The soft ground sank deeper and deeper under Winnie's small, worn shoes as they neared the swamp, where the ground got softer and softer. To one side of her stood her mother, Ambrosia, and her little brother, Calville, and on the other side stood her older sister, Applesauce. Applesauce was only five years older, but she and Winnie weren't close. They were galaxies apart from each other, and because Applesauce was obsessed with almost every boy except Calville, Winnie was suck with him. When mama was cleaning or cooking and papa was working outside, when they were doing chores, everywhere.
