Chapters "Beta where the hell are you," screamed Ari in my earpiece as I continued to follow the Flock as they flew through the skies north.
Growling back into the earpiece I say, "unlike you pup I am doing my job. Just follow my signal and you'll have the Flock soon," I said while thinking to myself, 'that's to say if there is anything left of them after I get through with them.'
Smiling to myself at the thought I hear the mutt growl out on the other end of the comm's, "fine. But remember that Max is MINE! No one kill's her but me understand!?"
"Loud and clear dogbreath," was my curt reply before I turned off my earpiece.
As I followed the Flock I couldn't help but think back to what had led up to this point in my life.
I was grown from a fetus like all of the other Eraser's and injected with wolf dna to make me a hybrid. But they did something different with me. Instead of just adding wolf dna they decided to throw in a little avian dna as well. Later I would find out that they had tried this on many other experiments but I was the only one to survive.
From then I grew very quickly. By six months I was already physically the age and mentality of a toddler. Within under a year I was a teenager being taught how to shift from my normal human appearance to my full out eraser form. I was taught to use my wings to fly as well.
They would let a random animal loose and have me hunt it down and kill it with my bare hands to get accustomed to death and the thought of killing. For a while this worked and I was nothing more than the companies little killing machine. Then she came. The one being that I actually didn't want to hurt. Her name was Jesse Queens and she was a biologist working for Itex. The very same company that created me and owned half of the world.
She became a surrogate mother to me. She taught me things other than killing, she taught me survival and everything school related. I knew she wasn't supposed to do this but I didn't care, I was just happy to have someone that saw me as more than some mindless beast.
It was because of her that I gained an interest in the medical field. Especially the part of using natural remedies to treat injuries. She said I was a natural at it and I took great pride in that. In no time at all I could safely say that I was one of the leading medical professionals in the world! And I owed it all to her. The one I had taken to calling mother because it just felt so right.
So it was understandable how distraught I was when I found out she had died in a car accident. I didn't talk or eat for days, instead I threw myself into my training just to try and forget about the most important person in my life.
I went through numerous test that were supposed to improve my already superhuman abilities. With them I gained many nifty enhancements all meant to aid me in the greatest mission the erasers as a whole had ever received. The elimination of the Flock.
Jeb Batchelder was the lead scientist on these six experiments and was our source of Intel on them. Unlike the other erasers though I actually took the time to study their files so when I faced any of them I would be prepared. These experiments were put out into the world as a test to see how well they could survive in society. Maximum Ride or Max as she liked to be called, was created with the sole purpose of changing the world. She was given numerous tests of real life scenarios to see if she was up to the task. Sadly for her and her little group she was deemed unfit for the job and so was scheduled for immediate extermination. Jeb tried to prolong it as long as possible with misdirection's and last minute saves, but he was only delaying the inevitable.
My prior planning skill isn't the only difference between me and the other erasers though. For one I was definitely shorter then them by a good margin and a lot lighter to due to my avian dna making my bones hollow so I could fly easier. When in human form they stood a solid six five while I was six one. They were also a lot more quick to get violent than I was.
Basically I was the runt of the litter and they let me know it everyday. But even though they had size and strength over me I was still the better fighter and could easily best any of them. Even Jeb's son Ari, who was made an eraser when he was seven years old, was no match for me. It sucked that he technically outranked me.
I knew the only way to get out of my current position was to take out the Flock and be promoted. This lead me to where I was now. After that pup Ari attacked the Flock and failed again I decided to follow them and wait for the opportune moment to strike. I would be the one to end the infamous Maximum Ride and no steroid enhanced brat was going to stop me.
All day they flew North until they finally stopped at an abandoned cabin by some beach in upstate New York. After memorizing their location I go to get set up for the night ahead that would lead to the Flocks death and my ticket to the good life.
I booked in to a cheap hotel and quickly went to my room. As soon as I entered I tossed my bag onto the moderately sized bed and make my way to the shower since I needed to relieve my sore muscles. The hardest part about washing myself was the wings since they were extremely sensitive and needed to be cleaned thoroughly for proper flight. After washing up I step out of the shower and head to the bathroom mirror where I couldn't help but stare at myself.
Like all of the other Erasers I had sharp features making me look like some movie star, my light tan skin probably came from the donor for my egg and did well to show off my defined musculature that all erasers are natural born with. My hair was a midnight black with crimson streaks that I died in since I wanted to stand out from the others. My hair had a wild and spiky style to it and reached to in-between my shoulder blades where I usually kept it in a tight ponytail. My eyes were my most outstanding feature though. They were a stormy grey and always had the look of a predator as if waiting for you to slip up so I can go in for the kill.
After examining myself I head back into the room and open up my bag where I pull out a pair of black and grey army fatigues. They come with a pair of black and grey camo pants. black undershirt with a grey vest over top, and to complete the look was a pair of steel-toe boots.
When my attire was on I looked through my bag some more to see what my arsenal consisted of. I currently had, four smoke grenades, three frags, and five sleep darts for a hand held dart gun. It wasn't much to go with but I would make due. It was still somewhat Light out so I decided to read up on my targets once more and pulled out their files.
Night came quickly and with it I set off to end the Flock once and for all. Arriving at there current hideout I made sure to put up a mental barrier since the youngest of the group, the one they call Angel was a little mind reader and has been known to influence certain individuals. My mind barrier would prevent both giving me the advantage.
Landing near one of the windows I stealthily take a peak inside to see only five of the Flock in there. Just my luck that Max seemed to have gone on a little flight. No matter she would come back eventually and when she did I would be ready.
Deciding to even the odds a bit in my favor I sneak over to the back door and easily pick the lock and quietly make my way inside to find all of them asleep. Looking at their faces I easily recognized all of them. In order from oldest to youngest, Fang the ever stoic second in command, Iggy the blind one, Nudge the little chatter box, Gazzy the pyro maniac, and Angel the mind reader. Shame they would have to die so young but then again what do I care. They are but a means to an end.
Checking to make sure the clip of sleep darts was loaded into the dart gun I plant one in each of them without anyone waking up and they wouldn't be waking up for another twelve hours.
Just then my heightened hearing picked up the tell tale signs of wing beats and I allowed a grin to split my face as I rushed outside to see non other than Maximum Ride herself. Before she noticed me I had already taken flight, my raven black wings spread wide at an intimidating seventeen feet.
She had no time to react before I collided into her sending us both reeling through the sky. When we finally righted ourselves we shared a glance. Her's was of anger and hatred while mine was of predatory bloodlust. Not taking any chances I start to change my form to my full on eraser form. My muscles bulged to the point that if it wasn't for the elastic material of my clothes they would have ripped.
Black fur sprouted from my skin until it completely covered me, a muzzle pronounced itself on my face and was filled with razor sharp teeth. Claws sprouted from my finger tips until they were six inches long and sharper than knives. The final touch was the wolf ears that jutted from the top of my skull. I was now basically the perfect vision of what a werewolf would look like if they existed.
Giving a howl just for added effect me and Max class in a flurry of blows. Both of us matched never giving an inch. For every strike I made on her she gave one right back. So caught up in our fight neither of us noticed the winds begin to pick up and the water below us start to churn into a whirlpool.
After finishing our final clash we separate to catch our breathe. It was then I noticed the weather shift around us and muttered under my breath, "what in the hell is going on?"
Max took my momentary distraction to attack. I was so unprepared for her kick that I stopped flying. This made me fall towards the violently churning whirlpool below me. I was too late to realize my predicament and quickly found myself in the freezing ocean waters. I tried with everything I had to get out of the whirlpool as it steadily dragged me down but it was no use.
As Max watched me sink to my doom I thrust a claw at her and yell out defiantly, "DON'T THINK THIS IS OVER MAXIMUM! I WILL COME BACK AND WHEN I DO I WILL HAVE YOUR HEAD!"
Those were my last words before I was dragged beneath the water and my vision turned black as I lost consciousness.
As I laid there in the darkness all I could feel was anger. No anger wasn't strong enough. What I was feeling was unimaginable hate for that damned experiment Maximum Ride.
But along with that hate was also self loathing. How could I have been so easily distracted? It was because of my own stupidity that I was now most likely dead and on my way to wherever it is that mutants souls go.
Just as I was ready to accept my imminent death I heard a voice calling out to me. It was female and had sort of an accent. Strangely enough it was also rhyming.
"You must wake now strange beast, for me to help you must open your eyes at least." (sorry if my rhyming sucks)
Help? Who would want to help a stranger? I was skeptical at first but if this woman was really willing to help me than who was I to deny her help?
So mustering up as much courage as possible I slowly manage to open my eyes. What met my eyes left me speechless. Standing over me was some type of zebra wearing gold neck rings and gold earrings. It's teal colored eyes were abnormally large and spoke of wisdom beyond the years. We stared deadlocked both of our eyes showing unbidden curiosity.
Then the real shocker came to me when the zebra actually spoke in the same voice I had heard before!
"I must say you are a strange creature indeed. It is a good thing I found you in your time of need."
It took me a minute to get over my shock before I could speak again.
"Ok. First of all, can you stop the rhyming. Its cute and all but it may get on my nerves after a while. Second, where in the holy hell am I?"
The next few hours went by quickly as me and the zebra who I now knew as Zecora, talked about this new world I was in and it's inhabitants. I was skeptical on most of the stuff she was saying but waited until I saw it for myself before judging. The real interest came though when I learned of her profession as a potion maker and herbologist. When I told her of my talent's in the same field's she was ecstatic to finally have someone around who understood her profession as well as she did.
I was beginning to trust this interesting zebra the more we talked but it was still a long ways away before I actually trusted her with any of my secret's. When I told her as much she completely understood which earned her some serious brownie points in my book.
"So Z what happens now? If what you said about this forest is true then I can't live in it. And if I head towards that town you were talking about I would more likely than not cause a panic."
She seemed to ponder this for a minute. I still think its weird to be talking to a creature who back on my world had little to no intelligence but here was actually very intelligent.
Her eyes then brightened as she looked at me and said, "you can come with me into town tomorrow. Once they see you are no threat they should open up to you and stay calm."
"I wouldn't say I'm not a threat. If one of them threatens me in any way I will not hesitate to rip them limb from limb."
She gulped knowing I was not making an idle threat. It also helped that in terms of height most of the natives would only reach to just under my ribcage. So I had intimidation going for me right off the bat.
"Alright Z I'll go with you tomorrow if for nothing else than to scare the living shit out of some locals. Right now I'm seriously hungry so I'm going to go hunting."
She didn't have time to say anything else as I quickly got up and left to go and hunt down some food. It doesn't matter what anyone else says because I am not giving up meat for anyone.
As soon as I got about twenty feet from Zecora's I already had the scent of something. It smelled like a big cat, a lion I would guess. The so called kings of the jungle. Pft, I had killed and eaten tons of these before so why should now be any different?
Following the scent led me to a cave. It was fairly large and the entrance was littered with bones. This didn't bother me in the least bit and only made me more anxious to kill the lion inside it's own den. When I stepped inside though I was thrown for a loop. Instead of a plain old lion like I was expecting instead was a lion roughly three times my size sporting a scorpion tail and bat wings. This would make the boys back at Itex go spastic.
Still the beast saw me and when it did it let out a deafening roar as it charged at me. Not one to be deterred by weird appearances I charged to beast as well while I changed into my pseudo eraser form. In this form I grew bigger and my muscles became bigger and more defined. My hair grew longer and more wild and three inch claws came from my finger tips while my teeth sharpened.
Meeting in the middle the beast tried to bite me in half. I grabbed it's top jaw with my right hand while my left grabbed the bottom. It then became a serious power struggle between the beasts jaws and my arms. I knew I couldn't keep this up forever so changing tactics I performed a cross motion and sent the beast tumbling on it's side. Figuring an easy kill at the moment I went to finish the beast with my claws but was instead speared by it's tail in the gut.
Liquid fire flooded through my veins from the beasts venom as I roared in pain. Using my strength though I rip the things singer out of my gut and snap off its tip. During this I had gone full out eraser and was now glaring at the slightly trembling beast. With a roar of bloodlust and anger I leaped at the mismatched lion. For the next ten minutes nothing but the sounds of breaking bones and splattered blood echoed through the forest along with the cries of an animal in agony.
When I finally arrived at Zecora's hut she nearly feinted when she saw me. I had a hole in my gut and was covered head to toe in bits of blood and meat. She forced me to take a dip in a nearby pond which I did so without question. I was too tired to argue anyway. After that and washing my clothes just to wear them again she patched up my wound while I laid on her bed and filled her in on what had happened.
"How did you survive a manticores sting Brad? You should have died from the poison," she said worriedly to which I just scoffed at.
"Beats the hell out of me Z. It may have been because of my rush of adrenaline it may have overpowered the poison and steadily pushed it out. All I do know is that I am tired and am going to sleep. Goodnight."
With that I passed out in exhaustion from todays events. Waking up in a new fantasy world and fighting a mythical creature does that to you.
Next Morning
I steadily awoke to the bright sun shinning into my eyes from a nearby window the morning after my arrival to this strange new world.
Putting my arm over my eyes to try and block out the suns rays I try to sit up but find the movement restricted. Looking down a see a sleeping Zecora on my chest.
Now I had never been embarrassed before in my life but this was the one situation that made my cheeks go a deep red. I didn't know what to do so I just stayed as still as possible and took the time to look around Zecora's home since I didn't get to yesterday what with my hunger and the talking.
Looking around I saw many tribal masks and shelves filled with bottles of various shapes and sizes. All of them contained some kind of liquid that must have been the potions she had created. Man I got to ask her to teach me how to make potions. It seems like a really good profession to me.
"If your done admiring my home maybe we can get on our way into town."
The surprise comment made me jump a little bit as the now wide awake zebra on my chest giggled. I glared at her as she hopped off and stretched with me following soon after.
Thankfully I while I was sleeping my attire had dried. Now it smelled like the forest we were in. Who knew nature was a great detergent?
Deciding to get some payback for the scare Zecora gave me I decided to tease her a little bit, "so Z mind telling me why you were sleeping on my chest this morning."
I was expecting a blush or at least a slight pause but instead all I got was a sly smile and her saying, "well first off you were sleeping on my bed. And second, you didn't seem to mind when you cuddled with me last night."
"T-that's not true!"
"Is it Brad?"
Now I was stuck. Somehow she had turned the tables on me and she wasn't even trying! Then another thought struck me, why was I acting like tis? I was a stone cold killer for gods sakes! I don't play childish games like this! So then why does it feel so good to do so? Was I losing my touch? No that can't be it! It's just shock is all.
Shaking away the foreign thoughts I wave the comment off and say, "whatever. Look lets get going I want to get this over with."
She nodded in agreement though she looked slightly disappointed at my response. The walk into town was uneventful and really boring. I wanted to fly in there with my wings but Zecora convinced me not to by threatening to turn me into a toad with one of her potions. I didn't know if she really had a potion like that but I wasn't willing to take the chance and opted to just walk beside her in silence.
Just then we heard a shout of, "ZECORA!"
That was heard right before something slammed into my chest with enough force to throw me onto my back and knock the wind out of me as well as giving me pain in my still sore abdomen. My mutant genes gave me excellerated healing so the wound from the manticore was more than likely just a scar now but it still hurt like a bitch! It didn't hurt nearly as much as it pissed me off though. I was about to rip whoever dared to attack me apart before the bitch was dragged off by Zecora and told about my situation.
As Zecora did this I was dusting myself off and trying to keep my anger in check before I killed whoever hit me.
I heard a quick, 'my bad,' before the sound of wings flapping drew my attention to a rainbow maned Pegasus taking off.
Looking at Zecora I ask, "was that one of your friends that you told me about? I guess she is Rainbow Dash?"
Zecora nodded in conformation and I took a last look at the fading rainbow trail before saying out loud to myself, "alright I am calling it right now that she is at least bi. But I wouldn't be surprised if she was really a lesbian."
The zebra chose to ignore my comment as we continued towards the town that was now clearly visible.
It was really awkward walking into town since as soon as I did everything stopped and stared at me and I at them. The staring contest got old real quick and was beginning to annoy me so I opted to shout out, "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ALL LOOKING AT!?"
Quicker than I could blink the street was cleared of all signs of life. Smirking in satisfaction I continue walking with Zecora mumbling something about a stupid stallion or whatever it was. Not like I cared what others thought of me. She eventually began to lead me towards our destination which so happened to be a big ass tree with windows and a door.
Normally I would have called bullshit on this but I'm learning just to deal with it. So taking the initiative I walk up to the much smaller door and open it before walking in.
Zecora quickly ran in after me and said in a scolding tone, "Brad! You do not just walk into a ponies home unannounced!"
"Then maybe they should lock their doors," was my curt reply.
Before anymore could be said I was hit in the head by a purple beam. The strike didn't hurt but I started to feel drowsy and fell on my butt as sleep started to overtake me. Turning to Zecora I manage to get out, "tell whoever did that, that I am going to tear them a new asshole when I wake up."
With my peace said I was quickly thrown back into the dark depths of unconsciousness where I was starting to really hate going against my will. Whatever divine being doing this to me was going to pay, of that I could be sure.
I don't know how long I was out for, but what I did know was that I was pissed! When I woke up heads were going to roll and once I found the fuck that knocked me out not even their fucking families will be able to identify the body!
Turns out that time was now as I felt my body start to wake itself up. Being impatient as I am I force my eyes to open and what met my vision was four grey stone ceiling. I was on some table in the middle of the room. When I tried to get up to get a better look at my surroundings but the tugging on my limbs alerted me that I was strapped down.
"Oh fuck no they didn't," I growled to myself as I shifted to my pseudo eraser form. The size change alone was enough to break the restraints.
Standing from the table I could now get a good look at my surroundings. Four grey stone walls within a twenty square foot room. In front of me was a metal door that would make me have to crouch a little bit if I wanted to get through.
Tuning my ears I could hear shouting outside the door. Probably whoever put me here knew I was awake. Well too bad I wasn't going to wait around for them. I'm a hunter not prey. I go to them not the other way around.
Donning a wolfish smile I go full on eraser and rush the door. My wait plus my strength and momentum easily sent the door flying off it's hinges.
Outside were two golden armored ponies pointing spears at me. They looked ready to piss themselves so I let loose a blood curdling howl and in response they dropped their spears and took off running.
Scoffing at their cowardly actions I make my way out of what I assume is the dungeon. Turns out this places jailhouse was smaller than I had expected it to be. Either they don't have many crimes or the use the death penalty a lot. If I had to guess it was the former. These ponies don't have the balls.
My wanderings eventually lead me to a wooden door. Surprisingly enough it was unlocked. What was on the other side was an even bigger surprise though. Standing in a semi-circle was about thirty guards brandishing spears and swords. Guess that's why those other two ran off, strength in numbers. Pretty smart for a pair of cowards.
One of the guards then spoke up, "stand down beast and we won't harm you."
Really? They wouldn't harm ME? Didn't Zecora tell them all about me yet?
Then what I just thought struck me. Zecora. Where was she? Was she safe? Did she get in trouble for helping me? I had to know!
Glaring at the guards I growl out, "where is Zecora?'
They all looked confused but the one who talked to me before asked, "uhh who?"
Their stupidity was really getting on my nerves, "The zebra that was with me you jackass!"
All of the guards jumped back at my sudden outburst but quickly steadied themselves while the lead guard said, "she is with the princesses. Not that its any of your business. Now go back to your cell before you make us use force."
I knew who the princesses were by name but I didn't trust them. Especially around Zecora without me there. Wait a second why was I stressing over Zecora? Maybe it was because I felt I owed her for helping me. Yeah that must be it.
Looking over the guards I growl out, "either you get out of my way or things are going to get ugly."
Their stances didn't change so shrugging my shoulder's I say, "so be it. You brought this on yourselves."
Before they could ask what I meant I leaped at them with my claws and fangs bared and a roar escaping my lips. They barely put up a fight as I tore through their ranks. Still they managed to get a few hits on me but that only made me angry, and the one thing you do not want to do is piss off an eraser. It's like messing with the incredible Hulk. It's just something you don't do unless you have a death wish.
Within minutes it was all over. Thankfully for the guards I didn't kill any of them. At most some of them had a few gashes and broken bones. They would live though some of them would have a few scar's.
I didn't care about them though as I ran through the white marble halls trying to find the throne room of this place. I figured since they were royalty they would be in the throne room.
Along the way I encountered three more groups of guards but easily dispatched them. I had multiple cuts and bruises but the adrenaline running through me made the pain non-existent. But just as I turned another corner I was struck by a purple blast that sent me into a wall.
Looking at where it came from I saw a purple unicorn with a purple aura around her horn and I realized, this was the one who knocked me out. Rage consumed me as I started to see red and get tunnel vision. This bitch was history!
With a roar I charged at her as she sent multiple spells at me. Empowered by my rage my reflexes skyrocketed as I dodged each blast all the while closing the distance. I saw fear grow on her face and it only made my bloodlust grow. Finally I reached her and wrapped one of my claws around her throat. Lifting her in the air so she could look me in the eyes.
Before I could do anything else though I was hit by another blast of magic, this one white. It had more power than the purple ones blast and sent me flying back a bit further. I still didn't release my grip on the mare though so she went flying with me.
When I got up I held the mare in front of me in case another blast was sent my way. In front of me was a giant white pony with wings and a horn about as tall as me when I am human but only up to my chin as an eraser. On her flank was a sun and she wore gold regalia. Next to her was a slightly smaller blue with a moon on her flank and black regalia. one along with a five other who I figured were the Element's of Harmony that Zecora mentioned.
We stared each-other down for a second before from behind the group ran out the very zebra I was searching for.
"Brad please let Twilight go!"
"Why should I? This bitch is the reason why I woke up in a dungeon! She struck first not me!"
"It was all a mistake Brad just please let her go."
She was on the verge of tears and it made my heart ache. Damn what the hell is wrong with me!? As I was still contemplating this Zecora had moved up to my side and was nuzzling my free hand. It was this last act that made me calm down enough to release the mare in my grasp.
By release I mean just drop on her flank. She scrabbled back to the group as they gazed at me cautiously.
Zecora grabbed my sleeve and began to lead me to the group while saying, "they just want to talk with you Brad so there is no need to worry."
Sighing to her I still didn't release my eraser form in the case they tried to pull a fast one. Looking down at Zecora I say warningly, "alright Z I'll go along with this for now but at the first sign of trouble shit's going to hit the fan. Agreed?"
She nodded in agreement just as we reached the others. We stared at each-other awkwardly for a moment before I decided to break the silence, "soooo what now sunbutt."
My little nickname made her cheeks flame up in what I assumed was anger and made me involuntarily grin. Oh yeah messing with royalty is awesome.
With a huff the recently named sunnbutt teleported us to what looked like the throne room. Took me long enough to get here.
"Well first you are going to answer some questions. And my name is not 'sunbutt' it's Celestia. Princess Celestia."
"I know what your name is. I just didn't want to say it. In fact I know everyone here's names thanks to Zecora. And as for the questions I'll answer what I think you need to know nothing else."
She didn't seem too pleased with that but what do I care? Her little pet put me into a coma so I have very little respect for her or her little posse.
"First off what are you?"
"I'm a mutant. That means I'm a mixture of different samples of DNA. Mine is made up of human, wolf, and avian. If I wasn't a mutant I would be a hundred percent human but that's what you get when your made by mad scientist."
They looked shocked at this and.. sad? Why would they care how I was made its not like its their problem I was made to be a killing machine.
"How could your kind do that to another," asked the blue pony, Luna I think, sadly.
I shrugged nonchalantly and answered in a non caring tone, "they say it's to help the human race evolve. But in my opinion I think they are just a bunch of egotistical fucks with a shit ton of money and influence trying to play god. I couldn't say that out right to them before but now that I'm here it doesn't really matter."
"Wait you said you had avian dna as well. What did you get from that," asked the purple pest known as Twilight. Yeah I still haven't forgiven her and probably won't for a long time.
"Well barney what I got were these bad boys. And yes they do really work."
I then spread my impressive wingspan out for all to see thankful that my outfit had slits in the back for just such an occasion.
They were all silent for a while mulling over what I had told them and the sight of my wings while I was thinking on when I should go hunting next and what I should hunt for. I wonder if there's any birds I could use to make some fried chicken.
"Ok moving on, what do you eat."
Speak of the devil, "well humans are omnivores by nature but with my mixed dna I am more prone to meat than most. And before you all flip shit I will not eat ponies. Just the other day I hunted and ate a manticore. I only hunt other predators so don't worry yourselves."
That seemed to calm them all down a bit save for the shy one called Fluttershy. I think she actually wet herself.
"Now for my final question. Do you plan on harming my subjects."
This last question was spoken with a suspicious gaze and a slight tone of warning.
I returned her gaze with a glare of my own and said in a challenging tone, "only if hey plan to harm me. Even though I was designed to be a killer that doesn't make me a murderer.
