One Delicious Slice of Cake
In a town filled with sweet-toothed ponies, the work of Cup Cake and Carrot Cake, the married bakers of Sugarcube Corner, was seemingly never complete. Each day brought with it a new round of customers and special orders, and the potpourri of confections and sweet treats cooking in their ovens and filling their display cases was a constant presence in their nostrils as they served the citizens of Ponyville their fill of baked goods. The addition of Pinkie Pie to their household and payroll had been a welcome relief, for as sporadic as the pink pony could be, she had proved an invaluable assistant in the kitchen with her propensity for seeming to be in several places at once. Their small sweet shop had been thrown into chaos again, however, with the arrival of the twin foals Pound and Pumpkin, adding an entirely new layer to their responsibilities. Even with Pinkie's help, operating Sugarcube Corner and watching over their offspring kept the Cakes so busy that they barely had any time to spend together, away from the hubbub of their profession and their children.
This Tuesday, however, was shaping up to be an exception. Carrot Cake slid a fresh tray of muffins into the glass case in front of the counter and looked up, expecting to see several ponies clamoring to partake in the delicious treat (especially one particular pegasus with a penchant for misplaced mail). Instead, there was only the familiar tile and round tables. Despite the lack of business, Carrot cracked a smile. Perhaps there would finally be some peace and quiet for a day.
A shrill cry from the other room, followed by another, quickly shattered any notion of that idea. He sighed, the familiar sound of the twins' active vocal chords drawing him through the swinging door that led to the kitchen area, preparing himself to face whatever had caused the young foals to raise their voices. Dirty diaper? Seems like they were just changed. Maybe it's time for their afternoon feeding? It was anypony's guess. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard high-pitched squeals of laughter, and his face displayed a great deal of confusion as he started to survey the scene in the kitchen.
Pound and Pumpkin were seated on the counter, which had been cleared of any hazardous objects, and were staring with rapt attention toward the door leading to the storeroom. Carrot's expression softened as he recognized the old hide-and-seek game, and with a smile, he focused his attention on the same door, ready for Pinkie to burst through and shout-
“HERE I AM!”
Carrot leaped into the air for two reasons. First, the sheer volume of the sudden shout would be enough to startle anypony, and he was certainly no exception. Second, it had come from an entirely unexpected direction: behind him. As his hooves met the floor again, he quickly spun around, only to come face-to-face with a poofy pink mane attached to a huge, toothy grin. He instinctively took a step back before he sighed and said, “Hello, Pinkie Pie.”
“Hi Mr. Cake!” she shouted. “Did I scare you? Huh?”
“A little,” he responded softly. He heard the sound of giggling behind him and turned his head to see both foals caught up in peals of adorable laughter, Pumpkin waving her legs wildly while Pound lived up to his name, striking the counter top repeatedly with his tiny forehooves. Carrot smiled at the sight.
From behind him, Pinkie spoke up, “I totally didn't mean to scare you, Mr. Cake, and I'm super duper sorry. The twins just love playing with me SO MUCH and I felt like playing hide and seek but I wanted to mix it up a little bit so I hid in a bunch of different places and they loved it! Do you wanna play too?”
“No thanks, Pinkie,” said Carrot. “You three look like you're having enough fun.”
“Okie dokie lokie!” said the party pony, who promptly disappeared. The foals' faces quickly shifted from beaming smiles to wide-eyed confusion; from somewhere in the room, Carrot heard Pinkie's voice drift across the kitchen, “Wheeere's Pinkie Pie?” Not wanting to stick around to find out the answer to the question, Carrot trotted back into the main room of the bakery.
A few seconds later, he heard hooves descending the stairs. He looked up and saw Cup Cake on her way down to the ground floor, her eyes wide with concern. “Sweetie, is everything all right with the twins? I heard a shout.”
Carrot grinned. “They're just fine, honey bun. Pinkie's just playing a little hide and seek...very, very well.”
“Oh good,” Cup said with a sigh of relief. She looked around the room, still devoid of any ponies other than the two proprietors. “My, not very busy today, are we?”
“Not at all,” responded Carrot, trying not to sound too happy. “Why, I'd be surprised if I've seen ten customers in this place all day long.”
“Goodness,” Cup said quietly. “Is that going to set us back at all, dear?”
The lanky stallion shook his head. “Not after last week. Supplying all those goods for the Ponyville Fair put us way ahead, so we can afford one or two slow days like this one. No need to worry, honey.”
Cup smiled at her husband, and his heart skipped a beat as their gazes met. He could stare into those soft rose irises for the rest of his life. They had always captured his attention with their sparkle, a gleam that drew him into the stare of her gorgeous eyes and invited him to stay, enamored by their subtle beauty. His internal reverie was interrupted when she said, “Well, just because we're not busy doesn't mean we're out of things to do!” She trotted over to the supply closet and opened it. “Time to give these tables a good, thorough cleaning!” The front half of her body disappeared into the closet as she rummaged through their supplies.
Carrot found himself entranced by a different sight now: Cup's healthy flanks. As she scoured for the materials needed to give the tables a good wipe-down, her back half stood exposed to the world at large, and her husband drank in the view of her thick, light blue hindquarters swaying back and forth. The amber earth pony bit his lower lip as he stood behind the counter, slowly slipping into hypnosis as he watched his wife. An idea began forming at the back of his mind.
All too soon, Cup emerged from the closet, her hooves clutching a spray bottle with transparent green liquid and a roll of paper towels. Carrot quickly shook his head to clear it, then began looking around the room for something to busy himself with. When nothing caught his eye right away, he found his gaze drifting back toward the figure that was now spraying the cleaning solution onto the empty tabletop. Her back was still to him, and he found his eyes once more drawn to her haunches. She began wiping the table clean with a circular motion, and her backside swayed back and forth. “HERE I AM!”
This time, he only flinched slightly as Pinkie popped out of the kitchen sink, her hooves spread wide and her face beaming with a smile that could fill any heart with warmth. While the logical part of Carrot's brain wanted to question how she had managed to emerge from the sink in the first place, the practical part gently reminded his mental faculties that he was, in fact, dealing with Pinkie Pie. The twins were already beside themselves with laughter again, and Pinkie let out a chuckle and a snort before turning toward the baker stallion. “Hi again Mr. Cake! Did you change your mind about playing with us?”
“No, Pinkie,” Carrot responded, “but I do have a favor I'd like to ask you.”
Wearing the same huge smile, Pinkie said, “I'd love to help out! What do you need me to do?”
“Well...” he began slowly. After a moment's hesitation, he continued, “It's such a beautiful day today, I think the foals would like to go outside for a while, don't you?”
“That's a GREAT idea, Mr. Cake! Can we go right now? Can we can we can we?” A pair of light blue eyes blinked expectantly at Carrot.
“Actually, Pinkie, I have a few things I need to finish here at Sugarcube Corner. Would you mind taking Pound and Pumpkin yourself?”
Even though it didn't seem possible, Pinkie's smile grew wider. “I would LOVE to!” Her face suddenly twisted into a concerned look. “Are you sure you're okay with me watching them?”
“Absolutely, Pinkie. You've proven that you can be very responsible, and we trust you with our little dumplings. Just make sure that when you go out, you take some things with you, just to be safe.”
The smile returned in full force. “Not to worry, Mr. Cake!” The pink pony bounded out of the sink and across the room in one fluid motion, landing next to the door to the outside. She reached behind a nearby cabinet and extracted a small white saddlebag with a clasp that matched her cutie mark. “I always keep a spare travel bag for the foals handy, in case I have to travel anywhere with them.” She threw the container open and began to sift through the contents. “Let's see...diapers, extra formula, towels, wipes, rubber chicken, backup rubber chicken, and one dozen triple chocolate chunk cookies with chocolate icing and sprinkles...check! Looks like we're ready to go!” She quickly scooped up the twins and deposited them on her back, the foals giggling the entire time. “We'll be back real soon, Mr. Cake!” said Pinkie as she opened the back door.
Before she departed, Carrot interjected, “No need to rush, Pinkie. Spend as much time as you want with the little ones. Just be back before sundown, all right?”
“Okie dokie lokie!” Pinkie gave a quick salute and hopped out the door, Pound and Pumpkin clinging to her curly mane as she bounced away into the bright sunshine. Carrot smiled and shook his head at his assistant's antics, then gave a quick nod. The first part of his idea had been a rousing success; now, it was time to move on to phase two.
When he returned to the main room, Cup had moved to a table closer to the sales counter, and she looked up and smiled at Carrot as he passed through the doorway. She was facing his direction now, but he felt no disappointment; the view from the front was just as stunning as it was from the rear. He smiled back and stood behind the counter, watching his wife's eyes narrow as she concentrated on a troublesome stain. In a slightly lower-pitched voice than his usual tone, he said, “Have I told you lately that you're beautiful?”
Her eyes widened quickly, then shifted their gaze away as she shied away a little. Her cheeks reddened with a slight blush, and the corners of her mouth turned up. She turned her eyes back to Cake and said, “Oh, Carrot, you're such a sweet talker.”
He raised his head out of his hooves and straightened his neck. “It's not just talk, Cup. You really are...” He sighed loudly and smiled wide as he scanned his wife's form. “Beautiful.”

With a nudge of her hoof into his chest, she whispered, “Naughty boy.” She withdrew her hoof from around Carrot and trotted to the stairs, giving him a sly wink as she began to climb the steps. He quickly ran to the door and turned the “Open” sign around to “Closed,” then made his way to the staircase and followed close behind Cup, her curvy rump swaying back and forth only feet in front of him.
