In the near future, after a thousand years of ruling on her own, Celestia has become a power-hungry tyrant. Banishing Luna, to an unknown location (not the moon :P) and enforcing complete power over Equestria, requiring each city in the nation to satisfy the needs of the capitol city, Canterlot; where the rich live and are oblivious to the suffering in the outside world.

Including to Celestia's rein, she has established The Canterlot Games, where every year the population of a small village must battle to the death until one remains victor. This victor will be given the reward to live in Canterlot and experience its luxuries. The Canterlot Games is a form of entertainment for the ponies of Canterlot, and Celestia herself; while the rest of Equestria watches in shame.

For the 24th Canterlot Games, Ponyville is chosen to compete.
