Precipitation, Reparation, and Reconciliation.
The rain fell gently outside of Silver Spoon’s window. The day was beginning on a dreary note it seemed. Her life never seemed to change much from the same monotonous routine. She would wake up; go to school where she and her best friend Diamond Tiara would berate the Cutie Mark Crusaders. After school would let out, her personal escort would arrive to pick her up and take her home, but today just felt different. Firstly, Diamond Tiara never showed up and neither had Applebloom. This seemed rather strange considering both mares were known for their perfect attendance record and their punctuality. The afternoon seemed grey and static without her friend. Ms. Cheerilee seemed rather fatigued and frustrated for the majority of the day which was highly uncharacteristic of her. Lastly, her escort hadn’t shown up at his pre-determined time. Silver Spoon began to worry; she feared that something was amiss yet she wasn’t quite certain of what it could have been. Still, the uneasy feeling in her stomach refused to go away.
Silver Spoon watched from the curb as Sweetie Belle bid Scootaloo ado. She watched as the unicorn disappeared from her view. Now she was left alone on the curbside with Scootaloo. The orange coated pegasus pulled a pair of earbuds from her jacket pocket and jammed them into her ears. After fidgeting with her phone’s volume, Scootaloo put the device back into her jacket. Silver Spoon could hear what sounded like Bebop swing jazz. She didn’t expect to hear that kind of music on Scootaloo’s playlist; then again, she didn’t know Scootaloo enough to have assumed otherwise.
Silver glanced upward to the sky and noticed the grey clouds rolling in from the east. No storms had been forecast for the day but eventually there would come a day when the weather got a little lazy and let a few clouds slip by undetected. The first droplet landed upon her brow, and dripped down her cheek before she wiped the precipitation away with a hoof.
“Of all the days it has to rain today would be it.” Silver Spoon grumbled aloud. As if on cue, more droplets bombarded her coat. She noticed Scootaloo tucking her buds into her jacket as she flipped up the hood. Silver was growing very concerned very quickly as to why her servant was not here yet. It was unlike him to be tardy considering he’s being paid to do so. She also began to wonder why Scootaloo’s parents hadn’t shown up either; not that she cared about her anyway.
The wealthy mare was beginning to feel a sense of loneliness from waiting. She wanted to hold some form of interaction with somepony, regardless of who the only available pony was. Fortunately for her, it would be easier than she expected.
“Can I ask you a legitimate question?” Scootaloo asked out of the blue. The question caught Silver Spoon off guard.
“Uh, sure, be my guest.”
“Do you like Diamond Tiara?”
“Well of course I do, I wouldn’t be friends with her if I didn’t.”
“That’s not what I meant. Perhaps I should rephrase the question. Do you like her as more than just a friend?”
“Well duh, she is my best friend; I like her more than any of my other friends.”
“Well, she is your only friend so that would make sense, but that’s not what I am asking, I am asking if you love Diamond Tiara.”
“Ew, gross, no way! Just the prospect of a filly-fooler disgusts me!” There was a pause as more rain fell from the sky.
“So what if you discovered that she thought of you in that manner… what then?” Silver opened her mouth to rebuttal but immediately rejected her response. What if Scootaloo were right? Her and Diamond had been friends since before they could walk and talk so it wasn’t unlikely to believe that Diamond garnered romantic feelings for her. Perhaps Silver had done the same without realizing it. She always thought that DT was beautiful and smart but love; that seemed rather strong.
“Well why does it matter to you anyway?” She finally responded with her trademarked attitude.
“Just an inquiry.” There was another long pause. The light droplets of rain had developed into a steady drizzle and both mares were getting relatively wet. Silver began to shiver as the wind picked up, adding a stinging cold to the already chilly raindrops.
“Do you think we should head back into the school house before this gets too heavy?” Scootaloo suggested.
“Yes please.” They both hurried to the safety of the schoolhouse. Ms. Cheerilee had left immediately following dismissal. She usually stayed for about an hour grading papers and making the lesson plan for the next day. The school had been modified over the years and no longer wreaked of its childish essence. Most of the students were older teenagers anyway so it made no sense to treat them like foals. It still had its dull red paint scheme but without the silly hearts and frilly tapestry. Luckily the awning covering the front entrance remained, though it didn’t provide ample protection. The wind was blowing the rain underneath the shelter of the small awning. Silver Spoon wiggled the doorknob to no avail.
“Damnit, it’s locked. What do we do now?”
“I’ll check the windows quickly.” Scootaloo left the cover of the awning to investigate whether the windows could be opened. The rain had now gotten fairly heavy and loud. Silver anxiously waited for Scootaloo’s return. The pegasus came back with a frustrated look on her face.
“Not a single one.” Silver Spoon was growing more discouraged with each passing second. She was wet and cold and there was no sign of anyone that could help. She looked off into the distance and saw nothing but nasty clouds for miles. Lightning cracked the sky in a brilliant display of intricate light. Thunder soon followed the bolt. It rolled through the air with gentleness about it. The weather was far from gentle though. Scootaloo glanced at Silver Spoon and noticed her body shivering and her teeth chattering with great vigor. She removed her jacket and rung out all the water she could from the soggy article of clothing. She held it out towards Silver.
“Here, it’s a little damp but it’s something.”
“Won’t you be c...cold then?”
“Nah, I was never bothered by the cold.” Silver gladly took the jacket and put it on. Scootaloo was right about it being damp but it served her better than her drenched fur.
“Isn’t your butler supposed to get you after school?”
“Emphasis on the word supposed. Why haven’t your parents come to pick you up, surely they should be concerned for you by now.” Scootaloo’s demeanor changed instantly. Her face burned and her mouth became dry. Silver noticed and grew concerned. “What’s wrong? Was it something I said?”
“W…well my parents would be concerned but…” She shied away before finishing the sentence.
“But what?”
“But, they aren’t here anymore.” Scootaloo’s eyes became misty.
“Did they move away or something?”
“No, they’re dead.” Silver drew back from the unexpected response. Now Silver Spoon felt uncomfortable. She wasn’t sure how to respond.
“I’m truly sorry to hear that, why have you not mentioned this before?”
“I did, but only some cared enough to listen.” Silver Spoon felt a wave of guilt rush over her. All the nasty remarks she had made now piled onto her shoulders and burdened her.
Both mares now sat completely silent on the steps leading towards the school entrance; neither wanting to further the awkward conversation.
The rain beat down at an unrelenting velocity making it difficult to both see and hear. Silver Spoon found it all to be very stressful yet Scootaloo found solace in it. The stormy days always reminded her of the better days. She never understood her own reasons for enjoying the rain so much but she never really cared either. It just made her feel better when nothing else did.
“Can I be honest with you Scootaloo?” Silver Spoon spoke up.
“Now would be a rather good time to start I suppose.”
“I don’t enjoy heckling the three of you; I never have. I only do it because Diamond wants me to.”
“So what you’re saying is that after figuring out that I am an orphan and you feel pity for me, now is the time to suddenly admit this ‘inner guilt’ that you have?”
“No Scootaloo, that’s not how it is. I am being completely genuine, I was never raised to be the pony that I am but DT molded me into this heartless creature and I hate it. You don’t deserve the things that we say and do to you, nopony does.”
“Then why do it?”
“I guess I’m just afraid.”
“Afraid of what? Diamond’s disapproval. When are you going to realize that she doesn’t own you? You aren’t a piece of property that she can buy and sell with her daddy’s money.”
“Maybe it’s because we have been friends for so long that I have started to develop her habits and always believed that what she did was acceptable.”
“If you ask me, that isn’t a friend; what you’re describing is a parasite. Why do you think that Applebloom, Sweetie Belle and I get along so well? It’s because we learn from each others mistakes, and through that we grow not only as individuals but as a unit. Here is a bit of advice, don’t let others dictate the path that needs to be taken on your own. It’s okay to ask for directions but don’t let them take the wheel.”
“I guess you’re right.” Silver Spoon took several moments to comprehend what Scootaloo said; perhaps her relationship with Diamond Tiara wasn’t a beneficial one. The more she thought about it, the more of what Scootaloo said made sense.
“Scootaloo, can you forgive me for everything that I’ve ever said and done to you?”
“That depends; can you make that change and stop depending on Diamond Tiara for everything?”
“Yes, I promise I will.”
“Then I suppose atonement is in order.”
“Thank you Scootaloo, I appreciate your willingness to look past my faults and help. Something Diamond has not yet learned.”
Scootaloo nodded in approval. “I guess this is where I apologize as well.”
“For what, you never did anything wrong?”
“It’s not what I did wrong, rather for something I could’ve done right. I could’ve have been your friend from the get-go but I decided against it for some reason. I could’ve prevented all this pent up animosity from ever mounting. I take it upon myself for not being open with ponies when I first came to this school. I was always afraid of being harassed for being an orphan even when I saw no fault in it. I was ashamed over the fact that I couldn’t fly at an age where most fillies could and I was afraid people would think of me differently if they had found out.”
“Well if it’s any consolation, I think of you differently from everyone else, but in a good way.” Scootaloo furrowed her brow in confusion; unsure of what Silver Spoon meant.
“How so?”
“Well you’re headstrong for what it’s worth. That’s not a bad thing mind you. A delightful kind of stubborn is the best way I can describe it, and I’ve never met anypony else that possesses such an attribute.”
“So being hard-headed is special to you?” Scootaloo was still puzzled.
“Not in the sense that you are difficult to handle, which I can’t say is true; but in the sense that you are a confident and proud mare. You stand steadfast in what you believe and you don’t allow people to affect you. That is admirable in my book.” Scootaloo blushed slightly. Not often was she complimented on being thick skinned.
“Never thought of it that way, thanks Silvy” Now Silver Spoon could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. Scootaloo had already given her a nickname after just beginning this budding friendship. Diamond Tiara never gave her a nickname. It felt oddly special and somewhat flattering at the same time.
The rain continued to pour, flooding the streets and grass. No remorse for anything in its wake. Any normal pony would fear this type of monsoon but not Scootaloo or Silver Spoon. It didn’t bother them anymore. They were simply enjoying their time together. It was a blessing of companionship that Silver Spoon deeply desired and a blessing of rapprochement for Scootaloo.
Several minutes passed in pure silence, nothing but the sounds of rain and rolling thunder in the distance; a tranquil sound that both mares now cherished. To them it represented their friendship and comradery. Silver Spoon felt comfortable near Scootaloo and Scootaloo felt comfortable near Silver Spoon. The grey mare began to shiver again, the jacket she wore-Scootaloo’s jacket-was all but drenched and provided no warmth. She scooted closer to her new friend in hopes that she could be warmed by the residual heat from her body. Scootaloo jumped a bit as their pelts touched. Initially it was chilly but both of their respective body heats began to melt into one. Silver let her head rest on Scootaloo’s shoulder as she withdrew a sigh of contentment. Feeling now that all the awkwardness between them had subsided, Scootaloo drew a wing around Silver’s back and pulled her in closer as she rested her chin atop the other mares head. Her mane smelled of lavender and vanilla; a lovely smell even when sopping wet. Scootaloo soaked in all that she could without making it noticeable. She imagined she could just drown in the scent of Silver’s mane. Something about this moment just felt right to both of them. Unfortunately, Silver Spoon got curious enough to break the peaceful quiet.
“I have a question to ask.”
“And that question would be…?”
“Earlier you brought up something about whether or not I liked Diamond Tiara as more than a friend.”
“That would be correct.” Scootaloo knew exactly where Silver Spoon was going with this.
“Why did you want to know?” Scootaloo felt a knot in her stomach that lurched into her throat. She was hoping that she wouldn’t have to say this just yet.
“Well, it was really a security blanket if anything.” Scootaloo sheepishly answered.
“A security blanket for what exactly?” Silver kept prying.
“I w…wanted to ensure that you weren’t p…pursuing anyone,” Scootaloo became dizzy as her cheeks burned red. She looked down at Silver who still had her head perched on the shoulder of Scootaloo. Silver Spoon was looking up, directly at her. She could feel Silver’s eyes boring a hole into her soul. “Because there’s something I’ve wanted to tell you for a while.”
“Well spit it out already.” There were several seconds of uneasiness in the air as Scootaloo contemplated her next words; very choice words.
“I love you Silver Spoon.” The mare of Scootaloo’s affections head shot up from its resting position as her jaw was left agape in surprise. Scootaloo felt emptiness from her shoulder and it was unbearable. Fortunately she stayed pressed up against her body. “I’ve kind of always felt this way. Ever since the day we first met but I was too nervous to ever mention it because I wasn’t sure how you’d react.” Silver Spoon took several moments to compose herself before forming a response.
“Quite frankly, I’m not entirely sure what to say or feel right now. You, of all ponies would love me; after everything that I put you through?”
“To be honest, that just made me want you that much more, and now that we’re ‘of age’ I can’t seem to get you out of my head.”
“As flattering as all this is, I am going to have to decline any advances.”
“I figured you would.”
“Please don’t take it the wrong way. I still want to be your friend but I just don’t swing that way. You understand, right?”
“Completely.” Scootaloo had to accept the fact that not everypony had the same ‘orientation’ that she did, as difficult as that might be.
“Please don’t be upset with me.” Silver Spoon pleaded.
“I’m not upset; I have no reason to be. You have your preferences and I have mine. Unfortunately on my behalf they don’t coincide but nonetheless it changes nothing about our friendship.”
“Right, absolutely nothing.” Silver slowly lowered her head back to its resting position atop Scootaloo’s shoulder.
Like many other times during the evening, there was a silence lingering in the air for several minutes before Silver Spoon asked yet another question.
“I don’t mean to pry and you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but what exactly happened to your parents?”
“Eh, that’s a touchy subject but since Sweetie Belle and Applebloom already know, I think it’s only appropriate that my other best friend know. Five years ago on January 21, some punks busted into our home with intent to steal everything of value. My father heard the commotion and ran downstairs. They then put six rounds into his chest. Shortly after, I heard my bedroom door open. I was afraid for my life and I thought surely they’d do away with a young little filly like me. I was relieved to find that it was only my mother who strictly instructed me to hide in my closet. She kissed me on the top of my head and she told me don’t be afraid. She went to call the police but never quite made it. She suffered the same fate as my father did. To this day I still don’t know who killed my parents or where they could possibly be. The case was dropped cold after only a month. I was pissed beyond belief whenever they told me they tried everything they could. Bullshit they did.” Scootaloo was getting very emotional. Silver took immediate notice and threw her arms around her friend to comfort her. Scootaloo continued to weep into Silver Spoon’s neck. She slowly stroked the back of Scootaloo’s mane in an attempt to calm her down.
“I am truly sorry to hear such a tragedy go unpunished. I know the feeling as well. My mother was killed when I was just a young filly.” Scootaloo finally managed to compose herself
“Really?”
“Yes, the memories are still burned into my mind and I have nightmares about it constantly.”
“What happened?”
“Well I was in my treehouse in my backyard at the time-yes I had a treehouse-and an unexpected storm much heavier than this came by. My mother came out to get me. When she did, a bolt of lightning struck the base of the tree causing it to snap. The tree toppled over and crushed my mother. She died instantly. I somehow managed to walk away unscathed physically, but mentally I would never be the same. In the end I feel ultimately responsible for what happened. Had I not been out there at the time, she would still be here with me.”
“Don’t burden yourself Silvy, there’s no way to predict fate. Things like that just happen and you have to adapt to them, that’s what I did.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Now was one of those times where she could honestly care less if her escort never came. She was content to being comforted by her friend for the next few hours. Now was also one of those times where she regretted not being a friend to Scootaloo when they first met. She was definitely a smart mare, and her rustic exterior emanated a certain essence of natural beauty. It was almost captivating. In that moment, something clicked inside of Silver Spoon’s head. She couldn’t believe what she was about to do.
“Hey Scootaloo, can you promise that this stays between the two of us; everything that’s been said and done here?” Silver Spoon asked reluctantly.
“Absolutely.”
“I mean everything Scootaloo. Even what I’m about to do.”
“What are you about to do…?” Scootaloo was cut off as Silver leaned in and planted her warm lips against the pegasus’. Her eyes widened with shock then became lidded with immense pleasure. The mare of her wildest fantasies was actually kissing her! She was too enamored within the kiss to think of any rationalized reason to be doing it. She didn’t care though; she wanted this moment to last for eternity. The moment however, was short-lived as the mares separated, they both gasped for air as if they’d been submerged for several minutes. Crimson tinted both of their cheeks as the blood rushed through their bodies.
“B…but I thought you didn’t like mares in that way?”
“I don’t know what came over me. It just felt like the right thing to do at the time.”
“Well, do you want to do it again?” Scootaloo asked with feign reluctance.
“Be my guest.” Scootaloo needed no further confirmation as she leapt forward pressing her muzzle against Silver’s with much vigor. Silver was not expecting such a strong approach and fell backwards onto her back. The pegasus invading her mouth didn’t hesitate to pounce on her vulnerable prey. The two continued their lust-driven session as Scootaloo dabbed her tongue against Silver’s lips, pleading for entry. The silver mare obliged and parted her lips allowing Scootaloo to fully explore. Despite the cold rain, Silver’s lips were soft and warm, Scootaloo had always imagined what they felt like and she wasn’t disappointed. Silver grew enough confidence to push back with her own tongue attempting to make this an even match. Their tongue-wrestling match lasted for a few more minutes before both mares nearly collapsed from lack of oxygen. They spent the next minute or so in each others embrace as they hungrily sucked in as much air as their lungs would allow. The moment seemed like ecstasy to them both, but where did that leave them?
“Well that sure was something.” Silver remarked when she caught her breath finally.
Scootaloo could only nod; her head still reeling. They remained silent for the next few minutes in order to fully collect themselves.
“So… now what?” Scootaloo asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Well you can’t just kiss and forget. Does this mean that we’re together now?
“That all depends, do you want to be?”
“More than you could believe.”
“Well I think that settles it then.”
“W…wait you’re serious about this?”
“More than you could believe.” Silver smirked playfully at her new fillyfriend.
Scootaloo launched herself at her mare and both of them toppled over in joy. Scootaloo wrapped her arms around Silver’s waist as she planted tiny kisses all along her neck, face, and snout. Scootaloo couldn’t have been happier than she was at this moment. She squeezed Silver even tighter as she buried her muzzle into her neck.
“Scoot, you’re kinda hurting me.” Silver squirmed.
Scootaloo released her vice grip as she blushed and scratched the back of her neck.
“Heh, sorry bout that.”
“No problem.” Silver cuddled against the pegasus with much less intensity.
“You know we should probably get out of here soon.” Scootaloo suggested.
“And how do you suppose we do that with all this rain?”
“A little bit of rain never hurt anypony. I say we just make a run for it.”
“To where exactly?”
“Your place of course. Come on lets go!” Scootaloo grabbed Silver Spoon’s hoof as she ran directly into the torrential downpour. Both mares ran and ran and ran. They didn’t look back; literally and metaphorically. They left their past behind them as they began a new chapter in their lives together. They learned a very valuable lesson today. They learned that it’s not about waiting for the storm to pass; rather it’s about learning to dance in the rain.
