Ponies often ask me "Hey Vinyl, why do you always have those glasses on?". I always play it off as just being "My thing", but some ponies are a little more persistent. "Come on, I've always wondered what colors your eyes are" or "You know it's rude to wear those indoors". i usually end up having to excuse myself, because they honestly DON'T want to know the reason I always wear them. They really don't.
My name is Vinyl Scratch, and I guess I'm writing this to finally put all of the questions to rest. This is NOT going to be a happy little story. This is NOT going to be a funny little anecdote about one of my tours.
This is going to be the truth.
I was 8 years old. My mom and dad had always encouraged my love of music, even when all I was doing was banging pots and pans together. I had grown up on a special kind of music. A loud, chaotic, beautiful kind of music. Music heavy on Bass and Electronic sounds that could jolt an entire crowd and liven up even the most boring party. Today was the day I would finally get a chance to MAKE this wonderful music. Today was the Canterlot Music Festival! My FIRST Canterlot Music Festival. My parents had promised to buy me a small beginners turntable! I was more excited then I had EVER been!
We arrived at the festival bright and early! I had woken up my parents at sunrise. You'd never see a happier filly! The crowd was INSANE. I had never seen so many Ponies in one place before. It was time for the opening ceremonies.
The ceremony was fantastic! A pair of regal looking ponies, who i Would later discover were married, played a beautiful classical arrangement. A couple of rockers named "The Wild Stallions" shook the entire stage with insane guitar riffs and drum solos! I was having a lot of fun, but I was waiting for a certain pony.
About 20 minutes into the ceremony a light blue Stallion walked onto the stage. Lightning Turner, my favorite musician! His crew dragged a ton of crazy looking equipmenton to the stage. I knew exactly what was coming. The moment he put on those huge purple glasses the entire world melted away. I was in a pure state of euphoria. The beats and the bass and the scratching of the records and holy crap I was in heaven. I jumped into the crowd and just jammed out.
About 5 minute later I noticed that I didn't recognize any of the Ponies standing around me. Looks like I went a little far with the rockin out. This would be the biggest mistake of my life.
I tried to stay calm. I was in Canterlot, the safest place in Equestria. I just needed to find a guard or something. "I'm going to be fine" I kept telling myself. I just knew everything would be fine. Everything HAD to be fine, right?
I wandered around for just a little while, looking for anyone who could possibly help me. That's when I saw him. He was tall and lanky and had a dirty gray coat of fur. His eyes bloodshot. He had huge dark bags under his eyes, and he wore a long white coat. I was a little creeped out at first, but then I noticed his Cutie Mark. It was a scalpel! I figured he must be a doctor or something. I ran to him. "Excuse me Mr.Doctor, I'm lost, do you think you could help me?" I asked.
The pony grinned with a huge set of yellow and gray teeth. "Of course I can, I'll take you back to my medical stall and we'll get you sorted out".
I never forgot those words. I certainly never forgot that smile. Being a lost scared kid, of course I followed him.
I followed the "Doctor". We just kept walking. Walking and walking. Finally we stopped. We were a fair walk away from the festival. We were in front of a small white tent. Oh man why did I follow him?
As we entered I was immediately struck with a feeling of dread. A long white table was in front of me. ONLY a long white table. NO other doctors or nurses. I started to feel myself tear up. I just wanted to go home. The last thing I remember was a cloth on my face.
When I woke up I was completely unable to move. I was staring straight up at a white ceiling. All I could hear was the sound of hoofsteps. I tried to turn my head, but I was completely strapped down. He walked over to me, slowly, and with a hellish purpose to his steps. He looked at me with that same smile. That same awful smile. He brought his hoof to my face. I closed my eyes tight. To my surprise and confusion he began to softly stroke my eyelids. A moment later I felt the first sting.
We must have been in a pretty secluded part of the city, because no one heard, or at least no one cared to investigate, my terrible screaming. The pony slowly cut around my eyelids with a razor sharp silver scalpel. He never stopped smiling.....he NEVER stopped smiling. I tried to close my eyes, but he made that impossible. He had fully removed my right eyelid. At this point I had stopped screaming. I was drained. I knew I was about to die, but all I could do was watch. No crying. No screaming. All I could do was let the "Doctor" finish his procedure. I should have, but I didn't expect what happened next.
I gasped as the scalpel was shoved between my eye and the bloody cuts that once held my eyelids. My right eye quickly went dark. The Pony held up his prize. It's a really surreal experience to look at your right eye with your left.
You know, it's strange what you think about when you're in a hopeless situation. Here I was, under the knife of a maniac, and all I could think about was how hard it was going to be to play my music if I was blind. Heh, funny how our minds work sometimes.
He put my eye in some kind of liquid in a jar. He approached me with the scalpel again. This time I went into full panic mode. I don't remember anything after that. I think I blacked out.
I don't know how long a was asleep. All I know is that he didn't want to kill me. I was shaken awake by a pair of hooves. Apparently he had packed up his tent and left me on the ground next to some garbage cans. I would later find out that he had dumped me near the main stage at the festival, and those hooves belonged to that beautiful mare who had been playing the classical music at the opening ceremonies. They took me to the REAL medical team at the festival, and they stayed with me until my parents were finally found.
I was taken to a hospital. I don't remember how long I stayed, but it felt like an agonizingly long time. That family of musicians, the Melody family, kept in contact with my family the entire time. Turns out they had a filly around the same age as me. Heh, I guess good things can come out of tragedies. Thanks to that monster I met my best friend Octavia.
On my last day in the hospital, Octavia came to visit me. Her parents had pulled a few strings and had gotten me an awesome gift. They had played with Lightning Turner a few times before. They told him what happened to me, and he sent me his signature sunglasses!
I'm not going to give ya my whole life story here. I just thought it was time I cleared the air on the whole Glasses thing.
And to anypony who still wants to know what color my eyes are.....
I can't remember. Ask the Pony who has them.
