Rosie Quills, a young Pegasus mare, works for the Ponyville Gazette. Her dream is to have one of her stories be featured on the front page of the paper. Soon it will be time for the editor to pick out reporters to travel to the Crystal Empire to cover the Equestria Games. The editor tells Rosie that if she wants to be one of the reporters to go, she must publish a story that makes the front page by the end of the month. One day, while looking for a story, Rosie stumbles across a crystal unicorn named Aqua Gem. However Aqua Gem appears to have a case of amnesia, and can't remember anything but her name. After Rosie takes her in, the two make a deal. If Aqua Gem helps her make the front page, she'll bring Aqua to the Crystal Empire to see if she can recover her memories.
