Life on this Earth is underestimated by the people who reside there. They dream of fantasies such as being able to travel to different planets and different times, even different dimensions for that matter. But, when you get to doing that, you realize just how foolish that is. Sure, it’s exciting and absolutely brilliant, but you find yourself missing the home you once had. Being hunted and running for your life is not worth it, at all. That’s when you realize you need to find a home, somewhere you can live in peace… or as much of it as possible… and be able to live people you care about. And although it’s more dangerous to have people tag along, it gives purpose to what you do. And as a family, we have been running since the day we met. And we've been running ever since.
Narrator’s POV
A young boy awoke to a bright summer’s morning on a day like any other. He got changed and went to the kitchen for some breakfast. A slightly older girl was in the kitchen, cooking oddly-circular cakes alongside some sizzling bacon.
“What are those?” The boy asked, pointing to the strange cakes in the pan.
“The resident’s here call them ‘pancakes’, I read about them and they seemed really good. So I thought, why not give them a try?” The girl said.
“Will this be like the last time we tried to cook alien food?” The boy asked.
“That was different, these weren't alive in the first place. And if they were, I am armed so they can’t try to choke you when you stab them with a fork.” The girl said.
“Yeah, let’s not bring that up.” The boy said.
The girl chuckled, “You almost died back there, brother had to come in and defeat the Kung Pao Chicken himself.” The girl said, laughing.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure that wasn’t how you cooked Kung Pao Chicken in the first place.” The boy said.
“I followed the exact recipe in the book.” The girl said.
“And what book was that?” The boy asked.
“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The girl said.
The boy rolled his eyes and sat down at the table. He had never really trusted her to cook, much less trusted her to cook like the native species. If anyone should have been cooking, the boy thought it should have been him. Seeing as though her dishes had tried to kill him on multiple occasions. Anyhoo, he didn’t want to argue too much because he had something planned for today. He wanted to go down to the arcade to meet his friend without her and brother knowing. You see, it might be really odd if your girlfriend was an alien. But, it’s not like being an alien is going to stop him from pursuing his dreams. In fact, nobody besides brother and her knew that he was an alien. Plus, they had been in the same exact place in space-time for ten years. That was a new record for them together.
Soon after the “pancakes” were done, the meal was interrupted before it had even begun. Brother had burst in from the basement with sweat drenching his brow. He looked pretty beaten up, too.
“Were not safe here, not anymore, we need to move.” Brother said.
“What? What’s happened?” The girl asked, frightened.
“The Council has found us again.” Brother said.
“I thought you were allied with the council.” The boy said.
“Things happened and they didn’t need anyone like me anymore.” Brother said.
“So, what do we do now?” The girl said.
“We do what we do best, run. You need to send us to somewhere far away from here. Just like always.” Brother said.
“What do I do?” The boy asked.
“You pack your bags.” Brother said.
We rush of to do what we were told, though I don’t like it. Brother has protected us for a long time, and the boy just hoped he doesn't drop the ball now. Right now, the boy just focused on packing. He packed the some clothing, which included the multi-colored scarf Brother first gave him when he met him. He packed the Consort plushie that he had since he was a child. He also packed his photo album filled with pictures of his adventures and the pocket watch the girl had gave him. He assumed that these items were the most important to him. He also decided to take his Game Boy with him, just in case.
“I’m ready!” The boy yelled.
“Brother, where do you want us to shift to?” The girl asked.
“Wherever, just far away from here!” Brother said.
Soon, the girl started working on the machine. Powering it up with heaven-knows what. This was the machine we used with all our getaways. You see, when they disappear into a different dimension, they’re wiped off the map completely and the search is started from scratch. The boy always thought that it they always ran away because they are too cowardly to do anything else. You see, when faced with such strength as the enemies brother always makes, there’s no choice but to run. In fact, that may be the wisest choice at times. Just running away. Secretly, they all wished it wasn’t need to run. That they would find a place where they can live in harmony with everything else. Unfortunately, that is a dream we all know can never happen.
“Do you have it ready to go?” Brother said as he packed up his final thing, a package of Jelly Babies.
“It’s ready enough, though I don’t think this is the safest idea…” The girl said.
“Nothing we have ever done has been safe. Why should we start now?” Brother said as he held out his hand.
“Okay, I’m trusting you on this.” The girl said as she took brother’s hand. Then, with the other hand, the girl pulled a lever to activate the machine.
“You coming to?” Brother asked the boy.
“Yeah, don’t exactly have much choice.” The boy responded as he took brother’s other hand.
“Geronimo!” Brother said as he jumped onto the machine.
After that, things got really weird.
