Alicorn cancer is terrible. After the war with the draconequus kind, alicorn cancer was rampaging through the land, killing of the alicorns that had survived the war. Astro, Luna and Celestia's father, found a cure to it, on the moon. He retrieved it, but by then, it was too late.
Only having time to give the cure to Celestia before he died, he told her to take her sister and travel far away, away from the sickness, to stay alive. Luna was heart broken when they went, feeling it was her fault, that they had to go.
The found equestria, and settled there. Then, well, you know the rest...
