Ritmo "Ritz" Pora has a passion for music. Ever since he first played a toy piano when he was small, he always has made music his hobby, his goal in life. That was his calling, as his quarter note cutie mark would testify. But there is one problem. A problem that could be the downfall of his dream.

His father, Escrito Pluma (to which he would always ask to just be called Quills) fares no better. Staunchly standing to a decision that's left him in heartbreak, the stallion has tried his best to raise his son, even with the inconvenient problem that led to his sadness to begin with. But he always has a smile for young Ritz, helping him to follow his dreams. As a comedy writer for a popular reader's digest, he is also rather eccentric, to the point of embarrassment for Ritz.

Moving to Ponyville granted a new perspective at life for these two. But, as they are quick to discover, something strange about the town is that there is never a dull moment in quaint little Ponyville.
