlane stopped at the end of the track, slightly winded. Not bad for a few months out of practice, he grinned.
“We have 9.3 wing power.” Twilight announced. The crowd quickly swarmed around him and showered him in praise. Cloudchaser even rubbed his head, which he had no objections to. He stole a look over at Blossomforth, daring her to beat his record. She glared, angry at a completely different reason, and that reason happened to be brushing his mane.
“Not bad, not bad.” Rainbow declared before setting hoof on the starting line herself. She stretched, cracking various joints before crouching. With incredible force, she took off with legendary speed, exploding past the fan as if Nightmare Moon was on her tail. In her wake was a massive blast of air that knocked several ponies onto their backs. Twilight perked up, her mane disheveled, “16.5 wing power!”
Thunderline regained his senses. Guess she really does have bragging rights, he mused.
Rainbow flew up over the crowd. “Now listen up, if each of you can get your numbers up to at least 10.0 wing power by the end of the week, we'll no doubt set a new tornado speed record. We'll be number 1!”
The rest of the pegasai took their shot at the fan for the next few hours, each gauging near an average of 9.0 wing power. Blossomforth was soon up to the plate. She felt rather lucky to have been caught in her little tangle of stretching earlier, because now she was more than nice and limber. Her muscles were incredibly relaxed and felt rather light. Blossomforth burst forward, praying that if she would lose her wings, at least let it be after this. As she raced past the fan the fan as if her life depended on it, she had managed to pump out 9.7 wing power, which she was more than happy to brag about.
“So how do you feel about that Thunderlane?” She teased, flicking her tail under his chin. “I believe you owe me 40 bits now, since I was 0.4 higher than you.”
Thunderlane coughed. “Okay, new bet. Let's see who can improve the most, then we'll see who pays who.”
Despite how hard they had been working, or maybe the reason, Thunderlane kept waking up every morning feeling worse and worse. Quite literally falling out of bed, Thunderlane trudged on to the kitchen, feeling as if his brain was trying to escape through his nostrils. Of course, Rumble had already been up and fixed himself breakfast, the independent little colt. The younger pony looked up at his elder in concern.
“Mmph myph okamph?” He asked, a mouth full of cereal. Thunderlane attempted a grin, but his muscles ached everywhere. Perhaps due to the insane amount of exercise he's received for the past five days. He remembered Blossomforth looking somewhat ill as well, and he wondered if she felt the same way.
“Listen kiddo, you go ahead to the track and have fun with the other foals. I'm gonna head over to the hospital real quick.” He explained.
“Are you and Blossomforth gonna be alright?” Rumble asked, worry evident on his voice. Thunderlane nodded solemnly as the young colt put his bowl away.
“We'll be fine.” He reassured. He was rather surprised Rumble was worried about Blossomforth too, glad the two must have gotten along. “I'll see ya in a bit okay?”
“Okay.” Rumble replied as Thunderlane made his exit into the excessively bright sun.
His head felt as if it had been filled with murky water. Anytime he would tilt his head, a headache would arise on the other side, making his eyes watering slightly. He was sure the constant exercise and exhaustion wasn't doing well for his illness either, and he was positive he was gonna have to miss out today.
With a determined shake of his head, which he quickly regretted, he set hoof inside the hospital. Nurse Redheart saw him immediately, but hesitated upon seeing his condition.
“My goodness, are you feeling alright today Thunderlane?” She inquired, rushing to his side.
“I feel about as good as I look.” He joked, managing a slight smile. He knew from experience this was not the place to lie. The nurse quickly led him to a room, ensuring his safety and promising good care.
He soon found himself in a bed, equipped with a hospital gown. He was shocked how comfortable these beds actually were. In all his times of visiting, it had never been for a physical ailment, meaning he never got to rest on one of their beds. Not even for the nights I spent over here, he realized rather bitterly. He sighed in content and comfort, despite his condition and what it implied for the remainder of his day, or next few.
“Thunderlane?” He heard someone ask. Turing over to his left he found the mare in question.
“You're sick too?” He asked, rather unnecessarily. Blossomforth pouted, earning a light chuckle from the stallion.
“Yeah, thanks to you. Now we'll never know who wins the bet.” She complained.
“We're resting in hospital beds, sicker than a leftover storm cloud, and you're complaining about not being able to finish a bet?” She was still full of surprises.
Blossomforth rolled over, facing away from him as Dr. Stables entered the room.
“Well,” he commented, “I can certainly say I didn't expect to see you like this today, Thunderlane. As I understand it you two got yourselves a nasty case of the feather flu!” Using his magic, he levitated both their charts to confirm his statement.
“What is that?” Thunderlane asked.
“Just a simple little cold, nothing to fret about.”
“Then why are we in the hospital?” Blossomforth questioned.
Stable sighed. “It's nothing that's fatal nor causes permanent damage. It's just rather hard to get rid of and rather irritating to deal with. It's more of making sure no pony else gets sick. I'm surprised you two have never caught it before. Nevertheless, we'll have you out of here in a few days.”
“What about Tornado Day?”
“Oh yes, that. Well, you all will have to sit this one out.”
Blossomforth shot a glare at Thunderlane with minimal effort. Thunderlane ignored it and focused on Stable. “What do you mean 'you all'?”
“You're not the only ones with the feather flu. Speaking of which I should go check on them. You two get some rest, if there's anything you need just let one of the nurses know. I'll come check on you later in the day.” Stable nodded, content he could properly make his exit.
Blossomforth groaned, punching the side of her bed. “Way to go Thunderlane, now we're both gonna miss the big day!”
“Hey, at least neither of us lose any bits this way.” He tried to joke, only to get her glare once more.
“But we're missing the most important day for Ponyville pegasai! We're supposed to set a new record! All because you had to go and get sick!” She almost yelled. She didn't care much about the record, nor much about their stupid bet. There was something far more important she had planned on for the big event. Now, the very one she planned for ruined them.
Thunderlane rolled over in his bed away from her, rather disarmed by her outburst. He was, instead, trying desperately to remember the dream from the other night, or those before it. A far cry from what he usually does. Unfortunately Blossomforth interrupted his search.
“So...how come...you visit here every week?” She asked, all too cautiously. Thunderlane was taken off guard; she was usually rather blunt. More to the point, how would he answer her? First though, how did she know?
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“Well, I asked Cloudchaser and Flitter why you might be headed to the hospital after I bumped into you a few days ago.” Her voice had a slight edge at their names, Thunderlane could tell. “They told me you go here once a week. How come?”
Thunderlane threw a dismissive hoof. “No I don't, I was just getting some sleeping pills that one time.”
“Then what did the doctor mean by 'I didn't expect to see like this today, Thunderlane'?” She asked in terribly inaccurate mock voice of Stable.
Thunderlane cringed. “Well, 'cause...I'm so damn fit he didn't expect to see me the hospital.”
“Oh yes, you certainly proved that at the track.” Blossomforth rolled her eyes. “So come one, what's the real reason?”
Thunderlane looked around the room, desperately trying to stray the topic away, hoping the mare wouldn't just shoot his lie down again. He figured he could at least tell some of the truth.
“Okay. I have problems sleeping. Whether it's from the nightmares or the insomnia caused by the nightmares I don't really get to rest. Well, not until this flu came along, thank Celestia.”
“What are the nightmares about?”
“Usually snow and ice and --” Thunderlane suddenly stopped himself, afraid to say his name.
“And what?” She asked. Thunderlane sighed. If she was going to learn, he would prefer it be from him rather than an orderly.
“Blossomforth, you remember how when we were foals we'd always keep secrets for each others? Like how you really hurt your wing that one time?” He reminisced. She gave him a nod, slightly embarrassed he brought up that incident. “Can you keep another one?”
“Of course.”
Thunderlane took a deep breath. Here we go. “When Rumble was born I was amazed at the little colt. I honestly wouldn't leave his side for a second, and would get pissed whenever my parents separated us for bed. Something in my head told me that I needed to look after him no matter what. That's exactly what I did. My parents thought it was cute, but I took it very seriously. Anyway, around his first birthday, my parents talked to me. They said they were glad I was so protective of him, and they might know why.
“When I was born, I apparently confused the doctors for some reason. They ran some tests or something, and through some medical mumbo jumbo and magic they found out...they found out I wasn't supposed to be born alone. I was supposed to be born with a twin brother, but he had died as a fertilized egg or something. They said it was a wonder only one of us died and not both. My mom didn't take this news very well, but my dad was simply thankful I was here with them.
“My parents told me this and I didn't take it very well. I would still cling to Rumble, but my parents could hear me cry every now and then. That's when I started having nightmares. Nightmares where my twin brother was pissed that I lived and he didn't. And, well, those nightmares never really stopped. He would always appear with snow and ice or something like that. That's why I started calling him Frostbite. Come to think of it, he's been getting a lot closer to me each time. But, yeah, that's pretty much it. I basically going crazy because the thought of having a unborn twin brother is eating away at me.” He explained, completely neglecting to tell her what her role was in his dreams.
Where he expected to see a shocked expression on her face, he found only a determined grin.

“What's that look for?” Thunderlane asked her, confused by her excited grin.
“And you've been having these problems for how long?” Blossomforth asked, rather confident.
“Almost all my life.” He said. His answer only seemed to solidify her plan. “You have an idea, don't you?”
“Oh yes.”
“...So what's your plan then?”
“Once we get out of here, let's look for some...alternative therapy. Don't worry Thunderlane, I think I know how to stop these nightmares from haunting you.”
Thunderlane woke to someone shaking him violently. His senses blurred as the culprit came into focus. Blossomforth's pristine coat contrasted with the darkness of the room. She was shouting, but no noise had reached his ears. He shook his head, hoping to alleviate the problem, to no avail. Before he could try again, Blossomforth pulled him out of the bed and quickly took flight, prompting Thunderlane to follow her.
The hallway was long and empty, devoid of artificial light. The only guide Thunderlane had was the feeling of Blossomforth's tears she left behind. A light pierced the veil of his blindness, as he caught glimpse of the outside. The hospital behind them had been sieged, devastated by some extreme force. What caught his eyes however, was the sunlit sky.
Celestia's sun was engulfed in a sky of sickly red and pulsing purple, with strange vein-like auroras gliding through the sky with speeds unmatched. Rigid black clouds morphed and transfused into their brethren, causing the downfall of some strange coal-like snow. The sun itself was struggling to breathe, fading in and out as its life hung by the hair of a spider.
Blossomforth mentioned something to him from beneath her tears, but they would not be heard. Increasing their speed, Thunderlane soon found himself in Ponyville proper.
The scene that manifested in front of him filled him with an insatiable rage. Disgusting, large insect-like creatures had invaded his humble town. These ghastly lotus spawn have destroyed the town and were ruining the ponies who lived in it. Fathers' throats were slit before their sons were consumed. Pegasai and unicorns alike had their unique appendages removed, along with anything attached to it. Mothers had to watch as fillies' organs were being extracted. The horrific acts unfolded as the countless cries of agony and helplessness filled the air. Thunderlane's anger only built with the inability to hear any of it.
Were he a dragon, his fire would have melted steel. He charged into the fray without a second thought. His first victim was busy tidying his mouth after a snack of a small orange and purple pegasus filly. He tackled the monster before eviscerating it in attempt to save what was left of the little pegasus. He quickly drew the attention of the others, and they began to advance.
A quick swipe overhead rid Thunderlane the burden of being classified as a pegasus. Biting off one of his victim's natural blades, he quickly parried another and rid his attacker the burden of having a head.
Thunderlane continued to dismantled the insect, utilizing any of the body's arsenal by forcing his hoofs into the arms fleshy interior. Even taking the creature's fleshy wings and planting them into the stubs of his former ones.
Blossomforth had taken off towards Canterlot, he noted, and he soon followed.
The Capital of Equestria was no better off. Blossomforth quickly landed in the streets, galloping off in an unknown direction. Thunderlane followed her, only to see that she had been chasing something. Chaos and war broke out above and around them while they raced through the streets, cornering their catch. Thunderlane stepped to the side of her in order to gaze upon the icy blue stallion in front of him. The pony was scared out of his mind, not just from the death around him but from his chasers as well. Blossomforth seemed to soon regret chasing the poor pony across the city while all of Tartarus broke loose. Thunderlane, however, was not.
Seeing this stallion brought forth an unmatched sense of righteous fury. Thunderlane mercilessly charged forth, piercing the pony with every ounce of strength he could muster. Feeling the blade make contact brought him a sickening satisfaction as it drove deeper into the pony. He felt the life leave his victim as their pleas fell on deaf ears. Looking up at his prey, he saw only the betrayed look on Blossomforth's face as the life left her eyes. The corpse of his friend grew limp on his blade as he removed it. He turned around to see the icy blue stallion where Blossomforth had been. The countenance he wore was not one of sick pleasure or satisfaction, only the stagnant indifference his brother was known for. Thunderlane didn't even notice the white stallion and pink mare that had somehow driven off the invasion, only the unholy apathy of Frostbite.
Tornado Day came and went, and the eight sick pegasai were released soon after. It seemed Thunderlane was the only one not appreciative of the fact. He was still reeling from the nightmare he had a few days ago. At least now I can see what Blossomforth was so excited about , he mused. Thunderlane followed behind her as she practically skipped to their destination. His wings were still a little sore from the flu, and he figured hers might be as well, but he ignored this fact as they made their way into the Ponyville Library.
Thunderlane had entered the library before, but he had never seen it in such a mess. Books on seemingly random subjects were strewn about its wooden floor. Various instruments of science were active about the chamber, some of which Thunderlane was worried were going to break. The librarian herself was reading a scroll upon her desk.
“Hey Twilight!” Blossomforth greeted, startling the lavender unicorn away from a letter.
“Oh hey you two! Feeling any better?” She asked, moving towards them.
“Yeah, wings are a bit sore though...” Blossomforth groaned, testing her appendages.
“So what brings you two here? Are you hear to pick up your copy?” Twilight asked Blossomforth. The white mare's face soon turned pink. She was embarrassed Twilight would speak of it so casually, especially in front of Thunderlane.
“Wha-no! Uhh, not yet.” She stated, not wanting to discuss it further.
“A copy of what?” Thunderlane asked, raising a curious eyebrow.
“It's nothing...Anyway we needed your help.” She derailing the subject.
“With what?”
“Do you have any books about ghosts or spirits?” Blossomforth asked. Twilight looked a little confused, while Thunderlane looked at her in disbelief. She's not suggesting...I don't think I want it to be that way , he pondered.
Twilight simply hummed with a hoof to her chin. “Spike...!” She sang, to which the little dragon appeared from upstairs, scratching at his eye. “Can you grab us some books from the paranormal section downstairs?”
“Yeah, sure.” He replied, his itch persisting.
Soon the trio had a rather modest section of tomes to browse. Thunderlane was growing incredibly agitated at all of this nonsense, and hated the idea of his troubles being chalked up under “paranormal.” The book Blossomforth chose was a glossary of sorts, depicting and describing various forms of spirits and phenomena.
“Aha! Here it is!” She exclaimed.
Twilight looked over her shoulder. “Specter? A ghost that haunts a pony's mind? What's this all about anyway?” She inquired.
Blossomforth looked at Thunderlane, asking if she could tell his story. With a very reluctant sigh, he nodded. Blossomforth recounted his tale. His birth, his nightmares, all laid out onto the table for Twilight to analyze.
“Okay,” Thunderlane interrupted, “before we get to far into this, am I the only crazy one here? A Spectawhatever, haunting me?”
“It makes sense though, right? I mean, after years of therapy and no results? Maybe your brother's haunting you!” Blossomforth suggested.
“That's stupid, and you know it's stupid! Ghosts aren't real. Frostbite...”
The lights dimmed.
“...is just a figment of my imagination that I can't let go of, that's it!" Thunderlane shouted.
"Maybe you can't let go of him because he doesn't want to leave!" She continued.
"There's no such thing as ghosts!"
"You're not crazy Thunderlane!" He looked at her in confusion. It was rather nice of her to say, but her ideas were impossible.
Thunderlane simply shook his head. "I'm going home, this is just ridiculous...”
“What about your scarf? It's really cold out there.”
“I don't care...” He stated before stepping out into the winter night.
Thunderlane crashed into his bed with the afternoon sun beating down on him. His room still incredibly dark despite the star's efforts. “Ghosts? Really? I thought she was more sensible than that.” He groaned as he turned over and almost fell out of bed.
“Hey Thunder!” Rumble called as he came into his room, “you didn't even say hi to me...”
“I'm sorry bud, I've had a bad day.” He said, unhappy to see his brother frown.
“So are you feeling any better? Did you kick the feather flu's butt?” He asked, punching the air.
Thunderlane couldn't help but grin. “Sure did. Whooped it good. My wings are a bit sore though.”
“What about your work then?” Rumble asked.
“Ahh, I wouldn't worry about it.” He dismissed, “I work only when they need me. I tend to just stay in the house.”
“Is that why they call you lazy Thunderlane?”
“Uh yeah...” He started, looking around his personal prison, “...lazy.”
Blossomforth hoped the argument wouldn't have happened, but she figured it was unavoidable with what she was suggesting. Despite Thunderlane's doubts, she still hung by her hypothesis. However her mind wasn't on her work, but rather how to proper apologize to him.
The two mares spent hours searching the library for anything more on specters specifically, with few results. Their hunt went late into the night.
“So what makes you think it's the specter of his twin that's doing this?” the unicorn asked, bringing her from her thoughts.
“I don't know, it just makes sense to me in a way. Thunderlane's problems were not a decline like they should be. I remember he just suddenly stopped coming to play with me. I don't think it's supposed to work like that.” The pegasus explained.
“I can see that, but you also have to understand his situation. Thunderlane had suddenly learned he had a twin and that he'll never get to see him. That must have been really hard on him, especially if it's effecting him today.” Twilight mentioned as she put yet another book away to be organized later.
“I guess, but...Argh! These books have nothing! This isn't helping at all!” Blossomforth exclaimed, bashing her hooves onto the pages.
Twilight quickly levitated the book over and inspected the damages, petting it like a frightened foal. “Well, listen Blossomforth. It's getting kind of late, but I'll see if I can't get some books from Canterlot's library sometime. I know you only mean well Blossomforth, but this isn't your chance to become the next Lighthouse adventure, this is real."
"I know..." Blossomforth said, feeling guilty about how she acted.
"Do you still want the new one by the way?" Twilight asked.
“No, I think I'm done reading paranormal stuff for the night. Thanks though, Twilight.” Blossomforth said, waving goodbye. Twilight did the same and looked back to the pile of books stacked up. Maybe Zecora knows more about this subject , Twilight mused, still rather intrigued by the whole ordeal. She simply shrugged and decided to turn in for an early night for once, biding Spike “sweet dreams” in the process.
Thunderlane's eye were growing heavy, and he knew he was about to enter his own form of Tartarus again soon. The moon had risen long ago, and ominous shadows danced along the lengths of the walls. He sat at his desk, pen in mouth and an empty notebook in front of him. It was an old technique he tried, Journal Therapy, that he decided to revisit. It had failed him before due to his lack of commitment, but it did help marginally to know his experiences were going into his own personal record. There were simply things even Dr. Stable didn't, or rather couldn't, know. Sighing to himself he began to write.
Well, here I am again. Writing this stupid journal to hopefully get something out of it. Blossomforth now knows of my craziness, and she thinks it's because I'm being haunted. Now my mind's got that idea stuck, who knows what kind of nightmares I'm going to have now. I knew it would be bad to get her involved. I just hope the same thing doesn't happen to her like it did in my...
