Just One of Those Days
A Bittersweet Day
Load Full StoryIt was a cold and windy evening at the site of Ponyville's school house. A bell was ringing its fast pitch repetitively, signifying that the school day had come to its end. A bunch of young fillies and colts charged through the doors of the school and raced into the outside world with gleefulness in their eyes and happiness glowing in their faces. One particular colt was with them as well, but had a look of disappointment in his eyes. He had a job here at this school as the editor of the newspaper, and he had come to appreciate the role he took at this school. Though the school day was over now, and it wouldn't be until tomorrow when he would be able to return back to his position.
So, with a flap of his wings, and a push of his back hooves, he began to hover right off the ground, and soon after he began flying up toward the sky in the direction of his house.
"Hey, Featherweight! Where are you going?" A voice from the ground below him spoke.
Featherweight turned his body back toward the school and looked down to see Snips and Snails stare right back at him with curiosity in their eyes.
"Going home I guess?" Snips said.
Featherweight nodded his head slowly up and down and picked right back up on his journey back to home.
"Well, we'll be seeing you later, I guess." Snips shouted as he watched Featherweight fly off.
Featherweight smiled as he heard those words. He would be coming back here later. Featherweight looked down at the town of Ponyville below him. It felt nice having friends in a place like this. He could just imagine this place in a few hours. All of his friends tucked away in their beds, knowing that they are safe in the safety of their family.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind shot itself at Featherweight, causing him to tumble in midair. He quickly recovered himself, and looked down to see how far he dropped. A green cabin had seemed to have shown itself to Featherweight. He had finally reached home.
Featherweight landed with a small thud on the dirt ground as he approached his cabin. The cabin was old and rundown, with an old guitar lying beside the front door, but to featherweight, it was more than just an old guitar.
Suddenly, a small mare with a brown mane opened the front door to the house and gazed at Featherweight in surprise.
"Well, well, well. Look who decided to show up! Come on in, Featherweight!" The mare spoke.
Featherweight nodded in acceptance and trotted calmly inside his house.
"Featherweight, you might want to sit down. We have something to discuss." The mare whispered softly as she closed the door behind her.
Featherweight stared at the mare in confusion, but obliged and sat down at the round table in his kitchen.
"Do you remember what happened last night?" The mare questioned as she sat down.
Featherweight stood in shock at hearing those words. Of course he had remembered what happened last night. It was as if she was asking him if he forgot how to breath.
Featherweight sighed with reluctance and nodded his head slowly up and down.
"You do know that we love each other, right?" The mare said.
Featherweight looked down at the ground, keeping his eyes from the eyes of the mare, though he still nodded in understanding.
"Good, and you know that we…decided to go…our s-separate ways, right?" The mare questioned.
Suddenly, Featherweight banged his hoof on the table in anger and stormed off to the back of the cabin where his room lied.
"Featherweight, listen to me! Come back here!" The mare shouted as she ran after Featherweight.
Featherweight rolled his eyes as he approached his room and slammed the door behind him, causing the mare to give a sigh of exasperation.
"I'm sorry if this has made you mad at me. I know you weren't expecting to come home to this." The mare pleaded.
Featherweight ran to his bed and laid his head down on the pillow, trying his best to block the mare's voice. Small puddles of tears had started to form at the lower lids of his eyes.
"Featherweight! If it makes you feel any better, I still have some of your father's stuff right outside! It's the least I could do as your mom!" The mare cried.
Featherweight slammed his face into his pillow in frustration. He didn't know if he should believe her. If anything, he wasn't sure if she even liked being his mother.
"Look, Featherweight," his mom spoke through the door, "Me and your father broke up because we didn't seem to see eye to eye anymore. I knew that this would make you angry, and please don't be mad at me for all the harsh language I used yesterday evening. I didn't know that you were awake!"
A long silence had followed from Featherweight's room. Featherweight was now staring up at the ceiling in deep thought. This was all happening so fast. It was as if a tub a bricks smashed into him while he wasn't looking.
Featherweight then rose up from his bed and trotted quietly toward the door. He then twisted the doorknob and opened it up to see his mother with guilt in her eyes.
"I'm sorry." She said softly.
Featherweight looked down at the ground in a melancholic fashion and galloped softly over to the main entrance of the cabin. He then opened up the door to the outside world and gazed at the guitar that was lying a few feet away from him. He then picked the guitar up and placed it in front of him.
"He left it there." His mom spoke behind him.
Featherweight jumped a bit in surprise to see his mother. He then quickly calmed himself down and began to pick at the guitar's cords, causing them to sound off a vibrating pitch.
"I'll never understand why he didn't take it with him. Out of all the stuff he had, he had to leave that thing here." Featherweight's mom said in confusion.
Featherweight continued to pick at the cords of the guitar in curiosity, not caring what his mother had just said to him. The pitches sounded soft and lovely, like the pitches of the printing presses he would hear everyday at his job at the school. The guitar reminded him of his friends, and on how they would hang around him, just like a guitar would hang around somepony's neck. It was if Featherweight's father had left it here for him to have a friend at home.
"Featherweight, are you listening to me?" His mother spoke up.
Featherweight looked up from the guitar and stared at the eyes of his mother with sadness in his gaze. He nodded his head up and down to signify a "yes".
"I'm really sorry for all this to happen so quick." Featherweight's mother whispered.
Featherweight looked at his mother and shrugged his shoulders. He really wasn't so sure how to think about it to begin with. If anything, It was if they wanted to split up just so they could start this.
"You know what? I think we should just go and take a nap. It's already been a long and busy day for us all." Featherweight's mother suggested at last.
Featherweight nodded his head in agreement and took the guitar up with him with much delightfulness. Once he got to his room, he closed the door behind him and placed the guitar right beside his side of the bed. He now had a companion to help him sleep as well.
Featherweight smiled with happiness at the realization of making a new friend. So, with an energetic bound, Featherweight hopped into bed and hugged at the guitar. He would not have to worry about waiting for school to come anymore.
"Goodnight, daddy." Featherweight whispered as he kissed the guitar on the neck.
