So ended another boring day. Another day of work, another day of coming home alone, another day of playing video games, reading, or generally wasting time, until I went to sleep. Most days, the reward for a long day of work, was another long day of work the next day.

At that time I was about 5’10” and 185lb. It worked out to someone who got called skinny by fat people and not really commented on by everyone else. My hair was either very light brown, or very dark blonde depending on light and such. I wasn't ugly but as to where I fall on the spectrum beyond that was a mystery to me.

I went to my computer, as my current interest was a new game that had just come out for the pc. I concentrated on ignoring the real world for a bit while trying to save this fake one. The strangest thing kept happening though. First I thought I heard some thunder, but when I looked out the window the stars shined back at me, so no storm. Then I thought I heard my front door open, but my brother and I were the only ones with the keys, he didn't exactly live close, and he never came over without calling…

Must just be the house settling as it cooled off outside. When I first moved in I got up every ten minutes to check out every little sound. Then I heard a different strange sound, like the footfall of someone in high heels on a wooden floor. Must just be the ice maker in the freezer. That thing scares me all the time.

I started a new mission but something caught my eye. The streetlight shone through the window in the room next to mine. It pitched a strange shaped shadow on the hallway wall. It didn't look like a murderer or thief ready to do me in, so I went to check out what caused it.

Probably the blind got caught in a strange position, I reasoned, it kind of looks like the outline of a horse’s head…

As I got up from my computer and turned toward the hallway, I heard a gasp and the sound of someone, clumsily by the sound of it, running away in high heels. I gave pursuit.

I turned the corner into the hall I got a split-second view of something about knee height as it shot around the corner into my living room. I pushed off of the far wall to maintain my momentum around the corner. I chased it through my living room, leapt my coffee table and was out into the street as it rounded the edge of my house. I turned the corner and caught a glimpse as it disappeared into what was obviously some kind of portal, temporal rift, gateway to another realm, thingy…

Unfortunately, it was positioned right AT the corner and I had no time to slow down or stop before I plunged through it. On the other side I made it about two steps before my head slammed into something quite solid and I flew head over heels. I landed a good 10 feet down off of some sort of indoor balcony.

There are very few circumstances in which being close lined is pleasant…this wasn't one of those times.

******

My eyes opened slowly. First I noticed I was laying on my side, second I noticed my head HURT, third I noticed I couldn't move.

Here I was, I chased an intruder through a magical portal and immediately broke my neck. I guess it breaks that “go to work the next day” monotony I had. But couldn’t I have broken my neck and probably get eating alive at the END of my long weekend?

I heard voices from outside and two silhouettes passed the window. One looked like the horse from earlier, and…I didn’t know about the other one, but it was flying…

My mind raced What is THAT size and can fly that slowly? ...well maybe a…. it could be… nope got nothing.

The door slowly inched open. My mind was in hyper speed as it tried to figure out what could be about to come through the door. About knee height, a purple horses head slowly edged its way around the door.

No, not a horse, I corrected myself. This horse had a horn, so that would make it a unicorn…though unicorns are horses with horns…this creature was much too small. What do they call a pony unicorn, a ponicorn? That’s good news, I thought, from what I remembered of unicorn lore they didn’t tend to eat people, they actually had a reputation of benevolence! Above the purple head sprouted a blue head, no horn, but a stunning hair do. My sight finally focused and my mind cleared. I noticed the unicorn’s horn glowed a purple color to match the opening door.

“Hello” said the purple one “I’m Twilight Sparkle, what are you doing in my house?” She asked seeming innocently curious. At that the blue one gave an anxious look behind the purple ones back. Then in a blink, she caught herself and appeared RIGHT in front me.

“Yah, why would you go into someone’s home uninvited? Are you a SPY?”

My response got more agitated and louder as I went “Talking ponies? Why? Where am I? What was that portal thing? Why can't I move?”

“Rainbow! Why don't you back off for a second?” Twilight said to the blue one, then turned to address me. “I'm sorry, this is Rainbow Dash.” She leaned in; with a comforting smile “sometimes she can get a bit crazy” and her eyes spun in opposite directions.

Well that sure is something you don’t see every day.

She continued “Let’s start with question #1. Yes we are talking ponies. We talk because it’s the polite thing to do. You are currently in my house, The Library, in Ponyville, in Equestria. Um, that portal was supposed to be just for looking through” and with that she turned and gave Rainbow a suspicious look, which caused Rainbow to blush. “My best guess about the moving thing is that your neck is broken”. She saw my eyes widen and headed off my panic “BUT I have good news. I've been working on this spell and it should fix you right up with only a bit of modification!” Her eyes shut and her horn glowed again.

“WAIT” I shouted “This is all moving a bit fast for me, can we…I don’t know…talk for a minute so I can try to wrap my head around what’s going on here? My name is Derek; I followed someone who was in my house, through this portal. I don't know who or why just…That’s what happened. So this is your house in a place called Ponyville. This is a land ruled by talking ponies, or ponicorns, or whatever that blue one…Rainbow Dash?...is. You can do magic. And I’m laying here with a broken neck. Does that about sum up what’s going on?”

Twilight looks down at me and nods; meanwhile the blue one is still giving me the evil eye.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do I guess.

“Okay fix me up Doctor Sparkle.”

Her horn glowed and the last thing I heard before I blacked out wasn't particularly comforting.

“Oh” she giggled “I’m not a doctor.”
