Once a millennia, a great battle is held in the world of Equestria to determine who should be granted the ultimate power. A hundred creatures in the world of Equestria—ponies, gryphons, minotaurs and changelings alike—are selected from the current generation to engage in combat and see who is best suited to obtain victory.

Shortly after the events of Discord's second reign, a creature unseen to Equestria appears, much to Celestia's and Luna's great dismay. They must learn to once again tolerate this nuisance, should they wish to survive the battle and heal previously inflicted wounds.
