Morning Blogs #01: Fandoms
Previous ChapterNext ChapterGood morning everyone and welcome to the very first instalment of these morning rants. Today the subject will be fandoms and without further ado here we go.
Now as many people know, a fandom is a collection of fans surrounding a certain work in the entertainment industry, and while that seems pretty straightforward at first glance it's actually not that simple. Classifying things in this way by just looking at the most popular area where this scenario happens and calling it the only example of that would be like saying wars never took place other than the world war's. Now many of you probably just got lost so let me cut to the point, fandoms include a rather large area of entertainment because while most people do look at it as just fans of a show or book or movie it can actually include people. Now I'm not going to act all high and mighty and belittle anyone for not knowing that because I only just stumble onto that fact a few months ago in all actuality. I've recently started watching Markiplier and Rooster Teeth a lot and after a week or two I stopped and was just like, "Wow, these people have millions of people watching and actively supporting them." And if you watch them and are an active follower of their community it's true. Markiplier hosts monthly charity streams and makes thousands of dollars for charity and also has an online store with object people are scrambling to buy and Rooster Teeth has their own website, their own store stocked full of products from their multiple shows, as well as a "Sponsorship" option in which you pay around three dollars and get exclusive content such as watching the podcast live, getting content such as RWBY and Red vs. Blue early, as well as added bonuses.
All of this absolutely baffles me and even now after being a fan for so long I'm still wondering how they managed to amass so much support for the work they produce. And it's not just YouTuber's, it's celebrities as well. And while not as much content is created by them, their fan base adores every second they're on screen or their voice is used. I suppose the most puzzling thing in this equation is the fans themselves, I mean if you think about it, the fans of something are pretty much a collection of people who like a thing enough to go around and say, "Hey this is a thing, it's cool, I like it." And while it may not seem like much to some of you, that is a rather bold statement, because there are people who saw the same exact thing you did and said, "This is bunk." Humans are rather strange, although that's not the strangest thing of all, that throne is goes to the fans. See within a fandom there are three types of fans, and I won't go too in depth here, but I will cover the basics of these three fans. The first fan is the nonchalant one, you know the one that's like, "Eh, yeah I watch it, it's fun I guess." And usually that comment is only made if they're asked directly, almost refusing to jump into any conversation despite being a fan of the subject. The next fan is the creative fan, the one that watches something and goes, "I can do something with this." And then the next thing you know you have a picture or a story or a song made based on the subject, and you can sit back and smile knowing you made something about a thing you love. The final fan is the rabid one. We all know this one, and if you don't then you're that one my friend. The rabid fan is pretty much the one who always goes around sporting all manner of object stating their love for this thing and when you talk to them you can never seem to keep the conversation away from the subject, and it's because they always take what you're talking about and twists it to fit that show or movie or book. They are essentially obsessed, and while some can calm down about it and become a normal fan, most stay in the rabid zone.
Alright well I'm out of stuff to talk about this morning but be sure to check in around 7:30 am eastern time for another one of these blog posts, because it should be up by then. My name is Sylpheed and I hope you all have a wonderful day, buh-bye.
