The Tragedy of Nyx
Chapter Three: What the Dark Side of Darkness Does
Previous ChapterSunlight flickered through the window. The birds were chirping, and the sounds of a summer morning filled the room.
Nyx opened his eyes.
I am in a dream he thought.
Once upon a time Nyx could dream of a great many things, great wondrous creative dreams in which he could easily walk freely. none could hinder him here, and before the change, this is where he spent quite a bit of free time. But that had been years ago. nowadays, he hardly slept restfully, let alone dream.
Clearly whatever magic Princess Celestia had done to him had put him in VERY deep sleep.
Nyx got out of bed and went to the window. he was in one of the many houses he had lived in as a child.
Nyx walked outside to feel the summer breeze.
from what Nyx perceived, this was a beautiful day. though this was an empty field. there was no place for a shadow like him to crawl into.
without warning clouds started to appear, and rain began to fall immediately after. the sun disappeared and a blood red moon took its place.
Nyx continued walking.
the rain fell heavily and the clouds burst as lightning flashed while thunder answered.
when Nyx could no longer see the small house, he looked up the faithful sky. he sat in the soaked grass and absentee pulled at the grass stocks, wondering when his dream would end.
he didn't like it. it reminded him of his past. and his past was NEVER to be remembered. like shutting book after its been read, placing it on the shelf, and never being opened again, Nyx had absolutely refused to look back.
Nyx looked back to the sky. The moon had suddenly split the chaotic clouds. The moons surface was cratered differently than he had know before- no. He mustn't go there.
The moon glowed brightly against the storm.
Suddenly one of the craters started to grow. Larger and larger until the dot started to form into a lone figure against the reflection of the sun.
Nyx jumped to his feet when he realized who it was.
Dark-blue, or in this case, as Princess Celestia had mentioned, Princess Luna.
Nyx started to walk away, not wishing to take any part of what the dream Princess Luna wanted with him. But he stopped cold when the Princess called out to him.
"Nyx! Stop!"
Nyx turned his head, bot believing what he had heard. Never before had his lucid dreams been so... Well lucid.
The Princess landed a few measurable feet away from Nyx.
"Your not real, only part of my imagination. Your going to disappear right now." Nyx commanded, favoring his old trick to get rid of nightmares.
Luna looked at him.
"I am Princess Luna, not Dark-Blue as you seem to have become in favor of calling me."
Nyx narrowed his eyes in confusion. How did she..?
I can do a great many things while I'm in dreams, whether they're mine, or others, I am the queen of dreams.
Nyx's mouth opened. Reading my thoughts? But- wait, she can hear those, and tho- damn it Dark-Bl-shit I did it aga-Erugh this is annoying!
Indeed it can be quiet upsetting to those not in practice of shielding their minds. Luna's voice echoed in Nyx's head.
Forget this. "Why are you here in my dream?" Nyx questioned out loud. Rather than risking Princess Luna accidentally hearing something important, Nyx would just have to speak outloud instead.
"i am the princess of the night, I have this power amount many others. usually I don't invade the personalities of others but only in extreme cases. i find that this is an extreme case beyond all doubt."
"wonder why." Nyx mused.
Princess Luna spoke gravely in his head. you have disrupted the peace on Equestria. already in the deepest the world's evil lair's unwelcome creatures are stirring. long have I held watch over the prison Tartarus, but I feel the gates may break. Cerberus cannot hold them by himself.
"seemingly you have targeted me as the root cause of this." Nyx responded.
if you had chosen to remain on your world-
I would never have stopped suffering Nyx thought before he could stop himself. For fear of what else he might give Nyx remained stone-quiet.
Luna's voice faltered for a second, then continued- if you had remained on your world no.e of this would have ever happened, you not defeated and broken, and our people and land not injured.
"Um, pardon me Mrs. Luna, but I was NEVER defeated, and especially not broken."
I can not only read your thoughts but see what you see as well.
"you can't see inside my mind!"
no, not in your literal head, but whatever you imagine in there, I see out here.
and just to prove her point the land shifted, blurring from the grassy field to a third person view of Nyx on his back, Celestia pinning him on the ground, lifting a hoof, breaking his arm.
Nyx felt a twinge of pain suddenly in his arm and he looked down on it.
then he stifled his gasp of alarm.
oh shit
he was in his before form!
Nyx tried to imagine his dragon form but to no avail. when someone says "stop thinking about puppies," one's mind simply does not immediately think of something else, but falls for the psychic trick of being forced to think about puppies. another way of looking at this, especially in Nyx's case, try to forget something, such as memory, and you'll never forget it.
Luna, hearing Nyx's thoughts, turned her head. Her eyes went wide.
What...?! Your... Your a-
"I KNOW WHAT I AM!" Nyx interrupted roaring. "But it doesn't matter what I was for I no longer am therefore it is unimportant."
But- Why-? How- It doesn't make any sense! How could you- how did you, come here?
"Hey, did you ever here me?"
Why are you here?! Luna demanded.
"It. Doesn't. Matter."
Luna narrowed her eyes.
Very well. You don't have to tell me now, but I WILL find out. I'll be back. Every single night, I'll be in your dreams, demanding your anwser. And every time you refuse, you will suffer my nightmares.
Lightning flashed and thunder crackled at that very moment. Lightning crashed before Nyx's feet sending him scrambling for safety. Nyx abruptly stopped when he remembered where he was.
"You think that I fear your dreams? Not even yours, they're mine!"
I control the dream world. Let me ask you something- Luna walked into a shadow disappearing. Suddenly she appeared in front of Nyx and before he could react, landed a kick straight in his gut -does this hurt?
Nyx made a wheezing sound and collapsed clutching his stomach.
"What the hell was that for?!"
THAT was for what you did to me!
"Well, on the contrary, I was actually aiming for your sister..."
Luna raised a hoof-
"But it was very noble of you to protect your sister like that and I'm sorry that I hit you instead" Nyx quickly said.
Luna's hoof went back down; shaking her head as she spoke telepathically. Whatever possessed my sister to grant you this second chance is beyond me. But I trust her judgement... I just hope you'll be able to meet whatever demands she gave you.
As do I Nyx thought sullenly.
It's a shame you've spent all your potential on doing evil acts. Otherwise you could prove very helpful in fixing the issue at hand with the demons arising. I suppose though, you'd much rather see the world burn.
Nyx said nothin for fear of what he might come out.
Regardless, we'll have more time chat tomorrow night I'm sure. Until then, sleep comfortably. Or, at least try to. Luna whispered smirking.
She raised a hoof and smashed it against the ground. The world immediately flipped on its axis and Nyx started to fall. Just as Nyx began to pick up speed, the world flipped again, and sent Nyx back to the ground. When he landed on his back with a thud, his eyes shot open, and his body flew up in alarm.
He was in the open field where he had fought Princess Celestia.
Among many other things, Nyx noticed he looked different. Like a pony.
He touched his head and felt a sharp pointy thing.
Correction: he was a unicorn.
Nyx fell back onto the soft grass, too exhausted to care whether Luna would hold true to her promise of ravaging Nyx's sleep with nightmares.
The stars seemed to spin as Nyx closed his eyes.
