Shortly after watching his close friend, Shirley Fenette, die in his arms, Lelouch sulks in his quarters of the Black Knight's battleship, blaming the existence of Geass for her death.

After Lelouch creates a heated fallout with his 'brother', Rolo, C.C. jokingly tells him he should be more kind. He stalks into his quarter's restroom and accidentally does just that.

But the power of Geass is a fickle thing.

Instead of just making him kinder to follow the order, Geass removes Lelouch's spirit entirely, placing him into an unknown body in an entirely unknown country.
