Moving In

I had gotten off the boat from Ludesma to Equestria at some time around eight this morning. The boat dock led to a parking lot which had two roads to take, one to the capitol, Canterlot, and the other to a city at the heart of equestria, Ponyville. I chose the second road, it headed to what I believed to be a town that should be a less expensive place to live seeing that I had only brought fifteen hundred dollars.

The road was long and dusty, cars constantly drove past, forcing me to step of the dirt path into the grass which looked mostly dead this far away from civilization.

"I wish I could just fly there, I would have been there freaking half an hour ago." I grunted at myself angrily as I checked my watch, I had been walking for nearly two hours. I mean it was my fault that my wings were currently wrapped up in bandages, I really should have been more careful.

-One month prior-

"Sparks get your damn head down!" Chief shouted at me from a few barricades down, He was crouched behind his barrier, the butt of his gun placed firmly against his shoulder, his finger on the trigger. I followed his instructions and ducked down behind the barrier, just in time too, because as soon as I ducked bullets flew through the spot my head was before and embedded themselves in the wall behind me.

" Ready to move chief?" I yelled over a spray of bullets, which just bounced off of the metal barricades we were ducking behind. He nodded to me and slung his rifle over his back, at his sign of agreement, we both unlatched the wheels on the barricade and began to slowly wheel them forward. We both temporarily stopped as we heard mortars being fired off behind us. I quietly counted the five rounds as they were fired off in my head before we began to slowly roll forward again, inching towards the enemy.

"Wait!" Chief shouted snapping the latches back to keep the wheels from moving when he did not want them to, when I saw him do this, I did the same. The battlefield had gone silent. I looked back over my shoulder at the mortar team and they stood prepared to fire, they appeared to be scouring the land for enemies.

"Keep your head down boys, all tangoes have just disappeared. We believe they are using rabbit holes so watch your six and stay put." A voice crackled over the radio, easily audible in the quiet landscape. Chief motioned for me to answer the radio as he shouldered his weapon, still awkwardly crouched behind the metal barrier, which was now riddled with dents from bullets previously fired.

"Roger that, Tango two six niner, We will hold our position until the enemy reappears, and if you see those bastards pop out of those holes, Smoke 'em." I responded into the radio shouldering my weapon as soon I had put the walkie back onto my waistline.

"You got it Foxtrot six two one." Tango two six niner responded over the radio before the battlefield was enveloped in silence. I slowly slid down along the shield until I was seated, I had a feeling those ponies wouldn't be poking up their ugly heads for a while. Chief looked over at me and quietly chuckled at me.

"what? I'm watching our six." I proclaimed with as serious a face as possible, only to bust into a small chuckle after saying it. The color in Chiefs face drained and his look went to one of almost pure terror, he was looking over my shoulder. I heard three gunshots in rapid succession, two from behind and one from chiefs gun. I breathed a sigh of relief that I was alright, until I realized he still had a look of fear stuck to his face.

I opened my mouth to speak but then it snapped shut due to the immense pain that shot through my body, emanating from my wings. My knees buckled and I fell forward into the sand, screaming in pain through my still clenched teeth.

"Don't worry Sparks we'll get through this, I got you man. Can you move? can you walk?" I heard chief say over my body, he sounded distant.

"My Tow Belt." I muttered and attempted to reach for the belt which was rolled up and placed in a case fashioned onto my belt. Chief realized what I was talking about and removed the two foot black belt from its pouch, he then hitched it onto the latch which rested between my wings, and the one that was hooked to his belt. Chief began to back up slowly dragging my useless body along the ground, blood dripping from my wings and smearing along the ground as I was being pulled. I unholstered my gun to fire on any ballsy kaikrussians who decided to pop out of the holes. I heard the sounds of mortars firing above us, although they sounded farther away, my consciousness quickly faded after that.

I had been walking all day, and the sun was going down, the temperatures were dropping drastically. A dusty green road sign told me that ponyville was still ten miles away, with a feeling of dread from realization that I wouldn't make it before it was so dark I wouldn't be able to see. There was a bar across the road directly across from the old road sign, hoping to stop in for a drink or a ride.

"we're closed" The bartender said, wiping down the counters which had a pinkish looking alcohol dripping from. I stood staring at him blankly, still processing what he had said, my brain tired from walking all day.

"Guy. we are closed, get out! I gotta get to town soon." The bartender said, pausing what he had been doing, to turn and look to me.

"could you give me a ride to town? Please I could pay you. I'm just moving in from out of country and I don't have anywhere to stay." I pleaded taking a step closer, resting my hand on my duffle bag.

"Look I don't just give rides to strangers, but there is an old mattress in the out back and you could sleep there for the night. There is also an old bike out back and you can have that, someone brought that got drunk and then never came back for it." The bartender said pointing to a backdoor down a hall to his left.

I thanked the man half heartedly and went out the door he had pointed, as soon as it had closed I heard it lock behind me. Everything the man had said was true, there was a dingy old mattress, covered in alcohol stains, the old bike layed on its side next to the bed. With a sigh I layed down and closed my eyes using my duffle bag as a makeshift pillow, almost as soon as my eyes closed I fell asleep.

I woke up just as the sun was starting to rise and took a granola bar out of my duffle bag. I ate it without thinking about it and stood up off the bed, luckily the bike was still there. I stood it up and sat on it, it was to early for this shit. With a yawn I pushed down on the pedals and began to ride towards the town, I figured if I pedaled at a decent rate I should be there in about an hour.

The sun was raised decently high in the sky once I made it into town and I stopped by the message board to look and see if there was anyone renting out a room. There was a hand written note that gave an address and a name: Rarity. I pedaled to the address, the house was large and the design made it look almost like it was frilly. I parked the bike in her driveway next to an extremely fancy car that resembled a Mercedes.

I knocked three times heavily on the door and then fell silent to listen for someone approaching the door. As I waited for this, rarity, person to appear I pulled on my light sweatshirt, I felt it would look nicer than just a tank top, which is what I had on before. I contemplated turning around and leaving because it was so quiet but then I heard footsteps on the stairs. The door swung open revealing a stark white pony with purple hair, she was wearing a thick, sleeveless nightgown.

"Oh I'm sorry if I woke you." I said as I realized that she was still in her night gown, and it made me feel slightly bad.

"Oh No darling, I have been awake for hours, and who are you?" She asked as politely as possible but still sounded slightly rude.

"I'm here for the room. Is it still open?" I stated then asked with a sort of sheepish grin rubbing the back of my neck, hoping she would say that it wasn't.

"Yes its still open, please come in and sit on the couch while a go fetch the paperwork and get changed into something more appropriate, and what did you say your name was?" she asked as she began to walk out of sight, stepping away from the door but leaving it open for me.

"Ember. Ember Sparks." I said as I stepped into the house behind her looking at the frilly interior, I sat on the couch, which was across from an arm chair, separated by a coffee table. Rarity joined me ten minutes later wearing a pin stripe three piece suit, she was also holding a small packet of probably about ten pages of legal documents.

" Alright Mr. Sparks if you don't mind I am just going to ask a few questions. First off, would you mind showing me your Cutie mark?" She asked gesturing to my jacket. I nodded at her and rolled my sleeve up which revealed my cutie mark, a set of sparks as if coming off of a welder. She nodded and wrote something down in her packet.

"And how did you get it darling?" she asked pausing her pen, ready to write down what I was going to say.

"Well I have always enjoyed tinkering with things, toys, phones, radios, and one day as I was trying to invent something I was welding two pieces of black steel together and then it kind of just appeared." I explained as I rolled my jacket sleeve back down. She scribbled on her pad of paper, it confused me that she was documenting such trivial information.

"Have you rented before? Do you own any guns?" She asked again pausing with the pen poising it above her paper, lower down than before.

"I haven't rented before, I used to own a house. Yes I own a gun, I am naturally suspicious of other ponies." She nodded at the first sentence but her face seemed to flinch in fear at the second, but only shortly, returning to a calm and collected mask as she scribbled on the paper.

"Last question Mr. Sparks, why do you need to rent this room?" she asked her final question and it seemed like an easy one, although I realized she probably asked this to everyone.

"I just moved here from Ludesma, I moved because I was injured in the war and wanted to leave the country before war ruined it. " I said flatly trying to be professional even though I had abandoned my country in a time of war, " I actually have a quick question as well, what made you want to rent out the room?"

"My Younger sister passed on a month ago and I-I am sick of looking at the empty room." She choked, out a single tear rolling down the side of her face. After recollecting herself she went to the computer and began to type quite furiously, I assumed she was doing some background checks to find if there was any dirt on me. After about twenty minutes she handed me the packet and instructed me where to sign, she also informed me it was a five hundred dollar payment up front and two hundred dollars a month. Glad that she had decided I could rent the room I gave her seven hundred dollars, the five hundred up front and the two hundred for the month.

Rarity had allowed me to put my bike in the garage and showed me two my room, second on the right. The room was barren, a plain white dresser stood on one side of the bed, a plain white night stand with a lamp on top stood on the other side. The bedspread was a light purple, matching the curtains that hung in front of a large window, longer than it was tall. I smiled as I set my duffle bag full of my tools and my gun, onto the bed and sat down next to it, it was about nine o clock so it wasn't time for lunch but It would be soon. I figured I might as well lay back and take a nap, just a short hour long nap.

I closed my eyes to the peaceful silence, only to have the silence broken by an earth shattering explosion off in the distance.

Author's Note

I originally posted this a few days ago but got an unbelievable amount of dislikes and quite a few comments telling me what to do so I changed the main characters name and slowed down the read because people said it felt too rushed. I also added a bit of logic to the story, I know this chapter may have been boring but trust me the next however many will be more action packed! Tell me what you thought below.
