Don’t Pass Me By
“Why hello Rainbow Dash. What brings you to my shop on this beautiful day?”

“I think it’s from a secret admirer.”
“Oooh, how mysterious, not to mention romantic! Any guesses as to who it may be?”
“No, and I read it a bunch of times.”
“Yes, and…?”
“And… well… I got nothing…”
“Well, perhaps if you were to divulge the contents of this missive, it would help…hmmm?”
“Yeah, uh, right…”
“You haven’t a clue as to what I just said, have you.”
“I haven’t.”
“What does the letter say?”
“You know Rarity, you should try speaking normally once in a while.”
“I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Never mind – You know I’ve gotten fan letters before and usually they’re all “you’re my hero, you’re the awesomest of the awesomest, totally rad, cool, you know, that typical kind of stuff. Sometimes it’s love letters but they’re from colts who really don’t know how to write yet. They tell me how boss they are, how wicked. It’s pretty obvious when I get those - They can’t decide if they want to fly with me or fu-”
“Indeed... I take it that the tone of this letter is somewhat different. A bit more personal?”
“Yeah…pretty much.”
“Well do you intend to share its contents with me or not? I don’t see how I can be of assistance without knowing what we’re dealing with.”
“Oh, right. Here-“
“Dear Rainbow Dash,
This letter is kind of hard to write. I’ve always thought of you as a friend, though we haven’t had as much time together as I’d like, even when we were prepping for the Equestria Games. Not only are you strong and really athletic, but I think you’re really cute and funny, even though I’ve never told you that in person. Some ponies think you are just a fathead but I think you’re confident and self-assured not to mention an amazing flyer. I’d tell you who I am but I’m afraid you would laugh. We are both into athletics and I figured it might be fun for us to get together when we aren’t both involved in some kind of athletic event. I really enjoyed the time we got to hang out when we were getting ready for the games; it was fun, even though it was really uncomfortable when Spike sang the Cloudsdale anthem. I wanted to crawl under the winner’s platform.
When we were together, preparing for the games, I discovered that I had strong feelings for you. Now I just can’t stop thinking about you. I've even had dreams about you recently. Things got very romantic, and when I woke up I was broken hearted that it was only a dream. I wanted you so much that it hurt. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’d like to be more than friends.
I’m not ready to tell you who I am yet, but I wanted to let you know that I love you.”

“And you really have no idea who this could be?”
“Not a clue. Look I suck at this kind of stuff. Romance is your department.”

“Well darling, if you had to pick somepony, someone who comes to mind that might have written this, who would it be?”

“Well, I guess Soarin from the Wonderbolts.”
“Exactly. That was my thought as well. Why so reluctant to consider him?”
“Well, I don’t know how I feel about him. He’s a great flyer and all and is pretty cool, even when Spitfire basically screwed him over when we were prepping at Rainbow Falls. He’s not all uptight. We hung out a little when I was at the academy, but mainly I was with that jerk Lightning Dust. Oh – did you hear about her?!! She hooked up with Trixie!”
“Your’re KIDDING!!”
“I shit you not!”
“Rainbow, must you use such vulgar language?”
“Sorry Rares but I never pegged Trixie for a fillyfooler. Did you?”
“Are you kidding darling? She has incredibly suppressed feelings for Twilight. That pony is madly in love with our little Princess.”
“NO WAY! Does Twilight know?”
“Seriously Dash?”
“Yeah, I guess she’s as clueless as me in that area.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.”
“Very funny, Rares. How did you find out that Trix was hot for Twi?”
“Well, do you recall Sunny Fleur - that matron in Canterlot who was hosting the art show when I was there? It was right before Twilight’s birthday. I introduced you to her at the garden party."
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Well apparently Sunny grew up with Trixie’s mother and they have remained very close friends. When I was introduced to Ruby at the gallery, I had no idea that the elegant blue unicorn was the mother of that nasty little piece of work.
“Wait, Trixie’s mother’s name is Ruby ?
“Why yes. Does that strike you as odd?”
“Well, yeah kinda. Ruby’s are red, right? And she’s blue right? Just weird.”
“Yes, I suppose it is. In any event, there we were, sipping our champagne when the topic of families came up. She was a few glasses ahead of me and began to lament how she’d just discovered that her youngest daughter was a fillyfooler. She had found a box under her bed with all these pictures of some mare. Most were innocent, but there were several that were… well…suffice to say they were not the sort of thing one would want made public. As if that weren't enough, it was clear that the mare of her affections had no idea that her picture was being taken. I, of course, tried to be supportive and sympathetic. Ruby told me that she confiscated the box and destroyed its contents. Trixie never asked her about it.”
“Wow… so?”
“Well I’d forgotten about it. That is until Twilight’s coronation. The six of us were with Luna and Celestia, at the receiving line greeting the guests when I spotted her in the line. She didn’t look too well; she kept staring at Twilight, who did look beautiful in that gown I designed. I was looking forward to saying hi again to Ruby, but when she got to me she barely seemed to recognize me. I had to remind her, but even then she seemed lost in her thoughts. Later on, as I danced with Big Mac, I saw her enter the topiary maze with Sunny. After the dance I excused myself and went to look for her. While hunting through that dreadful shrubbery, I heard Sunny’s voice – it’s unmistakable. The two of them were sitting in one of the bench alcoves along the shrubbery wall and I was on the other side of the hedge. I was going to call out and come around but then I heard Ruby say:
‘I was shocked when I saw the new princess. I felt awful. Of all the ponies my little Trixie had to fall for, she picks a future princess!! And when do I discover this? At the receiving line of her coronation! When I looked at her all I could see were those pictures! She seems like such a dear, sweet thing. The way Princess Celestia looked at her, such love and pride. The more I looked at her, the more ashamed I became, I couldn’t stop seeing those pictures in my mind. I will say she was quite attractive in them, preoccupied as she was, and I must say she was very preoccupied. With respect to her methods for, *ahem* gratification, they were, well, somewhat outside the typical. In any event there I was, standing in her receiving line to honor her as our new princess and wondering how I was going to look her in the eye when we were introduced.’”

“Indeed.”

“Apparently Twilight was reading a book while lying on her stomach as she straddled her hoof. Subsequent pictures showed her with her eyes closed in obvious ecstasy and finally with her teeth gritted and her eyes closed as, she, you know -finished. ”

They said they were old friends and it just so happened that Trixie needed a place to stay so Lightning invited her to stay in the hotel room with them.“

“Yeah, right? So Bulk and Desert were up in Bulk’s room watching a training video, drinking protein shakes and getting psyched for the event that night. They ran out of the powder and went down to Desert’s room to get more. They walk in and Trixie is in bed, covered in all these blankets, pretending she’s sleeping – in the middle of the afternoon. Now these two muscle heads are not exactly bright, but even they are a little curious. Trixie pretends that she’s really tired and asks to be left alone, but she can’t stop twitching and whimpering.”

Blueblood’s treatment of me destroyed a great many of dreams that I’d had since fillyhood of princes and being swept away -this whole fantasy I’d created. Luna showed me how special and lucky I was to have the love of my family and friends, and if I haven’t said it recently, in all seriousness, I love you Rainbow Dash, so dearly, and I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself for letting my ego almost destroy your dream that day. And then on top of it, you saved my life. Luna helped me realize I should never take for granted my friendship with you and the others, and to tell those that I love that I love them, so once again, for being there and for putting up with me and all my trivialities, and never forget that I love you. “Hmmm, still won’t reveal his identity.”

“I’ve no doubt you could, nor do I think he has any doubt of it either. So perhaps it is just an innocent request in an effort to simply enjoy an evening with you.”

“That, my dear Dash, is a question only you can answer. He does seem to be very much in love with you though. This is quite the letter. It sounds as if he spent some time and put a great deal of effort into writing it based upon what’s here…
“… If you decide that you’re not ready for a relationship, I’ll understand, but I ask that you give me a chance. Since we met and spent time together I can’t stop thinking about you, and it’s only gotten worse with each passing day. I’ve become almost useless at my work and I find myself aching for you. You’d probably have a tough time imagining me shedding tears, but I do, every night and every morning, thinking about you and wishing you were with me, just by my side. You are such a great spirit, something that has been lacking in my life. You are so bold and brave and sweet.

“Well Rainbow, should you decide to go, I’d be more than happy to accompany you and offer moral support, should you think you need me. Oh wait, what am I saying? Sapphire is coming here to spend the weekend going over the designs for her next tour!”
“That’s really nice of you anyway Rares, and I’d ask you, but I think I need to do this one on my own.”
“So you’re going?”

“Good for you! When is the train?”
“Well he says that he’ll be at the restaurant's bar at 7 this Friday, that's the day after tomorrow. He even got me a sleeper, so I guess I’ll catch a train late tomorrow afternoon and check into the hotel in the morning.”
“That’s great! Sapphire Shores is going to be here tomorrow on the 2:00 train! You can meet her! She’s checking out the dresses and then taking me and Sweetie Belle out to dinner. That’s why Sweetie was so excited when you got here. She and Sapphire really hit it off when they met. Hear her squealing upstairs? She’s so excited.”

I don’t know about this.
Maybe I should just leave. Do I really like Soarin? He seems nice enough and he is cute.

“Soarin. Well I’m not even sure it’s him…”

“Well I got these letters, love letters. He didn’t sign his name, but I’m pretty sure it’s him. I did some checking up and found out that the Wonderbolts are doing an exhibition show up in Flankers. It’s just north of the city, in Witherschester County. It’s only about 15 miles away. He could get here in no time. But it’s already 7:45. I guess he changed his mind.”
“Oh, that’s a shame. So what can I get you?”
“Oh, nothing. You know what, I feel kinda beat. I think I’ll just go to my room.”
“Oh, Ms. Dash, please don’t. And don’t look so sad... and don’t be ridiculous - you’re having dinner with me. My treat!”
“Really? Wow that’s really nice.”
“Well you were such a help at the games. And who knows, he may show up anyway. Excuse me - Waitress ? Oh hello Bella, I didn't recognize your new hairstyle. Is my table ready? Thank you. So, Ms. Dash - shall we?"

What You're Doing
The view from Rainbow’s room was amazing. The window took up an entire wall and looked out over the city where a million tiny stars dusted the buildings.
"Wow..."
A somewhat tipsy rainbow maned Pegasi removed her dress and dropped it on the floor before flopping down face first on one of the big pillows at the head of the circular queen sized bed. She lay there letting the coolness of the pillowcase against her face relax her, the scent coming from it was nice. It was a little musky but a little spicy too, even a little familiar, As she lay there she began to feel oddly restless - especially between her legs. Leaning to her side, she slid her right hoof under her, tucking it between her legs, then rolled back on her stomach. She began to move her hoof, twisting it and relishing the building want down there. After the bellpony had left, Dash sat on the bed and turned the key over in her hoof. She noticed that on the key's edge, a very tiny number was stamped. "1235" She went and got her key. It was stamped 2269. Her room number.

She slipped the key into the lock and turned. The lock disengaged and she turned the knob and opened the door.
The room was nice, moderate, nowhere near as palatial as Dash's though.
Lying asleep on the bed was Harmony Harshwhinny. Dash cleared her throat. No response. She went over to the left side of the bed and sat down.
Dash put her hoof on Harshwhinny's shoulder and shook it lightly. .

No response. The wastepaper basket was filled to overflowing with crumpled tissues. There among them a bright red ribbon tied into a bow caught her eye. It was for sleeping pills and it had been filled yesterday.

She immediately put her head to Harshwhinny's chest. A faint heartbeat.

A brass arm extended down from above the table. Attached to the end of it was a metal cylinder of brass. It was shaped like a penis and looked cold and frightening. Luna walked to her, sat down and put her arms around her, then wrapped her large midnight blue wings around the little cyan pony, completely encompassing her.
In all her life, Rainbow Dash had never felt so completely safe or secure. She let all her pain burst through her walls and she cried out in agony. The pain had become unbearable. Dash let go of her legs and turned toward her princess and returned the hug, holding her and crying.

Luna leaned over and kissed Dash on the bridge of her muzzle. She held her lips there for awhile, sensing the pure joy that radiated off the cyan pony.
"Guess it's time to wake up, eh sis?"
"So soon?" Luna asked with a little sad smile, but those two words filled Dash's heart with light. She looked into Luna's eyes.

"I love you too Rainbow Dash. Give thyself time to think. Feelings are complicated and love far more so, though it is the simplest thing ever."

Dash smiled, and stretched and yawned.

My poor beloved Dashie. This all takes place before the events with AJ and Twi in Ponyville. That's why Dash is the way she is in that book. She drinks too much at the party and is generally out of control. There is one more chapter in this book that is very very important. and then the story moves on to Something. This is as good a place as any to mention that I need to return to Blackbird. So much depends on the history that takes place there. I will tell you this - Elite Pegasi were not the result of some cute experiment.
