Follow the Sun
This is the story of the fall of the Empire of Alicai and the founding of the Kingdom of Equestria in the once-distant Realm of Everfree, following Princess Platinum of Alicai, Apprentice Clover, Archmage Starswirl, Supreme Commander Hurricane, Centurion Cloudbreaker (“Pansy”), “Chancellor” Puddinghead, and Royal Engineer Smart Cookie through the events which would bring an era to a fiery end and birth the modern age.
The discovery of an ancient artifact with the powers of the Alicorn threatens the tenuous stability of an empire built upon the ashes of the Empire of Equestria, the fall of which remains long forgotten except in mythology, and the god-like Alicorn leaders of which remain little more than lore. As strange weather blanketing the land inflames tensions between the Pegasi Federation and the Empire of Alicai, long-simmering resentment among the Earth Ponies threatens to push the world to the brink of destruction. With the lessons of the past still unlearned, the events of those lost days again threaten to wipe civilization from time.
There is, as of yet, no actual gore, but will be in later chapters when the obvious war breaks out (chapter 7 or 8). I am still debating if there will be any sex, but it's a good possibility; don't be disappointed if there is none, since if there is, it's just a part of the story.
Overall, I'd say this falls into the "Dark Romantic" genre typified by writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne and H. P. Lovecraft, with a good base of pure Romanticism which wouldn't be out of place in Les Misérables. Lots of death, but for a good cause.
