The Tragedy of Nyx
Chapter One: Preps
Load Full StoryNext ChapterYou know sometimes I wonder who really I am.
I wonder, if I'm meant for anything great at all?
If I'm really worth a soul and body on this earth.
I try telling myself I'll do great and amazing things, that nobody else has even dreamed of.
But no matter how many times I try to escape my hellish reality, I always wake up. In an endless loop of the very gift God, Allah, the Sun God or whatever deity, blessed me with endless imagination. What once was the child's vast world of nonstop creativity now is the adults imprisonment, for no matter what great things I can think, non are powerful enough to release me from my bonds.
Soothing sorrowful woe... These are the life and times of Nyx of the moon's light. May my memories live long in the hearts of those who hold them.
A ring of light appeared suddenly from the overcast, scattering the birds nestling in the grass. An explosion of fire lit up the darkness. And all went quiet and dark as it once was. But all was not as it seemed...
A silhouette, tall and menacing as dark of the moon, rose without a whisper in the air. Blue eyes of shadow pierced the gloomy murk of night. They glanced around furtively, then looked down upon the claw-like hands. Four claws, not five as told. No matter, a spell written five thousand years ago and in a different universe, it was better than nothing. Surely better than that horrible troll-like creature which sprouted seven fingers each but only three toes total.
The eyes shifted until they located the creatures back. Though it was dark, it mattered not. The shadow could see clearly as day. Clearer in fact.
Two wings, quiet small and hard to notice, but folded in. When the monster opened them however, they held a solid twelve feet diameter. And amongst the thin grey membranes: lines of crystal heart hues of neon blues and purples. Beautiful. The enemies might catch a glimpse of the blue angel before death was brought upon them.
The eyes looked down again, past the hands, and instead at the limbs, torso, and legs. There was no long neck as promised, but one that supported similarity the creatures once humanoid form. The arms and legs were slightly shorter in proportion, possibly to impose walking on all four limbs. Nonetheless the were thick to the bone in muscles, a stomach flatter than paper (or so the monster thought smugly), and three toes as well, with retractable claws as well.
"Such a truly nightmarish creature of darkness should not be permitted in a universe like this. But I've waited long enough for this moment. It's time for my colors to shine, and my scream to be heard. FOR I AM NYX! THE GREAT AND DEADLY! HEAR MY NAME AND WAIL, for I am death to all, and to all a good night...
"Spike! Wake up!"
"Ugh...."
Spikes eyes opens the tiniest fraction of an inch.
"Five more minutes please...?"
"No! You already had 'five more minutes' ten minutes ago! We need to get going or we're going to miss Princess Luna's royal visit!"
Spike looked at the clock.
"5:30? Really Twilight, I know your the top student and all, not to mention a princess yourself, but why do we need to get up this early? What's there to do?"
The question was a mistake.
"WHAT'S THERE TO DO?-" began Twilight.
After thirty minutes of lecturing, and a coffee with donuts (extra sprinkles) Spike felt a little bit more awake. It was still dark out.
"Well, it's about time you dragged your dragon tail out of bed. Common, let's go through the checklist. And I promise, if everything goes well today, you'll get an hour to sleep in tomorrow."
Spike didn't bother mentioning the LAST time that that promise had been made and the next morning a surprise letter from Princess Celestial had completely ruined the morning (ever try to sleep in while burping up letters? You try it.). Spike would just have to hope it would work out in the end.
*skimming over tall grasses... eyes pierced out in the distance... stars above...death before him...*
A few hours later after the dawning of the sun, Rainbow Dash awoke. She went though her routines: stretching, eating Oats and Honeygrass, and 'dashing' all the clouds that might impede on tonight's celebration for Princess Luna--- all in ten minutes flat. Now that her job was taken care of, she had the rest of the day to practice her tricks and skills. Afterwards, she decided that she would help out with getting Ponyville ready for the celebration.
Meanwhile Applejack was hard at work. No day was ever an exception to miss working on the farm, celebration or no celebration. Even though Applejack, her brother, and sister had been up since the crack of dawn, chores were still to be done, and would take its sweet time finishing up well up until the afternoon.
Pinkie Pie was jumping somewhere...
Rarity was finishing up on her next line of dresses meant for the fashion show that would take place later tonight, all in honor of Princess Luna. There were dresses of a moon, stars, purples and blacks with blues, some more stars and Rarity's favorite, a dress that mimicked Rainbow Dash's mane, except instead of the colors of the rainbow, they were the lushed colors of the night. Rarity see, HOPED that her memory of Luna's mane matched the dress, but she was so worked up about it she nearly discarded the idea. Only a picture from Twilight saved the dress.
Little Fluttershy was humming and 'lalalaing' as she fed her birds and animal friends. It was a very peaceful morning with just a little breeze from the north winds and enough heat to make the sun warm the skin, but not overcook anybody to the point of needing refreshment.
*dodging mountains, following a river, and soaring along a beaten road...*
The night was nearing, and the small village looked gorgeous. Banners hung in the streets celebrating the return of Princess Luna to her former royal self, food had been prepared for more than enough of the populous of the village, there was not a cloud in the sky, and Twilight was more than ready for her speech.
But feeling "more than ready" was not officially "totally ready," at least not in Twilight's book.
"Okay Spike, keep quizzing me on what to say."
Though it had been a long tiring day Spike still remained as positive as a baby dragon could.
"'What do you have to say about Princess Luna, is she truly changed, or is this just an act?'"
The questions wouldn't be asked during the ceremony, but Twilight's speech was supposed to answer them anyways, in the most subtle, yet influencing way. The audience wouldn't know that their questions (if they had any that is) were being answered, but after hearing the speech, they would return to their homes feeling as though Princess Luna really was a great, kind, and gentle alicorn that she always had meant to be.
"Princess Luna wa-" Twilight began.
"YAHOO!!!"
Rainbow Dash came practically out of nowhere smashing gracefully to the ground as a heap of dust and rocks blew into a column of smoke.
"Hey Twilight, what's shaking?"
Twilight just so happened to be, no thanks to Dash's unexpected surprise landing party.
"O-oh n-n-nothing. J-just trying to s-study for my speech is all.. Which you clearly aren't helping with."
"Hahaha! Oh Twilight, everypony knows that you could make up a speech as good as this one on the fly!"
"But this isn't just some simply speech for some simple pony, it's for Princess. Luna herself! And let's not forget, Princess Celestial and Cadence will be here as well! They'll hear the entire speech and will be judging it every word that I say! It's enough to make somepony crazy!"
Rainbow Dash but her lip trying not to laugh and say something. (Crazy like you? it would have begun).
Pinkie Pie came bounding up at that moment.
"Hi Twilight, Rainbow Dash! How are you guys this evening?"
"We're doing great Pinkie, but where have you been? I bought that you promised you would help out on the party planning."
"Oh, I did! And I gave specific instructions to Cheese Sandwhich what he would do for my part of the party. I had an equally more important job though, I had to bake all the cupcakes cakes cookies pies toffees fudges and let's not forget, donuts for the desserts tonight at my secret bakery!"
"Wait, you have another bak-"
"Ohh, sweet then!" Interrupted Rainbow Dash.
Twilight glared at her.
"What?"
"Never mind, Pinkie, have you seen were the others are?"
"Oooh, yes yes yes yes yes! Rarity is still getting her dresses all settled for the fashion show, but Applejack is finishing up her stand so she and Fluttershy should be here any second!"
"Great! I can't wait to see Rarity's fashion show, she promised it'd be completely in honor of Princess Luna!" said Twilight excitedly.
"I cant wait to try Applejack's zap-apple pies!" Rainbow continued. "After she told me about her secret batch of cider, I've been begging her for ages to make something out of it!"
"Somepony saying ma name cause ma ears are burnin?"
Applejack trotted up to the ponies followed quietly by Fluttershy.
"Hey AJ, Fluttershy! Yeah we might just mentioned you and your "apple"-mazing pies! When can we try them?"
"Oh Rainbow, sometimes your so impatient! Soon I tell ya, right as soon as Princess Luna's arrival will I let y'all, and especially you Rainbow, try some pie."
"Everypony, quick to the center! Luna's chariot is on the way! I need to get up to the podium for my speech!" Twilight said as she rushed off into the jostling crowd before remembering her wings.
The rest of the friends flew, walked, or (Fluttershy) was pushed this way and that as they tried to find their seats.
*appearing at the edge of a forest...*
"I'll be noticed to quickly if I try to fly over to them." A deep voice rumbled. "I'd better go through the forest than over."
*disappearing into the darkness, of the Evergreen Forest...*
"Welcome Ponies, to Princess Luna's Moon Rising Celebration! Many moons ago, Princess Luna had fallen into the same problems as many of us ponies face today, but after realizing her faults, she came back, and now walks taller than ever before as she lifts the moon back it's rightful place in the sky, just like old times!" Announced Twilight.
Her speech would be long, include many famous amendments done by the Princess', and then Princess Celestia would take the stage.
"And now my pony subjects, my beautiful sister, LUNA!"
With that, Princess Luna shot forth in glimmers of moonlight and stars, soaring through the sky around the moon.
Princess Luna too, gave a speech of the wonders of night. Every word seemed to have a spell upon it inflicting drowsiness to those hearing it. It wasn't a put me to sleep drowsy, but more of a I'm dreaming of a beautiful night and music dream. One that no pony, animal, or creature the world would ever be able to forget.
The moment the last word was spoken the spell was lifted and a roar of stamping a cheering arose from the crowd.
There were games and music, ranging from Vinyl Scratch's disco bass beat mix-up to Octavia's more formal orchestra.
The apple pies tasted wonders, in fact, so good, that it even influenced Rainbow to attempt a Sonic Rainboom, much to the delight of Ponyville and the Princess'.
Even Discord seemed content, talking with Fluttershy about all the progress he had made in his own quest for the meaning of friendship.
Rarity's fashion show went without a hitch, and all the famous ponies who had decided to show up at dainty Ponyville instantly realized the potential of such a youth with the skill she possessed.
As the night drew on, the Princess' used to their magic to light up the sky with celestial fireworks, majestic moon-lights, and other creativities that could only be brought forth during the night.
Their magic also however, alerted their precise location to uninvited guest...
