The Definition of the heart
The door slammed shut as Scootaloo arrived home. She had to get to her room. She had to prove Sweetie wrong. She had to learn every word in the dictionary. Grabbing some dusty book Twilight had given her for her birthday, Scoots began to flick through A.
"A... Abate... Abdicable... Aberfan..."
The knowledge came through one ear then out the other, she couldn't do it. She had to sleep...
Scootaloo awoke. It was morning. How long had she been asleep? Before she knew it, she was at the school gates. Rainbow Dash was standing by the building.
"Rainbow! Are we gonna go flying this afternoon?"
RD glanced towards Scootaloo, then turned away as if she wasn't there.
"You mean 'I' am gonna fly this afternoon whilst you flap around like a chicken. Just give it up, Scoots, you'll never fly."
Scootaloo frowned, then realised Dash was joking.
"Yeah, I may be slow, but I'll catch up with you!"
Scootaloo tried to fly, but then she realised her wings had disappeared.
"Shut up, flightless bird."
No. Scootaloo couldn't believe it. She did have wings. She would fly. Scootaloo didn't care about school anymore. She rushed home and hid beneath her bed sheets. Shut up, flightless bird. Just give up! Flap around like a chicken. You'll never fly.
No.
Scootaloo cuddled herself and rocked slowly, just like she did back at Winsome Falls. Yet now, Rainbow wouldn't comfort her. She was all alone.
"Scoots, it's dinner time!"
What? But it was still morning... Oh. It was a dream. Hopefully.
"So then Rarity said 'Sweetie dear, go clean the dishes like a good girl'. Can you believe her?"
Apple Bloom laughed at Sweetie Belle's imitation of her sister. The CMC were walking to school, and Scoots was trudging along, ignoring her friends' conversation.
"What's up Scoots? How are you doing with the dictionary contest?"
"Shut up and leave me alone."
The two suddenly stopped at Scootaloo's remark as the grumpy Pegasus continued to walk, not even phased by her meanness. What was up? Throughout the day, Scootaloo remained silent and grumpy, yet she gave a sigh of relief as the bell went. Time to head home and mope more. She would never fly. Just might as well become a nopony.
"Hey, why's my favourite filly down in the dumps?"
No. It couldn't be. Why, of everypony in the world did it have to be-
"Errm, hey Rainbow Dash."
The 6-tone maned soon-to-be-Wonderbolt watched from a cloud as Scootaloo trudged onwards. Diving with immense speed, Rainbow landed in front of Scoots. She simply walked around. Confused as why she would ignore her idol, RD began to trot alongside Scoots. Rainbow knew something was wrong. And she had to find out what. Though she never was the sort of pony who would talk about feelings, Rainbow asked a Scootaloo politely what was wrong. Then it all came out.
"RAINBOW I KNOW I WONT FLY BUT I REEEAAAALLY WANT TO SO PLEASE LET ME KEEP TRYING I WONT DISAPOINT YOU I JUST...want...to...fly."
Rainbow Dash looked sorrowfully at Scootaloo, and began to reply.
"Whatever goes on, you know you can always talk to me about it!"
"Errm... I just did."
Sheepishly, Rainbow scratched the back of her neck.
"I kinda stopped listening after 'RAINBOW'. You were saying?"
Scootaloo smiled whilst shaking her head, and said her fair-dos to Rainbow Dash. When she got home, she took out a eon and paper and began to write.
Dictionary Stuff chapter 1:
The definition of the word 'heart'.
Hearts are not just those red shapes you see on Valentines day, yet something a lot more important. Everypony has one, even the ones you don't expect. I've learnt not to presume nopony loves you, yet to think about what having a heart is. If you think anypony you know has any of these traits, then you know they must like you.
Signing off,
Scootaloo
Yawning, Scootaloo fell onto her bed and fell asleep.
