if forever is this [First Kiss]

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

It hadn’t happened by mistake, but it hadn’t happened on purpose, either. It had just happened, like so much else in their relationship, something not intended but fitting, meant to be in a way so few things were.

It was their third date, the two of them lying atop a picnic mat, sunlight falling over their coats like warm brushstrokes, so soft and cozy they could stay like that forever, comfortable in that hazy limbo between awake and asleep.

Their conversation had drifted off already—some discussion on a recent book Twilight read—and Twilight hadn’t realized how close Rarity’s face was to hers until she felt the unicorn’s warm breath splash over her, tasting of fresh mint and strawberries.

She didn’t open her eyes.

She wanted to, but she didn’t, a little embarrassed, a little nervous, a little in love. They’d only been on three dates, which was next to nothing, but even then, even so early, Twilight often noticed a tug at her heart when she made Rarity laugh, or when Rarity spoke, or in the way she caught Rarity looking at her.

A little tug, so small, but here, a whisper that said, “hey, this is nice. This feels right. A little scary, a little daunting, but right now, right here, this feels good. If forever could be this, that wouldn’t be too bad, would it?”

She felt the splash again, strawberries and mint and hopes and dreams, and she wanted to taste it then and there. Would that be okay? Would it be fine? A little exciting, a little delirious, a little—a lot—scary?

She found out before she even realized she’d moved. If she had moved at all, she wasn’t sure, because she didn’t feel like she had, but somehow there she was, tasting the strawberries and mints, soft lips pressed against hers.

It must have been just a few seconds.

…Must? It was just a few seconds, because her heart immediately protested when it ended as fast as it started. Startled, her brain asserted she must have done something wrong, only for her eyes to open and her thoughts to quiet when Rarity immediately moved forward, burying herself in Twilight’s chest, hiding her face away quick but not quick enough Twilight didn’t catch sight of her very cute, very heavy blush.

Oh, she thought, a tug in her heart. That was nice. That felt right. That felt good. And if forever was that, then…

That wouldn’t be bad at all.
