Author's Note
So this story came to mind out of sheer boredom. So yeah, there isn't much else to say.
Twilight's Mistake
Here she was, strung up in a tower alone, sad, and indestructible. Why did it have to happen this way? Why did she have to mess around with spells that she had no business messing with? It had only been a week since she killed her friends and now here she was alone with no hope of being happy again.
“Hey there Twi, yer one lucky mare.” Applejack let out a heavy cough, her old age getting the better of her. “I wish I were as young as I used to be.”
“Come on AJ, you still have a long time before you die, I know it.” Twilight smiled as best she could. No matter how much she said that, it didn’t change the fact that her friends would soon leave her.
“Hey now, don’t be tryin to tell this old mare that. It’s a lie and ya know it Twilight.” AJ smiled knowing that this was difficult for Twilight. She couldn’t blame her for wanting to keep her friends around especially after the death of her parents and her brother. It was hard but things were that way. Immortals lived for what seemed like forever and mortals live not near that long.
Rarity slowly walked over to the two with Pinkie Pie and the others following close behind. “Hello Twilight, how are you darling? Keeping your spirits up?” Twilight smiled as best she could but she couldn’t hide her sadness.
“Come on grumpy pants, be” Pinkie fell asleep standing up but got jabbed in the side by Rainbow Dash. “Who, what, where? What was I saying?”
“What Pinkie is trying to say is be happy, right Pinkie? Pinkie?” Rainbow turned her head to see that her pink friend had fallen asleep again. With a soft sigh, she jabbed Pinkie in the side.
“Oh yes what?” Pinkie rubbed her eyes knocking out the sleep crust from them.
“Wait, I know just what to do.” Before her friends could stop her, Twilight ran inside the castle and straight to the library.
“Consarnit, why did she have ta be so darn young. We ain’t exactly speedy no more.”
Twilight searched for a while looking for the one book that could save her friends. “Spike, I need your help.”
Spike came running the moment Twilight called. He was a large dragon, so large that he needed an entire room to himself. He had a bed the size of ten normal pony beds. He practically caused an earthquake in the castle as he walked. “What do you need Twilight?”
“I need the book on immortality.” Twilight began throwing books all over the place in search of that one book.
“Twilight, isn’t that the book that Celestia said nopony was to ever use. That’s why she gave it to you in a box, covered in chains, protected by a spell that only an Alicorn can break, and had me hide it in a top secret place that nopony would ever find it because the spells within could only cause more pain than it’s worth?” Spike asked in hopes that Twilight would come to her senses before she asked him to retrieve the book.
“Oh good, you remember, now go get it.” Twilight turned around tapping her hoof impatiently. Spike let out a sight and shook his head. “Spike, go get it. You’re my number one assistant for a reason, now go!”
Spike left all right but he had a different reason in mind before grabbing the book. He had to send a letter to Celestia before Twilight went completely mad.
Princess Celestia,
Twilight has completely lost it. She wants it!
Sincerely Spike.
With that short letter written, Spike sent it and then went to get the book and hopefully convince Twilight not to use it. He hid it somewhere where Twilight would never find it, under his bed. Twilight would never try to clean up under there no matter how dirty it got which is why it was the perfect hiding place. He still questioned Celestia’s decision to let them have it only for it to be kept hidden from Twilight who was supposed to be the one keeping it safe. It was all so confusing and messed up. Regardless, he grabbed the book and went back to Twilight. “Ok Twilight, here it is but please, don’t let the thought of losing your friends cause you to lose your sanity. Just let them go, don’t make them live on forever just because you don’t want to live without them.”
“Oh Spike, you silly dragon. I’m going to make them immortal as well as their families.” Twilight snatched the book and left the library to see her friends chasing slowly after her except for Pinkie who was asleep and being carried by Rarity’s magic. Twilight opened the book and prepared herself for the spell. Her friends except for Pinkie, tried to tell her to stop but Twilight had her Psycho face on. She was far too focused on what she was doing to listen to four old mares. The spell was simple, she just had to focus. Unfortunately Celestia and Luna burst into the room and made Twilight loose her concentration. The spell backfired and hit Celestia, Luna, and her pony friends. The castle was filled with a bright light.
“Twilight, what were you thinking, I told you never to use this spell.” Celestia screamed as the two alicorn sisters began to age rapidly. Their immortality was being sucked from them. Her friends on the other hoof had their ages sped up by a few years still dying before the two princesses did.
“No, this isn’t what was supposed to happen!” Twilight screamed and panicked as she tried to stop the spell. It was too late, the light vanished and in front of her were the seven skeletons of her friends. Guards seeing the light die down, rushed in to see what had happened.
“They are all dead, Princess Twilight, what have you done?” Twilight backed up as four guards surrounded her. “Arrest the Princess, she has killed Princess Celestia, Princess Luna and her friends.”
Twilight panicked again and began to fight back. The guards backed away knowing how dangerous Twilight could be and ran off to warn Ponyville. After that Twilight fell into a deep depression. This wasn’t what she wanted, she never intended to hurt anypony. She just didn’t want to lose her best friends but it was wrong nonetheless. Twilight had to face the fact that she had killed two princesses and her friends just so that she wouldn’t have to be alone. She was selfish and greedy, that’s all there was to it.
What made things worse was the effect the spell had on her. Not only did she kill her friends in the attempt to make them immortal, she stole the immortality of both princesses and now she couldn’t die. It made no sense but over the week, Twilight had tried on multiple occasions to kill herself. She had tried to hang herself, that failed the moment ten minutes went by and she was still waiting to choke to death. She tried slitting her throat but the wound healed immediately. She tried jumping off cliffs, taking too much meds, even stabbing herself repeatedly. It didn’t make any sense, how had she become invincible? She would probably never know as the book was taken from her.
The end of the week came and Spike finally had the courage to speak with Twilight. “Hey, Twilight, I know that this hasn’t been easy but-”
Twilight cut him off and stomped her hooves on the ground. “Easy, really Spike? I have been doing everything in my power to kill myself for the last week and nothing has been working. Even now I cut myself anywhere and everywhere hoping that just maybe I might die but it doesn’t work. Nothing will help me Spike so just get out of here. Don’t try and cheer me up. I have failed everypony in Equestria just because I didn’t want to lose my friends. Now I have to live with that memory and all you can say is that it hasn’t been easy?”
“Twilight, let me help, together.”
“NO!” Twilight shot a powerful magic bolt right at Spike. The bolt hit him and caused dust to float around in the air blocking view of Spike. When the dust cleared, Spike had a large hole in his stomach. Once she realized what she did, tears formed in her eyes. “Spike, how is that possible? You’re a dragon, your scales are tougher than anything in Equestria.”
“My scales may be…but my underbelly…isn’t so tough. We were…the best of friends Twilight…why would…you do this? Mayb” Spike let out one last breath before he died and just as the citizens of Ponyville swarmed in.
“She has killed another of her friends, get her!” Many of the pony’s swarmed Twilight and put her in chains. Her wings were spread out and chained where the wings connected to her body. Those chains were connected to the cuffs on her hooves. Twilight didn’t bother to fight back anymore, she didn’t have the strength to do so. She was dragged out behind the castle and brought into the tower that had been a watch tower but had been recently modified. Now it was a prison to hold Twilight. She was thrown in and chained up to the tower. The ponies set her down and put her neck in chains connected to the wall. With the switch of a lever and Twilight slowly moved up in the tower. The pony’s Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle all watched angrily and sad as Twilight moved up into the tower. Once Twilight reached the top of the tower, the sun shone in and placed her shadow on the wall. Her shadow only became darker when the door at the bottom shut tight. Twilight was left alone to raise and lower the Sun and Moon like she had done every morning and night the past week. Just outside surrounding the Castle were seven tombstones, soon to be eight.
As the years went by, the castle started to crumble. Twilight was still stuck up in the tower to do what Celestia and Luna had done for many years. Twilight cried every night before falling asleep and every morning after raising the sun but nopony could hear her and nopony cared. Twilight’s one mistake, cost her everything.
