Chapter 1: Arguing With Love
I never really thought much about love. It just, didn’t seem like something that I would have, or even need to get involved in. Being the lead cello player in the Canterlot Orchestra seem to take most of my time, living in Ponyville I had to take regular train rides to get the recitals and practises. The only time I had I would practise at home and spend time with my friends. There was of course Vinyl Scratch, my current best friend and roommate of the past 4 years. Not to mention Lyra, Bon-Bon, Berry Punch, Derpy Hooves..... Derpy....
For the past 5 or so years I have been good friends with one Derpy Hooves, a pony known through Ponyville for her clumsy, ditzy behaviour. A pony with a cloudy grey coat and a golden mane and yellow crossed eyes. But those that knew her like me, would see that behind that wall eyed look was a kind, sweet, gentle, beautiful... oh! I mean an all around great mare...
I met her when I first moved to Ponyville, she delivered Twilight Sparkle’s mail to my door, which made no sense, her house was right in the middle of Ponyville, and I live on the edge. Anyway I wasn’t happy with her but I let it slide. Over the next few weeks I started to see her a lot around Ponyville and found myself and her to talk often and eventually she became one of my closest friends. She even introduced me to my dearest friend Vinyl at her birthday party, in a competition bid to see whose music was better, I still think I won, don’t trust whatever Vinyl tells you.
Ok for a while now, well more like the past few months Derpy and I have bonded closer, our friendship grew by the day you could say, well in my eyes at least, but... I felt myself feeling different about Derpy than how I did to all my other friends. At first I just brushed it off as a sign of our close bond but, these feelings keep pestering me from Celestia’s Rise to Luna’s Set.
I started to feel this way on the night I had a concert in Manehattan, a concert that could make me and my music famous through all Equestria, but I had broken my cello. A stallion guard, a tall Earth Pony with a coat of white and a mane of sea blue, was helping me carry it up the stairs, when he proceeded to drop it, my dear and beautiful Cello was smashed to pieces. It was like my heart was what had smashed, I had loved that cello, it was a part of me, and it was the one I used for my very first concert that made me what I am today. Derpy was there when this all happened but flew quickly away, I did'nt know at the time what she was about to do but I remember being angry at her just flying off rather than comforting me. just before I was due on stage she came bursting in, a brand new cello in her hooves it looked expensive. she gave it to me, an early birthday present she said. I kissed her cheeks in happiness, unaware how much I was blushing at that point, her warm check pressed against my lips and went out to play what, in my opinion, was the best performance of my life with dear sweet Derpy Hooves watching and smiling the whole time.
After that day looking back; how I blushed, kissed her cheeks, held her hoof... I couldn't get these images out of my head. I would lay awake thinking these thoughts while my cheeks burned into my blue floral pillow. I had to admit Derpy was a very beautiful mare, if not THE most beautiful mare I had ever met in my life. She was not only this but honest, caring and so many other things I would be here forever listing them. I don’t understand, I lay picturing her face, her smooth curved feathers, how her golden eyes shimmed in Celestia's Sunlight, feeling like I never had about anypony before in my life.
But I wasn’t a fillyfooler, was I? I never thought I would or could be. I mean Vinyl is bi-sexual herself and many ponies see us two as being a couple but we aren’t, though I’m used to it. But I never thought about actually swinging that way myself. It’s not a bad thing is it? To have feelings, should I put it? I feel bad and wrong thinking how I do these past couple of months, with nopony knowing about these feelings. Feelings... feelings for Derpy Hooves... it’s just not something I ever thought I would say, especially about a mare. But thinking of her, her laugh, her cute smile and how her white teeth sparkled like diamonds, I can’t help but feel that I’m falling hopelessly in love with my friend. I have to tell somepony, well that’s the first step I guess, I’m no master at relationships but I guess somepony will have to know sooner or later.

Chapter 2: Vinyl’s Plan
The next day...
I waited at home, twiddling my hooves. Where was she? Vinyl was meant to be home an hour ago. That blasted mare has probably gone out partying without so much as stopping home first. Though that was typical behaviour for her. As my patience started to wear thin I heard the door slam loudly and a voice sings. “Tavi I’m home!” Now was my chance.
“Oh Vinyl dear, how pleased I am to finally get to see you tonight” I said sarcastically,
“Sorry Tavi, had to work late, the new mix is really going great I tell ya!” She sat down on the cream sofa opposite me and a look of concern washed onto her face. “Tavi, you ok?” She said worriedly.
I took in a deep breath, “No Vinyl I’m not”. The white Unicorn got up and sat down beside me,
“Tell me what’s wrong, I hate seeing you glum” she looked at me, removing her glasses revealing her bring red eyes and made serious eye contact with me.
“I.... I *cough* I...” I was stuttering, terrified to tell her. Vinyl frowned
“Tavi just tell me!” No turning back now.
“IhavefeelingsforDerpy” I said in a rush. Vinyl looked confused
“wait... what...Oh!” a massive grin appeared on her face. “I knew it! I knew it!” She shouted dancing around the room, her blue spiky mane bouncing in the air.
I was shocked. She knew? How? “Hahaha the look on your face Tavi, you thought I couldn’t tell?” Vinyl said smiling from ear to ear.
“But...but...how?” “Tavi, no offence, but you’re not exactly hiding it well” I was shocked. Did that mean Derpy knew? Why hadn’t she said anything? Vinyl reassured me, “Don’t worry, Derpy doesn’t know, she’d of said something by now” I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling calmer and happy for telling Vinyl, even if she had already guessed. Vinyl grabbed my hoof “Now you have to tell ‘er, don’t worry about it. Leave it all to be”.... Ok now I was worried.
The next night...
I was standing in my living room, waiting for Vinyl who was rummaging in her room for something ‘important’. Earlier that day Vinyl had rushed out early to tell Derpy I was treated her to a nice dinner at the ‘The Griffin’, a new restaurant in town square. I was wearing a lilac dress, frilled at the edges, I had my normally strait hair up and curled into a bun, I thought I looked pretty good. I thought of how Derpy will look, blushing I focused my attention to Vinyl who had just come into the room. She was carrying a crystal purple necklace, matching the colour of my cutiemark.
Here we go Octavia... play it cool.

Chapter 3: OctaDerp
I sat in the restaurant, nervous. Would she even arrive? What if she didn’t? I found myself getting worked up, probably over nothing but I couldn’t help it. I looked around couples were everywhere, laughing, talking, holding hooves. I pictured me and Derpy doing the same and again I found myself bright red. I really need to stop doing that. I heard the front door loudly open and slam shut several ponies where just as startled as I was. I looked up, and there was Derpy. She looked... breathtaking. Her mane had been curled with a bubbles hairclip inside. A soft yellow silk dress hugged her body with a lacy bow on her back. I had never thought she could ever look any more beautiful than I already thought she was. She came and sat on the seat opposite me. “Hey! It’s great to see you!” Derpy said as bubbly as ever. I had a feeling that tonight might just go well.
A long while later...
The meal went wonderfully, Derpy told me all about how Dinky, her daughter was doing at school. That’s another reason I’m worried to tell her, she has a nine year old daughter; that just makes it even less likely that she’ll ever see me the way I see her. But despite that we had a good time, shared a few laughs and had a truly delicious meal of ranch salad and ice cream for dessert.
We arrived at Derpy’s but I made us stop and take a seat on the bench beside her front door. I looked to the sky; the stars gleamed in the dark, just like Derpy’s eyes. I looked at her to see her staring at me, her eyes even though couldn’t look the same way were clearly trying to focus on me. Even though she might not have been looking at me the way I hoped she was I still found my cheeks flaming. Clearing my throat, I guess it’s now or never.” “Derpy?” I said shakily.
“Yeah Octy?” She smiled at me her perfectly white teeth shining in the night.
“I need to tell you something.....
It was then when I told her everything. Just like with Vinyl I said it all in a rush saying everything I needed to. I told her how much our friendship meant to me. How after the incident with my cello all those months ago made me question my feelings, how Vinyl insisted she came to dinner with me so I could tell her.
“Derpy, I think I’m in love with you”...
She stared at me, the same as she was though my whole speech, she opened her mouth as to say something, but quickly shut it. I was really upset, not even an ‘I’m sorry I don’t feel that way’ or ANY reaction at all. “I’m...sorry Derpy... ill just leave now” Getting up and starting to walk away, I was too scared to hang around, I’m such a fool for thinking she could ever like a mare like me.
“WAIT!”
I turned quickly upon hearing Derpy’s sudden outburst; she had a tear running down her face. Oh Buck, had I upset her that much? I’m such an idiot! “Octy” She whimpered. Oh gosh I’m so sorry Derpy.
Suddenly Derpy had flown over and grabbed me in her hooves, holding me close and tight. I didn’t know what to think. Then Derpy kissed me... it was exactly how I wanted to be, if not better. Her lips were soft and tasted like muffins, well no surprise there. She slowly pulled away as I stared at her slightly breathless. Then Derpy turned and began to talk to her house.
“Derpy” I whispered after her. What was that mare up to? As Derpy opened the door to step inside she turned to look at me, softness in her eyes I’d never seen before.
“You’d have to take me out on another date sometime, Octavia” She winked and slowly shut the door, leaving me standing on her porch.
“And another date you shall have, my dear sweet Derpy” I said to the door before turning away to walk home, knowing that right now, my life was officially perfect.
